Too Much exercise Matter?
BLERDgirl replied to Jbear65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are working out regularly, especially cardio you need to up your Protein. Protein feeds your workout. -
Okay so I am 3 days into my soft solid/solid phase and here is what's not working for me: Egg salad (sits way to heavy and turns me off..used to love egg salad ) Refried Beans Chilli only from houlihans ( so gross ) wendy's or homemade is sooo much better! Hard boiled eggs Here's what is working for me Deli ham Deli cheese Believe it or not I tried a teeny tiny chicken cutlet (2 oz) my step mom made and it went down beautifully ...I just chewed it extremely well Quest Protein bars Cooked tofu (Chinese style) from whole foods..my boyfriend got this rice dish that they made for him and he chose the spicy peanut sauce tofu as his meat and he gave me a little piece and it went down beautifully also lol..tofu is amazing and high in protein ???? so happy to finally be chewing food! CurvyCakes replied to elenasal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 5 of my pre-op liquid diet and I've found the different brands of broth can vary in taste so I say find one u like it can live with just note our taste buds can change. Post-op during my week of Clear Liquids I plan to have the following: Broth Crystal Light SF Popsicles SF Jello Isopure fruity drink with 40grams of protein. Not sure if I can stomach it because it taste pretty gross but has a ton of protein. -

So, this month I will be at 2.5 years post-op. I had a regular appointment with my PCP and since I've felt fatigued lately I thought my Iron or B12 values may be low, so we ran a full CBC, B12, Nutrition Panel and Thyroid panel. Except for my TSH being a little higher than it was last time, but still well within the normal range, every single other value is almost exactly at the middle of the normal range. I am happy about this because, well, I've been quantitatively proven to be healthy, but also because I don't follow the diet plan of the sleeve at all, so I am happy that my body seems to compensate well for not always getting what it is in theory supposed to be getting. I go months of forgetting to take my B12 and iron, I never get the Protein I'm supposed to have everyday, and I eat a lot of crackers, minimal vegetables, no fruit, and pretty much only chicken from Chik Fil A in the form of grilled nuggets. So, thankfully, my values last year were also pretty much the same as this year, so I have had consistently good indicators that at least this far out from surgery for someone who doesn't really adhere to the nutritional suggestions, my 20% of a stomach has not contributed to harming my health. If anything, given that I started at 237, I hit goal of 129 last April, and in 15 days I will have maintained at goal, the sleeve has substantially improved upon my health, especially when my blood work values are also considered.

My mother in law gave me a recipe for a smoothie, it sounded absolutely gross, so I ignored it. She insisted I try it, and since I have trouble getting in all my veggie and fruit servings, I did. It was delicious. Just try it! Let me know what you think! 1/2 cup plain greek yogart 2 tbsp splenda 2 tbsp fat free evaporated milk 1small banana (frozen when possible) 1 small peach (peeled and sliced) 2 strawberries 2 1/2 cups fresh bagged spinach 1/2 cup ice Blend until smoothie.... 14 grams protein! All your veggie/fruit serving for the day!

Sliders aren't necessarily high calories/fat/carbs, but are simply foods that go through our stomachs easily and with little restriction. Many of the junk foods that we should avoid fall into that category - ice cream, chips, twinkies, crackers and the like. But many low calorie/high nutrition foods can also be sliders - peppers, onions, spinach, avocado (ok, not so low cal, but good nutrition when you can afford it), tomatoes and the like tend to go through me fairly easily (can you tell that I just made a salad?) and when added to some meat can increase the volume consumed with little caloric impact but a good addition to the daily nutrition. I would often have mixed meat and veg meals - stews, stir fries, salads, chili and the like once my Protein intake was fairly reliable and I could back away a bit from the "protein first" rule. "Slider" is a bit like color - it is neither good nor bad, it just is. Green leafy vegetables are generally good, while green fuzzy meat is not. The same with sliders, and that can be used to your advantage as you progress through this process - benefit from the good sliders while avoiding the crap sliders. The greek yogurt that is often recommended is a great slider for getting in additional protein when meats and other firm Proteins are too restricted.

7 Weeks Out and Constantly Starving!
LumpySpacePrincess replied to LumpySpacePrincess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I thought this for awhile, too, but no it is really physical hunger. I'm eating 6 times per day, so I don't think I could fit in any more Protein than I'm already taking in, since my surgeon wants me to have those two veg servings and one fruit serving per day. -

hmmmm, Maybe it's not hunger, since your head isn't hungry??? Try to increase dense Proteins a bit and see of 'saitiety' helps. You wanna make your stomach feel full. It helps me. Keep us posted. (I gurgle and bubble a lot, but I tell myself I am not hungry...) -
Weight lost has slowed..just hit 4 weeks..Is this normal?
Trulyabeautifulbeing posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I had my surgery on 6/29, after being a Lap Band patient from 9 years ago. I have lost so far 21lbs. I find myself on the scale everyday, just to be sure that I am not going in the wrong direction, which I probably need to stop doing. I just came back to work this past Monday, and it seems that I am moving round more but I haven't lost a pound. Again, being that I have been down this road, I want to be sure that we have as many WINS as we can. I just want to be sure that I am doing okay ya'll. I go for my 4 week follow up with my doctor tomorrow. Ya'll know I am over the shakes, but I still drink at least one every morning, and try to get the rest of my Protein through my food, and if anyone knows of another one that's a little easier to deal with or other ways to get my protein in besides Celebrate? I've heard about gummies and other stuff , but I just want a little more input. Of course I get full quickly, so I stopped adding almond milk to my shakes because it makes it to much. I am literally trying to get in the 4 oz. per hour. So now I'm just mixing it with Water, which isn't too bad. Any suggestions of anything more that I can or should be doing? I'm watching how my body reacts to anything that I eat, which is a job in itself. Some of ya'll have had great successes, and I want to be successful too!! I am open and very receptive!! -
It depends on a number of things... A biggie is protein intake. Your body has to have protein to heal itself. This was a real problem for me my first week post op. I did not consume much protein at all and my incisions healed verrrryyy slooowwwly. When I moved on to full liquids though they started healing well. It took about a month for my incisions to be fully healed (no scabs). Hope that helps!

Until you get your fill do as you were in the beginning to control hunger, get a low calorie high protein drink. The protein will keep you fuller longer and low calories/carbs wont harm you in the end. Hope this helps, sucks when you are hungry and feel like you can still eat! Also sugar free popsicles and Jell-O.

I tried a lot of protein drinks before I landed on premier, o won't go to anything else now.. Some people have to use the isolate cause it might be easier on their stomachs. It has 30 grams of protein so I will continue with it I am 4 weeks post op

When did you start your protein drinks
BBdoodle replied to copmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used my Protein shake as a 10 a.m. snack (64 gram) I could not gulp it..it took about 45 minutes to get the whole thing down. I siped, siped, siped all day and night. At the beginning of each day I would put crystal light or what ever powder flavor i was using into 4 16.9 oz bottles, all I had to do was make sure I drank all 4 bottles by the time i went to bed. My surgeon/nutritionist gave me all written instructions before the surgery and then sent me home from the hospital with more written instructions on exactly what I should be eating/drinking and when.. They game me the 3 day post op instuctions, 1 wk, 2 wk, 3 wk, 4 wk, etc. etc. I would contact your surgeon because each one is different in their post op instructions. -
I'm having surgery on June 25. Things have gone fairly quickly, I was quite surprised that it took my insurance company only 1 week to approve me for lap band surgery. I'm going to be out of town the whole 10 days pre-op where I can only have liquid protein so I'm packing my suitcase with Slimfast. This is going to be one fun business trip!

I'm not perfect by any means. I try to do right but I have only gotten in 60 grams of protein ( my doc's recommended amount) ONE day since surgery on 12-16-13. I do eat protein at every meal and try to eat it first. I have never gotten in 64 ounces of water--never! And, I can't stand the protein shakes. But, I have been exercising more since I had surgery. I've lost about 45 pounds since surgery. That's an average of 2-4 pounds a week. I also lost 40 pounds pre-op. I'm satisfied with my results. Down from 322 to 233.8!!

Sound like you are doing great!! i hope i can do that too! why do they want you to have so much protein? is it to burn fat? or keep you fuller?

being "perfect"
TheRealMeIsHere! replied to girliegirl's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I would just remind you, that while your stomach is tiny, it is easier to learn new ways to prepare your food and make healthier choices. Your stomach will be much bigger a year or two after surgery and weight CAN be regained if you are eating the way you did pre-sleeve. Slider foods and trigger foods should be avoided. You will crave them less, the more you stay away from them. There are many sites that can show you recipes for your favorite foods that will satisfy the taste you desire, while still sticking with the plan. For example: I enjoy fried 'rice' made with cauliflower, Protein pancakes, muffins and Cookies made with Protein powder, pizza crust made out of cauliflower, cheesy 'tater' tots made out of cauliflower, salad that has all the flavor of an Italian sub, eggplant, zucchini, or spaghetti squash for Pasta, cannoli cream made with FF ricotta, etc......... -
Getting ready to be banded in September
Bandolita replied to Tat19808's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there! I was banded in December 2016, and so far so good! (84 lbs down to date) I did not go the route of protein powders, and instead relied on Premier Protein shakes (from Costco). They are 30 gm of protein in each shake and taste pretty good compared to some of the others I tried. During the soft food phase, I ate lots of beans (refried, etc...) as the taste of "pureed meat" was less than satisfying. They were soft, filling and provided a decent amount of protein. (Note: I understand that some banders do/did not tolerate beans well, but I was just fine.) I can't stress enough how important a good vitamin regimen is. I didn't do well with that piece when I started out and started to have some significant hair loss. Everything's good now that I'm taking the right vitamins (a bariatric supplement regimen recommended by my doctor and dietician), but the first time I showered and had a fist full of hair fall out I was horrified! The biggest tip I can give you is to make sure that you remember that the band is a tool and not a miracle worker. Use this first year with the band to reevaluate your relationship with food and what you want to put in your body going forward. Eventually, you'll get to the point where you can eat just about anything again - prepare yourself for that! I consistently remind myself that I eat for nutrition, and to make sure that I'm putting the best things into my body that I can. Good luck!!! -
I’m not perfect by any means I don’t do much excise I don’t drink even 1 glass of Water a week let alone a day. I am not hardcore on eating I will eat junk food Snacks like chocolate chips Cookies etc if I want just a little bit though. I do eat healthy I don’t eat rice Pasta potatoes very little bread I don’t eat take away at all and rarely eat out but that’s due to me being a tightwad and not wanting to pay x amount for the little I eat lol I drink Protein shakes and I take my Vitamins that’s about it. So yeah not perfect by any means its not all organic no cheating what so ever gym 6 times a week water water water at all for me. I’ve lost over 200lbs what I do works for me I don’t go over the top with my bad habits and I don’t go over the top being perfect either I just live the way feels good and works for me.

Spending a day in court tomorrow
Bufflehead replied to fezik23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
individual serving size packets of tuna or salmon turkey pepperoni individual serving size packet of peanut butter or almond butter protein powder + a shaker bottle (you should be able to get bottled water or milk at the courthouse - most courthouses will have a snack bar type place - also if they do, they should have things like yogurt & cottage cheese for sale. You may want to check with the courthouse in advance and see if they have a snack bar or other place to buy ready to go food, or perhaps even a cafeteria which would likely have food you can eat). -
Post Surgery Diet and Loss Rates
GradyCat replied to CelticBeautyEvolving's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
We lose weight faster during the liquid phase because it's right after the surgery and that's when the greatest weight loss is. Now at 4 months post-op I don't think doing a liquid diet for two weeks would generate greater weight loss than continuing eating the protein foods than I am now eating. Also, the first six months is the greatest period of post-op loss and happens slightly quicker than later.
