Tried caffeinated coffee and a 6 week update
katiemay0101 replied to MyTimeToLose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried everything! I mean everything because I was constipated (sorry for the TMI). Milk of magnesia, mirilax, colace, etc. I finally said the heck with it last night and had half of a small Dunkin donuts coffee. Best thing i could've done. This morning, after 10 days of not going, I finally was able to go. My doctor says no coffee but if it gets down to it again, I will drink the coffee! -
Tried caffeinated coffee and a 6 week update
MyTimeToLose posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I drank my first caffeinated coffee today (small, non fat, no whip Mocha) and well, after only drinking about 6-7 ounces, it acted like an enema! Sorry TMI. Anyone else experience this? I didn’t get any of the dumping syndrome feelings from it ( no aches, cramps, headache, sick all over, hot feelings), just had to go, one time and I am fine. Strange! I am definitely awake though, lol, so the caffeine really worked! I also found that it makes you not hungry since I forgot to eat lunch today after I drank it. Whoops. Not a good thing when I barely make 700 calories a day when I eat all my meals. So now I am down on Protein for the day, so I have to get a shake in too, yuck, lol. Not sure it was worth it, but I am happy I am awake. Just a warning for those who try it once they bring back a “normal” food diet….don’t plan to do it out in public in case you have to run, lol. On a good note, my weight stall is no longer and I am almost in the 230’s, only 1 more pound! So 29 pounds in 6 weeks (269 day of surgery) I am soooo excited. I saw some people I haven’t seen in over 3 months and they didn’t even recognize me! It was such a great feeling. One even said….wow you look sexy (in jeans and a tighter t-shirt). I haven’t thought of myself that way in a long time! -
BM questions-kind of embarrassed
DeeBrownBaker replied to TXBell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OMG... please know that it WILL change... but be careful that you're staying hydrated... but enjoy the go... because sometimes, I can't...unassisted... I know, TMI!! I am 7 wks out and things have truly changed... trying to find a balance at this point... -
Got home around 2pm, took a nap, started on protein shake. Tried some cream soup, just a couple sips. TMI: I really need to poop. Lol. Got some Miralax, but nothing yet. Sure wish I could get a good fart. Lol. At the hospital I walked and walked and walked. So much so, that other nurses knew my name. But still sad to say, no passing gas. Even though its not considered lady like, I would have done it and be proud, I'd declare, yep, that was me. I miss the hospital bed, it did all the sitting up for me. All the nurses were awesome and had great personalities. But I am so glad to be home, Anna didn't want picked up so I wouldn't feel bad. My UnJury shake was really good, especially with milk. My Isopure is more tolerable with a flavor stick. Just glad to be home again.

The dreaded BM talk
gowalking replied to cole&matt'smom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my first BM issue this morning. Felt very constipated even though I went a little yesterday. Was bloated and it was also causing issues when urinating...felt like i couldn't empty my bladder. Realized I was not drinking enough so more water today and also started on stool softener. Haven't gone yet, but passed gas several times since mid afternoon and that alone made me feel better. Will continue with the stool softener and water and hopefully that will do the trick. Sorry if this is TMI but I figured based on the topic, it would be OK to share...) -
Any March Sleevers?
mlecompte replied to futuresleever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How long is everyone taking off of work? How painful is recovery? I can be kind of a baby but I have had a c-section and 2 other births.. I also have 7 tattoos... And tmi but have had hemmriods cut off after having one of my babies... Just trying to think of painful things I have gone through... Oh I have also had a breast augmentation... Sooo wonder what the pain of this recover will compare to... Do you think it is realistic to go back to work 10days after surgery? I am a teacher... Which doesn't require a lot of activity just standing/walking a lot. -
anniearr yesss!!! that was me! lol looks like we're pretty much all going through the same pains... i still need help getting in and outta bed also.. my bed is very high off the ground so i borrowed one of my kids step thingies to help me get on and off my bed... the meds they prescribed me also put me to sleep but thats ok... i really want to chug down a cold glass of water or gatorade but i know... small and slow sips... i fill my mouth with cold cold water and then spit it back out (sorry tmi)

Immediately after surgery, I felt great! Never used the pain meds that were sent home with me! About 2 weeks after surgery I began having extreme pain in my lower left abdomen. My surgeon hospitalized me at my follow up visit to do a Catscan. They say the Catscan was normal and I, "probably pulled a muscle." I'm now 4 weeks out from surgery and am still in severe pain. It's not a constant pain, but the action of standing, sitting, laying down, sitting up, bending over (I try not to do this at all because its the worst), even squating (TMI warning) to use the potty is super painful. Has anyone else had this experience? If so, how long did the pain last?

Beautiful temp in southeastern Vic too! Didn't start drizzling until the evening - but we welcomed that. Dean, we'd have gladly taken some of the pi$$ing down off you, for sure! We need the rain soooooo badly, if not to dampen down fire prone areas, then at least to top up our Water tanks. That's all were on were on on the farm. Anyway, I didn't get a chance to post last weekend, and due to my living arrangements during the week didn't have access to a scale until yesterday. Today is weigh in day. So today starts week 3 of my self imposed pre-pre-op diet. I've been trying to have a couple of Protein shakes and a small meal consisting of a lean dense protein and a non-starchy veg (or 2) daily. It's been very hard this last week, and I have not made the best choices, hence I'm only down .2 kg from last weigh in, which bring me down a total of 1.7kgs since starting this 13 Jan(I think that's when I started). My surgeon is not going to be happy with me, but i am trying my best. Its hard - im hungry ALL THE TIME. And when not truly hungry, then i just want to bloody EAT. My own personal devil, Head Hunger. I see him on 30th. VSG still on for 18 Feb (had a bit of a win with personal finances....it had been looking like I might have to reschedule again, but not now. phew!). Official 2 week pre-op liquid diet will start 5 Feb. I wish I had that 2 weeks off from work as well, because I do better at home, in my controlled environment. Work stresses me out too much and I become preoccupied with food, eating, and it's just a danger zone for me. Away from work, I am FINE. But, I have to work, so am going to have to learn to manage this. There is no other way, and only I can do it. I have to change my response patterns, because work will not change. We had a late night last night and so my evening meal is uh, still "with me" (i usually weigh after doing all my business in the morning, if you know what i mean! Sorry....TMI!). I did really bad with my water intake this past week, some days only just got it all in, others lucky to get in half. Been working longer hours each day (10-12, as opposed to 8), 45 minute commute each way, and by the time I get home the last thing I want to do is exercise. Probably the exercise has been the worst - I did NONE this past week outside of body movement that takes place due to life and living! No intentional exercise,8 should say. I am still retaining some Fluid in my feet, ankles and lower calves but it is a lot better. So I will do my morning chores, see if things get moving. Things are a little slow in that department so I may have some.....build up to get rid of (again with the TMI!!) If they do get moving, re-weigh and see if it makes any difference. I'm sure it won't be much if at all, but hey. Product Reviews I've found a Protein shake that is fantastic on the calories to grams of protein ratio (a lot of WLS vloggers on YouTube say they look for things that are 1 gram of protein for every 10 calories, and less grams of carbs than protein). It's by Vitalstrength Nutriceuticals and it's called Define. Mine is the women's high protein mix; the label is black & pink with white text. I think there is a guys blend with a blue label. Anyway, I got it from Chemist Warehouse, it was on special $40 for 1kg tub. chocolate flavor, but they also have vanilla. It has 388kj/93 calories, 18.7 gr protein, 1.9 gr carbs, and 1.0 gr fibre (which makes the net carbs .9, I think?). I think that is a great ratio - more protein than kj/cal and low low carbs. It says to mix with low fat or soy milk but I do it with water. Its not the greatest taste in the world - doesn't really have much taste at all. So I added a little Stevia which helped but it just made it sweet. The texture still too watery (of course....I didn't use milk!). So I started looking for a way to improve the taste and texture, make it stay in my poor giant stretched out stomach a bit longer, which leads me to my next product...... Chobani Greek Yogurt. 2 version available: 2% fat and fat free. I went with fat free. Having had Greek yogurt in the past I'm used to it being very sour if taken plain, but this is brand is very mild (I think - I can actually eat it by itself, and I can't do that with other brands). It's slightly more expensive than other brands, BUT this has great label stats! Per 100 grams it's 241kj/58cal, 9.2 gr protein, 4.5 carbs (3.1 of which are sugars but I've read that these are not the same as say sugars found in fruit or cane sugar, something about the fermentation process changing them to not affect blood sugar the same? Will have to refresh my mind on that), and 108mg Calcium, which is so important and hard to get if you're minimizing dairy intake because of the carbs (I am). Anyway, it's got a really smooth creamy texture, reminds me of Paul's Chocolate Custard in the tub. So I mix about 1/2 cup of this yogurt into my morning and afternoon shake, and it REALLY helps. Much more satisfying because it stays with me a bit longer, and it sort of helps to bring out the choc flavor. Ok I have a food review that should suit sleevers who have been on solids for a little while - virtually sin free pizza. Its so good....even my husband, a pizza fiend thought it was awesome, and that is saying A LOT! He's usually a purist on things like pizza as in he likes a traditional base and nothing else will do. I got the recipe and instructions from one of the vloggers I watch regularly. Vsgtanya2011, post from 22 Jan 2013, titled Cheesy Garlic Cauliflower Pizza Crust. (sorry can't seem to post links from my iPad anymore...I think something's wrong with it!). You guys, this stuff is so good, the base is good enough to eat all by itself. And we did just that on the first one (made a double batch and then quartered it to make 4 different kinds of pizza (about the size of personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut). We only made 3 because the first one we ate as it was! Probably the only downside is the salt/sodium, because you use low fat mozzarella and Parmesan (both high-ish in sodium) and then it calls for garlic salt too. The first pizza I made up, I put a single layer of shaved hot Hungarian salami from the deli on it (that was 12 grams). Some sliced mushrooms, red and green capsicum, onion, a couple of sliced green olives (small ones) and some low fat mozzarella cheese, about 20gr of the shredded stuff. OMG, absolutely BRILLIANT. And you know what? I didn't realize until we were eating it that I forgot to put on the pizza sauce! And it tasted awesome! So score! No sugar from the sauce. The next one I did the same but added the sauce (brush it on with a pastry brush to minimize the sugar) and I think I actually prefer it without the sauce. The third on ei made BBQ chicken for my hubby. It was pretty good too. I had to adjust the cooking time of both the base and the pizza by about 3 minutes longer (difference in altitude I think) but I left the temp alone (she is American, as am I, but has an Aussie husband though - so uses Farenheit, so the conversion to Celsius is about 232 degrees). I found that the olive oil on the parchment didn't do anything but keep the base a little more moist, so wasn't a thin and crispy (my fav) except around the edges, but even so, it was still Devine. Honestly, I could quite easily never have a traditional based pizza ever again. Even my husband said he'd be happy to have this any time we had pizza at home. You guys do not know how big of a statement that is!!! I almost fell off the bar stool! Lol Also, I don't have a ricer, so after I cooked my cauliflower, I put it into a wire strainer and pressed the water out using a Cereal bowl that is slightly smaller than the strainer rim and then dumped it onto a stack of paper towels (I get rolls of the stuff from work for free, so have no qualms in "wasting it" (lol) so for those of you who don't use that stuff, a couple of old tea towels or even several layers of news print would work.....if you don't mind news ink! Lol) The cauliflower doesn't really stick to it and you just fold it over press out more water and then dump it into the mixing bowl. I think that's the most important part, get out as much excess water as possible. And this stuff is versatile, if you back off the cooking time you could avoid the crispy edges and use the stuff as a wrap, or cut it into squares for sandwich "bread", if you like savory stuff. I may do some experimenting with this see what other sort of flavors I can come up with that would suitable for less savory toppings/fillings. Ok, as usual I have ran off the end of the earth with a single post so hope everyone is doing great and having an awesome long weekend. Let's go out and make it happen!

how many calories should we be getting?
worm2872 replied to laurelle1980's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Salt it's a horrible thing. So's not pooing. I know tmi but both can cause me to gain two pounds overnight. -
Oh yeah! That was an NSV for me as well as my daughter hugging me with room to spare. I can also reach that itchy spot on back and this is TMI, but I think you will all understand - not being able to adequately wipe oneself. Now I can make by body do pretzel movements a Yogi would be proud of. I was also at a weight where rental horses would not carry me. My friend's Morgan mare I rode could carry me, but she's a tank. I didn't used to be able to mount without a mounting block, but now I can swing myself up on the tallest horse from the ground and I'm 5'1"! Then there is the fact that I can run up mountain trails - even at 10,000 ft. Plus, someone said, "How ya doin' Slim" to me yesterday. You folks have so much to look forward to and I'm happy for all of you to get this chance.

Ok I know it's TMI but I had to drink 10oz of magnesium citrate at noon today and I'm still in bathroom. How do you keep your poor too shoe from getting raw?!?!? I am hurting!

Some emotional turmoil after cosmetic/plastics consult
Catracks replied to CowgirlJane's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
If I got all this extra skin removed, I would be at goal - although I can only get the panniculectomy through my insurance. I just cannot afford anything else. If I made my goal, I'm wondering if I would be too thin. I've already noticed that the last 20 pounds left me with much more skin - especially on the thighs. This is TMI, but when I sit on the pot I really notice it all hanging over. I'm in great shape and would wear a size 4 or smaller without that apron. I've also been stalled for a couple months. I'm just wondering if this is where I should be. -

Magnesium Citrate?
makayla07 replied to ThinnerTiff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took it the day before surgery. Well it kicked in the morning of the surgery mixed with nerves for fours hours eww thank god my surgeon was running two hours behind. I was in the bathroom up until 1/2 an hour before they took me in. That would not have been good. How would I have gone in if I was still going. I know TMI. I only drank 1/2 the bottle. Imagine the whole bottle. My preop instructions which are so general said the whole bottle. When I double checked on my last visit he said oh no just drink 1/2. I mean that could have been a disaster. Stay home until you are all finished literally. Is this because you have not gone to the bathroom. They told me to take a stool softener and with in 12 hours I was fine. I just took one a day until I was kind of going on my own. Good luck -
Has any had to take this after surgery because their bowel movements were irregular??? I just went to the Dr he told me to drink 1/2 the bottle in the afternoon and 1/2 the bottle at supper..then take a tablespoon of miralax in the am and pm everyday!!! Does the mag. Make u go fast??? Sorry tmi

Was 5 pounds heavier yesterday. Today was 5 pounds lighter. Seriously, I'm about ready to do a colon cleanse if this keeps happening. It's the TOM or the Poo. Probably the poo. Massive blowout and bam! 5 pounds lighter. How is that even possible with the extra water and little bit of food? I'm about ready to set un an IV of Benefiber. TMI? Sorry. I just used to be so regular and then all of a sudden for no apparent reason, it decides to set up shop and invite squatters. -
I agree with Chez above that we do want the best for you. People's posts can be interpretted many ways in how you interpret ours and we interpret yours. Nonetheless, I think they are all well intended. Getting back to your original question.... unfortunately, or fortunately burping is very common. However, there are a few things you can do to help minimize it. If you use a straw for your beverages, you swallow a lot of air that way which can increase burping as can eating too fast. I recently was having a problem w/ gas (both ends, sorry tmi) and found out that from the weight I've lost already that my cpap (sleep apnea) machine needed to be turned down and that went away once it was. Also, as CG mentioned, sometimes those little burps/hiccups are a sign for many of us that we are full and to stop eating. Lastly, I am having a lot of tiny burps today and it's my band giving me issues today. Yesterday, at lunch, I had some chicken that was too dry and it caused me to have a bit of a stuck issue. Last night and today I am having a bit of the burps while my band/tummy settles down from being irritated yesterday. It's my sign it's still irritated and I need to keep it to liquids today. Best wishes to you... congrats on your success thus far.

female only question about period starting post-op while still in the hospital.
katikati posted a topic in The Gals' Room
Warning, there may be TMI ahead in this post. I assume since this is the lady's forum, it's okay just to be open. My body has the absolute worst timing. Here's the story. Growing up, my period was incredibly irregular. Like, from when I first started, I'd have a period once a year, but it would be a monstrous two-week long flooding ordeal. Now, that period also could be triggered by stress, and without fail, if I took a trip or something, there it would be, messing up all my clothes and the sheets and generally ruining my life. I evened out a bit as I got older, but it was still pretty rough, and not anywhere near regular. I lost about 120 pounds a few years ago, and during that time my period became regular and much, much lighter. Like... it actually became predictable and manageable! I was never excited to see it, but I knew I'd get through it, and in a couple of days, it would be gone. I have regained every pound of that weight I lost, maybe even more, but my period has stayed regular for some reason...until this month. Now I'm two weeks late, and I'm having my VSG in two more weeks. I read in my pre-op material, that the stress of surgery can bring on your period, and to pack accordingly. I'm curious, did anyone, regular menstruaters or not, actually experience your period starting right after surgery? I know you may mention or ask me a few things, so let me toss out a few more pieces of info to help. No, there's no chance I'm pregnant (unless it's immaculate). Yes, I'm sure I have PCOS, I have every single classic sign. I am, in fact also having a very large para-ovarian cyst removed at the same time as my VSG. It has been with me for years, so I don't think it's impacting this particular missed period. I have had some signs of an impending period, but it's like it just won't start. I got achy, some slight pain, I've been moody, tearful, alternating between sleepless and sleepy. It's like I've been morphing in and out of a fog of almost-PMS for a couple of weeks, but my body just can't quite get it started. It may be that I've just reached that point again in my weight, where my period was going to disappear and become crazy again. I know that was a lot of information. I also just seriously needed to vent because this is frustrating me. I hate walking around every day not knowing when it may strike. I'm suddenly appreciating a regular period for the gift that it was. Main question is this: Did any of you start your period in the hospital, and if you did, was it during your normal cycle, or brought on by surgery?
