    I need to gain weight

Protein shakes blended with banana, nuts, nut butters, oats and full fat milk/yogurt. Also protein bars that are high calorie. Good Luck 💜

Just got the all clear to...

Congrats on graduating!!!! I had a soft scrambled egg with cottage cheese in it and some cheddar. The cheese caused me issues, but stirring in a spoon of greek yogurt or sour cream and cooking until creamy would have worked better! The egg went down great though!

First 1-2 week foods ideas post surgery

I mostly did protein drinks, watered yogurt down with Fairlife Milk and used different flavors to add punch to it. I did some butternut squash soup, some tomato soup (too acidy for me at first), and a ton of broth and cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soups. I also did won ton soup without the noodles--just broth from a Chinese food place. I'd mix in protein (unflavored) into all my soups while it was cold then gently heated it to no more than 140 cuz I didn't like when the protein clumped when it got too hot. I did not do well with the bean soups/pea soups. Gassy but also carby and that made me hungry. Then SF popsicles and sf jello. Oh and I did a ton of decaf coffee with my protein drinks in it as both hot and cold (iced) lattes and blended frappacinos.

    Snickers

Some days early on I had an urge to eat. I wasn’t physically hunger, I just wanted to eat! If I couldn’t push past it with fluids, then I ate, but made sure all my decision were good ones. I ate cucumbers with vinegar, carrots w ranch made from yogurt, jerky, lean meats, etc.

First 1-2 week foods ideas post surgery

I think the premier protein shakes & yogurt gave me crazy gas too! Hopefully I will be able to eat/drink later : ( I do have butternut squash I will try shortly.

    Ice cream

I go to Braums and get the small yogurt twist in a cup. Its 140 calories. I tried halo top last week and its just not for me. You must be careful at 3 months out. I waited until I got to goal or holidays before I ate anything off plan and right back on it the next day. Not everyone can do that and not have issues with relapsing back to old ways.

    Bored of same ole food

Yes that is boring for sure. I use to buy lunchmeat and roll laughing cow up in it around 2 months. Tuna packets have a lot of different flavors with some cottage cheese, although you probably wont be able to finish at 2 months out. I liked adells chicken meatballs with peach salsa (found that on youtube, you might be able to get 2 in ) Chobani key lime yogurt was and still is a favorite of mine. Any kind of seafood I ate.

    Bored of same ole food

I'd be bored too. Why are you so limited? Add fish, ground turkey, chicken, seafood of all kinds, canned tuna, chicken and salmon to make salads out of using hardboiled egg, cottage cheese, greek yogurt (plain) and spices with some mustard and dill relish. Lunch meats, veggies of all kinds. Some small amounts of nuts. Some avocado and olives for healthy fats.

    Protein

I do at least one protein shake a day. 1 cp of soy milk, 5 tblsp of low-fat cottage cheese, 5 tblsp 0 fat Greek Yogurt, 1 scoop of protien powder. Adds up to approx 45 grams of protien. About 350 calories.

    Protein

I found that one scoop of the protein powder I use (PEScience Select) mixes very well with TwoGood Yogurt (80 calories, 2 grams of sugar, and 12 grams protein) it has a texture like frosting. I stick to having protein supplements for breakfast since I don’t have energy for anything else. my nutritionist also said to go off protein supplements at some point but that once a day was ok and suggested mixing protein powder in yogurt and other foods.
  11. Congrats to all of us August sleeves! We did it, now that it's officially September I mentally feel it's behind me. Mentally yes lol but my stomach tells me different. I was sleeved 8/15 still on stage 2 so yogurt and farina are the only nondrinkables I've had. I move to stage 3 on 9/5 and can't wait to have cottage cheese, pureed veggies and ricotta. Does anyone have the ricotta bake recipe link ? I understand we all had different protocols for pre surgical diet due to our BMI, weight, individual health issues etc. But I'm so confused as to how all our post op diets vary ???? Even on my next stage I am still not allowed scrambled eggs, only soft and poached which I detest. I guess each surgeon has their own philosophy but I feel most on the boards have been offered so much more. I'm dreaming of scrambled eggs, refried beans, lentil soup etc. But like I said stage 3 starts later this week which will be 3 weeks post op and it's just purees, cottage cheese and ricotta that will be new for me

How many calories do you eat a day?

@claricey, you didn't ask me, but I get a lot of protein. Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg, a slice turkey bacon, half a cup of coffee with fat-free milk, a small glass of tomato juice (to take my pills) Lunch: Healthy Choice Power Bowl, or a salad with no dressing and salmon or chicken on top if I go out. Dinner: 5 oz. fish, half a cup of veggies Snack options if I get hungry: Banana, yogurt, quarter cup mixed nuts Water: 64 oz. Almost every meal and snack is built around protein. I was stalled out and just decreased my calories to 800 and started losing again, which means skipping the snacks. But In my first six months, I broke some stalls by eating more. Increasing or decreasing by 100 calories a day for a week isn't going to hurt anything, I don't think.

    Loosing too much weight

To maintain I started eating a small amount of nuts, peanut butter, cooked an egg with a teaspoon of olive oil. I also switched from low fat to 2-4% yogurt, and changed from skim to 2% milk to get some more calories for the same amount of food.

So what are you unable to eat now?

I haven’t had anything not set well in my new pouch yet I’ve only tried tuna with light mayo, egg whites with sugar free bbq, cottage cheese and with a couple ritz crackers. On my liquids/semi liquid I had protein shakes, Gatorade zero, liquid yogurt Low sugar and non fat, sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, sugar free popsicle and strained soups. I am telling myself not to have bread or pasta due to high carbs and that’s what had me gaining a lot before Surgery.
  15. I try my best to keep carbs at below 20 grams. I'm typically at 15 grams net carbs of an approximately 500 cals daily. Fat is negligible for me. It's typically fat in Yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta or my tablespoon of Olive oil. My plan says Dense proteins in fish, chicken, Turkey, canned Tuna, Tofu or eggs. And cooked green veggies OR soft fruits ( Berries except black berries, melon, Apple with skin off, fresh or canned with no syrup). All in 1/2 cup. For every 3 bites of protein, 1 bite of veggies. No starch, grains or sugar. So 60 grams to 80 grams proteins 15 to 20 grams carbs 10 to 15 grams fat Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    4 weeks

I wasn't eating salad until I was about six months out. Raw vegetables can be rough on healing stomachs. I was eating either purees or soft foods at that point - yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, refried beans...that kind of thing does your surgeon's office have any guidelines?

    Lentil Cookbook?

I 💜 lentils... But a Lentil only cool book... Hmmmm thats super specific so try Google Also can you branch out to other legumes as well (so you dont get stuck in a rut)? All legumes/beans can be cooked very very tender and mashed blended into stew/soup? You can even add unflavored protein powder, yogurt, cheese or cottage cheese as a topping. Good Luck and share if you find something 💜

    Lentil Cookbook?

So, I'm 10 months out and still having problems eating solid foods (doc knows, nothing they can do). Since this appears to be my life, I need to get out of the rut of only eating yogurt for breakfast and dinner. Lentils seem like they go down fine. We have a meal delivery service here that is run by immigrants/refugees and I have been able to get all sorts of delicious Middle Eastern, Indian, and African (lots of stuff from Eritrea and Ethiopia)-style lentils from that. But those have a lot of salt and oil, so I'd love to be able to replicate them by cooking at home. Does anyone know of a good lentil cookbook that has a lot of different styles of cooking? Thanks!

    A little weirdo am I

I got sick of protein drinks fast but I knew I needed to stick with it and just kept trying to find the one I could tolerate the most. You have already gotten great advice, @FluffyChixknows her stuff. The head stuff and dealing with bad habits are a roadblock we all have to cross and learn to use the surgery as a tool. The rest is up to us. all I can say is there are tastier protein drinks out there that won’t make you feel sick. I couldn’t stand the smell or taste of some proteins that a lot of people enjoy. I found PEScience protein and tolerate the taste better, now I sometimes mix it with a high protein low sugar yogurt. There is also Unjury protein that comes in broth flavors. And BariatricPal store has a lot of options including protein shots that get you 15 grams of protein in 3oz. They have protein broth, soups, juices and hot cocoa. You can also buy or even make your own bone broth that is a good source of protein. With the support here you will find your way.
  22. Yes! My RD suggested adding powdered milk to yogurt, cottage cheese etc. Great suggestion!
  23. I couldn't tolerate them either. It is the whey and would trigger my gag reflex. I literally ate night protein yogurt and high protein milk for 3-4 weeks. I recently tried muscle milk coffee latte and it has milk protein and is kinda tasty.
  24. Have you tried double milk - essentially milk mixed with powdered milk. (or add milk powder to yogurt - water down the yogurt to a consistency you can have). That helped me when I started to not tolerate protein shakes.

Weighing your food on a food scale

Disclaimer: I am still pre-op (until Wednesday). I also know that weighing/measuring/and recording foods are going to be my biggest challenge. That said: I do believe from everything I have learned that this will be vital to my success. At least, it will be in the first several months while I retrain my body to eat the right foods in the right portions. In the simplest of explanations: By weighing and measuring your food, you can be sure accurately eat proper portions and nutrient amounts. When we "eyeball" amounts, we tend to serve ourselves more than we are supposed to eat at one time. When we do that, we are overeating. We also are more unsure of what amounts of nutrients we are eating (too many carbs, too little protein). My "small" bowl may only hold 4 ounces of food, your "small" bowl" may hold 6-8 oz of food. That is a huge difference, and can mean the difference in being successful or not with your weight loss. The goal is to get the right portion sizes with the right nutrient amounts. And in keeping portion sizes small, you are reducing the risk of stretching your stomach back. When you do that, you are more hungry and you want to eat more. I hate measuring, so right now I buy individual sized servings of anything I can. 1 serving of tuna or chicken. 1 serving of greek yogurt or v-8 juice. Or whatever foods I have been told to eat. Post-op... I know I will be eating less at each meal for a while. So, I purchased 2oz and 4oz disposable containers. I will use them to put things like my jello and yogurt into until I am up to a full serving. For tracking food, I am learning to use the Bariastic app... but there are other apps you can use. I like this one as it is pretty simple to use, and I can take a picture of UPC codes for my foods. I also bought scales for food not long ago. Another tool I bought was a bariatric portions plate/bowl. Waste of money? Maybe. But I am hoping it's plate bowl sizes and visuals will retrain me to automatically serve myself smaller portions. I have 2 bowls, 2 plates, and some smaller spoons/forks. Eventually I hope to not have to measure everything, but for the first 6 months to a year I will do my best to measure and track EVERYTHING.
