    Cruise 4 months after surgery

I'm curious for the replies also. I have surgery in July and in January I'm going to a 5 star All Inclusive Mexico resort for my wedding. Same thing I didn't know about the surgery when we decided. However it was where I met my fiancé so the destination picked itself. Normally I would be up for partying all day long in the pools, and enjoying the delicious food..I've taken a different mindset because there's no other way to do it, and I'm going to make my vacation all about looking fantastic in awesome new outfits and picking alcohol more carefully. I'll also need about as much willpower as possible to stay away from cold beer and tequila, my vacation favorites. I've just got my fingers crossed that habit will have set in by then and I'll be okay without the normal binging that comes with vacation. Plus I gain about 10lbs every vacation I go on, so I won't have to deal with that this time

    Alcohol?

What is anaphylaxis? My sister had gastric bypass 10 years ago and became a raging alcoholic and chain smoker. I don't even know how she's still alive, she doesn't eat she just eats gummy bears and drinks and smokes. I've put her in rehab 5 times but she always fails and she hardly drank before surgery.
  3. Hello...I was wondering if anyone ever took a cruise shortly after surgery and if so, how did u deal with not being able to eat much or drink alcohol? I am having surgery in 3 weeks then in November I'm going on a ten day cruise. I didn't know I was having surgery when I booked it and I got the unlimited drink package and the upgraded restaurant package lol... Now here I am like an idiot, I won't be able to enjoy any of it will I? It was first cruise too!!! Anyone ever had this issue? Will everyone around me eating and drinking drive me crazy? Will I be able to have one glass of wine per day or no? Thanks!

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

Yea the carbonation stretches your stomach is a myth that science has disproven. It's one of those axioms that some surgeons spread because it's easier than going into detail. That said, carbonation irritates my stomach something fierce. OUCH!!!! Tried it accidentally (ok more like mindlessness at a party where I was finally relieved to find a NON alcoholic beverage so forgot mineral water was sparkling). That was about six months post op. Haven't tried it since. Was a HUGE Diet Pepsi drinker pre op. Haven't looked back!

    Alcohol?

If you trusted the surgeon enough to cut you and remove 80% of an organ, you may want to give his opinion on alcohol consumption some more thought. I had a few drinks at 5 months, but I have the sleeve and I had clearance with my surgeon. First time you drink there is a very real possibility of getting sick.

    Alcohol?

I have been wondering about alcohol as well! I am getting married in 4.5 weeks and want to have some wine with the toasts or even a few sips of my favorite apple crown with the wedding party on the way to the reception! At that point I will be a little over 4 months post op. I have my 3 month post op appointment today but I know if I mention it to my surgeon he will tell me no as he is against drinking after bypass! I just want to celebrate a little nothing crazy!!
  7. This bodes well for many sleevers, or WLS people in general, who have non-alcoholic/drug induced liver disease (NAFLD/NASH):

How do you deal with social events?

As obvious as it sounds to say it... go and don't drink. If people are gonna be asses about it, you don't have to tell people you're not drinking, if you don't want. Order something virgin at the bar that looks vaguely alcoholic and sip it. I did that when I was newly pregnant but didn't want people asking questions LOL. Or, alternatively, be open that you're not drinking because you're looking after your health. People should respect that, and if they don't that's on them! You could say you don't want to drink your calories, or say your doctor needs you to be extra careful with your liver, or or or. People quit drinking for plenty of reasons! You don't have to avoid social situations just because you can't have alcohol, though. This is lifelong. Even if you do decide to start drinking alcohol again (which you absolutely can if you want, post sleeve, you just have to be conscious about how much you're drinking and follow your surgeon's directions on when it's safe to have a drink post-op), there will always be other situations where you will not be able to do things the way you used to, or participate the same as others do... eg going out to a restaurant you might have to order a noticeably smaller portion, or say no to the deep fried chicken wings everyone else is having on wing wednesday, etc. We just have to find our own way to participate in these rituals that allows us to maintain connections with people and be a part of social events without compromising our right and our responsibility to care for our bodies.
  9. Try to stay away from alcohol for 6 months to a year. It's hard on your already stressed liver. Drink water and tea, and nibble on olives, cheese, nuts, fruit, etc. When in doubt, eat before you go.
  10. I am 4.5 weeks post VSG, and I think I just had my first dumping episode! I drank my first cup of coffee (caffeine) with flavored creamer (sugar) and a tiny half-shot of Bailey's (alcohol and more sugar). What in THE WORLD was I thinking?! Please, I implore you, don't make my idiotic mistake. This was the absolute sickest I think I've ever been in my life! A full hour in the bathroom, never feeling confident which end would go first. They most intense gas pain I've ever endured. Sweating, writhing around. Praying God would just take me. If this story helps just one person resist temptation simply by scare-tactic, I'll feel better. [emoji21] Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app

    Drinks after sleeve

I would like to respond about the carbination. Everyone's recovery might be different. However I would recommend now having carbination yet. I know that air in the stomach right now isn't good for it because it expands it. I know ppl who had bypass a while ago who will drink soda and another one who admits it bothers them when they drink it. I think it takes time and then you can try it and see what works for you. I will want to have a beer in the future. I am 5 weeks post op. When I can have alcohol according to my surgeon I will have non carbinated for a while. Then when I am ready I will try carbination again and see how I tolerate it. Essentiall the idea is that medically we will be able to eat and drink anything and everything again, but in smaller amounts. In the meanwhile... You could make some sort of uncafinated tea and make it iced if you want. Starbucks/Tazo Passion tea is non cafinated and has great flavors. I also love the water flavorers- mio or whatever you can find. There's different flavors. I like the fruit punch and iced tea. Also protien waters taste good. Atkins has a water with 20g per bottle! My surgeon said it can't count as water because I was not getting enough water. But it's something you can drink and helps with your protein goals. Hope this helps a bit -Joe M.
  12. I was hesitant from the very first appointment -- last October. I was worried I would miss out on too much, especially alcohol and caffeine tbh. I only half-heartedly did the 6 months supervised dieting, the whole time thinking I wouldn't do it. Then once surgery was approved by ins and scheduled, I was excited. The month prior to surgery I was really committed, quit all alcohol and sugar, etc, and lost around 10 lbs. in the weeks leading up to surgery. Brace yourself now - the few days before surgery are 100% filled with reluctance to do it. I never came close to backing out but I thought it every moment. I have young kids and was worried. Had the surgery on 5/10. The week after was not bad, and since then I feel so happy. Even being relieved from a perceived dependence on my coffee, my wine, etc. is gone. I feel strong and powerful. So far have lost another 19 lbs and people are noticing that, but the biggest change for me has been to my mindset. All that said--do what your gut compels you to do. You can and should trust yourself. All the best either way!

    Waiting on Dating

Let's face it. We have been living to eat not eat to live. We are addicted to food in some way or to some degree or another. Anytime someone goes into addiction recovery (alcohol, drugs, gambling) they recommend to the person in recovery that they abstain from relationships for the first year. Addiction is addiction is addiction. Getting normalized in your daily life and stabilizing your weight is far more important than being in a relationship. I am not being judgemental here and I am sorry if that is the interpretation but that was not my intent. We are fighting for our lives. If I were a recoverying alcoholic and Thanksgiving and Christmas were nothing but drunken brawls interspersed with football games and gifts then I would go on a cruise! My quality of life is my utmost priority in my psycho-social behavior. My quality of life includes losing weight. It is absolutely my highest priority.

    MGB & Alcohol

OutsideMatchInside. Thanks for stopping by and replying. You are right with your answer. I wasn't nor I'm a alcohol " Addicted" When I said...I realized I can drink 2 beer or 2 wine easily...That I had after 1 year...and I am post 6 month surgery. I started occasional drink 2 weeks a go and I realized I can drink handsome amount. but yes....I was drinking with no effects. Thanks for motivation.
  15. Coops, you know I have had regain and in my case it is down to what I drink (it's not protein drinks!). Along with a drink we also seem to get out the crisps (chips) and the chocolate. So any evening where we share a bottle of wine we are consuming hundreds of calories and not one bit of goodness in any of them. Is it possible that uncounted calories are creeping in with alcohol or snacks that accompany it? I am trying by not drinking in the house and as we don't go out too much to the pub it has been cut down.

    MGB & Alcohol

Every person and every surgeon's plan is different. My Dr says you can drink in moderation after 3-6 months. I wasn't a drinker pre surgery so it hasn't been an issue for me post surgery either. Almost 8 months out and I have had zero alcohol. I think about a glass of wine here and there, but it's just not worth the calories to me.

    MGB & Alcohol

The rule, and in the manual, we are not to drink for the first two years. Alcohol can cause an ulcer in your smaller stomach so the risk is high. After two years, an occasional red wine is acceptable because the benefits outweigh the risk. BE VERY CAREFUL that one addiction - food - is not replaced with another. For me, it became shopping and I am still battling that one. It could easily have been alcohol, smoking, drugs, gambling, etc. Step back and analyze yourself. Counseling is not a bad thing. My best wishes for a happy and healthy future.
  18. It's me again. Neossa. I am 6 month post op MGB. After 3 month of my surgery I had small amount of alcohol and since then...I realized that I can drink decent amount of alcohol after my surgery. Before surgery I was drinking beer like a fish. After surgery I can even drink 2 beer at a time or 2 glass of wine. I am not drinking daily...but once a week. Over the weekend. I wonder my capacity of drinking after MGB. When I google stuff ppl says....they can't drink after surgery or they get high faster. But I don't feel like I am higher or tipsy. I KNOW its not good. and I am still half way to my weight loss journey. I need advise or a conversation for alcohol after Mini Gastric Bypass. Should I drink ( Off course NO) or I can occasionally drink 1 glass of alcohol. Thank you all in advance who can comment on it.

    Waiting on Dating

Many activities that revolve around dating revolve around eating food or drinking alcohol. Even a trip to watch a movie can incorporate popcorn and a large coke. I suspect with a fair degree of planning, some of the pitfalls between dating and gastric bypass surgery can be avoided. But that will take some planning on your part. The Weight Loss phase is fairly short. So if you want to maximize your weight loss during this Weight Loss phase, you need to adhere to the program guidelines. I slid into the Maintenance phase at 7 months.
  20. I was advised no more alcohol also. Primarily because continued drinking would promote ulcers for bypass patients, and it was a matter of "when" not "if". So I'm of the mindset it should be avoided just eliminate that possibility.

    Alcohol?

    Alcohol?

I don't drink often but when I do I just drink hard liquor on the rocks or with water. I have never been a beer or wine drinker really. I will have a few sips of wine with a meal if it compliments the meal. My alcohol tolerance is exactly the same. Insanely high. I couldn't get drunk if I tried.
  24. I'm pretty new here and I'm scheduled for surgery July 4th (EEK!) with Dr. Illian. I drink alcohol very rarely now...but I am a mother of an almost two year old, so occasionally a glass of wine or a nice cold beer really hits the spot. I was just curious on post-op how your body tolerates that? I know that wine may be a little easier on the belly, as long as it's not "bubbly". Just curious on what others experiences have been. Thank you for the info!
  25. I actually postponed my original date last October. But everything was booked and paid for. So me and hubby went and enjoyed ourselves. There was a lot of drinking involved. 😁 So if you are not a huge fan of alcohol, I say go for it!
