I have started the approvals for weight loss surgery and, like everyone else, I am filled with nerves and excitement! I love flowers, especially orchids, and this morning I want to share this picture and my thought with all of you. This orchid is not beautiful today, but it is filled with potential! It cannot rush the process of blooming because the process takes time to work correctly. The best things in life take time and we must (try) to enjoy the anticipation and make the most of the time we are waiting, the period of HOPE. Beauty (health and wellness for us) is coming! Sleep Apnea
QueenOfTheTamazons replied to Michelle50's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If the surgeon can do the referral then go for it. I started the sleep apnea process before the weight loss surgery process so my primary care referred me. If you have sleep apnea the machine will make you feel so much better. I don't wake with headaches anymore , or fall asleep the minute the lights turn off while watching TV. I don't snore at all anymore but the machine does have white noise. Most importantly I'm not tired during the day and I don't wake up gasping like somebody punched me in the chest. -
I am 65 yrs. old and weigh 375. Anyone in that bracket? The doctor said I need this to help alleviate other serious problems. He said I could die w/o the weight loss. Am I too old? I haven't seen a surgeon yet because my primary just told me. Any words of wisdom?

CHF is really frightening. I remember my grandmother dealing with the end stages of both COPD and CHF. I was never close to her but her fear and turmoil was written all over her face. My grandmother was not overweight but she smoked all of her life - Marlboros. With significant weight loss, it may be possible to reverse the CHF. Either way, I am wishing you the best. I truly believe you've made a good decision.

I take biotin. I know it's in the daily vitamins... but I just wanted to be extra careful! I was banded on 11/22/10 and I have thick hair. Nothing has changed yet. Good luck!!
-
No, I don't think they will. The 3 or 6 month diet required does not affect your eligibility. They will always go by the weight you recorded at your first visit. However, they do want to see that you are committed to a healthier lifestyle and to weight loss. I would really try not to gain a lot of weight during your supervised diet.

After starting my weight loss surgery journey back in April 2014, and having my insurance company merge with another one, 3 months later, tell me I had to wait another 3 months before they would even look at an authorization for surgery, the time has come.. my surgery has been scheduled fro December 3, 2014!! FINALLY!

I was banded on the 9th. Things are going well although I admit to craving my families dinner and having to stop myself from taking a bite. I have very little pain, just a little soreness. Today I walked 2 miles. It felt good. I am determined to lose this weight and keep it off for good. But I realize it's a marathon and not a sprint. I have a friend who had the gastric sleeve procedure in April, she has already lost 60 LBS. She has a lot of difficulty eating and some dumping syndrome. So the slow pace of the band is obviously better on our bodies. Good Luck! Rhonda url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/woap9q6/] [/url]

I know this is a really strange thing to ask....but I am embarrassed to ask anyone else. I have been researching and have decided on VSG (my first appt with the surgeon is 9/20)....and I feel like since I have made this decision I am so happy and excited for a real chance to succeed this time with weight loss....BUT I also feel like since I made the decision I can't stop eating. I feel like I eat all the time and just stuff myself. Is this just my head "hoarding" food?? I feel like an idiot. I would appreciate any feedback.

Weight gain
stellabell replied to adida.franklin@yahoo.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To control your weight, you can try to use avocado. Because A research devided participants into two groups. The first consumed a meal with avocados while in the meal of the other group, there was no avocado. Researchers started to pose questions about satiety and hunger to both groups. The first group who consumed avocados was less eager for foods by 28 percent in the 5-hour period. Moreover, the high content of fiber and low amount of carbs in avocados contribute to weight loss as well Source: https://wikihomenutrition.com/avocados-health-benefits/#7_Weight_Loss -
I had my surgery done on Friday, April 22nd at Kaiser West Los Angeles by Dr. Benjamin Kim. So far I have had a wonderful exprience. The nurses and the baratric team was awesome. I got to come home on Saturday and I know I shouldn't have but I went to my son's All-Star basketball game. I'm not in too much pain, only when I move, if I'm still I'm okay. Have been able to keep all liquids and Jello down, no nausea or throwing up..TYJ. Trying to relax is really hard for me, but I'm trying. So far I'm glad I had it done. Down 4lbs.

BCBS publishes their guidelines online. You can look it up. For me, my BMI had to be above 40 or 35 with co-morbidities. I also had to do 6 months of weight loss with my doctor. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App

Hello not sure where to start
Progressive1 replied to Lovy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Lovy, Welcome to LBT. This is a really good place for information and support. I know the process can seem long and tedious, but I guess they have a good reason for making us jump through all their hoops. I think EricaLyn was right on the money with what she said. My emphasis would be on exercise. Joining a gym worked best for me. Working out did two things for me. First, it made the surgery so much easier. I didn't need pain meds afterwards, and I had so much energy that I could have walked home from the hospital. I'm not exaggerating. Second, in addition to the weight loss and appetite loss, my bloodwork became normal. I had been struggling with high blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL (good) cholesterol, high LDL (bad) cholesterol, and other things. I started out with 20 minutes on a treadmill 3 times a week in January. By my surgery date in April, I was doing an hour on the treadmill plus weight training 4 days a week. It was like a miracle. Now I'm hooked. I've gone from being a couch potato to being a gym junkie. Anyways, good for you for what you're doing. I hope the wait is tolerable for you. Good luck, and let us know what's happening, ok? -
Surgery Date Set and I'm excited and terrified.
losingtheselumps replied to fancypants67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@fancypants67 In January of 2015, I went for my first consultation for WLS. I had signed up and said I was gonna go through with it. Then, I backed out because I thought "I can do this on my own." I wasn't ready to give in.... Fast forward to December of 2015 and I hadn't lost one pound, hell I probably gained 5 pounds... I decided enough was enough, found a new doctor that I LOVE, and made the commitment this January. I was just sleeved 8 days ago and I'm so happy that I did. I really regret NOT going through with it back in 2015 because I could have been at my goal by now! I just wasn't ready. It's normal to feel that way, but you aren't quitting. You are admitting that you need help. This tool will help you get where you need to be to be healthy. Believe me, you aren't "throwing in the towel", because you still have to work at it. You still have to put effort into your weight loss, you will just have a tool to help you get it done a little easier:) -
Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just attended my first informational seminar. I've been reading some posts on here and I have a question. Why does your doctor want you to lose weight before surgery?

Pre-Surgery Weight Loss
PattyGirl66 replied to newlifenow335's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was told to lose between 40-50 pounds before surgery. Every surgeon is different, and as you can see I did not make it to that. When I saw him my last visit, he said just keep trying 'harder'. I have another month, and I am not stressing over it honestly, his partner who will be assisting him said i am doing fantastic on my weight loss so far. Go figure!! -
Very excited for my surgery on Thursday! Received some bad news today ..... My work fired me because I choose to have this surgery and will be off work. Sad thing is I worked at this place for 13 years! I will be a better and healthier person after this surgery so it's their loss! Screw them!

Freaking out about hairloss

Im scheduled to be sleeved in November. Would it help my hair to start taking Biotin now. What about extra protein getting built up in the body. Can the body do that? -
Freaking out about hairloss
earnestclark replied to mistymc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve in March 2014 and have lost 62 lbs. I have always had excessively thick hair and it was my best feature. I have lost 2/3 of it in the past month. Everytime I wash my hair it looks like a small rodent has died in my shower. I just saw my doctor last week and all my labs are very good. I get enough Protein, Vitamins, and Water. I did lose weight fast so that may be the problem. I'm going to do the Biotin, Super B Complex, and Acai juice in hopes my hair will grow back. -
Today was my first day of my 90 day weight loss management! I met with the PA and the surgeon and went over a food plan. So excited!! Even though I'm only required to lose 12 lbs I'm going to try for at least 30lbs for surgery. Went to costco stocked up on good healthy food and Protein bars they recommended went home and meal prepped for the week, and now I feel like im good to go. Taking it one day at a time Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Freaking out about hairloss
Beth Pets replied to mistymc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a health crisis 5 years ago and not only did I lose handfuls of hair, but it and my nails stopped growing for months. It was so weird not to have to file my fingernails. Like you, I have fine hair so it was pretty shocking. Especially since it was unexpected. It took almost 6 months for my system to "start up" again and a while longer for my hair to get back to normal. I'm not looking forward to it happening again but at least I'm prepared and I know it will grow back. -

Weight loss before the surgery
54Shirley replied to lindsayma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 45 lbs before surgery. My surgeon then tells me that I have a goal for you in weight loss. So what if I didn't make it? He said then I wouldn't perform surgery on you! So I ask what is the goal (FIGUREING I MUST HAVE MADE IT!) 50 lbs ! But your close, so I guess you tried. Boy I could have kicked him, because he never told me about this Goal.... Doctors !!!!! -
Hi All! Once you were cleared to exercise what work outs did you find helpful that had the most weight loss? I'm thinking about getting a personal trainer but not sure about the cost especially if it's something I can do. Any suggestions?

Today Is A Struggle...
DaBlockzPRbabii replied to alisonmagill's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes! theres some days that i miss certain foods that i use to be able to eat that now i cant eat because they get stuck. As you progress further in your journey you will kind of get a feel for what you can and cant tolerate. Honestly im glad i cant eat bread and other high carb products after all they are what helped make me over weight! you do feel like you suffer a great deal of loss once you start getting filled and not feeling so hungry it will pass best of luck to you and just try to keep doing what your doing.
