  1. I also had a bypass surgery a few weeks ago, and it started with soups and protein shakes. I understand your desire to get back to an active life, especially if you were into sports. I'm also looking forward to when I can resume physical activity. As for satisfying and filling meals, I've found that braised vegetables with chicken breast and quinoa can be a tasty and healthy choice. Additionally, fruits, low-fat yogurts, and vegetable omelets are good for variety. The key is to watch portion sizes and follow your doctor's recommendations.

    Protein help!

@catwoman7 put it perfectly so I won’t add to her advice & information except echo yes, you count your fluid protein as a liquid as well. Purée can be a very difficult stage for many of us. It can be a struggle to find anything that tastes okay & that the texture isn’t off putting. Thankfully it is only for two weeks. I think I ate the same few things every day. Lol! Try blending your yoghurt with milk to make a drink so you get protein (milk & yoghurt) & fluid (count how much milk you add & sip like a drink. Have you tried protein water or blending some protein powder into your oatmeal, farina, soup, the yoghurt drink, etc,? Try puréing meats like chicken (thigh is less dry than breast) with lots of gravy or stock to make it a purée. It’s a shame you can’t do eggs. Wonder if it’s because many struggle with them at first - worth asking about it. They can be a great option - egg salad, runny scrambled eggs, etc. Make a vegetable & meat soup (can add beans or lentils too) & purée that - you get meat & vegetables that way. Oh & don’t beat yourself up if you don’t hit those fluid & protein goals. As long as you’re close & getting better at it you’ll be okay. I didn’t hit them regularly for ages.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Surgery was 8/25 I’ve lost 34.4lbs - and last week finally got to see a 1 on the scale for the first number instead of a 2! Weighing in at 198.0 exactly! I’m either doing good on my water, or good on my protein - it’s really a struggle for me to do both in the same day. Unfortunately personal issues have come up and I haven’t been as active as I’ve wanted to be, but hope that changes in the next week or so. It’s cooling down in Florida, too, so hopefully I can get outside more! I am scared to try new foods - I’ve done relatively well, but the thought of adding grains in, or anything not protein freaks me out. I know it won’t derail me, but I feel like it’s a slippery slope and I would hate to slide backwards at all - would feel like such a failure.

Preaching to the choir Momo! I'm 8 days postop and I miss real food so badly! My protein goal is 90g and honestly I have not met it yet -- I've gotten as high as 81 so far. In order to get to 90 almost every liquid I consume has to be high protein and that is rough. Plus my doc has me on Stage 1 all liquids for THREE WEEKS! AGH! I might die! But I'm like you, it's just temporary. It will be worth it. GREAT TIP re: trying on clothes that don't fit! I love that suggestion! Gonna go do it now!

Hi Liz! I had a sleeve on 10/9/23. I have had two challenges with swallowing: (1) my soft palate (back of the roof of my mouth) was destroyed by the intubation and it really hurt to swallow! It has just started improving today; (2) I sometimes forget and take a BIG swallow instead of a sip and my body immediately reminds me that was too much! I'll get like 5-10 seconds of what feels kind of like mild heartburn until the liquid works it way through. It's not too painful, but it's definitely uncomfortable. Otherwise, the liquid diet is pretty miserable. But it's only for 3 weeks. I figure I can do anything for 3 weeks, considering the benefit on the other end!

Hi I am on day 5 and I have been wanting to just eat something I am not hungry at all but it’s so hard to drink around the clock to make sure to get everything in. I know it’s all worth it at the end and I am so grateful but it’s hard mentally and I have just wanted to scream so you’re not alone! People who I know who have had this always say these two weeks are the hardest! I know that there is a light and I will be able to eat normal food in no time! I started at 217 and I am 5’3 I am not 187.6 I was able to try on some clothes I had that have not fitted me in a while and that was motivating me to keep my head up it’s working! You can do this! It’s hard but it will be worth it in the end. Stay strong! Not everyone has the privilege of being in the looser club like us!! Good luck on your journey!
  8. Hi, I’ve also been slow but steady. I’m down 46 lbs, started at 345. I had some hives week 2, but those went away. No other issues. The diet has been easy to adjust to. I’ve even gone back to coffee every morning, just less. Helps with #2! I find myself eating a lot of Greek yogurt because it’s easiest on my stomach but high in protein. Rotisserie chicken, stewed sirloin chunks, salads, eggs and bacon.

    How long?

Going on month 5 now. Takes about 6 months for mine. Started back in June. Found out had iron deficiency anemia. So its been a roller coaster. So my process was get the referral from my primary care provider, then made the consult with my bariatric surgeon. Ran that fine, they drew labs and two days later diagnosed me with iron deficiency anemia. Started my nutrition appts (have to have 3 of them) that week and the psych (have to have 2). My nutritionist jumped the gun at my anemia diagnosis and instead of holding off to see if therapy and a GI look helped, she referred me to a hematologist, GI, and sleep lab. At this point I've had all my nutrition and psych (passed with flying colors) appts, my GI done and cleared (found a sliding hiatal hernia with erosion causing my anemia, which is now resolved thankfully), Hematologist done and needing clearance, sleep study done and cleared by my understanding. Now I just have to wait 30 days min prior to the date I want for Surgery for my primary care clearance. Hoping I can get surgery on December 13th. Best of luck and keep one foot in front of the other. You will do great and definatly think about therapy or a class to go to. Helps tremendously getting your mind in the right space.
  10. My first one at the clinic (I had 12 prior as an insurance requirement) was just myself and the Dietician he asked me how I was currently eating, and told me he was glad my insurance required 12 prior visits with a dietician before getting to him, then he went over what eating after surgery would be like, showed me a portion size shot glass. Told me about vitamins, and recommended I try different kinds of protein shakes, so I would know what I liked when I got to the 2-week full liquid pre-op. He explained the order to eat my foods in, and to try and get a little of each, after the healing period, during the healing period he said it was more important to focus on protein. lasted about an hour My second visit was virtual, went over the full liquid pre-op diet and was given my start date. My clinic gives you a book on your very first visit that has all of the information, so I was reminded what page the 2-week full liquid pre-op diet was on. lasted about 30 min My third visit was virtual and in a group, we again went over the 2-week full liquid pre-op and over the 2-week post-op at which point there is an in-person visit, where we are evaluated and will be told how to proceed next with our diet. Again we were told what pages to refer in our book. lasted 1.5 hours
  11. Mine was a class with other people. Took about 90 minutes, went over pre-op diet, post surgery food stages, and long term diet. It was easygoing. The dietician asked if any of us felt we needed individualized help with diet planning and a few people asked for private sessions but I didn't. I am pretty knowledgeable about nutrition and understand the stages and such. I have another session right before surgery (if they ever get it scheduled) to go over the first few weeks of the diet. And then I have another class before we transition to soft foods... It seems this practice prefers classes for most of their nutrition info. Though I have the dietitian's email if I have any questions or need a private session, so that's nice. I have found most dietitians/nutritionists to be pretty business-like and a little abrupt in their manner, so your experience sounds pretty normal.
  12. My dietician always writes on my record "unknowledgable about eating correctly".... LOL It used to get me mad,but now I just laugh at it. Maybe she does it for insurance purposes or to justify her job ...who knows. She makes me write down everything I eat ,which has gotten to be a pain ,but I do it . It does help me keep up with my protein intake. I see her on Oct.25 of this month . I've written everything down and I've been at a stall for 3 and a half months now .I'm anxious to see what she'll say .

I am lucky I have Kaiser, so its already approved when I got the referral so yay!! Was the cardiologist a requirement for your insurance? He didn't mention that to me, but my appt was literally okay you did the orientation, the nutrition class, now lost 15lbs get that official weigh in then call us and we will get the next step going....I am very anxious and I am self sabotaging myself! I was 5lbs away 2 weeks ago then gained 5lbs because I let myself just not care now back to 5 more lbs. This is so hard!

    How long?

It took me two months to get all my requirements done so we could submit to insurance. Insurance approved it within a week! It really depends on your insurer and what you need to do to be cleared for surgery. My longest wait was to see the cardiologist, they were booked out 6 weeks. But I know some have had much longer waits so I consider myself lucky. I'm scheduled for surgery Nov. 1st, my first appt with the surgeon was August 3rd. Good luck with losing your last 5 lbs!!

I'm feeling good! A little nervous but that's to be expected. I've finished one week of my pre-op diet, two weeks to go!! I will say though, if you are prone at all to leg cramps and have to do a pre-op diet, make sure you have an electrolyte mix on hand. I got wicked charlie horse cramps in both legs about 48 hours into my diet. Thankfully I had anticipated this and had an electrolyte powder that's low carb on hand and as long as I drink some every night the potassium and magnesium in it have held the cramps at bay!
  16. I had my first meeting with the nutritionist last Thursday (first of three). It lasted about 40 mins and she just asked questions about my diet history and eating habits, and then she emailed me a packet with guidelines about the 2-week pre op diet and the post op diet. Then she quickly ended the meeting as soon as I said I had no more questions. It felt very abrupt and not what I thought it would be. Has anyone else's experience been like that with the nutritionist? Is this how it is?

    Protein help!

the first stall out of the gate at around the three-week mark (although it comes earlier for some, later for others) is extremely common. We even have a name for it "the three-week stall". Almost everyone has that. In fact, if you do a search on this site for it, you'll find over 17,000 posts on it. And I am NOT kidding. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale for a few days, and the stall will break. Usually takes 1-3 weeks. And know that it's likely the first of many stalls. It's a natural part of losing weight. I think your body just has to stop and recalibrate once in a while. constipation is also a very common issue after weight loss surgery. It's probably due to the high protein diet plus some of the supplements (iron and calcium supplements are the usual culprits). A lot of us have to take daily Miralax or stool softeners to keep on top of it. Other things that might help - magnesium tablets, prunes, Smooth Move tea. You might have to experiment to see what works for you. I take a capful of Miralax every morning and have been doing it for eight years. does the dizziness occur when you stand up? If so, it's probably orthostatic hypotension - also very common early after surgery - and it eventually goes away. Until then, just stand up SLOWLY. Protein shakes also count as liquids, so it may not be as difficult as you think to hit your fluid goals. the first few weeks are a challenge, but. you'll soon have all this behind you!!

    Discomfort/Pain Post Surgery

I stopped taking pain meds after week 1. I still had pain week 2 but it was bearable. I had gastric bypass and hernia repair so YMMV. The pain didn't go away completely for weeks but was more like twinges depending on what I was doing and how I moved. Nothing that needed continued pain meds . GL

    TMI Poop Talk

One week, then once or twice daily after that. I take 2 stool softeners every day on the advice of my doctor. Softener is not a laxative, so your bowels won't become dependent on it. Keeps things moving. I never have constipation but notice if I don't have my daily movement, my weight stalls.
  20. What do you mean by not always having real protein? What are your current protein sources? I was eating lamb, steak, chicken, pork, fish from solid foods so week 7.

  23. Hi community! Hope you’re all well. I am officially 18 days post op and I am struggling. My puréed diet is very restrictive. I can’t have eggs, tuna, cheese like many can and I’m struggling with meeting my protein goals. I was told not to have protein shakes as a liquid but as a meal. But it’s difficult to meet my liquids goal and my protein goal when I feel like I don’t have many options. These are the things I was cleared to have: 2 oz. of milk, 2 oz. of low fat or light yoghurt, protein shakes, mashed potatoes, mashed avocado, 2-3 oz. of small curd cottage cheese, hot cereals like oatmeal, cream of wheat, farina with skim milk, lentils, chick peas, tofu or beans. Introduce all cooked vegetables (zucchini, carrots, spinach, etc.) 2 oz. of mashed fruits up to two times per day between meals as snacks I have also hit a stall which sucks cause I’m only 2 weeks post op and I believe it may be cause I’m not meeting my protein/liquid goals. I have also experienced dizziness and as a result I’m not walking as much as I should be. I been mostly on bed rest. I have also been suffering with constipation. Does anybody have any tips? Any advice would be very helpful on how I could meet my goals or any recipes based on my diet above. Thank you in advance 💜

    Bariatric Burr

yes. I can't remember how soon it happened, but earlier than I would have expected if it was due to loss of "insulation". Maybe a few weeks out? (maybe even sooner than that - it's been a while). I think in addition to insulation loss, there's something about the surgery that throws off your internal thermostat. The cold thing only lasted a year or so for me, but for some it seems to be a permanent "feature".
