Vegetarian???

B12 only comes from animal protein, until you're eating meat again (4-8 oz per day) you'll need B12. You'll also need it for life if you're a vegetarian.

I have (or had, as the case may be) a terrible sweet tooth as well. I am thrilled to find that it has decreased TREMENDOUSLY and I'm not even banded yet. In anticipation of my surgery, I stopped drinking diet soda in February and the difference in my sweet cravings was almost immediate. I am also a big carb eater. I am not a vegetarian, but I don't eat beef or pork and tend to rely on carbs for quick, easy meals, especially Breakfast. When I stopped eating a muffin or a bagel for breakfast, I found that my sweet cravings were MUCH less throughout the rest of the day. I found I like the Muscle Milk Lite chocolate Protein drink and I save it for a time in the day that I really want something sweet. It is close enough to chocolate milk that it hits the spot. The Balance bars accomplish the same task for me. Believe me, I know your pain, but I think you might find that some diet changes now will really help tame that sweet tooth and will set you up for better success after you are banded. As is noted here time and time and time again, the band can only help how much and how fast you eat- what you CHOOSE to eat is still up to you. Good luck!! kagead

The B12 shots are easier for some but they will require a copayment to receive, which could be $25-45/month plus the cost of the shot itself at around $10, whereas the sublinguals are $12.00/100 tiny tablets that taste great and dissolve in less than 15 seconds. Personally I prefer the sublinguals and I'm a vegetarian so I'll be taking them the rest of my life.

Forbes: Why high protein diets may be linked to Cancer
summerset replied to Creekimp13's topic in Rants & Raves
1) These are not "my links". 2) This is not about becoming a vegetarian or vegan. AFAIK neither creek nor I are vegetarians or vegans. -
I'm only telling my mother who is going with me and having it done the same day! It's no one business!! People are mean nasty and judgy and I don't have time for that!!! My BMI is on the lower side and I don't want to hear "oh you don't need it" or "just diet and exercise" Uh clearly that's not working for me! Lol It's really a personal choice I feel it's private. I mean do you tell everyone you meet that you are a vegetarian or don't use salt on your food etc.... or feel the need to tell them any other eating routines or health habits you have? I don't see why we would tell everyone anyway. Hi I'm April I had the gastric sleeve..... ???? no one cares, it just opens you up for people to be negative and ugly!

I'd hate to tell you that you absolutely can't drink a latte if it wasn't causing you any problems. Do you find that it's keeping you from losing weight? Or, even if you can fit it into your daily caloric budget (as you technically can with most things in small enough portions), is it taking up room in your daily diet that would be otherwise occupied by more Protein or veggies? In other words, are you getting all of your nutrients and staying within your caloric budget WHILE drinking this latte in the morning? If I were in your situation and I could fit it into my diet healthily, I'd keep drinking the latte if I really enjoyed it over the alternatives. There's common counsel against drinking your calories and it's good. People can easily have several very high-calorie drinks without being conscious of how much they've consumed or feeling full. Also, popular drinks often have a low nutritional/protein status relative to some solid foods in the same calorie range. However, I see the "don't drink your calories" as a general rule and I consciously break the rule twice a day, while observing it for most of my meals. I drink a high-quality and relatively low-calorie Protein shake two times a day. I rarely drink juice or any other drink, unless it is had as a treat. Especially as a vegetarian, the protein shake has made my diet much easier and helps me reach about 100g of protein a day, while staying below 1100 calories. There's no reason (that I'm aware of) that I should take this Protein Drink out of my diet. I'm losing weight more quickly now than I was before I started the protein drink (this is likely in thanks partly to the drink and partly to my stricter diet). In my opinion, you should analyze the drink, yourself, in terms of its nutritional status and find out how many calories you are consuming in a day while the drink is in your diet. Also, you should examine your diet for various nutrient targets that you need to be reaching (e.g. potassium, Vitamin A); this will tell you if you need to take the drink out to make room for other foods that are high in particular nutrients. Good luck deciding! EDIT: I should say that you can find out if you're reaching your nutrient targets with a food tracker. myfitnesspal.com is the one I use to keep track of calories, fats, protein, and various nutrients.

I'm not a gourmet cook, like Judi. (Though, I'd love to have dinner at her house! Yum!) I thought I would share this little thing that has been working for me in hopes of helping others. I'm only a few days away from my two week band-iversary and mushie phase, but I've been hungry all the time, SICK to death of sweats and Soups, and have head hunger for every greasy, cheesy, meaty sinful food on earth! The one thing that saved me is I went to the store yesterday and got a can of Rosarita vegetarian refried Beans. I smoosh them really good, add a little Water and cheddar cheese and pop 'em into the microwave. I then dab on a bit of fat free sour cream and they are the best beans I've had in my life! I'm not hungry or craving anymore! That's it. That's all I wanted to share. They have worked like magic for me

Orbera Balloon booked in next week! Nervous, excited, anxious! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
athenean replied to athenean's topic in Gastric Balloon Forum
Hi all, how are you all doing? I am currently overseas on business but I thought I would check-in with everyone. I am doing great and happy to report I have lost 9kgs (19 pounds!) in just under two weeks! With a low-ish BMI to start with I am completely stunned by the results! I've feeling fantastic and the only thing I can not eat is lettuce! For some reason it just kills my stomach. Discomfort is about a 2, no pain, no nausea, no smelly burps. I am vegetarian though so I think that helps as I don't have any meat sitting on the balloon. I am eating as normal but can not manage more that 600 calories a day. I am having Protein shakes which are helping. But generally I am very happy. I also managed the 14 hour flight to Dubai no problem and am currently in 50 degree heat and managing just fine! Not lightheaded or anything. I have been so blessed and I hope all of you have as positive an experience. -
Post op food- Low carb wraps
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear! I'm going to wait until June to try any Low carb tortillas or bread. I hear chicken can give people problems too. I'm a vegetarian so I haven't found my protein sources to cause any issues. I eat tofu, eggs, cheese, plant based burger meat, chickpea pasta and I'm 34 days post op about. I got really sick eating zuchinnni because they weren't cooked enough and I didn't chew the skins properly. I get being annoyed by the pain. I'm so scared of dumping. Will keep you posted. Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!
BLERDgirl replied to MamaTo3inNH's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I started eating clean as an act of self preservation. My allergies were out of control and I spent more time fighting and recuperating from allergy attacks than out and enjoying life. I also became a fat vegetarian. It's taken me a long time but I follow really basic rules: Bring a magnifying glass with you to the market Anything that says,'light, fat free, diet' or similar is either lying or fake and heavily processed. Try to buy foods that have 10 ingredients or less and/or do not require a science degree to understand the ingredients. Avoid most foods that come in a box or a can. Frozen foods with no additives are your friend. -
@@HappyinHollywood Thanks. I always have to check because stevia isn't an artificial sweetener. It's from the stevia plant. It tends to show up in a lot of vegan and vegetarian Protein powders. Unfortunately I am allergic to stevia.

High Protein - Low Fat SOLID Foods!
GayleTX replied to kim2bhealthy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I eat a lot of turkey chili w/beans, vegetarian refried beans, low fat cottage cheese....all good protein but not much fat. -
I'm a vegetarian and I don't drink a lot of dairy. The shakes the doc wanted me to drink where based on whey (dairy) protein. I actually got thrush (yeast infection) from the shakes. Look in the mirror, do you have a whitish film on your tongue? If not, most likely not thrush. May just be pre-surgery stress. Hope you feel better

Anyone else worried about sleeve stretch?
lml32937 replied to KCPOTPIE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have had sugar, I have had carbs, I am not going to die from it. I am not, have never been and dont obsess about my sleeve stretching. I am physically not able to eat more than 8- 1o bites of food at a time- I know this and if I attempt to I will vomit and feel miserable. Knowing this I know my limits and what I should, shouldnt have and what is worth it if i do over indulge. I enjoy eating whatever I want and have learned that moderation is best and those 8- 10 bites that I can get in 3-4 x a day are going to be the best I can get- I'm not going to wast them on stupid things like chips, cookies etc... things that I have no plan on returing to in my life EVER... I have since become a vegetarian dnd don't eat the "meat' protein some other physicians are throwing down everyone's throats as being normal. I get my fill from fruits, veggies, greens, legumes etc. and feel wonderful. I dont feel deprived or that I have ever over eaten. Although the possibility of "sleeve stretching" is real because the stomach is a muscle- Unless a person is into utter personal sabotage and willing to go through hell to get there I cannot imagine it being done on purpose... you make a mistake you get up dust off your britches and get back on the horse and ride again.. hard lesson to learn but it has to be learned... -
There is a whole section of the forum dedicated to vegan/vegetarian, with over 1500 posts. Check it out. I am vegan and follow a Whole Food Plant Based eating plan. I started this about a year after surgery, and have never felt better. Protein supplements are necessary immediately after surgery until you can get at least 60 grams of protein from normal food. I've used Orgain shakes and Garden of Life powder. I think there are a LOT of good recipes in the Forks over Knives magazines that come out quarterly. The fall issue featuring Comfort Foods was excellent. Even if I tweak the recipe a bit to my own spice preferences, they give me great ideas and a starting place for a meal. I just made a really yummy jackfruit chowder and added some cannellini beans and corn to up the protein a bit. Anyway, I get great ideas from the mags and my family likes them, too. PS: AnaBar, almond mild doesn't really have much protein. Can you switch to soy or pea based milk like Silk or Ripple?

Unjury is very good. I personally like the Atkins shakes. Pricy but easy to take to work. I only had to do liquids for a week and for 24 hours after each fill. Try the Unjury sampler. The chicken broth (vegetarian btw) is very good and a nice change from the sweet shakes.

Getting thinner, I do not want this to sound like I am lecturing but, dear you need to eat. Not eating does not fix your weight, it could cause more severe issues. The sleeve is a tool to help you -just not eating is scary unless there is something medically going on? If not, why not try going back to basics and moving forward slowly? Start with Protein shakes, scrambled eggs, refried Beans, split pea Soup and basically mushies. Then progress to lean meats like deli sliced turkey, then eventually more dense protein like rotisserie chicken, without skin. It is about learning and eating right for your health. If you are not comfortable, please contact counselor and nutritionist for assistance. We want you to be well. Many on this forum have great suggestions, Irene, Lil Misdiva, has a basics bootcamp and always offers great advise. Susan, Lissa, Feedyoureye (if you are vegetarian), and many more are here and they help folks with their personal experience and knowledge. Please take care of you, sip and get your protein/food on board. Don't want to see you back in hospital, want to see you prosper in your life journey. Sandy

How do you know if your band slipped
jaylow replied to jaylow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thanks for the info. I only have a slight nagging pain on my left side. I am sticking to liquids but they go down no problem. Hopefully, i'm ok. I think I'm sticking to fish and vegetarian life style for a bit. -
Any vegetarians out there?
califmomto4 replied to shawna29's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I mostly eat fish as well, chicken occasionally. (my entire life...dont like pork or red meat) Someone asked this question in my class, the nutritionist said it would be difficult to meet your nutritional requirements as a vegetarian because your pouch cannot fit the quantity of tofu (for example) that would be required to meet your Protein requirements. -
I was a pesciterian for two years, full vegetarian for a year and back to pescitarian for a year. It is difficult to eat the right things and you end up eating a lot of carbs. I could not stay healthy and soy products can alter your hormones.

High Protein - Low Fat SOLID Foods!
Sunta replied to kim2bhealthy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I love vegetarian meats like chicken nuggets, fake meat crumbles, etc. Low, low fat, low calories, and very high protein. If I make veggie chili with "Quorn" brand fake meat crumbles, no one can tell the difference between that and real beef. It's great! These veggie meats are also nice and soft and go down beautifully.
