How many Carbs a day ?

Yes, plus you can also subtract sugar alcohols, like xylitol and erythritol . I avoid those now, but consumed them right after surgery because they were in the protein powder i liked. @ayanna_vsg - Are you wishing to follow a ketogenic diet? or just limit carbs? or are you counting as a tool to make sure you are following the doctors plan? or are you asking because you are on pre-op prep diet? different answers to each. For the long term, I find that staying around the 50g mark is best for me. I am not currently in ketosis, but I avoid all white carbs because they trigger bad things, both in my body and in my head. I get carbs from fruit, veg, & beans.
  2. I'm 3 months out and have yet to find a food that my sleeve disagrees with (all introduced slowly, of course!). Sweet, spicy, etc - it all goes down fine. I do get uncomfortable sometimes if I eat too fast or too much. Rice, bread, etc sit hard if I eat more than a bite or two (I've only tried them a few times - a bite of a sushi roll, a bite of pizza crust, etc); but no vomiting, no dumping, nothing. The only thing I haven't tried yet from my 'normal' preop diet is alcohol or anything with carbonation, and I'll probably avoid those for quite a while longer. My sleeve only changed how MUCH I can eat, not WHAT I can eat. Making the right choices is ALL on me

    Substance abuse

Also mixing alcohol and pain killers is extremely dangerous!! Please get help!

    Substance abuse

If you are really concerned about it I would encourage you to enter detox and then a substance abuse program. Your mind will tell you you can use more but your body is NOT the same. Please go to detox and follow up with treatment! If you drink or use a lot you MUST be medically monitored when you stop. Withdrawal from alcohol can be fatal. If you aren't sure about treatment go to Alcoholics Anonymous. It sounds like you have multiple addictions and now that food isn't an option your drug and alcohol use tends to escalate. Please seek treatment!!!

    Substance abuse

So what kind of support are you looking for? Do you want people to congratulate you on the alcohol and drug addiction and encourage you to do more of it? If you can't moderate yourself, abstain entirely. There's no other solution. The sleeve actually makes it easier for drugs and booze to hurt you because of how quickly they absorb into the bloodstream. Moderating yourself is even more essential with this WLS. If your goal is to destroy your organs like your liver or kill yourself, you're on the right track.
  6. LOTS of us experience exactly what you're experiencing. I'm nearly three years past surgery, I've regained some weight, I've drunk too much alcohol, etc. What I've recently come to realize is that discipline can only take me so far. Now I understand that to progress, I need to involve other people to (pardon the pun) scale my efforts. I'm starting to once again work with medical specialists, plan to attend group sessions, etc. Perhaps this approach may work for you too. Good luck!

We were taught to not drink for 6 months because of the issue for dependency! I am 7 months out and I still have not had a drop of alcohol. It will be a year for me next month. I don't drink for the fear of dependency and loosing the life I have created. You need to change and get help!
  8. I was sleeved about 9 months ago and struggling with alcohol dependency and pain killers. I haven't had any complications with my sleeve but fear my ongoing issues with alcohol and pain killers will ruin my sleeve. So far I've lost close to 50kgs but having difficulty with loose skin and how y body looks [emoji30]

Hate tracking food - now stalled

No treats. I never deviate from this outside of an alcoholic beverage every now and then (and when I do that, I have protein shakes to meet my protein goals and open up calories for the alcohol) and occasionally when I have to travel for work (and I rely on protein shakes again). I have trained myself to look at food as fuel. It took a while, but it is worth the effort! I'm now in the 1500 calorie range per day, 20 carbs, and 120-140 grams of protein. I get ParmCrisps at Sam's Club. I found another brand at Wal-Mart in a smaller bag. They are awesome (and, as you can see, I have made them a staple in my diet...)

    Alcohol?

I have never been a big drinker nor will I ever be! I'm not concerned about alcoholism bc I do not have an addictive personality. I was never a food addict, my WLS was due to other medical issues. A drink every now and again will be fine just as before.

    Food is my drug

Awesome story Sherrie! I am so happy the sleeve is working for him and his mind/conditioning is losing the battle! My background is similar also, mom was abusive, dad an alcoholic...but we always had food! I definitely did not get the emotional support I needed while growing up and here I am...picking up the pieces. I wish you and your husband well <3

    Alcohol?

I agree with you. That's my experience. I got to a point that alcohol wasn't affecting me. That was dangerous. I'm still learning to deal with that. Alcoholism among weight-loss patients is a very real danger. Good luck!

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

OHHHHHHH maybe you were referring to the alcoholic who only eats gummy bears and drinks beer post LOL
  15. Congratulations!! I just started my pre-op diet today!! I was in the same boat regarding second thoughts because of unsupportive people in my life. But, like you, I had to remind myself that this was for *me* and *my* future! Regarding the unflavored protein, I plan on adding it to unsweetened jello for non-alcoholic jello shots. I'm also going to be making bone broth this weekend, so I'll add some to that as well. Or store bought veggie organic broth?

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

Great posts. This is why it's extremely important for people with addictive personalities to be extremely wary of engaging in anything they find addictive post-op.. there's a higher risk of what @dsdesignamentioned is "transfer addiction". We should be wary in general of what we consume due to WLS impacting the way our body processes food, physiologically and psychologically. However, extra baggage like this requires extra caution.. and if one even thinks they might not be able to moderate themselves, abstain entirely. In my case, my liver damage was done comprehensively by a horrific American style diet rife with extremely carb dense food, carb/sugar dense liquids, and a sedentary lifestyle. While I did hit bottles pretty hard in the few time I did have a drink (would go through most of a 750mL bottle of Captain Morgan in the span of an entire day, mixing with sodas like Cherry Coke for example), never getting to the point of throwing up, but enough to have to watch how I walked, I didn't drink often whatsoever, maybe a small handful of times a year. It was a blessing because my mother and father were both alcoholics, so I had been warned that I was predisposed to alcoholism, but that never transferred to me. Nonetheless, with my phases of depression came food addiction, which, as far as the liver is concerned, just as bad as alcohol and drugs, just doesn't damage it as fast as those things can/will. So to summarize, sodas and alcohol will hit us twice as hard post-WLS as it will before.. it's extremely imperative we monitor ourselves, and it's important to identify potential addictive behaviors or addiction transfers and nix them right away: 1) Keep food, especially snack foods, further away from where you veg out and harder to reach, 2) If you're the only one in the house that eats certain junk food, just don't get it at all, it's presence is especially bad for anyone susceptible to compulsive/addictive eating/drinking behaviors, 3) Talk yourself out of it.. there's no one that will save you from you. 4) Especially monitor booze if you're going to drink it.. and drink it slow, because the sleeve might allow it to pass through us that means it makes us drunk that much faster, and it also means it can overwhelm the liver that much faster.

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

I know this first hand. My sister had gastric bypass 10 years ago. She hardly drank before. She is a now a raging alcoholic who has been in and out of the hospital and rehabs about 50 times. She doesn't eat anymore, other than gummy bears or nips candy and drinks about 2 cases of beer per day along with chain smoking. I have no idea how she is alive. I have tried to help her for years even having her live with me this past year but she was destroying my life with her drinking and violent outbursts so I had to let her go. She now lives with my other sister making her life a living hell. She lost her husband, her home, her kids, her jobs, everything. So she lost weight but she gained an alcoholic addiction. This is why I will rarely drink after my surgery. .Scares the hell out of me

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

Alcoholism is a serious problem for post WLS. It's a transfer addiction. Be very careful. It's not just about the calories, it's the damage you are doing to your liver. Most WLS patients already have extensive scar tissue from having a fatty liver pre surgery. It takes a long time for that to heal if ever.

    Holy Dumping Syndrome, Batman!

No judgement here I love my wine and vodka!! From my experience I started drinking around 6-8months. Just be careful cause you don't want to dump. I had a vodka cooler once before my 1 year was up and it was embarrassing cause was at a social event. Bent over with cramps and running to bathroom. See if wine okay for you but that first year dumping can happen and it's like wth caused that?!! I went on a girls trip 4 months post op and didn't drink - it was hell!! But it's only a few months. Also you'll feel the alcohol very quickly I always have to eat and drink or I'll be under the table. And if I remember correctly we're supposed to be holding off on drinking with meals for the first few months....as that can also lead to dumping. Good luck it does get easier with time and as your body heals!

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

LOL well the funny and sad part about it is, I'm actually taking my mom on the cruise for her bday and so I bought the deluxe unlimited alcohol package and the deluxe exclusive restaurants package and she doesn't even drink, maybe one glass of wine a week, ha! I did this not knowing I would have the surgery 4 months later ....

    Alcohol?

A few times a month I will have a glass of wine or part of a light beer. Alcohol hits me hard and therefore I don;t have much. With wine I can drink a glass over a period of time, beer I don;t even drink a full glass before I fill full.
  22. Oh good that's comforting..lol. I'll test my alcohol endurance at home first too... I'm so nervous about alcohol because little sister had gastric bypass years ago and after she became a raging alcoholic and now she just eats gummy bears, drinks and smokes. I'm shocked she's still alive. she's a mess but she hardly drank before the surgery. I recently quit smoking so the 2 weeks not eating pre op and not being able to smoke is gonna be rough... Did u find the pre op fast unbearable? I'm so nervous I have to start liquids only July 5. I'm trying to do low carb now also ...

    Holy Dumping Syndrome, Batman!

@Melissa315, I am sorry you were attacked for asking a question about having some wine at your wedding. Unfortunately that is one of the hot buttons here. Of course your doctor is your best source for an answer. Everyone tolerates wine and alcohol differently. I am almost 5 years out, and my stomach will not tolerate either. Even a sip burns so badly it feels like a knife sticking me. Please don't give up on the group; it does have many answers. Please feel free to private message me for any questions. I'm not sure what surgery you had--I had the sleeve. No matter what WLS you had the problems and questions exist for all of us. Best wishes in your journey. Don't hesitate to contact me. Cruise 4 months after surgery

I had my band removed and sleeve revision done ten days ago. My wife and I are going on a 7 night Carnival cruise from New Orleans to the western Caribbean in October. After I had the sleeve surgery, I freaked out realizing I may not be able to eat and drink and enjoy a cruise anymore. My doctor told me at 4 months out I'm going to be healed sufficiently to eat normal foods and even have a drink here and there, just don't overdo it. That made me feel a lot better. I plan to have a few sips of wine after I get to phase3 and do a trial run from home in case it hits me pretty hard. Dont want to beta test my new alcohol tolerance in public. Lol
  25. These are general supplements, most commonly given to alcoholics in the ER. When bariatric patients need supplementation, they need custom nutrients based on their individual levels. A general one really won't suffice.
