  1. I too have had some weight gain- 40 of 107 lost. I don't know how it frieken happend. Anyway, I am told I got to thin so of the 40 I want to loose 15-20. Not feeling real motivated- have a couple vacations coming up. Overall I am struggling. I will be happy if I don't gain any weight over the next month or so. After my vacations I will hopefully get back on the wagon and start loosing. I had a tummy tuck and am very worried I ruined the results of that with the weight gain. I guess only time will tell on that. Get a fill and get back to basics. You can do it!
  2. I have been through all the pre-op steps and insurance approval and have a surgery date of 12/9. My problem is I quit smoking on 10/19 and I have gained 7-8lbs from that. I didnt even realize that I was overeating. Now of course I'm worried that I may run into problems with surgery. My surgeon's office made it clear that weight gain before surgery is not acceptable. Any one else have this problem? Starting today I'm going to the gym and watch what I eat....
  3. Hey everyone! I am getting sleeved tomorrow and I'm as nervous as all get-out. This will be my 6th surgery over all- when I was a kid, I had open heart surgery. Then I had a lap band in 2009. Two skin removal surgeries in 2013. And I had a lap band removal in 2014. Now, I'm getting the sleeve. I have this nervous feeling that my body wont be able to handle anesthesia for a sixth time. I know there are a lot of people who have had more surgeries than me, but my anxiety has to manifest somehow, I guess. I'm also excited, though. Here's a little bit about my back story: I was 385 lbs at 21 years old when I had the lap band in 2009. Lost 170 lbs and ended up being around 212 lbs at my lowest, after skin removal. I was a size 10/12, down from a tight size 28. In 2014, I had weird abdominal pain and swelling they couldn't figure out (turned out to be a kidney infection) so as part of the testing, they did a CT on me. When they did the CT, they found that the lap band had moved from its position. Explained the year and a half of upper abdominal pain I was ignoring and my weight gain. I had gained about 30 lbs by then. They removed the saline from my lap band and I instantly gained 10 lbs. So when I met with my surgeon, he gave me three options: (1) fix the band, (2) remove the band, (3) convert to a sleeve. He was pushing for the last option, but I was sick and incredibly gun shy about having another surgery. I was not ready to have them do anything else to my body. And my husband and I also wanted to start trying to have a baby, and I would have been postponed by at least a year. So I told him to just take out the band. I knew how to work out and eat right and I had worked my ass off before, so I didn't see why I couldn't do so again. Probably the worst decision I have ever made. I experienced injury after injury that led to more and more weight gain, compounded by the depression (triggered by a lot of things, not least of which was losing one of my biggest life accomplishments, weight loss). Two years later, I'm 322 lbs (as of today- my highest pre-op weight was 338, pre-liquid diet), I'm on a CPAP, my knees creak all day, I have a bulging disc in my back, I can feel my skin stretching around my plastic surgery incisions (which is another huge worry of mine- the plastic surgery recovery was far worse than the lap band itself, so I really don't want to have to redo it), I'm prediabetic again, my PCOS is back, and my life is basically on hold. My worry that I would postpone trying for a baby for a year became 2 years of weight gain that will lead to at least another year, if not longer, of postponing the baby. That's 3 years, instead of the 1 if I had gotten the sleeve 2 years ago. But hindsight is 20/20, I guess. And if I wasn't ready for the sleeve, then I wouldn't have done well on it. So I'm glad that I'm doing it now. And I already feel better after losing 18 lbs on the liquid diet. My clothes fit better, I don't hear myself breathing as loudly as before all day. It's only gonna get better from here. I can't wait to get back to working out 6 days a week. Besides the clothes and the confidence, the thing I miss most is being strong and working out. I was doing an hour of cardio 6 days a week, yoga 5 days a week, and strength training 4 days a week. At 212 lbs., I was fit, pain free, with a flat stomach and probably no more than 30 lbs to lose. I need to get back to that, and continue down to a lower weight. If you pray, please pray for me tonight. If you don't, send out good vibes into the universe for me. And if you need a prayer, I was taught that the prayers of the sick are closer to God, so I'm happy to pray for you during my recovery. Much love to you all, Ayah

    Weight increase

FYI: anitibiotics have been known to put on weight gain because it regulates our hormones, meaning your energy is low so you would have a tendency to eat more. Its very common, and happens to many of us. It could work either way, loss or gain.

    Anyone getting their surgery soon?

Good luck next week! I'm in Georgia and I just had my bypass on 05/05/15 I feel fantastic and am ready for these lbs to start coming off. Heads up you will see a weight gain after surgery depending on how anesthesia and IV fluids affect you but don't worry cause it's temporary
  6. So I am about 5 weeks pre-op. How many of you gained weight before going on the liquid diet? I don't feel that I am going nuts but it is SOOOO easy for me to gain that just by relaxing and eating the things I normally wouldn't, I have started gaining :-( I am perpetually on a limited eating plan / diet to try and lose weight (which obviously doesn't work) and now am eating things I typically wouldn't like bread, milk, Cereal etc. Anyway, I don't want to jeopardize the surgery but I will do the two week liquid diet, just wondering how many of you gained once you had made the decision to do the surgery?
  7. Thanks for the reply. So to clarify, you also GAINED weight for about the first week but beyond the week you ended up losing? It's just something I haven't read anywhere - I've read stagnant/ no change or minimal loss at first. But continuous weight GAIN is not something I've read in anyone else's experiences. If that happened to you and others and then you ended up beginning to lose despite increasing food intake over time, then I would feel a lot more 'normal' about myself right now.
  8. Hi, My sleeve was done about 9 days ago. Initially, I slept for 3 days with very minimal oral intake. Ended up 9.8 lbs DOWN when I woke up post-op day #4. I assume that wasn't fat loss since it had only been 3 days - probably just loss of water weight from no food/ limited water intake in those first few days when I wasn't awake enough yet, which I know is temporary artificial weight loss. But I didn't expect that I would start gaining again literally starting post-op day #5. Since then, I've been gaining it all back. 1-2 lbs per day. I'm on a full fluid diet still as required with Plus 2 protein shakes a day. Max 500 kcal per day for now. Yet my weight has been going up starting on post-op day #4 onward, ~5 lbs in ~5 days. I'm nearly back at my original weight pre-op about 9 days ago. I know that weight re-gain is a common thing post sleeve but I thought that was after months or years. Has anyone had the experience of weight gain starting basically right after surgery? And if so, can you tell me if your body eventually caught up and started losing and by what week after surgery did you start losing? If I'm not able to start losing on such a restricted immediately post-op diet with 300-500 kcal per day max right now, how can I expect to start LOSING when my intake inevitably goes up to something resembling more of a sustainable level of intake? Thanks.

    The Countdown has begun

I appreciate the posts. I, like you "ScaredtoDeath" am in the process of trying to determine if it's actually something I will do. The Pro's definitely outweigh the Con's, but nevertheless it's surgery and the alteration of the body. My concerns? Leakage, weight gain after the first two years, but more than anything what am I to say to my kids. My son (9) is starting to eat more than his fair share and I see him having problems if I don't intervene. Question...how do you tell your kids to watch what there eating if you can't? It's a serious question that I haven't heard many people talk about. Once the surgery is done (I expect to have surgery Feb/Mar) what do I tel my son when he tells me he's upset with himself because of the habits he's engaged in. He's already had people make fun of him and will not take his shirt off at the pool. This is exactly how it started with me. I was 160 lbs in 6th grade, 300 in 9th grade, and now 350lbs at age 34. Although, I have lost 100lbs twice in my life it's never stayed off and my Doctor thinks I'm an ideal Candidate for this type of Surgery. As you can tell, I'm a bit twisted...
  10. In May I will celebrate my 3rd surgiversary and I should be thrilled but this past year has been a struggle. I started out at 250lbs, did excellent the first year of my sleeve with weight loss, by May of 2016 I'd released about 80lbs and was 170lbs -about 10-15lbs from my 155-160 lb goal. Then I started having gallbladder attacks and ended up having it removed in an emergency procedure in August of that same year. The following month my father passed away (he was only 65) and I started to notice that I wasn't following my diet plan as closely. I gained about 10lbs within and was 180lbs by January of 2017. A few months later I had some other family changes that involved several very close family members moving away out of state, some of my core support. I tried to stay on track with exercise, training for a 5k then developed a bone spur (osteoarthritis) and was told not to run by my Dr. That was this past summer. I am now at 192lbs and feel like I can eat more before becoming full, have been completely unmotivated to exercise and eat right. I'm feeling angry, guilty, upset and completely confused about how this is getting out of control. Has something similar happened to anyone else? Can anyone please recommend some resources to help motivate me or get me back on the journey towards my healthy goal? I am very independent and hate asking for help, but for goodness sake, I had an operation that involved cutting out half my stomach and now I'm gaining weight again? I never thought I'd find myself here...
  11. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on April 12th 2016 and I could tell there was a problem right after. I couldn't keep anything down I found out I had a kink in my sleeve. They sent me to gastrointestinal doctor who dialated it with a balloon on August 12th 2016, October 20th 2016, and again on April 28th 2017 (it kinked 3 times so far and I think it is kinking again). But I made it from day of surgery weight of 254 to 162 in January 2017 I was happy as a clam. Recently I've been gaining weight I had to cut my working out quite a bit because I had to have knee surgery on may 12th 2017 I also have fallen off the good food wagon a bit and started drinking soda more then i should and cut back on water which I shouldn't have. I'm going to start back to a healthier lifestyle and cut the soda to low to none amount. I have gained almost 15lbs in the last 5 or so months and I am so scared that I will gain it all back. I need support on my journey, words of encouragement, someone to say you are going to be ok. I went to put on a pair of jeans I did fit in fine before this morning and they were a tight I broke down and cried, I feel i may be going backwards.
  12. Off weightloss topic (but still birth control topic): How long does the shot actually last? I'm on birth control pills (had to stop them a month before surgery to avoid blood clots) and I'm so sick of forgetting 1. I'm 46 and not in the mood to get pregnant and not into the IUD and condoms. Just curious about it. However, after reading about the weight gain, I'm having 2nd thoughts. But they say that with BCP's too and I've never noticed any gain myself. Just curious how long they last...

    Weight Gain over Christmas :(

I am 3 years out and had put on 10 lbs over the holidays. I too have kicked my self and been very angry for falling back into old habits and irrational thoughts. This is all cognitive too. I am a sugar addict and even though I knew this, I kept eating all the candy I wanted, and it had become habit to put into my mouth without a thought. I would then rationalize and say I would stop tomorrow. Each day it was tomorrow. This was a flash back to the past.... So in the past two days I have stopped eating carbs, I have a protein drink in the AM and a healthy high protein meal for lunch, and protein for dinner.. I am following the 5:2 diet plan also. I just did 2 days of eating 700 calories and I lost 2 lbs. This diet is posted here. The diet saids to do 500 calories but I struggle with keeping it that low. So if I can do this so can everyone else here. Don't be too hard on yourself, this is a learning lesson. Get back on the wagon and stay away from carbs and keep portion size small. I can eat more but I'm not hungry. I'm over eating and that caused weight gain. but it tasted so good is the rationale I would use. In fact, I was just making excuses. We really don't need to eat as much food as we have and other people are still eating. Less is better and healthier. Hang in there and be good to yourself...

    Weight Gain over Christmas :(

Great job on the loss!!!! I was right there with everyone on the holiday weight gain. But I got it under control and did 9 days of liquids and you would not believe how much stronger my restriction is again now. It's like being fresh out of surgery. I did it because I read a post from someone who thought they'd stretched their sleeve and their doctor put them on one for 2 weeks. They did xrays and there was a substantial difference between the before and after, feeling like I do now I believe it. Strongly recommend doing it if you feel like I did about the quantity of what you can eat.

    had the Upper GI today

seems upper GI was "normal" -- with minor dilation that is expected given I am 3 yrs with band -- told doc I don't like the pain when I eat (and not the get stuck pain) but this other weird pain for the last 6 months. So I am going to push for the revison and have them submit to insurance and we'll see. He is also going to do an endoscopy (which means an empty band and more freaking weight gain)

    Hello

Hello I am new at this site. I am scheduled for lapband surgery on 8/16/10. I am a little nervous when I read of the struggles of weight gain after being banded. I hope I can do this.

    Alcohol Consumtion

I think carbonation varies from person to person. For me, I feel no pain at all and I enjoy a nice cold beer fromt time to time :welldoneclap:. That being said, there are a lot of calories in alcohol so make sure you compensate for them in your calories for the day by cutting back or exercising more to keep from weight gain. I have lost over 70 lbs in the past 6 mos and have had alcohol in my life since the get go and do not plan on giving it up any time soon (I am only 25...) but it really is inidvidual. I have a friend that absolutely cannot stand carbonation, she says it causes intense pain. IMHO anything that causes pain you should avoid but for me there is none so I sip sip sip and i am fine. ~Liz~ 03/10/06 241/168/160 5'7''

    MOODY! !

I had a similar reaction but a different explanation. For years (unknown to me) I had pancreatic tumors that secreted insulin. The results (aside from massive weight gain) was that every few hours, no matter what I ate, I would experience a pretty steep drop in blood sugar. Diabetics learn to recognize this and everyone reacts in their own way. I have a cousin who gets sweaty panic attacks and knows his BS is low. For me, the sea monster would rise out of the ocean and I felt hungry. Removal of 2/3 of my pancreas (mostly) solved this. But post op (and for a few weeks while my body adjusted to my new intake levels), I would get the sea monster but not feel the hunger so I didn't realize where my bad mood was coming from. Once I did, I would have some broth or a sip of Protein shake or distract myself. Once I just took myself out of the house to spare the other residents. For me, all this (mostly) passed around week 3. But I watch out for it because it still happens, especially on days (like holiday prep days) when I get so busy, I get off my food and Water intake.
  19. Same here, I did gain some weight back, up to another size but with the edema, we're not sure if it is true weight gain or edema that's making the problem. My legs and feet swell and my belly is starting to go like the kids you see on TV.

I am in the beginning stages as well and my husband obviously knows, my parents know, and one of my best friends that doesn't know anyone else in my circle knows. My husband is 100% supportive and he was the person I was most nervous discussing this with since health wise i have gone through some craziness over the last few years, but he is on board. My parents acted supportive at first until my mom had a moment and freaked out but mostly because she's worried as moms usually are. She did however say she thinks I will regret this decision, but she also isn't well informed either. Now my BFF was the surprising one, she is always super supportive and right there with me, however not this time. She has attempted to talk me out of it and since she is a Pilates trainer I got the sanctimonious work out talk from the person who has never been fat a day in her life or struggled with the weight gain from medical issues. I don't plan on telling anyone else unless directly asked since it's none of their business and since my surgery won't be until roughly end of February if I want to use the new resolution excuse I can. I'm sure I have others that will be supportive but I want to do this for me and not them so I don't feel necessary to include a bunch of people in the decision. Having so many cooks in the kitchen is never a good thing. Good luck in finding what's right for you, I hope you can have the support you need! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    confused and afraid

Wow, sounds like we have the same beginning, so let me introduce myself. I'm Serenity, I'm 19 and from northern California. I have always been extremely active, and although I wasn't as small as you, at 16 years old I was a perfect 110 pounds. Unfortunately, I too was sexually/physically/mentally assaulted at that age, and the tolls have been enourmous. I went through, similar to you, many different forms of therapy, and many many medications to battle the post traumatic stress as well as the insomnia and anxiety. Although the depression, anxiety, and insomnia have pretty much gone away thanks to the medications and time, I managed to put on about 115 pounds in three years. Wow, right?! That's what I said. I was completely in denial of how much weight I had gained until I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Because of my rapid weight gain I now stop breathing in my sleep. Not only is it horrible for my health, but it's definately not easy having friends over when I'm stuck wearing a cpap machine to bed. Hence how I ended up looking into the lap band surgery. Throughout those three years I have tried every diet, every personal trainer or work out video i could get my hands on, and after losing the initial 10 pounds or so, I couldn't get anymore off. I, too, am feeling a little confused and afraid of the lifestyle changes I must commit to in order for this "tool" to be helpful, however, I feel that missing out on normal teenage activities is harder than those lifestyle changes. I would love to be able to snowboard again, or go to the waterpark without crying for hours and hours at a time. I would love to go play football in the rain, skip around the mall, or even go hiking again... and for me the lifestyle changes totally seem worth it to be able to do the things i love doing again. Growing up in everything from beauty pageants, to dance classes, to an amazing 8 years cheerleading, I never thought I would be in the position I am now. I think gaining this weight has taught me alot about life, and people in general, but I also think it's time for me to take action and do what I need to do to be happy again. I would love to talk to you if you think it would help.. I'm excited I found the teen forums because I really wasn't relating much to the 40's and 50's year olds..

    Got done yesterday

Congratulations on a successful surgery. Yes the weight gain is definitely fluid especially since you haven't been eating. Totally normal.

Fill Follies & Sweet Spot Wonders

I have not been gaining. Steady loss here. I was too tight for two months and just sort of stalled. This time it was about 26 hours. I am good now. When I am too tight, I take the healthy food I should be eating normal and blend it in the Bullet. I think that is what held off the weight gain. I am almost to the 60 lb mark! I need to hit it soon!

    2months post op

Im also 2 mos post op. Been on stage 4 over 2 weeks. No weight gain, still losing just a bit slower. Your body is already becoming conditioned to eating less. This is the trial n error stage. Atleast 3 incidents of getting sick and projectile vomiting. Thats a swift kick in the butt to let u know stage 4 or not, pace urself, cant eat that yet, maybe next month. LOL. Just have to keep up the protein n water intake. Good luck. CW 203 VSG 1/6/2017 SW 242 GW 140 Woohoo ...summer 2017 here we come :-)
