    Issues/weight gain...

I feel your pain. I was banded 6/2005. Lost over 80 lbs over two yesrs starving. I was to tight or i would have lost more i think. I got so tight my band shut off and my Dr. was relocating. He told me to go to the ER. Huge mistake! They removed all Fluid and opened my band. He said I was very malnurished. So they said take a 2 month holiday. Weight gain is horrible. So I went back for a fill and it was to tight again after a week. He unfilled it then way to loose. To much money on it so I put it off and I am at square one. My doctor appoligises and said they should never fully remove the fluid. It is so hard to adjust. We now are going to start over. I am doing low low to no carbs to start until after fourth and the famiy leaves back to their home. Then I am going to give it a try again. Startrd the gym too. X your fingers for me.
  3. Hi. My name is Alllie and I had my surgery in June of 2003. I started at 300 and I lost 120 pounds with in 2 years. Things were going great. I was looking good, feeling good... then I went and had a fill - I guess it was too tight - I started throwing up bile in my sleep, couldn't even recline without burping up nasty stuff. I refused to go to the doc for a while- because I wanted to keep losing weight. When I finally went back- it seems as if I had turned my esphogaus into a baby stomach. That meant that I had a stomach in my esphogaus, the band stomach and then the regular stomach. They took all the Fluid out of the fill - I started eating like a wild woman- seriously - with in a month- I think that I gained 20 pounds. So - Over the next 2 and a half years- I have been filled and unfilled so many times. Sometimes I can eat whatever, whenever. I'm back to being filled at 2.8 - and haven't lost anything with in a few months. My weight is back up to 280 and I feel like such a failure. I didn't tell many people that i was getting this surgery- and I'm glad that I didn't - due to this. I'm wondering if anyone has been in a situation similiar to mine and what they have done to help get back on track. Thanks Allie
  4. Surely this must be the 9th circle of bandster hell!! I was banded a little over 3 months ago (13 weeks) and had my first SMALL fill 6 weeks ago. I have pretty much NO restriction and have 2 more weeks to go until my second fill. This day cannot come fast enough! I feel that overall, I am doing well. I've been working out 3-5 times a week, going to Weight Watchers religiously, and making good food choices, most of the time. But, inevitably, I have those days when I just want to eat everything. This week, I have had 3 of them, including today. Good times! I have had a ridiculous amount of food and am thinking about the next thing I am going to put in my mouth as we speak. Tomorrow, I will be disgusted with myself and go back to the gym and get on track, but it will probably take 2-3 days of working out just to offset today's munchfest. These are the days that have facilitated my colossal weight gain and these are the days I really need a working band!! I don't want to be able to eat this much and I don't want to feel hungry. I feel guilty because I know I am supposed to be eating small portions, and somedays, I'm just not. Deliberatley disobeying doctor's orders and maybe even putting my health at risk!! I assume that because everything goes down and I feel normal, I am okay. Could I be setting myself up for future problems by overeating?? I just want some restriction and I want this day to be over so I can start damage control tomorrow. Who still overeats after going through all the trouble of weight loss surgery?? Apparently, I do.
  5. So I am doing my 6 month supervised diet. I went on vacation and gained some weight. I think I am still going to be up by a couple pounds by the time my next weigh in is. Is this going to be detrimental to me? I have lost like 3-4 pounds every month so far (this will be my 4th weigh in).

    Somebody Stop Me!

Hello all, I posted this tread in the pre-op forum but didn't get a lot of response, i.e. as far as from those who had to follow the 6-month supervised diet and if they gained and IF they still approved them. Just wondered if any of you had any experience with this... if you don't mind taking a look!! http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f84/weight-gain-6-morbid-obesity-supervised-diet-56652/ I appreciate your input!
  7. I had a band and lost 40lbs but was always slimming and was disappointed with my weight loss. So, I had a revision to the sleeve. At first I lost 12 lbs, and then stopped dead. I followed the diet, exercised intermittanly but still didnt lose. The nutritionist where I had surgery had me take Metformin as I take anti-psychotic meds and they are known to cause weight gain. It didnt work. I have been in touch with the doctor that did my revision and he feels the problem was due to too much scare tissue from the band.He has only had this happen one other time. I am going back on Dec 6 for a "Re" revision. I am not going to name the doctor as everyone I know, or have seen on the boards have had excellent results. I am fearful that the same thing will happen again. I know I will have to lose weight if my stomach is smaller, but I am not sold just yet. Oh, the doctor is doing the new surgery for free. I cant get much better than that. Has anyone else had this problem?

    12 years and NO success

I had the band done in 08 and recently 10 months ago I had it emergency removed due to prolapse. I did have success in the very beginning, losing about 70lbs. I do have to admit it was not easy!! I was working out twice a day and watching every little calorie. I had 5 to 6 fills and became very sick do to restriction and had it emptied. After that it all went down hill as far as weight gain Today I weigh only 10lbs less then the day I had the band put in. I'm two weeks from my Gastric bypass surgery!!! I'm praying all goes well! Good Luck on your journey Sent from my SGH-T999L using the BariatricPal App
  9. Soooo Thanksgiving was rough for me .... I honestly felt sad because I couldn't eat. I was happy that I couldn't buuut I just missed the food. I didn't measure my food I just put a little bit of this/that on my plate and couldn't eat 1/2 of it ... heck I couldn't even eat a fourth of it. I did enjoy my friends but ... couldn't help mourning my old friend ... food. I know I had too many carbs because I didn't start with Proteins. I was kind of scared to weigh myself because I felt that i'd gained. Today I weighed myself and my suspicions were confirmed. I'm not gonna trip out about the gain ... just making note of it and the cause and moving forward.

    What If...

So I had a few minutes to spare and found myself rehashing all the "what if's" of wls. It almost feels like my health and happiness are hinged on this. I guess in a way it is. In my immediate family there is a history of CAD, DM, CVA's, Colon CA, etc. So the reality of it is if I don't lose the weight, the aforementioned is what I have in my future. Not acceptable. I've lost weight a hundred times over only to gain it right back. I don't eat unhealthy foods, I just eat too much. I exercise about 3x's per week, I drink water, limit my intake of sodas and I've never smoked a cigarette. I'm 5'2 and about 206lbs today. My belly is about to burst out of my size 14 jeans that are too small, but I continue to wear them anyway (denial). I am sick of painful joints, back pain, being winded with activity, avoiding social events, sleeping all weekend, urinary incontinence and all the other stuff that goes with being fat. So I was desperate... I am refinancing my first home (2yrs into mortgage) in order to pay for this. My employer has an obesity exclusion on our insurance at work... I expect they'll remove that exclusion as the company grows, but for now I'm on my own. I could make a list a mile long of "what if's" as to why NOT to have surgery, but instead I choose to focus on the "what if's" as to why it's so crucial for me to have surgery. What if I have a heart attack? What if I am dx'd with Diabetes? What if I have a stroke? What if I get cancer? Who'll take care of my son, my mother, my niece, my employees, etc. Who will fight for what's right for the patients I take care of? Who will grow old with my BFF? The thought of all those haunting questions are much scarier to me than the "what if's" that go with surgery. When my daddy went in to have an abdominal aneurysm removed he told a friend of his he'd die without the surgery. His buddy asked him "but what if you die from the surgery?" My daddy (always full of advice) simply told him he at least had to try.... and try he did. I do have some concerns about undergoing major surgery in order to lose weight. It terrifies me. Change is terrifying, but oh so necessary. So why should I have surgery? Physically - I want to be able to go for a walk or run, I want to not have huge "cankles" at the end of the day, I want to not be out of breath coming back from the mailbox, I want to be free of arthritic pain in my hips, I want to put on clothes without a struggle. Emotionally - I want to be proud of who I see in the mirror, I want to get off the vicious cycle of weight gain & depression, I want the inner me to like the outter me. Spiritually - I have no excuse for not going to church, except that I feel so ashamed of the weight I've put on. I know they aren't staring at me, but that is exactly how it feels. I want to be able to go to the altar and worship once again... Financially - I love my job, but since I've put on the weight I've stopped scheduling speaking engagements (something I LOVE), calling on new accounts, visiting old accounts, speaking at meetings, etc. It's almost like I've given up on me. So the more of all that stuff I do, the more money I can make Socially - I have no social life anymore. I hate going to anything where there is a crowd of people. I avoid it all costs. My clothes are too small, I feel horrible and I just wind up miserable. I have the most amazing boyfriend who LOVES to get out and socialize and yet he's stuck with me... at home... every weekend. So there ya go... I don't feel like I really have a choice. It's either another yo-yo round of dieting with impending disappointment from the scales or a true lifestyle change... I'm 40yrs old and I have so much living and loving left to do. This is for a better me so I can be a better mom, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, girlfriend, boss and hopefully encourage others to do the same. Here's to the living, loving and laughing that is yet to come!
  11. So I know this is probably on the forum and for the life of me I can't find any posts to fit what I'm asking, so I'm putting this out there. I may be just spoiled from consistently losing every week (except for a short lived plateau around Christmas time) and I'm really happy with my progress, but today I stepped on for my weekly weigh in and had gained a little over a pound. I track on MFP every little morsel and have been walking 5-6 days a weeks around 2/4 miles a day and my calories ranged from 700-1200 over this week and my protein and carbs were on target (this is all I'm supposed to watch per my NUT), so not sure what is going on. I should probably just not worry about it and see what happens next week. But any thoughts? LBT is very supportive and I may just need this, as I know this is not much of a weight gain, but as I'm sure some of you can understand, weight gain (no matter how much/little it is) is hard to accept when you are doing everything right and want to get away from obesity.
  12. Each day there are more and more newly banded people here who are questioning their weight loss. You think you should have lost more or be losing more then you have. A loss is a loss whether it be pounds or inches. You are not going to lose weight every day, every week or even every month in some cases. No one that is obese ever gained 100lbs over night or some even over a year. It was a gradual weight gain that will take time to get rid of. You're questioning what am I doing wrong. If you are following the plan that your doctor put in place for you to the T then you are doing nothing wrong. As the body loses weight it has to catch up if you initially lose a lot in the beginning. People have went months with no weight loss but as long as you are not gaining you will get there. 1 to 2lbs a week is normal for a lapband patient. If it's more then you're that much more ahead of the game. Be patient, stay off the scale. Weigh yourself once a week or every other so you won't suffer disappointment and question if you made the right decision. If you can't stop weighing yourself then you have to stop being disappointed every time you don't lose. Just hang in there it will happen if you are doing exactly what you are suppose to be doing. You can't eat ice cream, cake, Cookies, potato chips and all the other junk food and wonder why the scale is not moving. Drink your Water, eat your portion size and make sure most of that is Protein, make sure you get 8 hours of sleep at night because you lose weight when you are sleeping, make sure you are moving your bowels every day and stop stressing. You will get there.
  13. About the cancer fear, with the sleeve your dr can scope you... not so easy with the RNY. With RNY, a big piece of the stomach is left in the abdomen with no way in to take a look with a scope. There is an increased chance of GERD with the sleeve. Taking antacids all the time make it more difficult for the body to use calcium as well. This being said, what you eat has something to do with it, and the return of GERD to sleeve patients is correlated with weight gain... (perhaps food choices are at least part of the fault in this as well?) I did not have constant acid before surgery, but sometimes did.... used antacids for 6months after surgery, went off of them with no problem. If I eat junk, I may get a little acid... with chocolate mostly! I LOVE the sleeve.
  14. It shouldn't affect your fill, but it might effect your weight loss. SSRIs are know to cause a bit of weight gain, so just be prepared. Maybe it won't affect you as much, since you're following such a low calorie plan. But it is a possibility

    Stretching?

Those are a great thing for us Amanda! Imagine yourself looking at those cute glass dishes pre-sleeve, those would never look like a "serving" of food to you then, right? Me either! I have to say I love my sleeve. MissAMcCoy: A lot of people experience the dreaded "stall" in the beginning due to their bodies recognizing the severe calorie deficit and therefore shutting off the ability to burn stored fat as a survival mechanism. This is a long proven theory in the fitness world when it comes to metabolism stimulation- this is why fitness models and body builders insist you MUST eat every 3 hours and have the proper amount of calories each day to burn the fat while keeping the muscle. It's a very high Protein low carb diet. The same rule applies here, calories in actually make your metabolism work harder- and too many calories in cause weight gain. It's a tricky game for people with normal sized stomachs, but we all have a sleeve advantage here- so don't be afraid you're eating too much, and get your protein is my advice. At 500 calories a day, your body is bound to eventually recognize that it's starving and slow down on the weight loss. I find the Protein shakes to be amazing for weight loss and getting my needed healthy calories in from protein. Nutritionally, I find iSatori's Eat Smart Protein powder to be the best out there- they do not promote on here like other brands, but if you read the nutrition on them vs. any other product, they win in the protein/fiber category and have virtually no sugar. Your sleeve is pretty strong, I doubt you can stretch it with mere eating to fullness at this point. If that were the case, people would be "popping stitches" all over the place and this would be an incredibly risky procedure.

    Nervous

You can't have a net gain, so that would mean you can weigh more than you did in your initial weigh in after the three months are done. If you started in November, then by February you need to be the same or less weight. (I'm guessing based on what you wrote) How has your eating been? Are you keeping carbs low, not drinking calories?? I never bought into the period weight gain thing. Sure my weight fluctuates, but I've never seen that fluctuation around my period.

    Worried

I guess i am really getting nervous because my paper work will be submitted to my insurance Friday i have cigna..anyone denied because of weight gain while on the six month supervised diet??
  19. I shouldn't just say today-in general I dislike this train of thought: I'd be lying if I said that years and years, the better part of a lifetime, of social constructs has affected both how I feel about myself and the way people have treated me. I sometimes have the train of thought, that I shouldn't lose weight because I'd just be giving in to "societal pressures". That if I lose the weight, I'm not going to be able to tell who my real friends are, what someone's inner soul is like, or if men are really interested in me, or would have been if I was heavier. The last time I was involved with someone, I weighed 150 lbs. (I got REALLY sick for about 6 months, this is not a normal weight for me). I looked darn good, despite being horribly unhappy in all ever venues, which would eventually lead to a 100lb weight gain. I wore a size 8 and wasn't skinny by any means, but fairly normal, not "fat" and nice curves. The guy I was involved with seemed to be really into super skinny women. and would add all these anime convention "models" or super tiny skinny chicks dressed up for comicon conventions. He also showed me his "favorite p**n star"-an incredibly skinny, rib showing bleach blonde woman. (The mere fact that he had this weird idealizations about fantasies and stereotypes should have been a red flag but I was dealing with other issues.) I finally asked him if he would find someone else more attractive simply because they were thinner. His response: "Not necessarily. I mean, maybe if you could lose 10lbs." For frame of reference, here's a photo from me from that time period (in fact, was about 160 in this photo). I think I look fine (well, despite the goofy face), and I guess I just don't get why that's not enough? Or not considered thin enough or even fat. Thank god-he's gone. But words like that haunt me because it reaffirms the concept that men will only want anorexic, fake looking women...and I will never be that. I don't want to. And I also don't want to lose weight because of comments like that. I want to be sure I'm doing this for myself, and I want to know I'll be able to cherry pick the true people from the bad when/if I start getting more attention. *Sigh*
  20. Studies show weight gain or loss is mostly about diet and very little about exercise. Excercise will improve your cardio and build muscle which will help increase your metabolism, but in the end it's all about what you put in your mouth. I lost 22 pounds on my preop diet and 100 pounds overall, without engaging in any exercise whatsoever. Sure, I have a physical job and an active lifestyle, but it's the same job and lifestyle I've always had. Nothing changed except my food choices and portions. Just concentrate on eating healthy, stay away from carbs, drink LOTS of Water and focus on the things you can control in order to reach your goal.

    Wondering About Weight Loss

You've only been banded since April 24th. That's 6 days. Most people don't start losing until after they get a fill or two and have some restriction. The first month after surgery is for healing only not losing. My advice is to put away the scale for a month and give yourself time to heal. I'm so happy that I read this I'm only 10 days out of surgery n my weight I have been checking everyday I was down 8lbs until 2day n my weight has went back up 2lbs. I was so worried because I just starter purée 2day so I thought that had something 2 do with my weight gain. I get on my treadmill everyday for 30-40 minunte's a day n still gained 2lbs.

My Reality check at 20 months

I don't know about you, but I've lost and gained weight in my long life more times than I could count right now. The behaviors that accompanied my earlier weight gains include: * "Celebrating" after losing weight * NOT having a weight maintenance plan. AT ALL! * NEVER weighing myself * Eating LOTS of sweets and carbs * NOT tracking / recording / being mindful of how much I'm eating * NOT exercising * Feeling like a regain 5-10 pounds is so awful I can't deal with it. Ha! Needless to say, I didn't have the benefit of a smaller tummy's restriction during all those prior times. But I also am no longer counting on that saving me this time. My long-term success is going to have to rely on ALL the tools I'm building now. Everyone's entitled to their own personal version of weight loss salvation. I currently belong to the Church of Righteous Daily food Tracking and Weighing. P.S. I shouldn't even be posting on this thread; I'm not even 5-1/2 months post-op. Sorry.

    Protien Absorption

Well this initially started as a search to find out if it was worth it to buy protien shakes that have 30g+ of protien in them. I am still not fully satisfied that say those 3oz shots of 42g of protien are a waste. I would love some real answers backed up by medical websites that are in plain english as to whether the body can use 42g of protien in one meal what is the magic number? Obviously obsene amounts of protien are a big mistake. But if we are supposed to have 60-80g a day why not have it all at once or in two meals? It seems to me that nomatter what it is calories in the end that determine weight gain or loss. Eating enough protien prevents our body from burning muscle eating too much protien can lead to other health problems like gout. We all know what a healthy per day total is for us from our nutritionists if no one else. But it still begs the question of how much can be absorbed from one meal. If it truly absorbs all the way through the intestines then it would be in our system for what like 24hr's? It seems that in that time it would make the argument moot whether a 42g shot of protien is a waste or not. I am not trying to be argumentative. I am just frustrated at the lack of solid information I have been able to find via the internet. Every source seems to disagree and most of the sources I have seen on the internet are body building sites and I'm sorry but I don't believe their info is necessarily correct for the general public at least. I just want real answers that are backed up by something that is written in lay language so that I can follow it. Jack I love you but with all your technical talk you lose me, I was a music major not a science major.

    protien shake

NO - consuming more calories than you burn makes you gain weight...period. There are lots of things to take into consideration. What is your BMR, are you eating good calories that make you feel full and don't affect your blood sugar so you are starving later??? All of that goes into the equation, but the simple fact is 3500 calories = 1 lb. If you want to lose weight you have to create a caloric deficit. After going off the liquid diet, I hardly ever drink Protein shakes b/c they don't stay with me. If I have one for Breakfast, I am starving by 9:30. Some people are different and like Protein Shakes or NEED them to make sure they are getting in enough calories and protein. If you are eating a normal diet and adding protein shakes, you might be eating too may calories which could cause weight gain...it is not the shakes...it is the calories that make you gain.
