  1. Hi! I'm 19 years old and am very excited to schedule my surgery. I'm going to get it done in Mexico so I won't have a lot of guidance aside from my mom who has also had gastric sleeve. I'm not considered obese (borderline), but I have had such severe body image issues from 12 years old to now that it makes me uncomfortable to even leave the house sometimes. My mom suggested surgery after I broke down in front of her which wasn't my proudest moment lol. I live a pretty healthy life otherwise, I don't drink soda, don't eat fast food, love veggies, etc. But nothing has made me lose weight. That's why I'm going to this extreme, nothing has worked for me. If anybody could give me any advice or guidance I would be so grateful! Sorry for the wall of text! I was scheduled for my suergy in march and then all this covid thing happened. Just friday they called me to tell me that my suergy was this up coming friday. Everything is just going very fast. Theirs alot of doctors calling me to give me so much instruction. And the surgeon when I asked him he just said, "you will be fine nothing bad is going to happened to you, you'll be fine to go home". But reading all these comments , I really dont know now. It might be because of the Covid situation. I really just hope everything does go well. My suergy will be in west los angeles. So it begins...

Just had my first appointment with the surgeon today, and holy gods the number of appointments I have immediately ahead of me! I have appointments for: Fasting labs; EKG; Pap smear; Mammogram; Ultrasound; IUD; Upper GI x-ray; Lower extremity venous duplex bilateral; I have to collect and measure my water intake and pee output for 2 days; Psychological computer test; 3 Nutritional evals; Psychological evaluation; Physical therapy evaluation; 7 weigh-ins; Plus, I just had this funky catheter/ bladder test; AND I have to make an appointment with my Sleep Dr. to get my CPAP adjusted too! (I have yet to schedule this appointment), and have 2 support group meetings TBD. Giminy Crickets- I'm kinda reeling at the enormity of it esp. since most of these tests/ appointments are happening in the next 2-3 weeks or so. Is everyone's experience this... exhaustive or am I just lucky that I have very *thorough* doctors? Oof. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited as Hell, but WOW. They gave me a binder to keep track of it all. 😳

    I think something is wrong?

In 2013 I got sleeved. By 9 to 12 months post OP I went through the same issues. I was able to work and focus, but I lost a desire for everything. I didn't have any interests, desires, and everything I used to care about was unimportant. I was also getting light headed and dizzy at that time. I know my diet at the time was too extreme. This is when I hit my lowest weight in a decade. Was 327 lbs. and got down to 209 lbs. I wasn't expecting weight loss to reduce my happiness so much. Unfortunately, the way I dealt with this was to just stop the extreme diet. I gained some weight back and most of these issues cleared up. I was probably dealing with a combination of poor nutrition, low blood pressure, and depression. Fast forward to today. I recently got a revision to DS. I again feel light headed and fatigued. My Doctor is adjusting my blood pressure medicine. I'm careful about getting all the nutrition, vitamins, and supplements I need. Now I'll follow a permanent, reasonable and sustainable diet.

Alright.. Now that I can finally sit at my computer for a bit.. I will share my experience.. Hubby woke me up at 5:30AM (He was already up because he was on night shifts). Took me a quick sip of water before realizing that I wasn't supposed to drink 2 hours before. Was truthful with the nurse and anesthesiologist, and it seemed to be okay. Anyways, I got to the hospital and was shown my room so that I could change into my hospital clothes and drop off my belongings. Once I changed, I was brought to the operating room where everyone started introducing themselves. They got me on the table and tried to make me comfortable as they could. My anesthesiologist held down a mask over my face that hurt real bad, to be honest. Felt like it was crushing my nose, so I tried my best to breath out of my mouth, but I could barely do that, which I am guessing was the point. I was injected with something before she said "goodnight" and then I woke up after surgery. I switched from the table to a bed, then was wheeled to recovery. I had two nurses looking over me - both were really sweet. I asked for some ice chips, and 30 minutes after being in there, asked to use the bathroom. They helped me in there and it was a struggle. I leaned forward to grab the toilet paper, which took all my strength, and right as I was about to wipe, I DROPPED IT. I managed to get it done the second round. We went back to my bed, and I was in and out of it for a couple of hours. I think I was there for about 2 hours after surgery before they called a porter to put me in a wheelchair to take me to my room. I was happy about this because I missed my husband and wanted to be close to him. We get to the room and he wasn't there. I was absolutely heartbroken. I wrote him asking where he was and he told me the nurses told him I wouldn't be back in the room until 2PM (It was roughly 11AM at this point). Either way, I was upset. Thought he was just leaving to grab a few things and come back. He jumped into a call with me and talked to me until he made it back to the hospital. All was fine.. We basically just laid around at that point. I tried getting up a few times and walking around the room because of all the advice I had been given on moving. I wanted to be out of pain as fast as possible. My hubby asked if I wanted to go outside with him so he could vape and I agreed.. We walked along a really beautiful river. The air felt so good. Once we came back, it was a matter of me being in and out of it again. I didn't drink enough water, I suspect, because I ended up with a pretty bad headache. I was sent home the next morning. I felt worse than the day before. I guess it was a lack of fluids and all the incisions where my stomach muscles didn't help with how I was feeling. I also can't really lift my neck forward without help from my hand, but sitting up is fine.. I started a timer once I got home and started drinking accordingly. I don't feel insanely better today, but I do feel a bit better. Cocio One goes down really well for me, so been drinking that quite a bit.. About to try some drinking skyr.. Wish me luck.
  6. Hey ya'll, I had gastric bypass yesterday morning, and after I recovered from the anesthesia I could swallow and drink a normal amount of fluids just like I always have, what is going on?! I am worried that maybe they did the sleeve instead of the bypass because the nurses and even the surgeon kept saying 'sleeve' and then I would say, 'no, I should be getting the bypass' and then they'd correct themselves and say they meant bypass. Anyway, I'm just really concerned why I am recovering so fast and able to drink gulps and fit as much fluid as I want, which has been a lot since my mouth has been super dry since I woke up from surgery. I also went vegan recently, which I knew would help with inflammation and my blood vessels and such, but I did not expect to recover so easily and so quickly and it's freaking me out a bit. 7. Morning everyone! Revised 5/27, feeling great, had post surgery visit yesterday - all is well, besides the hematoma - posted a topic the other day - but all is well .... surgeon isn't that concerned. Yesterday morning, I was woken up by this weird feeling in my chest, sat up fast and boom - acid vomit - light green bile looking. Didnt think anything of it till today --- same thing - this time I didn't vomit but the acid/bile or whatever it is - is horrendous. I thought, or I was hoping, that the revision would take care of this - and this is worse than before the surgery -- fluke? I'm on Prilosec, but normally that doesn't work for me, so the surgeon gave me Protonix yesterday, which I love... always worked, as did Nexium. What could it be? Could it be lack of food? should I maybe eat something before going to bed - even if protein shake? Thanks - hope all is well with everyone!!!

  9. I had my sleeve done in 2011, reached my goal weight of 138, and have maintained it since. I developed GERD about two years after the sleeve surgery. I've been on omeprazole since, the max dosage the past two years. GERD gave me an esophageal stricture which causes food and liquids to regurgitate back into my mouth after swallowing. It's truly gross to have to repeatedly reswallow the same mouthful of food. Sometimes things get stuck and I have to vomit them up. I've had a couple of endoscopies, a BRAVO study, and esophageal manometry. The manometry shows I have achalasia (impaired swallowing) too, not surprising when you only have a 12.5 mm wide esophagus. It was dilated during an endoscopy, but shrank back down fairly quickly. My surgeon wants to do a Heller myotomy to fix the stricture but a common side effect of myotomy is GERD. So he has to do something about the GERD, too, and that has to be some kind of bypass. Since I'm at goal weight with a BMI of 21, I don't have much spare poundage to lose. Plus I'm 65 and don't want to end up one of those "frail elderly" people who can't carry groceries or walk very far. I am hoping that my surgeon will make the very shortest bypass limb he can. Approval came a week after submission so I'm scheduled for June 29. No preop diet required. It's all happening a little fast and I'm a little freaked out. I think I've forgotten all the food stages :-). Support would be appreciated.
  10. My main concern with RNY was the increased limitations, should we need a serious drug up the road that is not adaptable to our new system. I do believe with the huge (pun intended) increase in bariatric surgery, more and more pharmaceutical companies are taking our dilemma to heart (and to the bank also)! Though surgeon said no more aspirin again, ever! You betcha one will be headed down my throat fast if a heart attack is suspected— Judgment in emergency situations. I believe NSAID’s are out for Sleevers just as they are for RNY-ers.? Not sure tho.. Nutrient absorption was also a RNY concern..but if you are a disciplined person who will take your supplements FAITHFULLY, for life, and ensure you eat balanced NUTRIENT RICH foods, I believe all will be well. Certainly will be healthier than the SICK route I faced with obesity.🤧
  11. Woke today without one! Gonna cross fingers it stays that way. You know... I was hoping the hot flashes would subside after surgery (another way we are twins). I've been reading about the estrogen release when the weight comes off quickly. Maybe that surge will stop them at least for a while? We can hope, yes? Meanwhile I'm taking a note that evening primrose and black cohosh help you. I went thru early meno at age 43 (I believe it contributed to my fast increase in weight these last few years) and have been suffering with hot flashes for 4 years. Thank you.

    June 2020 surgeries

Tomorrow morning is the big day for me!! I am so excited and so freaking nervous. My husband has been on night shifts this week, so I've been up all night with him. I am really hoping I can get myself to sleep at a normal hour tonight so I am not so exhausted tomorrow and don't spend tonight feeling miserably hungry from having to fast. Today we went out and purchased some mini milk (0.4% fat), cocio one, and skyr to be ready for the liquids when I get home from the hospital. There is a mention about blended soup but the recipe link isn't working, so will have to ask about it and pick up some things on the way back. How is everyone feeling post op atm? Any hunger pains?

    5 month post op update

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing great . I wanted to come here and share an update with you all. I had VSG in December and I’m so glad I did. Best decision ever! As of today I have lost 67 pounds and I’m am officially a healthy BMI! I can’t believe my clothes are a size small and extra small. I used to wear 2x! I am so happy. So much hard work and dedication goes in to this. This is def not the easy way out. A lot of sweat and tears to reach my goal. I workout every day. I purchased a bowflex since the gyms have been closed for a while now. I no longer eat meat, that was a huge change for me. Suddenly my stomach can’t handle meat at all. So I’m a pescatarian now. I still have at least a protein shake a day. My doctor said if I enjoy them I can continue to drink them, so I do. I used to be obsessed with sweets, I no longer like anything sugary. I went through a crazy hair loss for a few weeks. I was getting concerned since it was so much hair loss. Luckily it seems to have subsided. I no longer need my asthma medication daily, I have been on remission from RA and I haven’t had migraines in months! Even my GERD got better 😊. It feels great to see my doctors and have them congratulate me on my progress. There were plenty of times where stalls happened, or I felt I wasn’t losing as fast as other people. That’s when I took a step back and stopped comparing my journey to others; I started enjoying mine. I realized it’s not a race and eating healthy and being active I will surely lose the weight at my own pace. Sending everyone lots of positive thoughts and vibes. I hope you all are healthy and keep pushing. ❤️
  15. Sweetheart only thing I can tell you is remember everything that you learned for those first 6 months prior to surgery I'm not sure where you live but if you're a Costco member they have a lot of options for choosing the things that were supposed to allowed to eat but they're good like no GMOs baked whole wheat crisps with protein in every single chip and I found a big bag of chickpeas for snacking salted awesome protein and I tell you something I have had the most horrific experience with my bariatric surgery I can't specify which one because I had to have two different ones and not at my fault at the hands of the first surgeon that messed me up so bad the story is unbelievable I look horrible the first 6 months I dropped all my weight from 233 lbs down to 168 way too fast everything that I ever had as muscle boobs at all lost I don't have the hanging sagging skin but I'm skeletal I had nice boobs I know I heard stories about people who finished the bigness of their breasts but not like this mine is like just skin and I have always had nice breasts never had to wear a bra and now because those are gone that's what makes me look so skeletal my bones are sticking out for my collarbone you can see my top rib cage Alex sucked up like I'm some kind of drug addict or something I am very very sad I even have age that's all it did for me is aged me I look as old as my mother within I'd say it's been almost 2 years January it will be 2 years and I'm still having trouble finding an attorney to take the case I've had to take it and drop it the first dropped it because he did not know enough about bariatrics II dropped because all he was concerned about is how much money has law firm would lose if he didn't win and he just lost a case with bariatrics 120000 a cost at this for me said but he want to previous to that that's here nor there I'm sorry going off track here but you need to remember having a little bit of weight on you 173 I would love to be back that way that's a healthy weight unless you don't carry it very well and it's too much fatty fat instead of muscle protein protein protein do you work out cram the protein after if you are able you can buy a kayak it helps build your arms standing in front of a wall and put your palms up on it and that back couple steps and just do push-ups on the wall start there those are reps but it's also building the further back the heart of the pushing and then maybe you can start getting lower and lower until you're on a park bench and you're doing them sit on a picnic table put your feet hooked up under the seat on the other side and do sit ups if you have the energy to do that you can do those pretty much at any park I know it seems like a lot I have a damn exercise bike at right out there and I know I need to be building my muscles I literally don't have any the only reason I have a little bit back in my legs because I had to go to Florida and help my son move up here and he had mega steps up and down up and down with all the stuff but anyway I don't know how much you weigh before hand but it is not worth stressing your pouch I've had the sleeve done and who knew people have different shaped stomach sometimes there's actually several different ones I pretty much flipped out when I googled it but he and all of the bariatric surgeons are mandated and required to check the shape of everybody stomach prior to surgery and he did not do that with who knows probably none of his patients the surgeon who fixed me said I don't know why he didn't but we do end they keep track of you for the rest of your life but that first surgeon he did the cut for my sleeve and my stomach dropped and twisted almost shut and he would not listen when I kept trying to tell them there was something wrong I was regurgitating most of everything that I took in and if I was not the kind of person that if I couldn't find out by the doctors and they had no clue that I'm going to start researching what's going on with me so I was lucky enough to find out about the importance of thiamine which is vitamin B1 ... Because without that for specific amount of time and days there were two people same exact surgery that did not do the research and kept going back to the same idiot surgeon unfortunately in the hospice aim hospital and they both now cannot talk or walk and their in nursing homes ..I found an awesome surgeon that I knew exactly what was wrong and how to fix me but the only way to fix me is do a type of bypass but a shorter one okay but when he got into the side of me to do the surgery he said he could not believe how bad my stomach actually was twisted it was almost completely shut so he had to actually remove my stomach the rest of the stomach that was left from The cutting of the sleeve he said I should have never ever been offered sleeve because with the type of stomach I had there would have been no way to do it and I wasn't heavy enough at 2:33 really with my BMI to have a bypass and I wouldn't have had that anyway I wouldn't shows that I researched all my options prior to doing it begin with and that was not an option for me but in order for him to fix me that is the only thing that he was able to do and I had no choice so he made a itty bitty pause the size of an egg with the little part of some of the remaining sleeve before he had to remove it and I don't know how he did it but don't gain the weight this covered thing my personal opinion and I'm really sorry on some people don't agree I really don't share this much because it's not worth going into all stuff people it's kind of like talking politics LOL that's something you just don't do ... But I believe it's been blown out of proportion a little bit more then it needs to be maybe I'm wrong I do live in a small town in the country so it's not quite as bad as it is and I'm sure in certain States all that staying home and not working would have been necessary and doing it but not worldwide it just seems political it's definitely political... My point being don't allow the damn government to cause you to screw up everything you work so hard the gain or should I say lose... You've come too far before it gets too much more out of control if you don't want to search going up it goes fast and when you try to get it to go down it doesn't move so definitely protein vegetables fruit protein vegetables fruit avoid anything that has more than 9 grams of sugar in it and try to stay away from processed food just think healthy don't leave things out on your counter don't buy anything that you're not supposed to have at the store if you have the family that's going to be difficult but just try to remember using the small saucer for your portions anyway good luck with everything I've gone around John's barn on this one but sometimes we do that when we're talk texting lol stay safe much love good luck on your new life journey

    Pandemic Weight Gain:(

Your response was soo simple but effective. On Sunday I removed everything from my pantry that was not good for me, I felt bad for my husband and kids but if I want to continue to lose the weight I will need there support first. I dont want to give those bad habits to my kids either. They all have fast metabolism and are in skinny but that could change poorly health wise. So thanks for the response!
  18. I have learnt my lesson from eating too fast, took twice to learn. It is really painful. So now without any effort - small bites, chew lots, wait a little while, start over.
  19. Just want yo say i have lost 140lbs. My surgery was September 17 2019. Thats under a year. Im in disbelief. I never thought id be here this fast. I fee amazing. Just needed to get that out🙂
  20. Went to my consult, she said I was a perfect candidate for surgery. Dr Francois was blunt and honest about everything, no hand holding or holding back whatsoever. She said many people get this surgery thinking it'll fix their addiction or habits to fast food or junk food, and that's just not true. You need to make a change today, and not after the surgery. I'm one of those people who eat out a lot due to convenience and such and also am a picky eater. It sounds like she is approving of me getting it, but HIGHLY SUGGESTS a change in my eating habits. NO FAST FOOD, NO SODA!!! In short, I have been referred to a different city in IL to undergo this program ASAP. I haven't heard from them yet, but went ahead and asked the surgeon's office for the info so I can call myself in a few weeks or so if need be.
  21. How can I slow myself down from eating to fast. I have always eaten fast, I have to slow down or I'm going to ruin my stomach. Now I'm stuck haven't lost anything for about a month and I know it's because I eat so fast I'm eating to much.

    Can anyone help, or....

Winston, No bashing here...you have (literally) worked your tail off, and with the aid/supervision of a nutritionist so who are we to bash. I salute your hard work, determination, honesty in getting healthy. I believe each of us can learn something from one another in life if we’re open to honesty within ourselves. For me, and maybe many others who feel frustrated we’re not losing weight at warp speed like a few others, the lesson is there is almost Zero way we can lose SO much, SO fast without losing important and valuable muscle. Your experience illustrates well. Not many of us would have the sheer strength and determination to do what you’ve done first of all in losing SO much SO fast, and now, dedicated to the years of rebuilding it will take, as you describe so well. Maybe slow and steady wins this race, particularly for those of us without the strength and bodily constitution to try to warp speed it and then need to rebuild—-if we’re lucky enough to rebuild in not getting very sick in some way. Thanks for sharing, it helped my head and I wish you continued healing every single day of LIFE!

About the only way you can get revision is serious GERD. But weight gain that soon after sleeve may indicate to some surgeons you aren't ready to undergo another procedure. Check with your bariatric center and see if what you are eating is contributing to weight gain. (are you back to old habits like soda, fast food, junk food, snacking, grazing, etc,). Also be aware that some medications can cause weight gain. Check any meds you take for weight gain as side effect. You need to figure out what is really going on before considering surgery again. With the restriction gone from sleeve, your weight now depends on you and see what you can do to fix problem. Getting regular exercise? Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    5 years out

I'm two and a half years out - went down to about 114 but was really too thin. Then went up to 140 and definitely wasn't happy. My problem is very definitely sugar and carbohydrates. I'm a sober alcoholic (8 years this time out, and before the four year break (divorce + stupidity = relapse) was 22 years. Bu the point is that for me sugar is a drug and the insulin response I get from any processed carb works in pretty much the same way. So I've been working on killing sugar and processed carbs, plus grains and simple starches like potatoes, along with most fruit apart from small amounts of low GI berries over the last six months or so, trying various things. What have I learned: I can't do anything in moderation that isn't real food (by which I mean protein and fat and small amounts of carb appearing in leafy veg etc. This, alongside intermittent fasting (Dr Jason Fung is great on this) has begun to make a real change. Because it's not really about the losing weight for me now, although I want to lose about 15lbs still and it's beginning, It's about the need to be healthy, not to be constantly sickened by food, not to be constantly obsessed with food and to find a long term sustainable solution that allows me to get on with my life. Still hoping to cross addict onto exercise but that hasn't happened yet! Funnily, the post op diet which led with protein and allowed the veg and carbs in if there was room is closest to where I am now. I fast 16/8 - it varies but the average seems to be about 17/7. This is comfortable and I have loads of energy. Only been doing it a week properly and the keto for about a month but I was struggling with the macros and counting. Keeping it simple now. Be interested to hear if anyone is doing similar. What I would say is that my level of trust for something that doesn't involve someone trying to sell me special foods, vits, supplements, meal plans, exercise regimes is naturally quite high! Everything I need to do IF successfully if available for free. I like free! Actually - and again I'd be interested in people's thoughts here, I wish I'd discovered this and worked it pre-op. But hey, can't turn back time! Thanks all - this was a bit lonnnggg - sorry!
