  1. The hormone question is still open, and you can find a bunch of info here: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/349114-new-study-about-the-long-term-effectiveness-of-the-sleeve/ I went with the sleeve I was terrified of the dumping issues with the bypass, was leaning toward lap-band but saw the long term costs with adjustments. Some have done very well with the band, but wasn't for me. Some things to consider: Are you taking maintenance drugs? Some don't do well. Ambien no longer works for me. Had to switch from ER meds to breaking up pills. Have you worked through food issues? What is your relationship with alcohol? Do you have a partner? It will change your relationship status. Big issues to discuss in advance. But the long term - you have an 80% chance to change your life significantly by keeping 70% of your current weight off for the next five years with WLS. Less than 2% with the best behavioral modification programs. It's not a guarantee, it's a tool.
  2. Oh I just thought of a negative - I hate it when you get stuck while you're out, and find you need a toilet quick smart to PB, and your mouth is filling up with saliva like crazy, and you can't get there fast enough. It's happened to me twice - once I didn't quite make it to the toilet. Suffice to say - embarrasing! Another negative (or maybe it's a positive) - if I am getting 'full' my nose starts to drip. Anyone who's close to me sees me start to sniff and they all look at me like 'ok, stop eating NOW'. Oh and I can't get falling down drunk coz trust me, you don't want to get alcoholic poisoning with the band. Puking from the bottom of your tummy is NOT fun. It can lead to needing an emergency unfill. Again, not sure that's not really a positive though...

    Alcohol a year after bypass

My surgeon told me no alcohol for two years, and then only when I had no need to drive. Apparently, a bypass makes you capable of exceeding the legal limit with

Did your Doc require a pre-op diet?

yes there were 9 of us in the pre op class for Drs Smith and Ferrara. we were told if we had drank a soda that day that is was our last. we were told to do high protein (according to our individual nutrition guidelines) lean meats, eggs, chez, etc, that we could eat all veggies except corn, peas, beans and potatoes, nothing deep fried, no sweets, no alcohol, no bread of any sort (sliced, tortillas, bagels, chips, etc) and at least 64 oz of water a day but we could drink as much non carbonated, sugar free drinks that we wanted. also we could not have any fruits (juices, whole, or otherwise). i started a week earlier because i knew we would be required to do it. i followed my dietician's instructions for high protein, no carbs and lost a total of 14 lbs in 3 weeks but i was also walking a mile 3 times a week which doesn't seem like much but i've had 3 knee surgeries (1 on the left and 3 of the right, 2 of them back to back in less than one year on the right) so for me at my weight that is a good bit of effort. my surgery date is this tuesday oct 7th and i'm so excited!

    Dumping syndrome! Help!

You can dump from sugar free foods sometimes because they use sugar alcohols in place which will make you dump just like sugar if you are prone to dumping. I found that out one night with sugar-free Italian ice :/

So it hits me...... No Beer!

Well, I do not drink at all, but as far as never having beer again ... I don't believe VSG is a death sentence to enjoying an occasional brew. My Dr told me no alcohol for the first 6 months, and you'll read postings on here from folks saying they are just empty calories. Well, if we made a list of all the foods we still do eat which are empty calories, I would need a larger monitor to see them all. Much larger. Then, of course, there is the carbonation factor. Going on 3 years out, I enjoy the occasional root beer or a few sips of Sprite. The carbonation definitely restricts the size of gulps I can take, but I still enjoy them. But, back in the day when I did drink, as I recall, a nice porter or stout didn't have the carbonation of the lagers. I would think a Guinness on occasion would fill the need. I'm sure @@Madam Reverie would agree.

I have failed my band - SUPPORT GROUP

Hi Crzytchr, I think you are on to something!!! There is alcohol addiction in my family as well, and I guess I chose food as my drug of choice!!! Also, thank you for the encouragement - I sincerely appreciate it. I see that you have already had so much success in such a short period of time. What is your secret??? Today was a GREAT day - well, parts of it, at least. Breakfast went well - did you Kashi cereal. For lunch, I had to take my team out to Celebrate one of our birthdays. Birthday girl chose MEXICAN food of all - everything is fried or in cheese, which makes it sooo good. I went with a Grilled Mahi Mahi and asked them to keep out the sauce. It felt like there was butter or some oil on it, but at least I didnt over-indulge. I also stayed away from desert. I LOVE THE BAND. I went to see my surgeon today and he told me that with my port revision, they took out ALL the saline and only put back .25cc. I cant believe I have restriction with so little, yet I went through a whole year and a half at almost full, able to eat anything. THIS BAND HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN...or is it that I now have a new mind? a new outlook??? Another major accomplishment today - I went to tae kwon do - my first day - boy, was that a WORKOUT - I can tell my legs will be sore tomorrow. I felt LIGHT-HEADED A FEW TIMES - I wonder WHY???? Fellow strugglers - How was your day today? Any successes? any failures you want to turn around?? what are your goals for December? Mine are: (I know I say them everytime - but there is something about repeating them all the time - like a mantra.) -Eat no more than 1500 calories a day -Write everything I eat on fitday and my journal -Measure any food that is not-pre-packaged
  8. Hola all I am in the medical field and everyone knows. I am also an alcoholic sober for 10 years and everyone knows that too. I tell people because I need the fishbowl for both my alcohol and my eating. When people ask I get pissed but thats just because I am getting into old behavior. I get over it and start eating right. I was embarassed at first because I too felt " easy way out" until I really got informed about the procdure. This is NOT easy!!!! This is still about changing behavior and getting to the core of the compulsion. Anyway ... one day at a time TODAY I did not overeat. Elda Good luck
  9. Alcohol, shopping, gambling, drugs, promiscuous sex, even exercise.... Food addiction is tough and sneaky and loves to change forms. One of the reasons, IMO, getting mental health support lined up before surgery is so important. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes to you.
  10. Hell No! I have zero cravings for any food, which has to do with 95% of hormone telling your brain to eat is removed with bottom of stomach, there is no dumping, pouch will not stretch, but your esophagus will lose the feeling for having food in it if you overeat. And if you overeat too much you will have to throw up. But you won't get the sitting on the toilet. Alcohol won't make you drunk on 1 drink, and absorption is so much better. No way, sleeve was only choice I would ever make

    Intimacy

    1) I am a huge (no pun intended) Star Trek fan, too. My husband and I gave each other the Vulcan Salute when we married. 2) I've been married to my (for lack of a better phrase) soul-mate for 18 years on August 11th. We enjoy an active and loving relationship. He doesn't keep his hands off me now--and he's already talking about "elevator" sex when I've lost weight. Oy vey. I refer to my husband as my "crash test dummy" sometimes. Oh, honey! Will this work? Now, hold that position...I need to capture it in my mind and translate it onto paper! 3) I write romance novels. I write steamy, spicy, happily-ever-after and even a few happy-for-now novels. I once received an email from a reader saying that reading my book aloud as a couple was the best foreplay they'd had in years. Cough! I have older relatives who call me the "Porno Queen." Grrrr. I do not write porno. I do write bodice-rippers and crotch-burners, but there's a huge difference between romance novels and interent porn! HUGE! I have some very strong opinions about porno addiction, to wit: It broke up my cousin's 17 year marriage. It removes a level of intimacy in marriage (or bonded couples), and leaves them both unsatisfied. It desensitizes and anesthetizes. It can be a gateway drug to a seemy, smarmy underbelly of images that are both illegal and immoral--not just sexually titilating. It is a serious addiction. If you know someone with an addiction, talk to them about getting help. Alcohol, drugs, gambling, whatever. Pray, talk, point them in a direction where they can learn to overcome their addictions and regain their lives. I truly want all women to know love; to know the joys of intimacy and even if it's achieved alone, the release of climax. If, for any reason, you are not finding satisfaction in your life with your partner, please discuss it, pray on it, go seek medical advice. Loving relations are too wonderful to dismiss! I don't usually discuss this kind of thing on forums, so if I've offended anyone, I apologize. Darr

I have failed my band - SUPPORT GROUP

Hello All- As you can see from my stats- not very impressive - no one would be asking me to be the postergirl for the lapband. I did not get enough fills early in the process, but believe that I may actually be approaching my sweet spot soon. I have come to realize a few things and wonder if anyone can relate... I became depressed a few months after surgery when it did not fix everything. Now, I am smart enough to know that it wouldn't, but, it still happened. As a result, I found myself drinking alcohol becuase I could and as a way of numbing myself. Alcohol passes just fine through the band and has oodles of calories. So do many other things that I should know better than to eat (ice cream, chocolate, etc) So, I faced all of this and stopped the antidepressants (yeah, I think they were messing me up more than helping me) and although, I swore that I would never do this again, walked in to a Weight Watchers week one meeting. Yep - accountability - just like at the start of the band process. I really never thought I would have to do this again, but the band does not fix everything - it really is just a tool.

    Cross Addiction

I have the occasional alcoholic beverage but no more often than before I was banded. My only addiction is food so I can't really help you out with the cross addiction. I do know that the detox places will help you IF you really want the help. If you don't really want the help, they are not going to work. I say this, not to be mean, but this comes from the wife of a recovering addict. Hubby's been clean for 14 years. You have to want to change. The results match the efforts. Good luck to you and I wish you much success in this.

This is why I'm dying for a soda

DeLarla What do your co workers look like? Sounds like they might have a weight problem!!!! As we say in AA and NA....one is NEVER enough. Good luck, I know how hard it is to give up something you love. I had to give up pain pills, then alcohol, pot and cigarettes through the years. Clean and sober for 81/2 years now, I still can get addicted to potatoes and ice cream, etc etc etc.
  15. Have to admit my first thought was lactose intolerance, which can occur after surgery but you said you’re dairy free. My second thought was artificial sweeteners - many, especially the sugar alcohol ones can cause gastric distress like you described. https://www.livestrong.com/article/510270-can-artificial-sweetners-upset-your-stomach/ But whatever the cause, I agree with the others, contact your surgeon as soon as you can.

    Drinking alcohol again????

I was told to avoid alcohol for a year. Also, if you haven't already been warned everyone should've been. We are at higher risk of becoming alcoholics after surgery than before and I have seen it where I work. It's one reason I didn't immediately choose to have the surgery. I've seen several persons with this problem at my place of employment. So, be careful and follow your medical team's advice.

    Drinking after VSG

I would certainly contact your surgeon. It sounds like you may have ended up with a case of gastritis from the alcohol irritating your stomach lining. Since we don't have much stomach lining left, it's not hard to make it angry. They should be able to prescribe strong antacids and anti-emetics to get you back on track. Feel better!
  22. I keep seeing folks talking about drinking soda on the chat board, & it worries me. I don't want to see anyone damage their pouch, so I thought I would bump this thread up to the top again. Please see the first post to get an explanation as to why alcohol & carbonated drinks can be harmful to you.
  23. I gave up unhealthy food & beverage favorites months before surgery. It was hard to give up sugar, processed food, bread, soda, and alcohol but I wanted to make a lasting change and to not go through "detox" and have to deal with cravings right after surgery. This approach worked well for me and I'd recommend others consider doing the same to prepare for your new lifestyle ahead of time.

    Is the lap band healthy?

Boy, Heather! You have been through the grinder with your band. But my experiences in observing which wls surgery is the most effective don't match yours. Mine more closely match what all the medical research says. A group of us--about 40-50 wls patients--got together a couple of years ago. Someone asked, "Which ones had the DS?" I--inadvertantly, because I was still banded--said, "Just look around...it's the skinny bitches." And it was. I've been researching wls since about the time you were banded and I haven't met anyone--not one person--who had a DS and was unhappy with the way the surgery had performed. I *DID* encounter a person with a drug and alcohol problem who returned to drugs and alcohol and regained about 50 pounds, but even she didn't regain everything. OTOH, many of the banded people I know have had to have revisions and many are still MO, even after years of trying to make the band work for them. I really think that, especially for someone who has had all the problems you have had, your success is really outside the normal range of results. But bravo to you for achieving it! Sue

    Transfering to alcohol?

I was an Addict (alcohol and Sedatives) BEFORE the lapband. After about 2 years of recovery, I got banded. I use "The Work", www.thework.com, to deal with the thinking that leads to the emotion that leads to the (Food, Alcohol, whatever!). It ALWAYS starts with a thought. I have given up alcohol, drugs and cigarettes using The WORK (IT'S EASY AND ITS FREE) and use it in conjunction with my band - I have never been so at peace in my life. Give it a try. Contact me and I can send you a cd, too. No cost - i just love sharing this remarkable tool that helps me so much!
