    Just a journey

I love reading your progress. Keep to it habits can be made and broken. I weigh. The same since 2019 and am about 130 to 135 but my clothes are to small. I need to get some muscle back. Anyway keep doing and posting.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So my scale seems to be finally moving after almost 10 days of stall post the clear fluid phase. Let's see how it does by the end of this month. I try to stay away from the scale but I keep getting drawn to it every morning 😂 I don't get too bogged down with stalls after having heard of them here for months now. So I don't mind weighing myself daily. I'll be happy as long as scale moves after a certain point and I hit appropriate goal every month. Hope everyone is doing well with their diets. I still have 11 more days of full fluid diet phase.

    Pain after GS surgery

I had surgery on a Tuesday and stopped taking pain medicine on Friday. It only hurt if I put pressure on an incision and even then it hardly hurt. I walked 10 minutes most hours after surgery when I was awake to try to get the gas out.
  4. I just had VSG surgery on 12/10. I was so nervous the weeks leading up to my surgery. I had anxiety and trouble sleeping but you know what? I did it and I’d do it again. The decision was easy but the process is difficult. You just have to get through it. Remember why you decided to do this. Remember how good you are going to feel afterwards. Today makes a week. I’m home, moving around and tolerating liquids and some applesauce. It’s hard to predict how you will feel 6 weeks post op but imo, you get stronger everyday. Your body is going to go through a lot of changes after a surgery like this. I’m still early in mines, I’m sore, not as strong as I was but also had 85% of my stomach removed. I wish you all the best and know that any choice you make you YOUR choice. Take care 💜
  5. I have severe GERD and associated damage, no regain. Approval took 9 calendar days. Surgery is March 1st! My surgeon is having me do her 10 day pre op diet so I have that to look forward to. LOL Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Thanks. I haven't heard from my doctor at all. One thing I do want to mention as an FYI, or in case anyone is interested is that my psych asked me a question. She asked if I'd be happy staying the same weight that I am, or losing 10-20 pounds since my eating patterns have shifted a little. But generally, can I be happy at this weight. Because I think we both know that, barring some miracle, I'm likely to not lose the amount of weight I would if I had the procedure. I'd have to research the meds that were mentioned earlier (that's not really a road I've traveled as of yet). So I'm still thinking about that. Honestly, NO. I'm a big girl. I don't mind being big, to some extent, but I'm uncomfortable in my skin with how I am now. Eight years ago I was able to lose a nice chunk of weight, but I can't say that's possible right now for me. Age, stress, hormones - you name it, are really working against me. But, being also not sure about the surgery, I'm in a limbo of sorts, which is almost more depressing and frustrating. It was advised that I touch base back with the bariatric program in a month or so, or after the holidays to kind of gauge where things are. But honestly I don't even know what they would want me to do at this point (start over in the program, etc.) and it sound exhausting to me to do that.

    January Surgery buddies

I hope so too - for your sake. I was just about to start my pre-preop diet today. Really start to get down to it a little ahead of when I was supposed to start on the 20th when I got the call. We're leaving for a 10 day vacation tomorrow though, so all is not lost. I can eat real food now.
  8. I got RNY 04/2017. HW: 226, LW: 150, CW: 195 I did all of the right things until I had transfer addiction in 2019 and started drinking daily. It escalated and I was a full blown alcoholic. I have now been sober a year and I’m depressed. I’m almost back to my pre surgery weight, I’m working my butt off to lose the weight and it’s not coming off. I never feel well and my chest always hurts. I always have heartburn and I’m always hungry. I need help so I went to a new surgeon the other day about a potential revision and she wants me to see a nutritionist and get a endoscopy. I got my results from my upper GI testing today and there’s NOTHING wrong. I feel like everything is wrong and I’m not okay. I’m on antidepressants, I’m now sober, I’m exercising and eating properly but I’m still fat and I hate myself so much for it. I feel like the biggest failure at 30 years old and it makes me so sad. Has anyone else been able to lose regain?
  9. So here I am, 6 months in, lost 10% of my weight and going to my final preop appointment. On the edge of my seat because after all this time I finally get to meet and discuss with my surgeon. Hubby asks me on the way in “what happens if you still don’t see her”.? I tell him well then I’m done with this place. Guess what??? Still didn’t see her!!!!I weighed in, met with the NP, signed paperwork and went over some surgery stuff, met with dietician, got vitamin samples the whole thing. After 3 1/2 hours I still hadn’t see her and had to leave to be back for work. Now what? What do I do? Give up on this office? Start somewhere else? Or thrown in the bypass towel altogether and keep forging ahead??? Very upset and frustrated now.
  10. Hello everyone! Awesome to find an online community for this . My surgery (sleeve) was scheduled last minute for 12/20/21. I'm excited; but worried because I was only given 9 days to follow the liquid pre-op diet. Today would be beginning day 6, and I'm only down 4lbs. Will that be enough? I've read the expectation is between 10-15 lbs and I've heard if the liver hasn't shrunk surgery can be cancelled. Are these valid concerns or am I worrying for nothing? I hope everything is going well for you all-Happy Holidays!

    Locs/Dreads/Dreadlocks

I think the reason for hair loss is similar hair loss after pregnancy. After giving birth, your estrogen levels drop significantly and more hair goes into the resting stage (the hair stage prior to shedding). Since lots of hair goes into this stage, lots of hair is shed at the same time. Normally (aka non-pregnant), I think only about 10% of your hair is in the rest/shed stage. Our bodies store estrogen in the fat cells so when you lose weight fast due to WLS, your body is flooded with estrogen. As your weight loss slows, the amount of estrogen in your body drops similar to post pregnancy. I hope you don't have a problem with hair loss and I hope I don't either! I'm just trying to make myself believe that it is only hair and it will grow back. I'll take the long term weight loss with some short term funky hair than long term obesity and long term good (ish) hair 🙂
  12. I'm the same! Almost 4 weeks out and only lost 10 pounds. It's almost depressing Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

So hungry 15 minutes after eating

Don't panic! I'm post op 3 weeks and i have only lost 9 pounds! I'm eating 5 to 6 times a day getting 90% of my protein in. And 90% of my water. I'm on soft foods now and gained a pound! Im also hungry.. I panicked until I have read where other people are in the same boat. I'm up at 2am writing because I went in panic mode. Our bodies are all different and age, how long we carried the weight, medicines and if you didn't eat that much before surgery it may take longer. I got upset because I saw so many people saying that they lost 30 and 40 pounds in a month! 10 pounds is better then what i had been doing. You being hungry too is normal. Try to relax and keep drinking as much as you can. Try thr protein water. I'm sorry we are going through such hardship through this part of our journey. But it will get better. It has to! Keep strong Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. I am almost 8 months since surgery and I absolutely would do it again! 110%! I'm 4 pounds from goal and it feels like the last 10 pounds have taken forever to come off but I feel 20 years younger. Physically, I am doing activities I have not done in years. Mentally, it has been an adjustment...in a good way. I smile more, make eye contact with people and overall, just in a better place emotionally. I wore a fitted wool dress with knee high boots the other evening to dinner with hubby and a gentleman, who was leaving the restaurant, looked back over his shoulder at me and my better half said "yep, she hot!"...we laughed liked teenagers throughout dinner! For me, it was worth the hard work, the time and effort to get here. Only you can decide if you are ready for this major life change! Good Luck!

    Last 10 pounds

I'm having the same problem. I can't seem to lose the last 10. I just joined the gym hoping that will help and I'm thinking of going back on the protein shakes to see if that will help. Has anyone gone back to the 2 week pre-surgery diet to help lose some weight and keep it off for the last few pounds?? Any advice will help. TIA..

    Wondering if this is normal?

I paid privately (in Belgium) and literally had one visit with the surgeon (lasted about 10 minutes) and one meeting with a dietician (lasted about 5 minutes). And that’s it. Choose which surgery I would want and picked a surgery date. Since I had quite a low starting BMI (35.5), I didn’t have to do another appointment with the dietician. Other people had to record their eating for a week and discuss that with the dietician. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Leading up to the surgery I also had to do some bloodwork through my GP. But that’s it. Got a leaflet explaining the pre-op diet and that’s it. 😅 I already knew everything I needed to know since I did lots of research myself, so I didn’t really mind all of this, but it did seem quite weird to me, compared to the hoops people have to jump through for insurance. One advantage of being self payed was that at my hospital they always do the self-pay patients first, so I was actually first of the day and done by 9 in the morning. 👍🏻

    How long do stalls last?

Stalls can last a few days to a few weeks. The only thing that I have found that is moderately effective at busting stalls is changing your routine for a short time. For me, the routine is what keeps me on track (eating similar things at roughly the same time every day, having consistent exercise goals, etc.). But that routine can also lull my body into a false sense of security. So if I exercise really hard that day (or not at all), it can help break a stall. If I eat a few more carbs than I usually do (or eat almost no carbs), it can help break a stall. Here is a rough timeline of my stalls. Had surgery 8/16/21. Lost 24 pounds in the first 14 days. Lost 6 pounds over the next 19 days. Lost 41 pounds over the next 49 days Lost 11 pounds over the next 24 days Lost 8 pounds over the next 11 days. As you can see, I had times where you are losing almost a pound a day. And I had other periods where it felt like I was losing nothing at all because the scale stayed the same (or went up slightly) for several days in a row.
  18. Everyone’s experience is different but i am 8 months post op hovering at 9 or 10 pounds from my goal weight and I would absolutely do this again. Many will tell you their only regret is not doing this sooner and I agree (although it is a major surgery with some big life changes so I think this is the time when I was ready). And I absolutely could have done a cruise at 6 weeks. You will have to bring shakes and things with you and you will have to enjoy all the many other parts of cruising other than indulging in ALL of the foods available but I’m sure you will find a couple delicacies that you can enjoy that are on plan. My plan does not exclude ANY food. I have had chocolate, pizza, pasta, etc. just in very small amounts but you will want to follow your doctors plan and some are more restrictive. I was on a diet on a cruise and I remember bringing those crystal light to go packages with me and mixing them with a glass of water at dinner which is one tip if you don’t like water a second would be if you don’t feel you can order and eat normal enough to eat in front of people you can just live it up on room service the whole time. My husband was excited to learn that you can have beer delivered to the room. Lol.
  19. I am having my surgery on 01/19/2022 with Alabama Surgical Associates in Huntsville, AL. Does anyone have any experience with them?
  20. Oops…1/19 is the date. I’m anticipating 2 weeks out from work with possibly working remotely the second week. Dreading the drains but nobody near by does the drainless TT.
  21. I had surgery on November 12 and i have to wait 10 mins in between bites or I'll vomit it back up. Its stressful

learning to let go of old eating habits

Yeah i still have dumping issues, but only with sugar (all the other stuff is, and always was, fair gane). The dumping symptoms have eased up somewhat along the years…its not as severe and my tolerance for sugar amounts have increased a little. While a few sips of a sugar laden cocktail was past my limit already then, now i could probably have that entire drink, but nursed over a period of time…and NOT on an empty stomach. At 3 minths post a couple spoonfuls of this creamy fruit salad desert made me so sick i wanted to roll over and and die…now,I could probably eat 1/4 cup of it and still want to live lol…but again only if there is something in my stomach already. Now if that fruit salad didn’t have dairy in it, i could manage probably 1/2 cup (i learned mixing dairy and excess sugar hits me particularly hard..,I’m talking to you, ice cream) if i do dump on something, it’s less severe. For instance, just the other day when i decided to skip dinner cuz I wasn’t feeling it, i absently ate a couple sour key candies the Kid was eating while watching tv later that night. The heart racing started in about 10 mins, then I started to feel hot and feel that “hung-over” feeling. I laid down and slept it off. I didn’t want to die, but i did feel pretty sh*tty. No barf nor diarrhea that time, but my poop was noticeably looser the next day. So yeah, i still dump. Its both good and bad I guess. But whatevs, its just part of life now.
  23. Update: The Syntrax Roadside Lemonade flavor is fine. When I mix 30 g of protein in 3 cups of water, it is a bit gritty and semi-sweet. However, when I reduced it to the 23 g of protein in one full scoop, and add half a packet of crystal light, it is just right. The Unflavored Syntrax has only a slight smell in the container. When I mixed 10 g of protein into my oatmeal, it is only slightly perceivable. Definitely doable. Will continue with these protein powders! Thanks.

    Coffee

Hahaha... My surgeon/clinic says none At all for 6 months! It's insane how different every office is. I would have such an improved quality of life with a cup or two of decaf... I am 10 days post op maybe I will try it next week.
  25. Nerves are normal. And I wouldn't worry about the anesthesia. I've had general anesthesia 10 or 12 times over the years. I get nauseated, but the nausea meds are good. You are changing your life for the better. That's the thing to remember.
