Plateaus? Help! I need encouragement!
Miss Mac replied to maier_la's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are right smack in the middle of normal. That third week stall can last anywhere from a couple of days to two or three weeks, then you will start losing again. Today, 12/23/2014 is my one year surgiversary. I have lost 65 of the 100 pounds set with my original goal of 135. My last stall lasted from mid-June to the end of November, then all of a sudden on December first, it started dropping again. I guess I am a slow loser. I have decided that I am not going to stress out over it. The second year is just as important as the first. One advantage of losing more slowly is that your skin has a better chance of regaining elasticity. Those of us who have gone before you will keep encouraging you to stay with the plan your team gave you. Have faith in the process and don't become part of the sofa. -
This is exactly what's happening to me... I can't get past this stall .. Lost 22 the first three weeks but scales haven't changed in two weeks :/ on week five now Able to eat pretty much anything now so I've been very lucky but I hope this stall changes quick Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

3weeks post-op and I've had (so far) a three day stall already--Is this normal?
Suko67 replied to Suko67's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Bruff: I am happy to report that my 3rd week stall ended after five days and with a three pound loss. I realize that other people choose not to weigh daily, but I DO keep the weight loss in perspective and thanks to all the VST posters who helped me understand that a 3rd week stall is not the end of my "window of opportunity for weight loss" but is normal for many of us. I am still weighing daily--but I do not get too discouraged if I have only lost 4-5 oz or even nothing at all. I feel so much better than I did a month ago (tomorrow will be one full month since my surgery). I have lost 25 lbs, lost 5 inches from my waist, and 5 1/2 inches from my chest. ( those are the only area I re-measured today). This puts me with 1/4 of desired weight loss goal, and it puts below 200 lbs ( I haven't been under 200 lbs in 6 years ). I am 5'4" so I want to lose 75 lbs more to reach my goal weight of 122 lbs, which will put me around a 20.5 BMI-- a healthy, and fit weight for me. So from my recent experience, I say Bruff--hang in there--keep up the healthy eating and exercise and your scale will start to move down once again. I have confidence! Sent from my iPad using VST -
3 week stall
marbelvsg replied to 2NewBeginningsxoxo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This isn't much advice but perhaps it can be of some comfort. I also stalled at three weeks and did not lose anything during weeks three or four. Then the weight loss picked up again and I have been losing consistently. (I am in week 8 now). So, just hang in there and try not to feel down or upset. You will start losing again soon! Good luck! -
Stalled after the first week?
Bronco0605 replied to LynRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am at three weeks now. Stalled since week one. I was not hitting my water and protein marks. When I spoke with the urse yesterday she said it canbe any number of things. This really is a drstic thing we have done to our bodies and sometimes it takes our body a while to catch up. She said our body sometimes goes into a starvation mode and clings to everything we do consume and oes not let go of anything at all hence no loss. She told me eventually my body will get the message that it is getting food regularly and I will start to lose. You will too. I guess we just to hang in there. -
Worried About Weight Loss At Age 56
Queen of Crop replied to becksnky's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@retakk and Eat that Frog: If you want some reassurance and inspiration, please read my blog. The three of us are so similar; about the same weight, height, BMI and age....and I had hip, knee and feet problems and I was also self-pay. I am now a year out, at goal and I logged my journey every Sunday for the past year. Retakk....until I had this surgery, I could barely lose weight on 1000 calories a day....so don't despair. I did have some plateaus; but I had lost 30 lbs before I had my first stall and then it lasted a few weeks and started coming off again. I firmly believe this tool was made for people like us. If you cannot see my signature line, then go to www.queenofcrop.com/about and start there. I think you will find a lot of information and similarities between us. Good luck and congratulations on making this positive step in your life. -
Surgery was a little over 2 weeks ago
blizair09 replied to ShilohD's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with @_Kate_. Stay off of the scale for the first month. Your body is healing and making the necessary adjustments, so your weight will fluctuate. Also, almost everyone experiences the "three week stall" (search the forum for countless threads on it or just google it in general for more information). Concentrate on meeting your protein and water goals over anything else right now. If you follow your plan, the weight will begin to come off. Patience is really important in this journey! Good luck! -
Hi All, I am 4 months out and have exactly 20 pounds to go before goal. I can say that, up until now, it has been pretty easy. I was eating as much as I could to get in the Protein and my restriction has kept me in check. Now I have hit my first stall and it isn't a secret as to why. Three things have happened in the last couple of weeks: 1) eating has gotten more comfortable. 2) boredom eating has returned. 3) I was prescribed one-time medication that kept me from going to the bathroom (you know what I mean) for 7 days. So let me address them one by one... 1) eating has gotten more comfortable. I knew it would happen sooner or later. What used to take 20 minutes of careful chewing now goes down in 5 minutes of fairly thorough chewing. Big difference. The discomfort really helped. I have found more foods that slide right through (shrimp chips are NOT ALLOWED in the house ever again!!). Now I have to re-focus my efforts on sticking with the stuff that is harder to eat and fills me up faster. I still love chicken, and that helps :-) 2) Boredom eating. I didn't realize it until yesterday, but I can eat every hour if I want to. When I am bored, that's what I do. My portions are small, but I can eat more often and I have a mental drive that pushes me to snack when I am bored. Bad. Really bad. I need to go back through what I am eating, pre-portion what I can have for the day, put it in a bag and have the determination to only eat what I have set aside for myself. its actually really easy when I am having a normal, somewhat stimulating day. But, lately, work has been unbelievably boring and I am straying off the path. The sleeve is still working for me because I don't really get hungry. It's my mind exploiting the fact that it is physically possible for me to eat!!!!! That's going to be tough... 3) The meds. Ugh! It was a one day thing (thankfully) but I still am feeling really bloated and haven't quite gotten back on schedule. I've been missing my daily oatmeal for various reasons and I am sure that's not helping. However this problem is a temporary one. I feel like I am going through a transition time with my sleeve. The eating comfort has changed and now I really have to dig deep to keep making healthy choices. Overall, it is not that hard. The sleeve is still doing what it has promised to do. It's the initial choice that I have to stay on top of. I need something else to do / think / say when I get bored so I don't immmediately go to the kitchen. Also, if I do go for a snack, if I grab some cold roasted chicken, I can really curb the rest of the craving. It's all about choices. What can I say... I am a work in progress.

One Month Out From Gastric Sleeve Surgery And Scale Has Not Moved
*susan* replied to bonbon85's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Remember, your body is going through a lot of changes right now. Don't get upset about the scale not moving, it will catch up and even out. Try taking your measurements on a regular basis, you will probably be happy to see that even if the scale isn't moving, you are losing inches. Most everyone goes through a stall somewhere between weeks three and six. It is not at all unusual, though it is frustrating. Just remember, it won't last forever! -
October 2012 sleevers whats your progress?
Ontheroadtoslim replied to Indigoflgrl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved 10/31. w 257 SW 249 CW 215. Going good....working out with a trainer and doing lots of cardio. Can eat pretty much whatever I want. Eating all the protein is still impossible without the aid of 1-2 protein shakes per day. Carbs are my weakness.....eating is so much more comfortable with the carbs. Three week stall has made me lose them though and go back to protein only. -

Stalls are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the process of losing weight. We all experience stalls and just about everyone a stall about three weeks after surgery. Just follow your program, focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids, take your Vitamins and supplements as directed, and exercise when cleared. longest weight loss stall ever!!!
jamey replied to greeneyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will continue. I stalled out at three-four weeks. I agree introducing solids was what did it for me. I have learned from this wonderful site that we are all stall, we all lose at different rates. But, we all lose. Hang in there. This too shall pass. Just remember..Protein first, veggies second, other carbs last. If I follow the first two, there is never room for the third and there is no way that combo can fail. -
Newbie 3 weeks out , not lost weight since 1st week
Inner Surfer Girl replied to zenabro's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's great that you are doing so well. Unless you are really swollen, you probably won't feel much of any restriction until you get to solid foods. What you will be looking for is feeling satisfied and not "full". It will be really easy to go from satisfied to really uncomfortable with one bite so it is very important to measure portion sizes, take very small bites, chew thoroughly, and eat slowly. For now, sipping slowly instead of taking big swallows should keep you from overdoing it. As to weight loss, just stay off the scale for the first few weeks. Some people gain after surgery due to swelling and Fluid retention, and just about everyone experiences a stall at about three weeks post-op. Just follow your program. Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids. Take your Vitamins as directed. And exercise when cleared. Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall -
Wow three months since I had surgery seems like forever ago! I am down 46 lbs since June 2nd surgery and I feel Great! Loads of energy I had to lose 18lbs pre surgery so I started on low fat diet in April which adds up to a whopping 63lbs I look so much better than I did I don't keep a food diary because I eat the same variation of food every day- 6 small meals My saving food is Cream of Wheat, never ate it before but now it keeps me sane Since the first couple of weeks my weight loss has been slow with lots of stalls, but it is continuing 1-2 lbs each week I am almost half way there I exercise 3-4 times a week-I have a very busy job and I don't always get time out to exercise If you are considering surgery-I won't lie to you it is very hard the first few weeks and I did suffer from a form of depression, I missed having the option of eating 'normal' food. Once you get into a routine it become easier and your new diet becomes 'normal' I can't eat meat it sticks and I don't like the feeling so I do eat moist food rather than dry-minced Turkey in dishes that I would have put minced beef. I love the new Me! and I can't wait to Celebrate getting into wonderland! Although it may be November or December before I get the 17 lbs off

11 Days Post Op plateau
Arabesque replied to PrairieDogs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stalls are very common & this is just the first of several you will experience. Some last a week others a couple of weeks. My longest, just before I hit goal, lasted almost three. They are frustrating but keep your spirits up. You will start losing again. I always thought of the stalls as my body needing to take a breath to come to terms with my weight loss to that stage. Remember your body is going through some big changes: surgery, reduced food intake, a change of diet & removal of foods your body was used to/dependent upon (sugars, fats, caffeine, alcohol, carbs, etc.), plus a increase to your physical activity. Some veterans will suggest you adjust your diet to start the weight loss again but I just kept to my plan & it started again. I suggest you contact your medical team about your infrequent urination & possible fluid retention sooner rather than later just in case something else isn’t going on. Good luck. -
Weight loss and liquids
findingnish replied to findingnish's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As far as I am concerned, the numbers on the scale are pretty irrelevant until you can reliably get in your protein and fluids every day. Getting enough protein and fluids is critical for healing and for weight loss. That said, none of us lose at a constant or steady rate. We all experience stalls and slow downs and almost everyone has a stall about three weeks after surgery. Weight gain in the first week of surgery is usually because of the IV fluids and swelling (you did just have major surgery). Just follow your program. Focus on getting in at least 64 oz of Fluid and reaching your protein target. Take your Vitamins and supplements as instructed. Exercise when cleared. Stay off the scale. And, Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall My protein target is 60-70 grams of pro mod liquid Protein. Sent from my SM-N910P using the BariatricPal App -
I'm having trouble with my stinking thinking it's hard when others in the house r constantly eating Carbs and sugar. Or always want jack in the box( which I do not eat). But I find myself munching on a few crackers here. A bite of garlic bread there or a small piece if cobbler or cake. I'm trying to get back off the carbs. Not going so well do far. I don't eat many but right now it seems like if I have any at all I keep wanting them. Also have been stalled got over three weeks again.

Your stomach is feeling really brutalized right now. This week will be your worst and then as you move into purees, soft foods, and regular foods that taste like something, your energy and your mood will pick up. This is the time to get plenty of rest and follow your plan. You will be quite inconvenienced this week, but you will not regret the long-term results. My experience was that my biggest incision (I had four) was the only one that hurt, and that was just for a couple of days. After that, I did not need any pain relief. I had behind the ear Patches to help calm the nausea which was in part caused by the other meds I had to take. By the end of the first week, I had a serious case of "cabin fever", and just couldn't wait to get out of the house. I do want to give you a "heads up" that along about week three, you may experience a stall in your weight loss. True, it is discouraging - but totally expected as your body adjusts to its new normal. Hang in there, kiddo. Pluck through the next couple of days and you will be past the worst of your recovery. I still think that my recovery was still not as aggravating as the pre-op insurance process! You will feel better shortly. Hugs from Chicago.

Gastric sleeve six week plateau
Arabesque replied to kdnew7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Welcome. You’re likely experiencing what we call the three week stall which can happen before or after the three week mark. It can last 1- 3 weeks where you have no or minimal weight loss. It’s very common. I like to explain it as just your body taking a breath to come to terms with all the changes - the surgery, chance of diet, decrease in caloric intake, etc. It will pass but you’ll likely experience stalls again while you’re losing. Some people suggest increasing or decreasing your food intake or activity level to try to break it. Some of us just stayed our course & it still broke. Whatever you choose to do you will start to lose again. It’s just part of this weight loss journey. Congrats on your surgery. -

Weight loss before surgery
Mark.olypenn replied to JohnBear's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I dropped 15 lbs in the first three months of the medically managed weight loss program. I lost 10 lbs in the first month. In the fourth month, I had my lap band removed as the first step to revision to gastric bypass. I stalled at 15 lbs loss, then gained 2-3 lbs back. The first weeks of a diet are usually water weight loss. So, the first few weeks can be encouraging.
