    Changed mind about WLS?

horror stories are very rare. They seem more common than they are because people post about them, seeking advice. Pretty much no one seeks advice when they're six months - or a year - or three years = out and everything is hunky-dorey. Just for the record, I'm almost four years out, and everything has been hunky-dorey. No complications, no complaints, absolutely no regrets. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
  2. Hi all, I had the gastric sleeve done on 2/19/19. I have been having complications since. I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience. I'm having serious buyers remorse. After my sleeve I had severe nausea and vomiting issues. I informed my surgeon's office and was told to sit up more and move around. I felt initially it was working. A few days after my surgery I got a call that my stomach that was removed tested positive for H. Poly. The doctor ordered a course of strong antibiotics. My nausea skyrocketed. Now just 4 weeks after surgery I have had 2 week long admits with really no resolution. I went through test that say my esophagus lower valve will not squeeze fluid or food into my stomach. Though the actual stomach is fine. I have an immune disorder called Polymyositis that the doctor believes is the problem but prior to the surgery my esophagus was working fine. I'm not getting any answers on what can be done to promote my esophagus to start working again. My surgeon is suggesting TPN or a feeding tube as I am unable to hold anything down. Neither of which I want. Has anyone had a similar situation?
  3. I’m a few weeks shy of 11-months post-op. I didn’t have any major complications. Had surgery on a Thursday morning and was released from the hospital the following afternoon. I was up and walking two hours after surgery. I didn’t have any issues with nausea. Pain was minimal. As far as weight loss goes, I’m ahead of schedule, so to speak—at least according to my surgeon’s office. At my 9-month follow-up, I had already lost 67% of my excess body weight. At this point, I’m almost at my goal weight, which was set by my surgeon’s office. All in all, weight-loss surgery was the best decision of my life. I have no regrets.
  4. I am 1 year post op, below my goal and in maintenance, with no complications whatsoever!
  5. Going on 4 months post-op and no complications. Surgery went fine. No pain after surgery. Nausea limited to the first day post-op. No problems getting my protein in, swallowing water, sleeping, nothing. Happy camper here!
  6. I actually felt the opposite about this forum - no one talked about complications and I thought everything would be rosy. lol. I guess it's all subjective. That's why I was so bent when **** happened to me, because it seemed like NO ONE else on here had anything going on. People should hear both sides to the story, for sure, though.
  7. 7 months post op. 58 year old female. I had zero complications also. I spent one night in the hospital and I was able to drink water without any problems from day 1. I didn’t struggle with any of the food stages, other than disliking the soft stage. I’ve only had 3 instances of food feeling “stuck”, but nothing major. I avoid dry chicken now. If I hadn’t lost my appetite, I would have been skeptical that they finished my surgery!
  8. it’s true! many of us bounce back from surgery, had no complications, lose weight and keep it off. It seems that new people are not getting a balance look at weight loss surgery. I would love to hear all the positive stories. People with no complications. Many people gravitate to the negative experiences. It will fuel your surgery anxiety. Your surgeon gave you the statistics and risk facts about weight loss surgery. Read some positives to give yourself perspective. 9. I am self pay and have not decided yet if I am going to do the sleeve or the bypass yet (occasional reflux now). Does anyone have any recommendations for surgeons or even who to avoid in Missouri? I am right in the middle of the state so willing to travel. My health insurance does not cover bariatric surgery and therefore will not cover any complications either. So really feeling stressed about finding a surgeon with a great track record. Also if anyone has any experience with self pay in Missouri if you could share that with me as well that would be great. Thank you. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I had sleeve and I counted myself as someone with no complications, but like most I struggled to get any more than a tiny sip down initially. That’s just because anything hitting a stomach that has been so severely messed about with is going to get a reaction. For me the reaction was a tightening (think a stomach wincing) and I had to take a pause before another sip. Over first ten days went to shorter and shorter pauses between sips, to two or three sips in a row, to mouthfuls, to two to three mouthfuls in a row. Everyone repeats ‘sip, sip, sip’ as a mantra, so worried that meant I had a baggy sleeve, but surgeon and dietician said no, just less sore and swollen stomach tolerating more. If you didn’t mean that and meant throat problems then sorry for taking you off at a tangent! [emoji846] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Hi all, im new to this site but open to suggestions , So my story is , i had a gastric bypass in April 2017, weight loss great, all my medical conditions settled , but i had pain in the insides of the left rib area from quite early on, i couldn't get to the pain by touch, i had the camera and CT scans , i was later informed i had ulcers in the new pouch, i was relieved to find out i did have something wrong and this pain would go away , so in 2018 i had a bypass revision to have the ulcers removed , my new pouch had lengthened (stretched due to acide reflux) , so i had further surgery to shorten this and the ulcers were taken out. Further complications arose, as they removed the ulcers they caught my bowel , more surgery was needed and i lost 5 pints of blood, recovering from the surgery , 5 months later I'm still in excruciating pain on the left side, pain killers don't help at all, and my GP said it was my 'Back' i knew this wasn't what was wrong with me and i felt i had no support or getting anywhere with my condition. The hospital were also at a loss what was happening with me, and tried to diagnose me as depressed, the only depression i had was pain and not been believed. i took it upon myself to do my own research and i have came up with Bile reflux, not acid, the GP listened to me and agreed to try me on some medication, as i wa passed myslef by this time, after 5 days of been on the medication , at last i'm getting some relief ,i cant explain the pain i have been in, i thought i was going insane at one point as all the tests were negative, scans all clear , pain that i couldn't get too, yet it had me drinking bottles of strong pain relief to literally put me in bed . My question is ? has anyone else had this complaint of BILE REFLUX and if so what was the outcome as i understand the medication can only be take short term?
  12. Hi there. Just wondering if Bariatric Pal Hospital MX is CSG or JCI accredited? Also, when do you do leak tests & how many do you do? How many patients over 400 lbs have been sleeved & can they be reached to see how their experiences went? And.. How long should patients wait before going home?... And what about potential complications after surgery? (DVT, for example) When should you stop taking birth control before surgery? And when can you resume taking it after surgery? (I'm female, so, need to know this) Thanks for your time!

    March 2019 sleepers

Hey everyone. 3 days post op here (March 20). I had the sleeve without any complications, and it was done in 45 minutes! Trying to get in my liquids, but no matter how show I sip I get painful gas. Going for walks has really helped with the gas, but that's my biggest complaint so far. Starting weight of 311 and now at 289.

    Preop diet?

My doctor says I don't have to do the preop liquid diet. I'm worried. Will that make complications? I could do it on my own if i want to. Should I?

    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

Hello, I am new to this forum. I had my bypass on January 29th in a Hong Kong hospital. The surgery went well and I have not had any complications except recently, in the past couple of weeks, I am developing sharp pain underneath the healed scars. It feels like the fat beneath is being torn apart. It got so bad this morning that I couldn't even get out of bed without squeezing my fat together to my side. I told my surgeon about this but he is not particularly concerned as long as i'm not developing other symptoms like fever or vomiting. It's incredibly lonely for a bariatric patient in Hong Kong. The community here is almost non-existent and I long to meet buddies who are in similar progress with me to share and cheer me on along the way. I have so many questions about exercises, nutritions and diet and often there is no one to turn to because the support in HK for bariatric patient is next to nothing. So a lot of the time I'm just making things up along the way just hoping i'm doing the right thing. It would be good to have a buddy...

    Yup. I regret this.

I think there is a misconception with wls. I had a friend go from 285 to 130. I think I was told I'd lose like 60 lbs? My goal for myself was 150. I said I'd be excited to hit 140. Which is where I am now. I didn't really put any expectations on this, other then I just wanted to be healthy. I have a chronic lung condition, I was mid diagnosed as a teen with a condition and was put on steroids for 3 months on a very high dose- I gained 80 lbs in 2 months. And could never get it off. A few years ago I had a lung mass found and because of the location and size no surgeon will remove it since it's considered "stable" so they choose to treat it with steroids, 5 months of that cause weight gained again I couldn't get off. I was diagnosed with svt in 2015 and had an ablation at 33.So for me it was important to try to do everything I could to get the weight off, just to be able to give my lungs a fighting chance, and to avoid a pacemaker. I'm 36. I have a 15 year old that I want to see graduate high school, so I knew I needed to consider what my pcp was suggesting. It took me a full year to consider gastric surgery. At 230, I wasn't sure I was "fat enough" to qualify, but I had enough co-morbidities that got me approved. You may be in a stall right now, but keep going. Trust me I've delt with fair share of complications from it too. You're going to get there. Some journeys are tougher then others. But I bet in a few months you'll be one to tell someone who is doubting " you got this! I've been in that same spot!"

    Yup. I regret this.

For me, I've lost 75 since surgery (59.5% EWL - so pretty much the average total loss with the sleeve in 4.5 months), 89 since pre-op diet. I did it because I was concerned that I was starting to have some health complications (pre-diabetic, joint problems, generally hard to get around and travel). And it still wasn't worth it at this point for me. I would 100% go back and not do it if I knew then what I know now. I feel SO much worse now than I did before the surgery - even with the weight loss. I feel a bit like I've ruined my life. BUT for other people contemplating surgery, it's worth noting that the people who tend to post for support are the people who have problems - the people who are out there happily living their lives generally don't post that all is well. So, its best to have candid conversations with your doctor, read the research, and decide for yourself, not based on anecdotes on the internet.

    Revision-tufts

Usually, such a revision doesn't require the usual bariatric qualifications if it is to address a complication from an earlier (preferably approved or covered) procedure. So, if the reflux problem has been adequately documented, along with whatever efforts were tried to correct it, then it should be approved with minimal hassle. In such situations, one should try to get multiple opinions on the problem and proposed solution - these things tend to be more complicated than the original surgery, both in diagnosing the problem and solving it. Some surgeons who are particularly experienced with sleeve based procedures may be able to correct the problem with a re-shaping of the sleeve while others may not even try and just revise to a bypass without a second thought. Good luck in getting it resolved....

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I’m personally so so so sorry that your journeys have been so incredibly challenging and I hope all these complications are soon resolved! Please keep us updated.
  20. I’ve had my lap band since 1995, suppose to be deflated completely. For the last few years, I’m having horrible GI issues, choking on thick, liquid mucous at night, coming out of my nose. Occasionally so bad that I can’t breath and wake up gasping for air. I’ve tried sleeping elevated, sitting up. I never get a good nights sleep. I’m already on nexium which helped with the acid but not the reflux. It’s been so long since the band was placed I’m worried it’s adhered to my stomach and can’t be removed without causing worse complications. I’ve had several bouts with bronchitis, and chronic cough. My weight has fluctuated. I occasionally have to vomit when my stomach rejects something I’ve eaten. Wondered if anyone has suggestions on what I can do.

    Yup. I regret this.

I don't have the complications anymore, but my gripe is that I am not sure the complications I went through were worth the amount of weight I've lost so far. You never know if you're going to be "the one" that gets the short end of the stick. My surgeons assured me that I was "so young and healthy and everything would go perfect" and it was nonstop crap for the last 4+ months. I just hope it's over with now. I may feel differently if I hit my goal weight... people tend to forget the horribleness as time passes. But right now it's still fresh and I am slightly bitter. lol. I guess I am irritated because a) my first surgeon told me I would "definitely" get to 125 within a year and then he retired and my new surgeon said that was impossible and the surgery would "stop helping" once I hit 160-170 (I was told this AFTER I had the surgery) and b) I was told nonstop that "everything would be fine because I was so young, blahblahblah" that I naively believed it.

    Yup. I regret this.

It is reversible if there are serious complications, such as ulcers on the outside of the pouch, malnutrition, or chronic marginal ulcers. The surgery to reverse is very dangerous, so they only do it if you have persistent complications. They basically disassemble everything they took apart and sew you back to normal again. The second link below has pics of the new "whole stomach" again. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22810420 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4196428/

    Twisted sleeve anatomy

Hi - I did a little googling and found that it is a type of stricture in your stomach tube. Sounds like your may be minor? Do you have vomiting issues? An example in the most legible language I could find from a website (https://www.southwestsurgery.com.au/sleeve-gastrectomy/complications-of-laparoscopic-sleeve-gastrectomy) discussion possible complications: "Stricture (narrowing) of the gastric tube Stricture formation (narrowing) can occur in sleeve patients, and most commonly presents itself in a later phase after the surgery. Common symptoms include food intolerance, or nausea and vomiting. Narrowing can occur due to removing too much of the stomach, twisting or kinking at the angle of the stomach (incisura) or scarring related to inflammation. Endoscopic dilation of the narrowing with a balloon tend to help the patients however, this often need to be repeated. In extreme cases reoperation is needed often involving performing a gastric bypass operation. Prevention is the key to eliminate this problem with proper surgical technique, leaving ample of room near the angle of the stomach, proper use of the sizing tube, and the prevention of kinks or twist in the gastric sleeve by suturing the omentum back to the entire staple line."

Has anyone had a band over their sleeve?

Are you being active, getting at least 30 minutes of exercise every day? Are you monitoring your intake, eating dense protein and veggies/fresh produce first? Are you getting at least 80 grams of protein and 64 oz of non-caffeinated/non-carbonated/sugar-free liquid daily? Try getting back to basics. If those things still aren't working for you, talk to a surgeon about conversion to gastric bypass or duodenal switch. The anatomy of a sleeve makes placing a band extremely difficult (less stomach to work with) and much more prone to slipping and other complications.

    Scared/second thoughts

I hope to be like you guys that bounce back and without any complications. My biggest fear is the surgery itself, having complications. But I'm glad to know it's normal to feel like this and im not the only one who had these thoughts. Thank you so much for sharing I appreciate it more than you know[emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173][emoji173] Sent from my SM-G925T using BariatricPal mobile app
