    Gastric Sleeve in Mexico

My surgery date is 12/2 with Dr. Perez with Renew Bariatrics. I'm on their FB group. Seems like FB is the place to go for a lot of these groups.
  2. I am glad you have an appointment. Only you will know if the surgery is best for you and that seems like a great place to explore your feelings. Also, even if you decide not to do the surgery and to do it through diet and exercise, working on any disordered eating you maY have (if you do have any) will help you with that too. The bariatric therapist and nutritionist are two key components along with surgery for success so I’m sure they will be very helpful if you choose to do it on your own as well. And if you choose to have the surgery in the future you will be ahead of the game.
  3. Well, I didn't cancel quite as dramatically as you did. In 2013, I started down the path, doing pre-op visits, etc. At the same time, I started Tim Ferriss's slow carb diet. I did great, had a ton of weight coming off. I realize now that his plan re-inforced my binge eating habits in a way that made it impossible for me to maintain once I went off the diet. But at the time, I had this confidence that I could do anything. The nutritionist asked me what I was doing to lose weight and I explained the diet. She told me that I needed to realize that once I had the surgery I couldn't eat like that any more. Now that I am post-surgery, I see that she was absolutely right. But at the time, it offended me. I was losing weight like crazy (ended up losing 150 pounds in 13 months) and she had the audacity to tell me that I couldn't keep doing it? I cancelled the rest of my appointments. It was another 8 years before I re-started the process and went through with the surgery in August 2021. Before my actual surgery, I had a lot of the same fears you did. RNY is a pretty freaking permanent and I had no clue what awaited on the other side of surgery. Laying alone on the gurney during pre-op, not knowing what life would hold when I awoke...that was tough. I had always seen VSG/RNY as my last resort. What I realized was that I had come to my last resort. The next diet was very likely to turn out like all of the others: works for a little while, but the weight comes back. I didn't want to do that to my body (and mind) any more. I have a wife and four kids and they deserved to have me around for a while longer. So I went through with it not because I had confidence that everything would be roses and rainbows on the other side, but because it was the best (and probably only) option for me to turn around my health. Bariatric surgery is a bet on yourself. It's a bet that you have more discipline than you realize (or that your body shape shows) and that if given a real opportunity, you can turn this around permanently. Are you ready to bet on yourself?
  4. Do you feel like this is something that you still want to do? If so, maybe a bariatric therapist can help with the anxiety. They should have statistics on how often (how infrequent) these things happen that you are afraid of. They can also tell you the statistics of things that happen because of obesity without surgery. Plus if they are prescribing dr maybe they can give you something that you can take the night before and morning of surgery to calm you down. Of course you have to make sure the surgeon is okay with you taking it but my guess is that they will take your anxiety more seriously now.
  5. I just finished my second Bariatric Support group and my Psych evaluation this morning! I have my last pre-op support group this evening at 5:30. After that, I have my surgical consultation on the 3oth of this month, then a PCP appointment to get the letter of necessity on December 14th, and then the nutritionist appointment on January 4th!

  6. My wife uses a tiny spoon made for bariatric patients, they come in a set on Amazon - Mindful Eating Portion Control Flatware - for weight loss bariatric diet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B1JRZYV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_GA1ABFHC2W238H3MTQ22?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. I would not recommend a sippy cup, it will cause you to swallow gas and cause awful cramps. We have found using a regular water bottle and just taking tiny sips is the way to go.
  7. I looked up bariatric advantage , it's a bit expensive but looks really good. I am tight on money right now , but good to know what works.
  8. Have you tried the chewables that are not gummies. Bariatric advantage makes a good one. I switched to capsule cause it’s cheaper but they did not upset my stomach at all and Your nutritionist or clinic may have samples. My nutritionist game me samples of the multivitamin and the vitamin C chews which are quite tasty (like candy).

    Lap band expiry date

Originally, LapBands were marketed as permanent and life-long. They are a medical grade device so they don't have an expiration date and do not require removal after a certain period of time. That being said, as the years have gone on, long term complication rates continue to go up, and there is documented research that indicates that they can degrade over time, usually starting around the 10 year mark. That is limited though, and varies widely. As such, many LapBand patients have opted to have them removed and move on to VSG or RNY as a permanent weight loss solution. If you are no longer happy with it, not using it, and/or having complications, definitely get in touch with a bariatric surgeon in your area and see what options you have for getting it removed.

    Post op day 2

Thank you for your feedback. I have some flavorless isopure that I’m experimenting with today. In hindsight, I REALLY should have done the experimenting PRIOR to surgery, but here we are. I’ve broken it down to protein per gram of the isopure, which is about 0.86 protein/g. Which is about 1/2 teaspoon. For my first experiment I mixed 1 tsp spoon with a quarter cup of milk and a little coffee. I knew I wouldn’t drinking the whole thing, but it was good! Soooo baby steps. I still haven’t t figured out how much I’m physically able to drink in a certain time period, say thirty minutes. I will get there. My second experiment is about 2 oz sugar free pudding and 2 tsp spoon of isopure. I can taste it but I’m trying to just power through. Through a recommendation from a friend/coworker who has had the sleeve as well, I will be trying Ensure Max protein chocolate variety later in the day. i am currently WAY behind with my water, but it’s Monday morning and life is happening. I will do my best to make up for this later. I gotta pick my battles at the moment. My next priority will be finding a proper multi vitamin, preferably one can effortlessly swallow, because the bariatric advantage one is huge and gross. this reply of thanks has turned into an update. Sorry! I’m sorta using this thread as a personal log.

    Sandwiches and chips

There are many bariatric cookbooks available on Amazon and elsewhere. These are some of the ones I've gotten:

    Strange Stomach Noises with Pain

Sounds more bowel related & a colonoscopy may be warranted. Bariatric surgeons tend to specialise in the gastrointestinal area. From what you describe a colorectal surgeon may be more appropriate. Have you spoken with your GP?

    Back To The Basics

I’m with the give them a miss until you’re at or close to your goal team. Sticking to your plan will help you take the most advantage of your surgery. When you get closer to goal you may start to look for healthy substitutes for your traditional choices. Try air fried or oven baked not deep fried. Try vegetable based pastas (you can eat zucchini noodles & cauliflower rice from solid foods). There are keto friendly low carb high protein breads you could try later on. If your desire to eat these ‘non bariatric friendly foods’ is driven by emotions, finding a good therapist may be helpful. Recognising the causes of your emotional eating, finding ways to manage them better & identifying other means of coping with your emotional needs than eating, etc. will only help you be more successful with your weight loss & maintenance. A benefit of avoiding those foods while you’re losing is by goal you may actually reduce or lose some of your desire for pizza, pasta, & the other foods you currently want & depend on. Which will make it much easier if you chose to have the odd slice of bread or pizza, etc. now & again in the future. Personally, I don’t eat pasta (only fresh zucchini noodles), rice or bread & avoid sweet things & fried foods. They were all things I ate regularly & enjoyed but I don’t really miss them at all now. I was able to break my need for them & I was eating them for a lot longer than you’ve been alive 😉. It can be done. Exercise will only contribute to you losing a maximum of 20% of the weight you have to lose. Of course it has lots of other benefits so I’m certainly not saying exercise is a waste of time but don’t rely on it to loose your weight. But it’s really up to you & you discovering what works best for you. Good luck.

    Back To The Basics

Yes...but here's the catch: you have to eat "bariatric-friendly" versions of your favorite junk foods. Think cauliflower pizza crust with low-sugar sauce and turkey pepperoni, donuts and cookies made with almond flour and monk fruit sweetener, Mac and cheese made with macaroni from the Great Low Carb Bread Co. and low-fat cheese sauce, sugar-free cool whip on a crustless sugar-free pumpkin pie slice, etc. The good news is there's a surprisingly large number of already-made foods available such as "Oreos" made by Catalina Crunch, "potato chips" made by Quest or Kay's, etc. If you do your homework, you don't ever have to eat anything bad for you ever again. Good luck! You'll do great.

    Bad eating habits

The first thing to do is ask yourself, what are my triggers? Then work to resolve them. What makes you get off of your plan? Find out what your triggers are, then resolve to get back to your plan. If it's cravings that are driving you mad, try and find bariatric friendly versions of your favorite junk foods. Just make sure to measure out your portions. There's nearly a bariatric friendly version of just about any food these days, many of which taste just as good as "the real thing." Good luck! You've got this! ❤️
  16. Hi everyone! I just wanted to say if anyone is need of recipes, I'm full of them. I know this time of year can be a nightmare for those of us who have had bariatric surgery, and I wanted to let you know if you need help, I'm here! I've got recipes for all sorts of bariatric-friendly holiday foods: pumpkin pie, cauliflower stuffing, cookies, donuts, delicious drinks, etc. Yes, you CAN enjoy the tastes of the season if you've had bariatric surgery! NOTE: Please let me know of food allergies.
  17. I take the Bariatric Advantage Chewy Bites multi and calcium citrate---they're very palatable, like a Starburst, and come in a ton of flavors. The only drawback is they don't have iron, but I take a dissolving, easily digestible iron tablet from BariMelts and those are fairly easy to handle and don't upset my tummy. Give those a shot; you really need to be taking vitamins, especially iron if you menstruate.
  18. Are you on FB? There’s a bariatric support group for NYC. Good luck!

    Not loose Weight pre op

Thank you for explaining this in-depth. I have my first consultation with NYC Bariatric Group. I also have EMBLEMHEALTH GHI. My BMI is 43. I am really hoping they don’t deny me because I don’t believe I have any comorbidities. Any advice besides that? Thank you so much for how well you explained how this insurance works. I was very worried.
  20. Pasta. I love pasta. I make my own pasta. I have an array of pasta-making tools. I know how to cook pasta and how to marry condiments to pasta. It all tastes like gluey wallboard to me now. Which is fine, because I certainly don't need to be eating it. But it's a bit heartbreaking. I have found I don't actually want more than a bite of anything sweet. And I mean a bariatric-sized bite, not a "barely fits on the spoon due to the intrusive influence of gravity" bite. We had something quite spicy yesterday and I bought a piece of flan ("chiquito", she called it, "really small", it was probably 8 cm/3 in on a side). A tiny bit, not even enough to assuage the chile fire within my mouth, and I pushed it away. My fiancé was shocked, because in the Before Times I would have hoovered up the entire piece and gone for seconds. And deli roast beef now just tastes like those fake dead powdered spices they use on it. I don't have an issue with beef in general, even steak, but deli roast beef is gross to me now.
  21. Hey guys! I'm currently 5 weeks post op (30 Ibs down since my surgery date) and will be able to transition to regular foods at week 8. I was curious to know who hasn't had problems with eating foods we are all lectured about avoiding, in moderation (Pizza, bread, fried foods). I am 25 years old and a lot younger than most I've seen on this forum. My goal for Bariatric surgery is to exercise, and portion control while making better food choices, but I never planned on ruling anything out. I'm not an emotional eater or have a mean sweet tooth, my biggest problem with my weight was how much I ate. Is it possible to live a balanced lifestyle after Bariatric surgery without completely cutting out junk food?

Feeling awful 6 weeks post op!

Agree with @vikingbeast. You need to take a big step back. You’re stressed & emotional which only enhances those cravings. You crave the foods which offered you comfort in the past & you crave the familiar of being able to eat what you want, when you want it. And the more you worry the more anxious you become. You may find a therapist who specialises in supporting bariatric patients very helpful. Ask your surgeon for a recommendation. Constipation is part of the journey. I tried to keep on top of mine by taking Benefibre at least every second day, keeping my fluid intake up & taking a stool softener if I got to day 3 or 4 without movement. I also ate very mild instant rolled oats from purée stage. Took me days to eat a full serve but it was good fibre. You may need an enema since it’s been 15 days or a visit to the hospital for assistance. Being constipated does make it seem you’ve stopped losing or have gained. Get rid of it & your weight will be lower very quickly & you’ll feel much better. Stalls are very common. They can last 1 - 3 weeks, sometimes more. And you can experience a number of them as you’re losing. The first usually occurs around week 3 give or take. You just have to ride them out. They’re just your body taking a time out to come to terms with your weight loss. Changes to your sense of smell & taste are also common. They usually are temporary but how long it lasts is individual. Are there specific foods that upset you more you can avoid? The strong body odour is from your body being in ketosis - fat burning. It’s like every bodily secretion reeks. It passes too. I took deodorant, toothbrush, tooth paste & mouth wash & body wipes to work for refreshes during the day. I was someone who frequently skipped meals in an effort to lose weight (did that for 40+years) & tried all those very low calorie diets including one I did several times that was only 500 calories a day. I still lost all my weight & more. Stick as close to your plan as you can. It may take you a little longer to reach a stage recommendation for calories, portion size &/or foods you can eat but that’s ok. You’ll get there.
  23. Protein is important for the rest of your life. Everyone should be eating protein regardless if they are bariatric patients or not. Your body needs it for healing, muscle & bone health, digestion, … https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/functions-of-protein#TOC_TITLE_HDR_9 The daily recommended amount is 0.8g per kilogram for a non bariatric patient. (I’m required to reach 1.2g of protein per kg of weight in maintenance.) My surgeon was ok if I didn’t meet my protein goals each day to begin as long as I was making an effort to be close. It gets easier when you can eat more. If you can’t tolerate the shakes try bone broth, well strained cream soups or consumes, wonton soup broth (no wontons or vegetables of course). I struggled with shakes too so would dilute them & just rode out one a day for the two weeks.
  24. I had vsg surgery last November. I had the typical shedding of hair that happens with weight loss. I thought I was over the hump. But my hair feels even thinner now. I just bought bariatric fusion hair nails and skin vitamins as well as Olaplex. I haven’t been great with my vitamins, so I’m completely taking the blame. But I’m freaking out! Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
  25. Hello, Im completely new to all of this and i started the process to fill out all the requirements to have bariatric surgery approved by my insurance. in that time my company changed insurance providers and we were told the plans would not change much but when the time came to submit the request for approval they rejected my application because that type of surgery is not covered. So now i find myself desperately searching online for a private provider that does cover the surgery because i dont want to loose all the work i already put into this. Any info anyone has would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
