  1. I am proud to report I didn't not cheat at all. No alcohol or food!
  2. My surgeon has NO requirements for a pre-op diet. None. All I have to do is not eat solids after midnight the night prior to the procedure. Don't beat yourself up, Kelly--after all, listening to the judging/angry/"you're-not-worthy" voices in our heads is WHY some of us are in the predicament we're in. I don't know about anyone else, but a lot of my eating is self-medication against negativity. Cheering myself up with yummy Snacks. Eating to avoid dealing with my emotions, then feeling rotten about what I ate, giving up on myself--since it MUST be all-or-nothing to succeed, right?--and starting the vicious cycle all over again. Eat poorly, hate what I did to my body by eating poorly, punish myself with a mental lecture about being worthless, do a 180 and say "SCREW THIS IMMA EAT WHAT I WANT", eat poorly again. Lather, rinse, repeat. (Of course, the whole process above doesn't WORK and it doesn't make logical sense to stay in that cycle, but that never stopped an alcoholic from looking for answers at the bottom of a bottle of whisky. I preferred to search my way to both ends of a brownie pan or a bag of peanut M&M's.) So, yeah. Don't add your voice or anyone else's to the negative chorus of "this will not work for you if you can't stick to liquids". Right now, it's optional. For a lot of obese people with food addictions, all the good intentions in the world just won't get the job done when it's optional. We make excuses, we sabotage ourselves, we make bad food choices. It's what we DO. It's why we're choosing to be sleeved--to take the choice out of our hands (and stomachs). You're gonna be okay. You CAN do this. Your sleeve is going to make it possible, and you're going to be a success. Hang tough, girlie.
  3. Erik, I don't know your age, (I'm 55), but I know where you're coming from. Although I do weigh 400, my healthy weight (muscle mass/fat percentage) is around 250 to 270. Oh I forgot I'm 5'9 as well. Obviously I need surgery, but as far as yourself, I can see the concern. When u say belly, are you talking fat? I'm guessing u are. As far as eating habits, do u eat clean? Alcohol use? I know what the charts say, we shouldn't weigh over 183, I believe. As far as BMI, you know it doesn't take muscle mass into account. Are u self paying? If not, and insurance is paying, then obviously they're in agreement. I'm guessing you've done the research on the surgery. Only you can decide, it's your body. Do you yo yo a lot? You will lose weight, so it's a positive move. I do hope you make the right decision for yourself, and your journey. Keep me posted. Good Luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Advice ! 4 Weeks Post Op

Thank you all so much got on scales today and again havent lost so just busted out on the running machine vibro plate and weights !!! i am determined for it to come of !!! your right i prob need more Protein but not sure how to get it at the min im on puree stage up until weds i lost a stone pre op and a stone and a half (21lb) since the 25th january ... i feel really down with stepping on the scales and not losing weight i guess i shouldnt weigh every day like im doing at the min ?? do you guys weigh once a week or step on the scaled quite frequently ?? I think when your told that you will lose between 5-8 lb a week there is a great expectation from people i dont live with my mum but she is on my back and thinks im doing some thing wrong ??? must admit i do find it hard when my partner is eating all the food i used to love in the house but thats the price i pay i guess - also i ahve had a few glasses of wine with friends on 2 occasions and im sure this is contributing to the lack of weight loss (lesson learnt need to cut out alcohol for a while) You are all doing so great so a big well done from me and thanks so much for the response !! it is very much appreciated xxxx

    Vegas & Alcohol

You will be fine.... I had wine about 8 wks post op and have wine a few times a week. I have not ventured to any other alcohol yet. Just be careful with your first drink, maybe try something at home first to see how you handle it.
  6. CrazyJaney

    Oh, do please shut up!

No words sting worse to the ear of an alcoholic than the words of a "sober, recovering" alcoholic. But, I do think most come here for "support" and are in varying stages of recovery. At least on the internet you can take what you want and leave the rest. Some people have super steely constitutions. Some are weak. We all have stuff to learn from one another. But I get your original post. It's the Facebook friend who ONLY posts her EVERY woe. How can someone be truly that miserable???? The ones who do that (from my experience) usually create their own misery. Still, I think leadership means you foster hope in others. There is some "owned" responsibility to help others. Even if they are mind-boggling ridunculous. I almost spit out my coffee laughing at the "not to Scottland" response! Lolololol
  7. I know this probably seems ridiculous - and I'm really just inquiring if anyone did this??! I have a vacation in Montauk less than a week before my surgery - can I have a few drinks while on my pre-surg diet? My dr. Said it won't really hurt but I shouldn't. ... If I can't I won't - but I'm just wondering! Trust me I've been more than compliant and plan to continue to be... But I really want to enjoy my vacation and its bad enough I'll be on my pre-op diet! Lol

    Heartbroken

Leave now. Do not pass "go." Do not collect two hundred dollars. Or you will go directly to jail. Men who abuse drugs and alcohol do not respect themselves much less anyone else. Their God is the drug and their lifestyle revolves around the worshiping of same. I believe I gave my ex-husband the choice: Marijuana or me. Go to treatment or our marriage is over. He chose drugs over me. I'm rather happy with that decision as my second marriage is a blessing--but damn, girl. Get out while you still can.

    wine at 6 weeks anyone?

Had a really shitty week - stated off well by losing 7 lbs in a week. Then heard my stepmother died after a 4 week battle. Finally finished off by my ex-wife falling off a chair last night putting up decorations & begging me to take her to the hospital. so, I had a few drinks tonight ...... well, it turned into more than a bottle of wine ..... my doc advised me 12 months before having alcohol. I'm 6 months post-op

    wine at 6 weeks anyone?

I was told it was a no go for six months and that my doc advises no more than a glass, preferably less. Keep in mind that alcohol will also dehydrate you and that's one of the last things we want.
  11. VST is a forum for vertical sleeve weight loss surgery support. Those who have had the surgery, and those who are family, friends, and supporters of them are also welcome to come here, participate, learn, educate and be educated. Often, those who have never experienced being morbidly obese truly don't understand what it means to those of us who are, or what we have been through, both physically and mentally. They tend to be more sympathetic to the person who has an addiction to alcohol, smoking, or drugs. But the difference is, nobody needs alcohol, drugs or cigarettes to live, but we do need food to live. And, that alone makes our struggle that much harder. Momto6ix, in order for Rick to succeed, you need to be on his side, loving him and supporting him 100% of the way. I do applaud you for asking what foods are best to make for the party, and being sympathetic to his needs. Please refer to our food and nutrition forums at http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/forum/7-food-nutrition/ for some great ideas on what you can cook and he can eat. He is going through a lot of changes right now, physically and emotionally. If, at this juncture in his journey he doesn't feel ready to face certain situations, then respect that and support him. He has to learn how to handle the different situations he is going to encounter in the future, and he will. But right now, he is still new to all of this. Allow him the time he needs to adjust to changing his eating habits, learning to exercise, dealing with the changes his body is going through, etc. Also, keep in mind when your body is going through such drastic changes, you also have a lot of crazy hormonal/chemical changes going on. Eventually, it will all level out. He will learn how to deal with social situations where food is involved and he will be ready to start going out and living life again. Just don't expect it to all happen overnight. Lastly, everyone please remember our forum rules, primarily the one which refers to everyone being respectful of one another. We are all here to both learn and educate. The attacks are unnecessary.
  12. I eat a 4oz steak all the time.. after the first 2 months and I was cleared. Might not finish it, but that's a different story. Beer is carbonated and has alcohol, so should be off menu for at least 6 months to a year. After that it's a question of whether you still like it, or whether it likes you. I eat sweets on special occasions, but mostly they don't taste as good. In general you'll be able to eat anything.. but whether you can tolerate it, like it, or should eat it.. those are different questions.

Health Care is not as bad as some may think

Universal health care is not free health care. The cost is covered in the tax structure. It is simply cheaper because big business is edited out of the equation and it does allow medical personnel more options when treating their patients as they are not constrained by the dollar and cents factor which the business enviroment will inevitably impose. It seems to me that the poor are covered by free clinics paid for by your tax system and the rich can pay for whatever they want with respect to their medical treatment. It is the middle class and the working class who are vulnerable to the high costs of private medical coverage and to being dropped by these same insurers when the costs of treating their illnesses become unattractive for their insurers. This is what we read about your system of health care. I am inclined to agree with you that we do live in a society of entitlement; these days it certainly seems that everyone likes to think of themselves as a victim. This is quite different from the attitude of my parents, people who survived the Second World War and who believed in standing up on your own hind two feet and dealing with the world with dignity and humour. Nevertheless, I am one of those people who do find the results of research and, yes, even anecdotal evidence to be of value when attempting to gain a better understanding of a situation. I wonder whether you have become hardened because of the people whom you see daily in your free clinic. I suspect that you are seeing the very poor and these people are much less likely or even capable of taking the same care of themselves in the same way that the better educated and more affluent folks are. For one thing it takes a certain amount of stability, cash, and education to eat healthily, to cut out those carbs and eat fresh vegetables and quality protein, to feel hopeful enough about yourself and your life to want to give up alcohol, drugs, and smokes, to join a gym, take up jogging, to have any sort of motivation or interest at all in fact. If this is the case, then you are seeing people at less than their best and this is bound to leave you feeling cynical. I have met cops who suffer from much the same thing; they spend much of their waking lives dealing with people who are behaving badly....

    Cross addiction

I know it’s so, so common, especially for Bariatric patients and alcohol. I drink a glass or two of wine a night most nights but that was normal for me before and I don’t think it’s excessive. I definitely don’t drink to get drunk and rarely even get tipsy. But I used to be only a social smoker and I am now up to a pack a week 😕 I think it’s called addiction transferance? I want to cut back.

    Pooping all the time now!

Well first of all congrats on the 7 yrs clean! I too am a recovering addict....coke and alcohol. I have been clean now for over 20 years. Good luck with everything. Hopefully with the reduction of the meds it will help you.

    Coffee post VSG

My surgeon said no caffeine, period, as sleeve patients are now at a greater risk of a GI bleed. I drink decaffeinated coffee, and did that before surgery. (He also said no alcohol, period -- not an issue for me as I don't drink anyway).

First Time Drinking Alcohol Post Op

I'm trying to understand why wine would be a problem or anything under 7%. They gave me hydrcodone and it has 7% alcohol.

First Time Drinking Alcohol Post Op

Alcohol will "feel" different after surgery for most of us in one way or another. I'm one of the ones who found it hit a lot harder than pre-surgery. I also discovered the hard way that it makes it almost impossible to tell how much is actually IN your stomach at a given time--it seems to make things relax to the point that my usual "I'm full" signals don't work very well... I'll leave the rest to your imagination, but it was not pretty and I didn't even get to enjoy a buzz!! LOL As with all things post-sleeve, caution and paying attention to your body are the keys--only problem is that it's difficult to do that with the alcohol working in you. :-) Slow is your best bet.

You were allowed to have alcohol 12 days after your surgery?

    February/March 2014 sleevers

Hi Sherry, we've been daydreaming about food. And alcohol.
  21. Alcohol. When are we able to drink again...obviously I am not talking about getting drunk, but what about a casual drink? I was banded a week ago and I know this is way too soon, but I am a single gal who likes to go out (which probably got me here in the first place, bars and greasy bar food!) and I was curious to find out how long people waited to try a drink again. First Fill Experiences For The Mayo BANDitos

Hello Everyone, GREAT Thread! I was banded May 21,09. I had my first fill today not much pain at all. My Dr. asked that I lie on my back and left both legs a bit as if I was doing crunches for my lower body, I did and she felt with her hands for the pot. She swabbed me with alcohol to clean the area. I closed my eyes because I am very afraid of needles. Small prick. Dr. says she put 5cc in I had my eyes shut the whole time. Not much restriction at first. My stomach growls a bit. I had Water and a yogurt, some Peanut Butter, I was hungry.

    Starbucks drinks

I gave up anything carbonated, alcohol, sweetened begs and any sweetener that wasn’t natural years ago. Coffee was my last real THING! 😜 :). Argh!

    Splenda

I have never heard of Splenda giving you gas. The Sugar Alcohols like sorbitol, manitol, etc. can give you terrible gas. A lot of things that say they have Splenda in them on the front of the package actually have a lot of sugar alcohols. These are not low calorie, but do not digest like sugar and do not cause a spike in blood sugar, so they are used by diabetics. Most of the sugar free candies have this in them, even though they say "Made with Splenda".

Carlene: You are a gorgeous wonderful mom to take on your grandchildren for your DD and in all probablity giving the children an upbringing they so richly deserve. My bro in law is an alcoholic and a bi polar now in his 70's. Has been sober pretty much of of the time with a few slips. AA helped him and today he is in his 30th year. My sister went to Alanon for support. Somehow you wonderful woman must make time for yourself. All the baby chasing etc is tiring, but nothing like a little time off for yourself will revitalize you. You need that aqa walking. Is there anyone you know that could take the children for a 1/2 hour. In our community centre, they have day care for single moms while they take the exercise program. Any around your area? Just a few thoughts.
