Eating too much 6 days post op RNY
BabySpoons replied to lolyschmoney's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not being able to feel restriction is usually pretty common till you get past the soft food stage. I remember thinking the surgery didn't work for me either, till I started eating regular food at 5 weeks. It was then I really felt the I'm full pain. I have since learned when to stop before it gets to that point. Liquids and soft phase were pretty easy for me. I still go back to it sometimes when my tummy is not feeling so good. Just be careful that you don't eat more than you should. Especially this early out. You don't want to pop a staple or blow out your stomach. Extremely dangerous. Nerves have been cut too during your WLS and can contribute to why you aren't feeling that restriction. Give them time to heal. At this point you want to go by how much your Dr recommends eating because you can't trust that not feeling restriction phase. I could always eat more than 2 TB of food but never allowed myself over 1/2 C early on. Also wait 30 minutes to an hour after eating to drink. If I don't, liquids won't stay down. I would concentrate right now more so on getting all your liquids in. Good luck!! Here's what my nutritionist recommends: 5 weeks to 6 months: 600-800 calories, 65-100 g protein, less than 45 g carbs, less than 30 grams fat. 6 months to 12 months: 800-1000 calories, 65-100 g protein, less than 60 g carbs, less than 35 grams fat. Over 12 months: 1000-1500 calories, 65-100 g protein, less than 75 g carbs, less than 30-60 grams fat. -

Congratulations on your surgery and doing so well. In Europe we seem to be given a little less rules and strict regulations than our forum friends based in the USA. Your team do seem to have the most laid back approach that I have come across. I had 4 -6 weeks of baby type foods until my stomach was healed and went on to normal foods. 1. Ask your team because everyone has a surgeon with a different idea of what a pre op or post op diet should be. 2. I had a wicked restriction so only managed 300 calories for the early months. 1200 - 1500cals a day is where I am now. It doesn't really help you because your team may want you on much more. 3. Many foods are slider foods. Cake, biscuits, crackers, chocolate etc. You will not feel any restriction eating these. They just slide on through. 4. At about 6 to 12 weeks, your real restriction will kick in. It happens when your stomach has healed and your nerves begin to knit together again. Hydration is a different matter all together, if you can eat so many calories ? why can you not drink enough?? It just does not make any sense. We are told to drink up to an hour before meals and wait one hour after to drink again. In the early stages drinking is a 24 hour occupation, it is tough. Take little sips at every opportunity, day and night. Try hot, cold and frozen drinks. I was allowed coffee, so had lattes. Great protein. -

Oh wow!!!! Im SO jealous of what you get to have Vicky!! I wish my surgeon would allow all that!! 😩 I can have the blended 0 fat cottage cheese.. Broth, decaf coffee or decaf tea. Unsweetened apple sauce, ocean spray diet juice, skim milk, almond milk, Greek or skyr yogurt. Meal replacement shakes(premiere shakes) And a few other liquids. But no matter what I have.. It has to be a liquid. No more then 800 calories per day. 60 to 80 g of protein a day. So.. Tomorrow I will start... For 13 days... Then 1 day of only clear liquids... Then August 14th is my surgery day. -
Curious About Post-Op Days

It's so different for everyone. For me, I had minimal pain, but was tired ALL THE TIME. I definitely got tired of liquids and protein drinks. I struggled with that part. I didn't want to cook either because I couldn't eat it. So if you have a family to take care of, maybe make some freezer meals ahead of time. Weeks 3 and beyond weren't bad. The puree stage was tolerable. I made things I liked and just pureed them, so it wasn't awful. To be honest, the first 6 weeks can be a challenge, but it's totally worth it. Keep with your program and continue to read posts on here to get an idea of what to expect. But keep in mind, for every bad experience, there are at least 20 good experiences. I am looking forward to hearing more about your journey! -

My doctor allows 3 shakes a day. We can either have 3 as meal replacement or use 2 as meal replacement and 1 considered a snack. We are allowed 1cp coffee or un sweet tea but I don't like either. All the sugarless jello and low fat cottage cheese We want. He also allows what he calls 1 Lean and green meal a day. 3 oz protein (chicken, turkey, unbreaded fish) and 3 cups greens (green beans, spinach, broccoli, cucumbers) a day instead dof 1 shake. The day before surgery is nothing but clear liquids though. Not even protein shakes. -
I used Isopure unflavored protein powder. Found it on Amazon and Target. I don’t notice a smell or taste at all. Congrats on your surgery & Good luck on finding what works best for you! 🤗

I'm on day 2. Thankfully my surgeon allows unlimited sugar free jello and Popsicles, cottage cheese, broth. Then 1 time day 3 oz of protein and up to 3 cups of green. (Spinach, broccoli, lettuce, cucumbers,) last day it's strictly clear liquids.

Unflavored protein powder
sleevedinthe817 replied to MsTeeTee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There is an unflavored protein powder that I found after following a keto influencer on Instagram. She has her own brand of keto-friendly protein and electrolytes found here. https://myadventuretofit.com/products/wheyproteinunflavoredunsweetened I didn’t taste anything weird when I had it in my broth. -
Right Quadrant Pain/Discomfort, Post-op Injections, & Hives
Midwest Grateful posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Day 4 post-op. I'm more sore than expected, especially from my upper right quadrant (abdomen). I did have a liver biopsy so I wonder if that is adding to it. I had the gastric bypass. I also have HORRIBLE hives on abdomen because I'm allergic to the scrub, benzoin...you name it. That alone is miserable. I gained 9 lbs (nine!) immediately after surgery. I'm sure it's from all the IV fluids. But I've lost most of that. Also, I am required to give myself injections in my belly for 2 weeks to decrease the risk of blood clots. Continuing another 2 weeks of clear liquid diet w/protein drinks; I'm ready to advance this diet, that's for sure. All in all, I'm glad I did this and the surgery is behind me. Anyone else experience right upper quadrant pain or discomfort? How long did it last? -
I buy this in bulk at Walmart but you can buy a smaller amount to try. I never have mixed it in with food. Doesn't sound appealing to me. I enjoy it because I can vary the flavors of my drinks and never get bored with it. I'm in food phase now but I still drink one every day to help ensure I get my protein in for the day. I mix it with Peanut butter powder, cocoa, stevia or various crystal light packets, SF flavored yogurts, skim milk and ice. I tried unflavored protein powder in the hospital. Made my broth taste and smell like dog food. Lord forgive me. Lol I just couldn’t. It was the nestle brand. Beneprotein. Any suggestions for a better unflavored protein?

Peanut butter during 14 day liquid diet
MsTeeTee replied to MsTeeTee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Due to my glucose being unstable I was told by my doctor to drink water diluted protein shakes during my liquid phase. I am a type 2 diabetic and my glucose was doing a roller coaster for two days. 110 to 70 to 40 and under in less than 30 minutes. I definitely like your recipe but I’m not allowed to have any blended drinks with added stuff like fruits. No smoothies. Just protein shakes. but thanks for the recipe! I will definitely ask if I can do it later on in another phase. -
Peanut butter during 14 day liquid diet
summerseeker replied to MsTeeTee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgeon did not agree with protein shakes and had me on skimmed milk. Pre and post surgery. I put unsweetened peanut butter in my blender with half a banana and milk as a milk shake. BTW, UK milkshakes come with out ice cream and whipped cream. Loads of protein, inexpensive and delicious. -
Curious About Post-Op Days

The first two weeks I was achy, gassy, and slow moving. The binder helped a lot. I set a timer and sipped liquids slowly from small 1oz cups. The liquid goals seemed impossible to reach at first. I walked as much as I could several times a day albeit very slowly. Lived in fear of constipation but miralax daily helped as did a 1oz swig of prune juice. As I drifted off to sleep I would think of the non liquid foods I would have eventually like fish, meats, and eggs in a dreamy over the rainbow way which is humorous now as now much later I much prefer plant based proteins. Good luck take it one day at a day and be gentle with yourself. -
Good Morning! I'm new here. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on July 26. I'm having pains mostly on my right side, but nothing I can't push through. Still have occasional pain in my left shoulder but I think its getting better. I'm waking a total of 30 minutes a day, but broken up. I'm doing well getting my water down but the protein shakes are hard. I'm ready for total healing to be complete. Thank you for letting me share.

I used powdered peanut butter, too (mixed it into things like chocolate protein shakes). PB2 and/or PBFit - in fact, I still have some and use it occasionally. -

Been having terrible time with the app, so sorry that my comment is so late. I didn't see any of these posts for a long time. I like Fage yogurt. It has 20g protein. -
Are you on a PPI (like esomeprazole)? Stomach acid can make you think you’re hungry with hunger pangs. Stomach acid is often greater at night because of the fasting period when there isn’t any food in your tummy so the acid isn’t being used to breakdown it down. Also a growling tummy in most instances don’t indicate you are hungry (like we were always told) - it’s just our digestive system working. The hunger could actually still be head hunger. Our heads are a very powerful organ & can really mess with us. Your hunger could be caused by your emotions. The surgery & change of diet is stressful & the hormonal flush can make you emotional. For many of us we used to turn to food in stressful/emotional situations to sooth & comfort us. At the moment you can’t do that but your head is still telling you to eat. Also you can be simply wanting/craving what you can’t have. Subconsciously, you can also be questioning how such a little serving of food can actually be enough to satisfy you. All your head messing with you. I discovered my real hunger feels very different than the ‘hunger’ I used to know. I get restless, think something is wrong but aren’t sure what at first. There is always a reason I am hungry (missed a meal, delayed eating, didn’t eat enough for the day, etc.). I never crave or want to eat a specific food, flavour or texture… except I find I only want something high in protein. Distraction can be helpful. Read, go for a walk, undertake a hobby like gardening, drawing or crafting, play some games board or online, ring a friend or family member, clean out a drawer or cupboard, check social media, etc. Sometimes a warm drink can help.

Low Vitamin D, High PTH, & Bone Loss after BPD/DS
Arabesque replied to B Mack's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I’m sorry you’ve developed theses complications. It’s so unpredictable how our bodies work & react to the changes to our digestive system post surgery. I was fine after my sleeve but jump to 25 months later & my gall was removed & suddenly I had a protein absorption issue. I also stopped absorbing my HRT meds. Malabsorption after gall surgery can occur but I was told it’s quite rare for it to be with protein. I wonder if some of the treatments women use for osteoporosis would help? Not HRT of course but prolia & evenity. 🤷🏻♀️ Worth asking your doctor. There must be research & treatment plans about because osteoporosis in men is increasing. PS - I use a mouth spray for my D3 K2 (I take it winter when my levels drop) though it is only a low dose (1000UI) but someone might produce a higher dose to boost your intake. The spray means your digestive system is bypassed & it is absorbed directly. Sorry just read you can’t take vitamin K. -
Did I eat too much?

Ask your team to recommend a dietician/nutritionalist @PennyinAL especially one with some experience with supporting wls patients. My surgeon recommended mine. And don’t be afraid to ask for as much guidance & information as you think you need to keep you on track. Also be very honest with them. They can’t offer you the best advice & information if they only know part of the story. I was only given protein & water goals & portion size recommendations from my surgeon, wasn’t even advised to track my food but I was ok with that (though I did randomly check my calories for my own information). I’m someone who does a lot of their own research so I think my dietician was confident in what I was doing & also by the questions I asked her. Dieticians/nutritionalist can sometimes fall into a one size fits all advice cycle. Ask for alternative food suggestions & other options if the plan or their advice doesn’t fit your food preferences, eating style, food sensitivities, post surgery food intolerances (when your taste buds temporarily change making certain foods disgusting), activity levels & lifestyle. -

Peanut butter during 14 day liquid diet
sleevedinthe817 replied to MsTeeTee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I ended up buying a big tub of PB2 powder from Costco and I mix it into my protein shakes. I’ve also added it to my yogurt and cream of wheat. Sometimes I’ll use regular peanut butter, but it isn’t the super thick kind. It’s the Kirkland brand that is a little thinner and I haven’t had any issues. -
Oh, I have met with my dietician. She recommended a cookbook that has some full liquid recipes, a couple of which include powdered peanut butter, so I was excited to find that at the DT - I know it’s expensive. My dietician was also excited to know I really like fish because she said that’s usually well tolerated, so I stocked up on salmon packets. I didn’t read the labels for the water or the protein shake because I don’t like sweet drinks NOW so don’t anticipate drinking them after either, but noted them there.

Did I eat too much?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to pamelacoa@yahoo.com's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Every plan is different. My first 2 months, I'm not to go over 400 calories. From 2 months to 4 months, I can go up to 500 calories. 4 months to 6 months, I can go up to 600 calories. And from 6 months on I can go up to 900 on days I'm not working out and 1100 calories on days that I do. My protein stays between 70-100, my net carbs always stay 30 or under, my sugar stays at 10 or less, and my fats are always between 35-45. I avoid all carbonated drinks (it stretches out the pouch, and upsets my stomach), I stay away from coffee but if I really need caffeine, I drink a glass of green tea in the morning (or black tea if I'm out of green). This is daily, not per meal. It's just how I've done it since my original surgery and I feel my best. And while my nutritionist would like me to eat a little more carbs, she approves of my eating habits because I'm healthy and my blood work always comes back great. Just talk with your nutritionist, follow whatever plan they have for you, exercise and move your body, and you'll do great. -
Curious About Post-Op Days
WaistAweigh replied to FlowerGirl44's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First few days post op bypass were ROUGH for me. I had post op depression, I was in pain, my potassium dipped so low I was symptomatic and thought I was dying. Spent from 2pm -4am in two different ERs that day. I would cry in my kitchen because of regret and guilt with having the surgery. I didnt know how I was supposed to get my fluids in and protein AND focus on healing. I was feeling very, very down. I started taking things moment by moment. I advocated for myself about the low potassium and low heart rate i was experiencing. I bought a 64oz water bottle and made sure it was finished by the end of the day. I got a pill organizer and organized all my meds and vitamins so that I didnt feel like poop. I started walking around my house to ease the pain since it was so darn hot outside. I told myself that my body had just been though A LOT of trauma and that I have to treat it with love. I have a tattoo on my arm that says, “this too shall pass” and I reminded myself of that every day. I reminded myself of what a beautifully raw process getting WLS is. I made sure to seek support and help when I needed it most. You WILL feel like crap after surgery, thats a given, but IT WONT LAST. Just remember that even in your darkest moments. You got this.
