Anybody Here Hyperthyroid?
crosswind replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's a good point. When I went in there I already knew about the hyperthyroid. The first doctor I saw nine years ago made me eat a nuke and get radioactive to check for nodules and etc. I did not have Grave's Disease. She considered it "idiopathic". The next doctor I had, who hated me, told me I was slightly hyperthyroid and that was "good news", because I was then not *hypothyroid". i remember telling him I thought this was part of the reason I ate so much -- I could easily put down a whole Domino's bacon chicken ranch pizza by myself in those days, and I remember him saying to me, " Well, we should talk about why you're eating a whole pizza, that's not good for you at all." And I just sort of looked at him. ( Are we not talking about that right now? Hello?) But I did go in complaining of exhaustion and anxiety this time- actually I just have trouble sleeping mostly. So I had Iron deficiency anemia and hyperthyroid, sort of as usual, but she wanted to treat my anxiety with beta blockers and tricyclics because, basically, all doctors seem to think I'm trying to hit them up for benzos. Which I should add, I am -- I don't abuse them but it is darn nice to have one or two floating around in your purse for luck. If I had deformed left cardiac ventricle or frequent bouts of tachycardia and excessive sweating and all that, I would go on the things. If I had any other risk factor for a heart attack or stroke, I would definitely go on them. But I don't want to fight off another fifty pounds for freakin *insomnia*. I'm not even convinced the problem is actually my thyroid. None of these last two doctors did that other test -- the FT4 or whatever it's called. I'm really sensitive to drugs that cause weight gain. Not only that, I think...well, really -- my sense is that one should do as little messing with one's thyroid as possible because endocrinology is the most delicate of sciences. I'm not going to start drugging it or hacking at it just because some doctor I've known for ten minutes tells me to do it. I swear I think doctors just throw drugs at people lately. Maybe it will work, who knows, I'm being "treated". But here's the kicker question: is it really a better medical decision to prescribe two heavy duty meds on top of one another after a glance at a lab printout and five minutes talking to me than it would have been to just write me a prescription for Ativan? Bah. -
my pre-op was blood samples for testing... I don't know why you are worried about a weight gain on your pre-op...if you are doing the liquid protein diet, you should be fine... I have been on it 10 days and have lost over 10 pounds... relax! You'll be fine!

I think part of success is surrounding yourself with like-minded people who are experiencing success. I so agree with Danny and Sosewsue that the beatings must stop. Experience shows morale NEVER improves under these conditions. I think you have to re-believe you can do this and get hold of things. The first is with utter honesty to yourself and others. So start by making a ticker, posting your stats--take weight and measurments. Then plan, plan, plan. I completely agree with going to see your surgeon and RD for a check-up and to get a new plan. Haul out the old RD plan. And choose the day or meal and simply START. Commit to the one meal. And do it. Commit to limiting snacking and dumping the crap--kick it to the curb. Bring a cheese stick or an ounce of dense protein. And eat it if you feel snacky at first. Then commit to the second meal and third and fourth, then commit to the next entire day...then the next. And it builds up. Success is nothing more and nothing less than tiny, baby, consistent, actionable steps that are repeated daily/routinely. Don't look too far down the road. Stay in the moment and the do the tiny baby step work. The future takes care of itself. Also, never underestimate the power of a good walk to or a good fast workout with sweating and raised heart rate to lift the spirits. Research is showing exercise and getting out in the sun can be as effective as mood elevator drugs -- without the side effects of weight gain. Hugs and hang in there. You've taken the first step. Now it's time to take the next.

Weight gain six weeks out...
Hopeful in Rochester posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I've gained three pounds in the last week or so! I'm six weeks post op. my starting weight was 200 and now I'm 178. I eat about 500-800 calories a day, the majority of which is protein. I fall short on my fluids - I get around 45 ounces a day. I've also started exercising almost daily over the last couple of weeks. What else can I do? I'm so very frustrated to have had this huge life-altering surgery and to see the scale moving in the wrong direction... I'm trying not to focus solely on the numbers but seeing them move up is really scaring me. Open to all feedback!! -
He was less than professional. All he needed to say was let's get you back on track. I'm sorry your feeling hurt. I don't do any follow ups with my bariatric program. I get my check up and blood work up from my family doctor. The great thing is your not on your own. You can contact another bariatric program out of your area. The dietician can mail or email you the food plan instructions. Many people here on bariatric pal are willing to share their diet instructions for you to use. None of us are perfect. Many of us have had weight gain. Getting back on track can be done. You have our support.

I've heard/read a lot of people say that "you have to get your head right" if you want to succeed in WLS. I'm not really into counseling; I guess I just don't believe in trying to change my thoughts and I find the idea of therapy kind of... contrived? (I really don't mean to offend people who do find counseling helpful; if it helps you, awesome! I'm just skeptical that it would do me any good.) I also had a bad experience in the past with being forced into counseling with an unethical therapist, which soured my view of counseling. I really want to succeed at WLS, though, so I'm willing to give counseling a shot if there's a chance it could help. I never thought I'd willingly eat mashed cauliflower, either, but I've opened my mind to things I wouldn't have tried before surgery. Plus, I've reached my out-of-pocket maximum on my health insurance, so any counseling I get before the end of the year would be fully paid by my insurance. So, does anyone who has gotten counseling specifically related to WLS have any advice, or can you share how it has helped you? What should I look for in a therapist? I've done a cursory search of nearby therapists in my insurance network, and I haven't seen any of them specifically mention things like WLS, food issues, or eating disorders. I don't think I have an eating disorder (like binge eating disorder) and I don't think I am really an "emotional eater," but I do think I have some food issues and some baggage relating to eating and weight that have contributed to my weight gain. Would someone who deals with "mood disorders" cover that, or should I look for someone with specific expertise in eating disorders or WLS patients?

Starting a second journey; Questions
SorryNameTaken replied to davidpelletier's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am revising band to bypass later on this month. My doctor is not a fan of going band to sleeve because the sleeve is typically positioned over the scar tissue from the band, which has an increased chance of leaking versus him being able to work around the tissue to create the bypass pouch. He also thinks with me having a hormonal co-morbidity that causes weight gain, I can use that extra push of caloric deficiency. That being said, tons of people go band to sleeve with great success! The biggest deterrent I see from the sleeve is if you have any problems with GERD or acid reflux, they often don't suggest the sleeve because it can make those worse causing people to ultimately revise to bypass to help alleviate the reflux. Your doctor can help you make the best informed decision for you, but in the meantime, there's plenty of revision experiences on the board, so I'm sure other people can give you better insight! Good luck! -
I am 52 days post op and generally have not been weighing myself daily, but started weighing myself every couple of days. I am up two pounds. I have been exercising in the pool daily for up to an hour, have been meeting my Protein requirements and fluids. This is so frustrating!

My plan allows me to drink right up till I start eating but no liquids with meals or for 30 minutes after. That's pretty much forever. If you drink with your meal you push the food into your intestines, leaving your stomach empty and triggering hunger. The 30 minute wait is critical to steady weight loss now and to preventing weight gain once we get to goal weight.

Eating my head off!
lamsunshine replied to Deedle Dee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went through this but unfortunately for me, I had almost a year to even get a date for my surgery. So I had alot of last meals that lead to 14 lb weight gain. You of course don't have that long. When I finally did get closer to my surgery I had to join Weight Watchers to lose that excess weight. It has all worked out and since I have been post op, I have been doing great. My advise to you is not to go overboard on the last meals, because if you gain that is just going to be more weight you will have to lose after surgery. Good luck -
Congratulations on a successful surgery. Yes the weight gain is definitely fluid especially since you haven't been eating. Totally normal.

pain in upper left side abdomen
Heather_8.1.14 replied to Angela from nz's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Are you vomiting or feeling "stuck" a lot? If so it might be your band becoming tighter. To be honest, I would worry more about a possible slip rather then weight gain right now. You got it off once you can do it again I would give your surgeon a call and have some fluid removed. Good luck! -
Weight Gain After Lap-Band Surgery
IrishInPgh posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, another new person here. Thanks for such a valuable site for information on this procedure! Seeing my surgeon this week; hopeful I'll get an approval for January surgery. I've read several of the different threads, and I'm curious about those complaining about weight gain. Why do you not mention returning to your doctor's offices on a regular basis for consultation - and what about fills to assist you and get you back on track? Isn't that the purpose of the "adjustable" band?? Thanks - and good luck to all of you! -
Today I had my weekly weigh-in and I have gained 0.2 lbs. This has been my first gain since surgery in Jan. I have lost 81 lbs and I should not be so upset about this. 81 lbs is huge! So, why does this hurt so bad. A lot of questions are running through my head. What did I do wrong? Have I hit my limit; never loose again? I know it seems silly, but I could really use some encouragement right about now.Weight Gain Panic Today I had my weekly weigh-in and I have gained 0.2 lbs. Hormones. You can gain Water weight easily during your cycle times, and especially in the first couple of months the hormone dump is going to be crazy insane. Fat stores hormones and as you drop fat, it all gets flushed back into your system and will cause all sorts of fun side effects like random weight gain, mood swings and such. You'll see weight fluctuate often during this whole journey. Just keep doing what you're supposed to be doing and it will work out.

Can anyone explain how on day 4 I gained 4lbs? I am getting all my liquids in and only drinking sugar free drinks. I will say I started my period on day 2 and just yesterday got the OK to take all my meds, one of which is hydyoclorosine (sp?). I have done everything by the book so to gain weight about makes me want to cry. I originally told myself I wouldn't check my weight till my one week check up......wish I listened to myself

My record is 7 pounds! I gain it the week before and then lose it the day before or the first day. My sister is the same but she doesn't lose hers until the end of her period. I'm hoping that when I'm smaller my pre period weight gain will be less too!

People and their opinions.....
xX_iSLAY_All_Day_Xx posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today in class I was speaking with a classmate whom had the Lap Band surgery a year ago. As we were going back in forth in conversation talking about weight gain, bariatric surgery and other stuff...meanwhile some others were listening in on our convo.(Noseyasses). One particular person asked us what the criteria was in order to be considered for surgery.. we told her and she was like "oh, okay cool..." So this person asked me what surgery was I looking into,I said,"RNY"... the whole dag'gone class turned their heads at me and stared.. as if I said that Jesus wasn't real or something else!!!! People frown on RNY..they say stuff like, "Wow, thats too drastic", " I'm not doing all that", or "I'll just walk and exercise to get my weight off". Anyways... everybody started giving there opinions about it... how people get sick or die or vomit or get infections or lose their hair or whatever else they could think of...smdh. Not to mention the classmate who had the Lap Band surgery started going on and on about how Lap Band is reversible or whatever..and the reason she chose it. She said it in such a tone though, like her decision was the better one. Beware people! Choosing baratric surgery is like choosing a gang.. if you don't choose their gang they will argue you down and try to make their decision or choice seem as if it's the rational one... and believe me they are passionate about their beliefs. So be strong. lol -
I loved my nuvaring. No side effects. Insertion was a bit intimidating, but the pill made me very very sick. I had no weight gain, didn't have to remember to take a pill, and could make it so I didn't have a period every months. I totally recommend it.
