    Meds and weight gain

    i know exactly what you are talking about. I used to take Lyrica for various neuropathies, but suspected something was up. My weight gain and loss seemed to coincide with my off and on use of the drug. So, I toughed it out and did not take it for Novemeber and December. In January, I went back on it and in spite of 800 calories a day, I gained 1back 10 pounds in 12 days. So, I stopped it again.

  3. Hey everyone. Its been a while since Ive been on here. Been hiding my head in the sand for a long, long time. Well, Im pulling myself out of the sand now. Been watching the scales go up slowly. They hit 180 last week. Was 150 last year. That was it. My aha moment. Haven't felt like I even had a sleeve lately. While I still eat small meals, I can snack endlessly. And yes, I know thats not good to do so. Just becuz I can doesn't mean I should. I know all that.. As I said, Im pulling myself back up. Been back on track for 4 days now. Focusing on Protein (but Im not afraid of small amts of carbs either), drinking Water, not drinking with meals, and moving more. I need to lose 40 lbs. Sounds like a daunting task right now, but Ive done it before, I can do it again. ANy pointers out there from people who have been where I am? High protein, low calorie Snacks? I appreciate any support I can get. Ive had my sleeve for 2 1/2 yrs and Ive never made it to goal. This time I will!

    Travel problems

    Ok so it's been a while since I last blogged but a lot has been going on. I'm from Iceland. An island way up north. So I just came back from travelling to Spain, a Mediterranean country and let me tell you, things there are different from what I'm used to. I've been to Spain 3 times before and never thought that much about food. I just ate what ever and loved it. But having the lap band is more difficult. The town I was staying at didn't have that many restaurants but when I went to them, they carried BREAD BREAD BREAD. They loved serving bread or huge dishes! I love tabas mmmm but it's served on bread, thick slices of bread. I can only eat thin slices. So when out eating, I ended up eating fries, omelette and lasange. But only found one restaurant carrying lasagne. But I tried cooking at home as well, so I wouldn't starve and didn't really want omelette or fries for every meal. The temperature! Gosh it was HOT. That mean that my polar body was swollen ever day with extra fluid and that also meant that my stomach opening was a lot smaller. I had to make a lot of trips to the bathroom spit out food that got stuck in the opening. The Productive burping was terrible! No matter what I ate. My worst case was a tomato!! Hello!! A tomato, a very well chewed tomato! I just had terrible time with it. That's why I was afraid to eat what ever was on the menu. But fries, I know they are deep fried and not that healthy, but I could chew them into baby food! What does a hot woman need in a hot weather??? ice cream. mmmm love some good ice cream. And I had a lot of it. It was a guilty pleasure. But it was so good in the hot weather. Alcohol. I was very very careful with that. I wanted a cold beer very badly but I stuck to cocktails with no carbonated liquids in it and yes that was just fine. And never got drunk or tipsy or what ever. Did not want to add hangover and throwing up to the PB!! I even at once point thought that it would be best to finish the trip off by eating only chocolate and ice cream because that went down very well haha. Also the company I was with. They were so nice and understanding but I was giving myself hard time for making them wait for me while I ate really really really slowly. We could never eat anywhere in hurry, ever. I came with a solution though, I sometimes grabbed a banana because that's easy to eat on a go. Now at home, I'm still swollen from the travel but I couldn't wait stepping on the scale and no weight gain!! to my surprise! I'll see how it went after my body has adjusted after the travel. I have to tell you though that for the first time in my life, I had lots of left overs at the restaurants I ate at. I felt like apologizing for it to the waiters, for not finishing my food. I've always finished everything at a restaurant but I was very careful, even though the portions were big, that I would only eat until I was satisfied (not full) and I'm proud of that. Overall, I did enjoy my trip very much and Spain is a fantastic country. And I've always enjoyed the food there before the lap band. But this was a difficult trip food wise and not that healthy I'm glad it didn't set me back tough. I'm happy to be home and on Monday hopefully my body has recovered and that I will not have any extra fluid.

    calories in/out debate

    I know that lots of people are convinced that weight loss is about calories in/out and I know that that holds true for the majority of people. But I have to wonder about us Cushies. I don't think that it is a matter that we have a really slow metabolism. But the thing is, it doesn't matter how much I eat or don't eat. The calorie in/out would hold true if I gained massive amounts of weight on 1200-1500, when I couldn't lose on 1200, 1000, 800 or less than 700 calories. (I did gain 10 pounds in a week at 1000 calories, but that was one week.) It is entiely possible that my weight gain/loss has been only water, which is fine on one level because it lessens my edema problems. But not fine for why I had WLS. If my metabolism was truely that slow, I wouldn't metabolize medications as fast as I do, and I would gain constantly. But as for low calories, I just don't see how other people can function on sub 700 long term. I will give you that it is entirely prorbable that I entered into a deep Low during the month I was too restricted. But I think the lowered calorie intake made the Low worse.
  6. I agree with the advice you can generally eat what you’d like once you’ve well established your maintenance. However, there are a few things you have to remember: portion control, frequency, what your system will tolerate & your danger foods. At 18months, I don’t have rice, pasta & bread. I avoid sweets (desserts, cakes, biscuits, ice cream, cream, etc.) 99.9% of the time. I don’t add sugar or artificial sweeteners to anything. I’ve reduced alcohol to probably once a month. No fast food but have had Asian takeaway three times when with friends. I call it my reduce, restrict, avoid plan. It allows me to have a little of certain foods (the odd treat) limit other foods & avoid the foods which would equate to weight gain for me or fill up my tummy too quickly. I switch up foods to healthier choices & use healthier cooking methods. As some random examples: I make chia pudding (milk, milk powder, vanilla extract & chia seeds) if I want a dessert. I use an air fryer for a crispy finish instead of frying, use non stick pans & spray olive oil. When I had the takeaway I chose either chicken & cashews (braised) or steamed pork & prawn gyoza (ate the filling only). I just don’t buy certain foods - if they’re not in my house I can’t eat them. I also deleted the home delivery apps off my phone - lol. I take my lunch to work so I’m not hitting up the food courts. It’s not easy and I work at it every day. I just hope one day I will have ‘rewired my brain’ as @AZhiker mentioned & it will be a little easier. I just don’t want to be overweight again. But in reality, it all comes down to finding what works for you. Good luck.

    Nuvaring is my choice of BC. I have had no issues before or after my sleeve surg with weight gain... I do have an issue with a decrease in my sexual drive.. So that SUCKS. But, I can't have babies right now, so we have to work thru that issue.
  9. Yeah, I thought about that too but I went ahead and had the revision done. I was very attached to my band. I thought exactly what you posted when I thought of a revision surgery. I know someone who had the bypass around the same time as my band, and now they are twice as heavy. I initially went in for a fill since I've been traveling, working and moving, I hadn't seen a fill doctor for a couple of years since I was still doing well and losing with the level of Fluid I had. So when I finally made an appointment with my current bariatric center, just to check my fluid level, and maybe get more added, they suggested the revision, and an unfill right then due to an enlarged esophagus (Too tight again, 2nd time for me). Gasp! I wasn't a happy camper because I knew I was going to gain some weight back once they unfill me. No way, I just want a fill please. Um, no can do... Either rest my band for months again and get refilled & struggle to find that sweet spot again or rest my band and get a revision. That's why I opted for the revision so I wouldn't go through the weight gain-weight loss cycle again since I had a habit of being too tight. I was still working to get to goal again after my first enlarged esophagus episode. I almost didn't go through with it. I'm happy with the results, the physical sensation that I get from the sleeve vs the band when I eat, as well as the weight loss results so far. I'm 24 days post-op and I'm down 22 lbs, and it's been relatively easy staying on program. Haven't thrown up or slimed yet. I guess from the band all these years, I know when to stop. That familiar pressure in the back of our throat... Stop or else. ^^ But, having said that, It is all very new to me though so check back in a few months lol. Since you're at goal, does your doctor still want you to have a revision, do you have issues with your band? Either way, hope it works out for you.

    Cream for scars?

    Ugh. Stretch marks, wrinkles, saggy skin.... All part and parcel of the weight gain and surgery. Mederma, bio corneum, melaquin, hydroquinone, ammonium lactate.... There are a zillion out there. Stretch marks fade... As do the angry scars from the surgery. But we feel like we need to DO something, so let us do just that. And? As women, so much of this world is tied up in our appearance---think of the sheer volume of makeup products and anti wrinkle creams out there--- and you'll get it. Not saying it is right, but there it is. For me? I'll fight aging tooth and nail, and what ever little benefit I see in 30 years, well, I'll take it.     7 Months Post Op

    From someone who hasn't had surgery yet, please don't be a statistic! We all have spent the better part of our lives being statistics. Weight gain after diet statistics. % of fat American statistics. Do NOT be a gain after WLS statistic. Get your head back in the game, ladies! I'll be there with you one day and you might need to remind me, too!

    7 Months Post Op

    I haven't even had my first apt yet, but, focus on what you have lost........65 lbs good for you! Maybe this is just one of those periods where you have tapered off, but if you stick with it, you will start losing again. The alternative is just weight gain and complications, so hang in there. I would give anything to lose 65 lbs, think of how good you look and the health benefits you've gained so far. Keep reading other posts, maybe there will be something suggested that will work for you.
  13. I always thought it was a complete farce- the idea that a person could gain weight exercising simply by putting on muscle mass. I was wrong! One day about a month ago, I suddenly started craving Protein again- something I haven’t really craved in 6 months or so. Of course, at this point, I know when my body is trying to tell me something, so I went back to the old (and very useful) rules for the band and began eating protein before anything else. Within a few days, two things started to happen. 1) I started gaining weight. 2) I could quite suddenly began noticing increased strength at the gym. For a few days, I was a little worried about the weight gain, but a trip to Old Navy, Macy’s, and Express put my fears to rest- I’d dropped a clothing size. I am now a size 4 rather than a size 6. So I’m ok like this! I’ve started losing the weight again but chances are I will fluctuate like this forever; drifting between 125 and 135 lbs. I figure as long as I maintain a good cardio and weight training routine and listen to my body, I’ll be just fine!

    Girls: Depo Provera and the Lapband

    I know I packed on a lot after being on Depo, but was off it for 2 years and did not lose much. I am back on it and BOTH the surgeon and Gyno said it has very little to do with weight gain/retention. My loss has been good with band, but I wonder if it would be better without it. I want to switch BC methods, but neither doc wants me on the pill because I am 42. The Gyno and I have discussed some permanent things, but I don't know about going that route either. I have no kids, and probably won't have any, but am just unsure about taking a permanent step. Good job to stop the Depo now and let it cycle out. It takes a long time to regulate after wards.     Just Had Surgery!

    Don't worry about the weight gain. I came home from the hospital 4 lbs heavier. It is the IV's. I'm so sorry you had problems. You'll get back on track. This board is wonderful for support. We all need each other.

    advice on birth control please :-)

    I've been on the depo injection for the last 16 years. I'm 33 now. I've never had issues with the injection and was big before I started on it. I didn't need to come off for the op, and have no side effects. Weight gain has been linked to the fact it can speed up your metabolism, I'm not sure how true this is. I don't want any children and most definitely don't want any accidents so for me this was the most reliable form of contraception. Since my op, I've lost 104lbs in 7 months and I've had the shot twice post op, so I don't feel it is having an impact on my weight. Downside, it can take time for your monthly to start again so if you're in a rush for a baby then that's maybe something to consider.

    Weight Gain

    I'm 2 years post opt however, I've done really good. I gained 6 1/2 should I really be alarmed? I know that I've made some bad eating choices. I've invested in a treadmill. My weight lost has been between 98- 105, pounds. I have a Pannicelectomy back in November 2013. However, I still have some anbdominal swelling could this cause weight gain also? I refuse to go back to the old me...
  18. I'm struggling to not eat all the things in these weeks pre-surgery. I don't have my date yet, but probably some time in May. My surgeon didn't require any weight loss pre-surgery and I almost wish he had. Anyone experience this? It's like I'm saying goodbye to large quantities! Help!   19. Hello. So happy you are all here!! I was just sleeved (revision from Lap Band) less than 1 week ago (3/15/18). In December 2016 I had hip replacement surgery. I am a runner and this put me out of commission and thus weight gain (40 lbs since then). With my new "bionic" hip I am ok to run again (Dr. not super happy....but I am). Now with this new surgery, when can I get back to running again? or truly any type of exercise for that matter? I realize that the sleeve is a tool and so want to incorporate my running with it for maximum results. Thank you in advance for any replies and/or suggestions!

  21. I should know this, but can't remember. I had an open hernia repair last Wednesday. The day before surgery I weighed 201. Today I weighed 210. There is NO WAY I could have gained. I'm eating a lot less post surgery. Grant it, I'm not moving much, but this is depressing. This was my second open surgery since February 5 of this year. This is beginning to take a mental and physical toll on this old gal.
  22. I think all of us can understand your fear but consider the fact that at three weeks post-op, you really don't have any basis for assuming anything. A minor weight gain following the surgery is quite common and doesn't mean a thing. So - perhaps the best thing you can do is take a deep breath and really focus on trying to relax and setting your fears aside. Trust the process. Allow your body to find its own way in its own time. Consider focusing all of that energy on continuing to follow the protocol as closely to the letter as you can possibly can. Stay active - even if it's only walking short distances. Drink as much Water as you can. Get as much of your doctor's recommended Protein as you can - protein is crucial for healing and you're doing a lot of healing right now. And I know you don't want to hear it but ... stay away from the scales for at least a week and two would be even better! Instead of being a slave to the scales - consider becoming a slave to a food log. Now is the perfect time to start (if you haven't already). I've been logging for almost two years and the single biggest benefit from a long list of benefits is - peace of mind. Regardless of what the scales tell me, if I KNOW (not think, know) that I'm meeting my calorie goals and eating healthy, the rest will take care of itself. You're gonna love the new you!!

  24. Im 7 weeks today and have lost 30 lbs since surgery. From last Wednesday to today I have lost a total off 1.1 lbs. however from Sunday to today I have gained .7 lb. what's the deal. I'm getting between 500-600 cal., 60 grm, Protein, less than 20 gram carb, less than 10 gram sugar, and around 32 oz of Water....before you sayit. I struggle with my water. Help is this normal
  25. I'm 2 months post-op. Lost 35lbs since surgery and 40 on my own. Two weeks ago, oh happy day, family doc took me off Metformin(diabetes). Also had my first fill that day. I have a bad habit of weighing everyday. So imagine my surprise when one day I gained a pound. Didn't panic, probably just Water weight. Well 2 days after that I was up a total of 3lbs. I am doing everything by the book. Weighing and measuring. 800 to 1,000 calories a meal. Getting all my water and Protein. Exercise 5 days a week. Cardio and weights. The only thing different is I'm of the metformin. Talked to my nurse. She said this could be the culprit and not weigh and not to worry. Well I am worried. I went so far as to have my husband hide the scale. I thought being taken off the medication was a good thing. I'll get it figured out. My question: has anyone else had this problem?
