  1. I am a vegetarian so most of my protein sources have carbs in them. I eat around 90-150 carbs a day, mostly from good clean sources with a few chocolate chips thrown in for good measure! I keep track of calories, get in my 65+ gms of protein a day, and try to get in variety for the rest of my 1100-1400 cals a day. I have 6 pounds to get to "normal" weight and have eaten regular food mostly the whole time. I think of myself as losing slowly, but 82 pounds in 10 months is NOT that slow. The 10 more pounds I am shooting for will come off eventually... while I am eating good whole grain, garden grown, home made carb including food in small doses. I love my sleeve! ...the only "phony" food I eat is hi quality vegetarian protein foods, like protein chips, bars, cereal and drinks... to help me keep my protein up and keep my hands off of junk like candy bars and chips. You have to figure out for yourself what you can live with for the long run.

    Any Sleevers That Are Vegan?

I am 8 months out from surgery and became a (struggling, mostly) vegetarian about a month ago. I fully feel it is the way to go and if you do enough research you will find you can get 100% of the required protein from plant based foods. It is much more difficult then just eating meat and I honestly still drink a protein drink almost every morning simply because it makes getting my quota that much easier. I do not think I could, or should, go vegan simply because the cheese and eggs have been helpful for me in eating better and getting protein, and to be very honest, I am not a vegetarian for animal "rights" reasons whatsoever. A typical day for me is a protein shake and egg for breakfast, a salad and beans of some-sort for lunch, and often I have a meat-like vegetarian product for dinner along with vegetables or whole grains. I really love the Gardein brand because they taste very meat-like and have high protein. Also, Quorn has some great meat-like products that are high protein that are easy to add into meals. My weight loss has slowed, but I do not think that has to do with adding in a few more carbs and changing my diet as much as it has to do with a natural body change after loosing the weight I have. Long term, I know this is the better, healthier way for me to maintain my health versus just having a lower number on the scale. If you have any more questions go for it, I have done quite a bit of work trying to switch over and still follow a higher protein weight loss diet. Best of luck whichever way you go with!!

    Any Sleevers That Are Vegan?

I am interested in becoming a vegetarian and if I can, a vegan. Realistically now is not the time to do this because I need to get the protein in, but I wondered if anyone has become a vegetarian or vegan a year or so after surgery... after the bulk of the weight was lost. Any feedback would be great

    WLS cookbooks

Oh, can I add one? I bought "Hungry Girl's 300 calorie Recipes", which has some great, small-portioned foods, including a bunch of recipes that need a mug and a microwave. She seems to lean towards the vegetarian side of cooking, but the few I've tried have been good. And, there's always Egg-face's blog. She's got a ton of WLS friendly stuff on there, including tons of shake recipes for Protein drinks.

    Calcium supplement??

I take one I got from a health food store, the brand is Pioneer they are vegetarian and gluten free. It is dark chocolate flavor (but just tastes like chocolate) I take 3 halves a day because that's all I need to get my required calcium. However when I am done with these I will be taking Citracal petites. They are small and easy to swallow. My sister had the band and she takes these. I also bought Opurity brand chewable multivitamins and hate them as well. I will be looking for a better one when these are gone. I try to chew and swallow as fast as I can. Eeesh they are nasty.
  6. I didn't tell anybody but family that I was doing it. I have told people after I had it done and only got one negative comment from a guy who is a vegetarian and very thin. People are just stupid sometimes. You are doing this for you not them so just try to tune the negatives out. Good luck, your doing the right thing.

    Gaining weight!! HELP

Dear Kiwi, First be nice to yourself you havent failed until you have quit. I advise you to deal with your health issues and get those under control before worrying about your weight! Once that is all done and under control I would say two things: 1. Proably get a fill to reign in how much you are eating. 2. Beans are the cheapest best food for all humans and I think they are perfect for a bnder. Super high protein and kind of mushy and very filling. I LOVE the vegetarian refried beans in a can with some sour cream and salsa!

    Yummy Fritatta

I posted this on another thread and thought I would post here as well incase someone has interest... Frittata recipe for anyone interested... Ingredients: Buy one large container of Egg Whites One package of baby spinach (you can switch out any veggies but this is my fave) Pam Spray Goat cheese (you can also add low fat mozarella) Italian seasonings (or any spices you enjoy) I buy one package of Jimmy Dean low fat Turkey Sausage crumbles. (You can also switch this out with turkey bacon, vegetarian fake sausage crumbles, etc) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Take one large frying fan with a METAL handle (NOT PLASTIC as this will go in the oven) Spray with pam pretty heavily so that the fritatta pops right out at the end Pour the bag of turkey crumbles in the pan (or your meat of choice) and warm up Then I add the whole bag of spinach which cooks down and softens up very well and sneaks in a good amount of veggies - (this is where you can also sneak in other veggies if you want - Asparagus tips, red peppers, etc) Then on Medium to Medium-High heat (you don't want this to burn the bottle) add the carton of egg whites which will cover the large pan. You may not have to use the whole container. It all depends on how large you want your fritatta and how big your pan is. It doesn't rise so you can eye this. On Medium heat, let is cook for a few minutes. You will notice the whole thing cooking except the top. At this point is where I put in goat cheese crumbles which end up melting with the turkey sausage and spinach and then I sprinkle Italian seasons all over it Put it into the oven for about 8 mins which will cook the top up and melt the goat cheese Once you see it's finished, pull out of oven and flip onto plate. You can then use another plate to flip it back over to see the pretty side. Cut into pie slices. You can then rewarm each slice for about 45 seconds thru the week. It's a super easy, super quick Breakfast and it's such a great flavor and way to sneak in veggies and Protein and being very low fat. It also helps with less waste of throwing food away because you can sneak in different veggies. The one above just happens to be my fave flavors. You can alternate different meats and cheeses and veggies and have a million different variations. This ends cooking with Lisa LOL

  10. I cant do yogurt either and I am basically a vegetarian so I have to give some effort to protein. I have a Premier Protein drink every morning, partly because solid food is difficult in the morning. Its from Cosco and comes in an 18 pak of little cartons. They have choc and vanilla and they are both good. Sometimes I order the strawb for variety. They are 160 calories and 30 grams of protein and I think that really starts the day right. I am also quite lazy and I make an egg in a coffee cup in the microwave and then put cheese on it. I do eat some cottage cheese with salsa and a fair amount of tuna salad or egg salad. I buy some premade tofu salads at Whole foods which I know would be outrageously expensive except for how little I eat! Once in a while I have made the effort to put protein powder (GNC) in grits, oatmeal, or soup. PS If you are going to try those protein shots (the ones I got were in test tubes) stand next to the sink...mine was instantly rejected!
  11. I came across your profile as I was looking for some help getting all the necessary protein, as I am a vegetarian, and a lousy one at that. I do not like soy or tofu... or any of the "fake meat". I am getting banded in less than 10 days and am trying to prepare post op meal plans for the first month. Let me know if you have any tips or tricks. Thank you.

    Starting Over...

keep in mind that with the lap band you don't lose weight as fast as someone who has had the bypass. I had my band 2 years ago and have lost 80 lbs. I now work out with a trainer and will be having a tummy tuck this friday. I am now a size 12 - i was a 22. It is important to realize that with the band you will never eat the way you used to ever again. I have found a great supplement that i highly recommend. I take a shake for Breakfast and lunch and ususally have Soup, chowder or chili for dinner. I became a vegetarian because eating meat of any kind became too difficult with the band. The shake is called Vi-Shape and is by ViSalus. They also have other nutritional supplements as well. Check out the web site www.myvi.net/katelm i only took 2 days off work, i am an O.R nurse. Post op was uncomfortable but not painful. i started yoga and exercising about 4 weeks later. the weight will come off relatively fast at first but will slow down. Just stick to your diet that works for you and you will be successful. I found that what i could tolerate may change daily- thats why i went to shakes and Soups etc. Sometimes i could eat yogurt, eggs or Pasta and some days not at all. I havent had any pasta, eggs, bread, or meat since the second month after the surgery. Good luck to you... life will get better--- you are changing for the better!!!

8 months out and need help!

Part way into my 7th month I started a 6-7 week stall. I am not perfect, but I do log everything I eat and watch my calories (1100-1300), exercise, eat enough protein, eat around 100 gms of carbs a day... sometimes more... I am only about 12 pounds from goal, and I know it will be slow. I did up my calories and make some more carb choices right before I started losing again..slowly. I figured my body was done... but luckily it is not done yet. I am a vegetarian, and you do get more carbs eating that way. I look good, and my friends all say I don't need to lose more, and I just tell them I am going for the medical "norm" for best health. They can understand that. I am not shooting for the lowest in my BMI norm... But my body will stop when it is ready, and if I need to I'm sure I can eat more than I do now. Hang in there, and treat yourself nice. Its just part of your personal roller coaster ride.
  14. Hi, everyone! I've been lurking on this site for about 3 months now, and have only just decided to join. So, I thought I'd share a quick story about me, my weight, and my sleeve! I'm 27 years old, of Indian ethnicity, and have been overweight since I was maybe 4 years old. I have the usual story of trying this diet, that diet, meeting with loads of doctors, etc. etc. About a year ago, an acquaintance of mine (now a mentor) had a bypass done, and I was inspired to look into weight loss surgery! I was studying medicine in India (I'm born and raised in California), while I researched everything, and decided to get the surgery done as soon as I finished med school. I was sleeved on August 31st, 2011 by Dr. Oliak in Orange County, California. He's amazing. I recovered well, and have been on solids for a few weeks now. I'm currently in India while I finish up some paperwork to transfer back to the States. As a Vegetarian, I've found my options limited. In India, they are limited even more so, because it's hard to get a hold of cheeses, soy products, and all that good stuff! Still, I'm hanging in there and enjoying my sleeve so far. I don't know how much I've lost, since I have decided not to weigh myself for a while. I want to follow the diet plans without worrying about the outcomes, because I know I'll be a slow loser. Perhaps once I get back home I will be able to bring some variety into my diet, and will be interested in knowing how much of a difference it makes. I wanted to thank all of you for keeping these forums so active, because I've been able to learn so much from your experiences! My weight loss has been slow, from what I see in my body, but it's there nonetheless. You guys keep me motivated and interested. Thank you!
  15. Oh yeah. I had minor issues prior to surgery, especially when pregnant. I would stick to Lactaid and I'd be fine. Post op all milk is a no-no. I've said sad farewells to soft cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, sour cream, etc. I can handle VERY small amounts of say, light cream in my coffee, or eat one cheese ravioli. Anything else makes me sick. I can eat hard cheeses but unfortunately cannot find vegetarian versions of them here in Bishkek so that does me no good! I drink a lactose free Protein shake and so long as I mix it with soy milk or coffee I'm fine. I think Tiffy had an issue, too. Basically find ways to work around it. It's hard but you can do it, especially stateside with lots of options like soy yogurt, coconut milk, coconut ice cream, Tofutti products! I have to make my own soy milk here (I actually like it better than the packaged stuff but it's not fortified) and my own tofu, but other than that I'm on a pretty limited diet out here in the wilderness. You are not alone! ~Cheri Edited to add: I can use goat milk in cooking, though, and I make a mean chevre from it, so try that if you're really hankering for cheese. Goat milk still has lactose but something about the amount of fat makes it easier to digest. I still have to stick to small portions to avoid issues but it's something!

    Band failure?

Hello! So I was banded June 30th, and while it started out ok on the liquid diet, I haven't lost any weight since the week of July 10th. Before you go on your rant of telling me "don't lose hope" I've been working out 5x a week and I am following the plan perfectly. I have gone vegetarian and carb-free for the last 3 months, and I haven't lost or gained an ounce. NOT ONE. What I want to find out, is there anyone who had the band fail and went for bypass or another option that actually worked? I have insulin resistance and PCOS, which they tell me are factors in losing weight with the band. If you want more details, you can view my blog here: http://daily-katie.blogspot.com/ Any information or suggestions of what has worked for others when the band didn't, would be great. Thanks! Katie
  17. such good ideas! except for the greek yogurt... I don't know why but that stuff is totally gross to me.... but it's kind of reassuring that it's difficult to eat red meat because as an ex-vegetarian the only meat I will eat is turkey and chicken and I won't be missing anything. Do you have anyone else in your house? if so, have they been open to eliminating all the junk food? I worry that my husband won't be able to change as drastically as I am and will either resent not having junk food or bring it in the house anyway.

    No No Food

I wasn't given any sort of no-no's other than to eat healthfully. I haven't tried bread (I'm actually scared to, for both the sleeve-upsetting factor and the trigger-food factor). I decided not to re-incorporate foods like Pasta, rice, potatoes, baked goods back into my diet, since I don't miss them and don't need them. I also decided to keep high-sugar and fried foods off the menu more or less permanently because my sleeve hates them. I eat the types of Protein my sleeve will tolerate (mostly vegetarian and dairy), plus I eat carbs in moderation. I am not especially carb-sensitive, so this keeps me happy and satisfied. I just ate about a cup of popcorn (yum!) and I usually enjoy a margarita at Friday afternoon happy hour with a colleague. Bottom line, I think every individual has to arrive at an eating plan that fits his/her lifestyle, sleeve tolerance, weight loss goals, and health. You'll know if you try something and it doesn't work!!

    strange cravings

I crave vegetables. The day of surgery I was craving asparagus and brussel sprouts, things I might have once or twice a year! When I was in the grocery store yesterday, the tomatoes looked soooo good. I am not a vegetarian and find this unusual. I think what I am craving is variety and stronger tastes. Less than a week out and still on full liquids.

    Any Vegetarians?

i haven't had chicken in about 13 years. when someone eats fish, technically they aren't a vegetarian; they're a pescetarian. since so few people know that word, and because i only eat fish once or twice a week, i still refer to myself as a vegetarian. there are a few different types of vegetarians. if you google it, it'll talk about about the different types.

Do you eat chicken? Is being a vegetarian simply deciding not to eat red meat?

    Any Vegetarians?

i've been a vegetarian for about 14 years and have been banded a little over 12 months. i do 1-2 protein shakes a day as my snacks, eat a lot of low fat cottage cheese, fat free greek yogurt, eggs, edamame, tofu, and veggie burgers without buns. i have, since surgery, started to eat fish, primarily tuna and salmon, which i have approximately 1-2 times per week. if i didn't drink protein shakes, i wouldn't make my 80 g protein a day. i've learned to really enjoy them, though.

    Any Vegetarians?

Tomorrow is my three year anniversary of going vegetarian. Best. Choice. Ever. My Protein sources are mainly organic dairy, Morningstar veggie burgers, lentils, Beans, tofu and nuts. I find lots of great information at nomeatathlete.com . I haven't had a Protein shake since the first month I was banded (Dec 2010) and I've done great. Did a triathlon last month and a training for a half marathon. I also really like Brendan Brazier's books but have a hard time doing vegan AND raw. At some point, I hope to switch over to vegan but for now I'm healthy, losing fat and feeling good.

    Any Vegetarians?

Ive been a veg for 10 years. I did a few years vegan, and then slowly started eating seafood, dairy and eventaully chicken on occasion ( I live in a country that is very red meat loving). Mostly I eat a lot of Soups, stews, tofu based meals, chili, salads, etc. There are tons of recipes if you look up vegetarian low carb meals (how i try to eat). Just google it and try a few things out.
