sleeve in Mexico now $4200 or US $6000 but wait 6 months)
GradyCat replied to Panda333's topic in Insurance & Financing
You've read about the recent super-Bug virus problem in Mexico, right? What if there are complications? How will you get follow-up? I would wait the extra 3-6 months and spend the extra $1800 to have it in the USA for peace of mind. But that's just me. -
Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread
Orchids&Dragons replied to sideeye's topic in The Lounge
But this is the crazy part! I've seen 2 nutritionists - one employed by the hospital and the other affiliated with my surgeon. The one who works with my surgeon is comfortable with where I am and my long term goals, which do NOT include getting to my absolute skinniest weight and maybe wreaking havoc with my metabolism in the meantime. I'm almost 5'7" and my goal weight is 150. I included in that calculation the fact that I carry extra fluids from edema in my legs and probably 10 pounds of excess skin that I likely won't have removed. So, taking that into account my "adjusted" weight is around 135, as I see it. I think I'm quite thin right now and don't want to lose more. The NUT at the hospital, however, thinks wls patients should follow the strict, low-cal diet until they naturally "bottom-out" and then adjust from there. I don't want my body establishing 900 calories/day as my new normal. It seems like that would make every day from that point on a constant battle. I know this isn't the reality for everyone, and honestly, I probably (with this attitude) wouldn't be the weight I am now except for all my side-trips into complication-land. But, without the side-trips, if I had stalled out/hit maintenance at 160-170 lbs., I would have been perfectly happy. Just my 2 cents worth. -

I've pretty much decided I want to have the gastric sleeve. Now that that's settled I'm ready. I was already approved by Weight Loss Team in Mexico and It's $4200 including hotel stay in puerto vallarta. and I can schedule as soon as possible. I also found out my insurance covers it if I want to do it in the USA and my maximum out of pocket will be $6000 for the mayo clinic in Jacksonville, FL. The US one is $1800 more and they will make me go through the 3 to 6 months nutritional and dr. supervised, etc. I'm impatient, I don't want to wait the 6 months. I Also think the drs. in Mexico will do a better job because they do more procedures. On the other hand, if there are complications or follow up it will be nice to have the surgeons'/drs here in US. What would you do? -
🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇WELCOME🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇 First congratulations on the safe surgery and minimal complications I hope. As others have said use measurements , clothing and even photos to see visible changes aside from what the scale may say. You'll do great! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Meals are extremely enjoyable, event more so when life is enjoyable. Absolutely no regrets on my end. But each surgery carries risks of complications, some of which many of us never see but some people will. Research the type and surgeon extensively to become comfortable with the entire process. Good luck 🍀

Nights spent in the hospital after sleeve surgery?
Lindsay B replied to killerqueen86's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Was required to stay 3 nights, but since I live 3hrs flight time away from the hospital doing the surgery, and having one or 2 other health issues with potential issues and risk, I was kept for 4 days, then discharged into a close-by hotel, and finally given flight clearance to travel home. I feel sure that usually, where there are no complicating factors and where the surgery has also been uncomplicated, as it usually is, that 2 - 3 days discharge is commonplace. Good luck with it all!! -
Psych eval went great. It was def more of an eval that I expected it should be and from what I have read from everyone’s experience on here. I just had about 3 papers of 20 questions to fill out and then about an hour of face to face talk. She asked a little of everything all the way back from my childhood through high school and up. And of course why I want this and how I think it will work and the complications I might think could arise or the challenges... stuff like that. I asked at the end jokingly if I passed and she said yes but then she said it’s actually not up to her...🤷♀️ I asked if she meant the insurance but she said she said it ultimately goes to someone else that looks at everything but she really wasn’t sure who that was.... not sure if she was talking just about the psych part??? Does anyone know what she meant??

Changed mind about WLS?
AZhiker replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was scared right up to the pre-op room. I am a nurse, and I think knowing all the possible complications and CHOOSING to risk them in an elective surgery really messed with my mind. I thought over and over, "I should just do it on my own." But who am I fooling? After dieting for 5 decades? My PCP told me, "If you had been able to do it on your own, you would have." I was literally crying in pre-op. Then my surgeon came in and told me that none of his patients had ever come back wishing they had NOT had the surgery. Was he telling the truth? I don't know, but it was the reassurance I needed to go ahead. The first little bit is hard, for sure. And I had a complication of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that I am still taking a blood thinner for. But I feel like this is the best decisions I have ever made for myself. After 48 pounds off, I can walk up hills and stairs without being winded. I have so much more energy and I think the very best years of my life are still ahead! Bottom line - some fear and ambivalence can be perfectly normal - just means you are weighing the risks seriously. However, life is so much better on this side of the surgery, and you can never know until you take the plunge! -
Losing Insurance Used For Sleeve
freidaboat replied to freidaboat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know my current uhc does not have bariatric coverage which is why I did not initially use the insurance to get the sleeve but I’m wondering more about any complications that may come about in the future -
Preparing for surgery, very scared. Tips??
Tejee replied to SargentSkittles's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Dont be scared! Everyone deals with it differently... I was a very slow healer...still healing at 8 weeks now...but very happy with no complications. I'm 25 and knew that now would be the time to turn my life around. You just have to stay motivated and know that this is for the better. You can do this! Losing Insurance Used For Sleeve
freidaboat posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone has input on my situation or has gone through the same thing? I am 7 weeks out. I was sleeved under my Blueshield insurance (I technically have double coverage with Blueshield and UHC). I will be losing my Blueshield insurance at the end of April and I'm afraid if some kind of complication occurs after that my UHC insurance won't cover. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this? Thanks in advance! -
Changed mind about WLS?
Diana_in_Philly replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, not to be snarky, but how has losing weight without surgery been working for you so far in life? I'm assuming, since you are considering surgery, your BMI is over 35. You don't have any stats, so we don't know age, weight, etc. My guess is if you are considering surgery, dieting has not worked over the years for you. I was 56 when I had surgery in 2016. I have lost about 150 pounds. I am in the best physical shape I've been in during my lifetime except when I was a nationally ranked athlete in my teens. And at age 57, I'm in the top 25 in women in my sport in the the US. The surgery works. Yes, there is always the chance of complications. But what are the complications you are facing now - high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, inability to move freely, inability to buy clothes, etc. 99% of making this surgery work is getting your head in the right place. Sounds like you need to spend some time working through that. -
My lap band revision to RNY is Friday the 29th of March. I just got approved yesterday and they are rushing me through because my insurance switches at the end of the month. So my head is spinning with excitement. I have had the band since 9/06. Tried to get a revision in 2016 when I had all kinds of complications but insurance wouldn’t approve it and the thought of gaining my weight back was a worse feeling. Fast forward to 2018, tried again and UHC denied me again. Moved to Kansas and got Aetna insurance and they approved me!! My surgeon knows my history and he is allowing me to bypass some of the stuff as I have been restricted for 13 years so it’s not completely new to me. I have had a slipped band for over a year gained about 45 pounds of my 136 pounds loss. Ready to get rid of the band pain. I hope I am making the right decision. It’s happening really fast. Starting weight before band in 2006 was 335, lowest weight in 2016 was 155 and my current weight is 195. Could use support if anyone out the has had revision. Thanks and good luck to all the Marchers out there.

Any good gastric sleeve surgeon in Mexico?
Julie.vsg replied to seba21's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I went to Pompeii Surgical with Dr. Quinonez and I had a very pleasant experience. No complications, minimal bruising and the medical care was superb. -
Pre surgery jitters can make you question your surgery. It’s normal. First months is your best weight loss. Your first year is your golden year. don’t waste it! What will make you successful long term is nothing magic. It’s following your plan. weigh and log your food, hydrate and activity/exercise. Rates of weight loss: Just because one person did not lose much and another lost above the norm does not mean that is what your outcome will be. Don’t compare your weight loss. It will make you crazy. Things to learn from the posts about regain. Weight gain can happen with any type of procedure. “eating around your surgery restriction” You can eat several small meals that total over your weight loss/maintaining calories. (can be combinations of healthy and unhealthy foods) The result is weight gain Some examples of what can trigger people to eat over their weight loss/maintaining calories Complications Head hunger/real hunger medical issues medications stress/emotions menopause pregnancy eating disorders Being complaisant Thinking restriction alone will take and keep the weight off

Nicotine (continine)metabolite blood test
Fazzini Bee posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeons office called me to let me know that they are going to submit my paperwork for insurance approval. They told me that my insurance might request a nicotine blood test because I am a former smoker. Well , in two days I got the call to let me know that I was approved by my insurance. I assumed at this point that I didn't need to have the blood test done. I was told I'd be called in two weeks by the surgery scheduler. Fast forward 3-4 weeks, no call. Nothing. No news, nothing. I call the surgeons office and am informed that I need to take the nicotine test to schedule surgery. 😠😠😠 Not a huge deal because I will pass the test- I occasion vape 0 nicotine just for the social aspect of it. But what a waste of my dang time! I paid all of my surgeons fees and my deductible in full. How long would they have made me wait?? I keep considering switching surgeons because this office literally makes no contact with patients. And it bother me really, really badly. I don't have any crazy expectations, just reach out if there's a problem. I almost feel blind in this whole process. I am so frustrated. I have a very complicated situation at work and need the surgery in May or June. And I am right in that window of scheduling. Please pray for my patience. -
Surgery Day Tomorrow Mar 27th
Avery's Mom replied to Trellunit's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good luck! Mine was very quick and easy, I had no complications. I slept pretty much the whole day. SIP the water. -
First, the obligatory disclaimer: remember that everyone is different and will have different weight loss rates. Age, starting weight, genetics, height, complications all factor in to each person's weight loss rates. Second, a thought: Instead of just total units lost, probably a more telling statistic would be maybe BMI (which factors in height), or Percentage of Total Body Weight Lost (but this doesn't take into account lean muscle changes...), or Percentage of Inches Lost in certain areas of body measurements (but everyone carries their weight differently...) Lastly: Anyhoo, with that said, we are human after all, and we can't help but compare and be curious: ** Note that I am on the vertically-challenged side of 5' 1" ** Highest weight: 235.0 lbs (10-Oct-2018) BMI: 44.4 (morbidly obese) Surgery weight: 223.2 lbs (24-Oct-2018) Today's weight: 148.8 lbs (26-Mar-2019, 5 months + 2 days post op) BMI: 28.1 (overweight) % of Body Weight Lost: 36.7% (-86.2 lbs) % of inches lost chest: 25.0% (-12.0") % of inches lost waist: 28.7% (-12.5") % of inches lost hips: 22.2% (-11.0") ** Yes, I keep track of EVERYTHING. You should see my spreadsheet **

i know i literally just posted a "yup. i regret this." thread about 3 weeks ago - but it was more out of frustration over the complications i had. i am anxious to lose another 60lbs. i hope i get there. i could be the most impatient person in this entire forum, lol. now that things seem to be normalizing as far as not having stupid issues, i don't feel so bad about it. i am glad i've lost what i have so far. i didn't have any support either. and when i was going through the complications, my mother was like "i told you so". i picked gastric bypass because i wanted the absorption and dumping; i wanted the negative reinforcements to eat correctly. and also i had acid reflux and sleeve makes that worse, usually. i know several people who had the surgery who regained the weight because they could somehow eat whatever they wanted without consequence. fortunately that doesn't happen to me (yet). if you don't ever put that food in your mouth after surgery, you'll never know if it will make you sick or not, so it's best not to even try. my boss has regained 40lbs and eats mounds of mac n cheese and pizza and donuts, etc. he had surgery 6 years ago. my coworker's daughter-in-law can eat whatever she wants and regained her entire weight lost (100lbs). it's just a tool, not a cure. but i firmly believe if you don't test your limits, you won't have an issue. why risk it.

What, you had NO surgery complications?
Frustr8 replied to Healthy_life2's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well, I had absolutely no surgery complications at 72, no gas, no tummy pain, really felt on top of the world, as the 60-70s song goes, my slide downhill wasn't until after 2 weeks later, when my stricture reared its nasty little self and no one believed me. They had the licenses and degrees, but I had been living in this body a long long time. Trust me, sometimes you have to be the squeaky wheel, advocate for yourself, without wheel grease you will lock up and freeze in place. Really would have preferred them to be right, but I was correct. Still riding the "tornado's tail "but will be resolved and all better soon. And through all the bumps, hairpin curves and foggy doldrums, I would NEVER EVER RETURN to the way I was sans my surgery. It is and was a miracle in my life , now weigh over 130 pounds+ less my highest weight, 75+ since my surgery, even with all the twists and interventions, don't know where I would be with a blameless recovery, but you know what, this still is my own trek, I'm a fighter, I will make it to goal and victory! I do respect the new woman. I am becoming for I know all I have encountered along the way ! And no previous diet ever did what my surgery did for me, a better future to come!🌈😜👍 -
What, you had NO surgery complications?

4mo since VSG, 68yo, 23hrs in hospital. No pain, no complications. I was able to drink fluids and protein shakes with no problems. Best decision of my life. -
Surgery is a huge decision and everyone has a right to their feelings about it which can run the whole gamut in a day or a week from elation to doubt and back. If you are nervous get off the web and talk to your surgeon and their team. As with any medical procedure there are people who have complications, or don’t respond well, but there are countless others who haven’t had complications. If you decide to go through with it there will be changes but all for the better. I don’t think of the surgery as an elective but as preventative and an intervention. I have been through stalls and a little bit of hair thinning but nothing catastrophic. The first two months were hard but at 8 months I barely remember it. Post-Op You will learn to listen to your body more, really learn when your full, and feel better after moving around. Listen, if you had told me a week pre-op that at 71/2 months I’d be down 90lbs and have run my first 5K I would have laughed myself into the ER. Change is scary but doing nothing is detrimental. We’ve all done the yo yo diet, workout, lose and gain it all back plus some. I hope you choose to go through with it! I hope you’ll find some peace and support with your decision. If any of you are lacking support and want to chat please feel free to reach out. Good luck!

Shoelace replied to Healthy_life2's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm 4 months post op with no complications and no regrets. Best decision I ever made and I only look forward now. The first few days were rough but they are after most surgeries. Other than being tired, I could have gone back to work in week 2 I think..didn't but could have. Losing nicely. Not fast but that's just fine and so far no real excess hair loss. Absolutely no buyers remorse here! -

Yeah I agree I can't understand people being so nervous. I cannot wait I'm so excited for my surgery to begin. I've been thinking about it for a while and I'm super happy because the alternative is dying of heart attack and dying early. Just like one been watching the one ton family and this guy 700lbs is getting all worked up about possible complications but dude you're going to die very soon if you don't get help!!! Surgery has been done 1000s of times and the rate of complications is very very small seriously... And yes as above we only hear about complications people don't talk much about good things even in the paper or the news is always bad stuff talked about.. My doctor said no problems don't stress we've been doing this for 20 years!! Think about the future. Think about a life without health risks. Think about looking and feeling like a new person. Think about living a long healthy life!
