Head says "Eat! Eat! Eat!" How do I get through it?!
GotProlactinoma replied to bookworm1983's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do not eat anything that tastes sweet. Period. It leads to the wrong gut bugs developing population in your gut and forcing you to crave what they want, which is sugar in some form. It’s the only craving you can’t satisfy with healthy food, so don’t ever eat sugar free popsicles, jellos, or fruit. At least no fruit for 6 months. Develop a taste for roasted root veggies, even potatoes - all gut bugs need carbs but the better populations love starchy vegetables. Make your treats be things like 85% or higher dark chocolate or potatoes or roasted other root veggies. Stay away from all sweets. Each time you eat, eat protein. Use veggies and beans or seeds as your bite or two of carbs after the protein each time you eat. When I get the munchies now I eat 90% dark chocolate which you can eat in small quantities, and it is no longer a candy. It’s got very little sugar so it’s more of a vegan antioxidant with a pick me up than a sweet. I kept fruit out of my diet as my nutritionist suggested for 6 months. Now I can have one strawberry a day or a handful of blueberries. I’m only 9 lbs from goal. I am so glad that now sweet things make me feel quite ill. I used to have a sweet tooth. I eat at least 50% fat every day, so I know for a fact ain’t fat making us fat. So if I want a triple cream cheese or full fat yogurt (plain) I go for it. Or a juicy steak. I never look for low fat or lean anything. Eat fat, plenty of protein, and some veggie carbs. It will really lower your cravings I promise. Those gut bugs are too powerful when they want something. -
Crushed pills

I use a little plastic sandwich bag and then I use a hammer to crush them. I use apple sauce, yogurt is awful and pudding isn't as good. -
The only thing I'd be concerned about is that 50 lbs is not much to lose. I'd ask the surgeon to give you at least a 40f so you will have a better shot at being able to stop the weightloss after you hit50-60 lbs lost. If he gives you a 32, it might be a lot harder to stop the weightloss when you want to. That's just my opinion, and some people say bougie size has very little to do with it, but mine's a 40 and I've lost a lot of weight, never thrown up, never had problems with any food, etc. I love that I'm able to eat anything, just a lot less of it. I'm almost 5 months out and losing steadily. A good example of what I can eat is what I ate yesterday. 1/2 cup of oatmeal with 7 cashews and 10 frozen blueberries 2 string cheese 1/3 of a mango 2 ozs of rice/vermicelli/scrambled eggs/chicken breast 1/4 cup of greek yogurt 1/2 cup of endive/mashedpotatoes/bacon/nutmeg/vinegar mush with 1 cheese souffle (Admittedly this meal took me about an hour to eat but I knew I needed to try to get dinner in because I have a kidney infection so I had been sipping white beer and cranberry juice all day. Man it's hard to drink beer after VSG.) Then before bed I had 5 saltines with light gouda cheese. I thought after all that I'd show a gain on the scale (the beer and cranberry juice alone was 700 calories) but I actually lost another 2 lbs. I dunno, maybe bougie size doesn't matter that much, but I know I can eat enough healthy food with a 40f whereas some people I've read that have a 32 can't get in much more than 1/4-1/2 cup of food at a time. If I only had 50 lbs to lose, I'd be scared it wouldn't stop. I have a few friends that are 20-30 lbs below goal and try very hard to gain weight. We're all different, so it's hard to say, but I do know that a 40 allows me to get in proper nutrition (my 4/5 month bloodwork was excellent!) and still lose weight. Additionally, if for some reason a 40 is too big and you have trouble maintaining, you can have additional surgery to convert to a bypass or switch, but if you get a 32 and can't stop losing, what can you do? Nothing except get used to weighing 110 lbs. Just my opinion. I do think the sleeve is an AMAZING tool, but for someone who has only 50 lbs to lose, it's a risk that your body might get down way below goal before it matures/heals enough to allow you to stop.

anyone else on the 6 month requirement diet not lose weight?
hopeliveshere replied to hopeliveshere's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When i saw the nutrtionist we talked about foods i liked, eating habits and focused on what to eat post op. I have been weighing in with my regular doctor not the nutrtionist though. There is not really a set plan that she has for me. she just told me greek yogurt or eggs for bfest Protein and veggies or salad for lunch and the same for dinner. I have been following that plan, she said she was proud that i had lost 2 lbs, but i feel like it should be more. -
Was going to suggest this. My 2nd week post, full liquids, I made something similar. 1/2 cup FF Greek Yogurt scoop of vanilla protein powder and added water until I got the consistensy I wanted. Delic!!! The water counts towards intake as well as the protein from yogurt and powder.

I'm 6 weeks out. How many of you gastric bypass people dump?
Beni replied to brown eyed gal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
No dumping but I have vomited. Once it was pretty bad with baked salmon. eggs used to be fine but not anymore. It's very easy for me to get foamies. A couple bites and I'm there. Also, I can't tell when my pouch is full. One minute all is well. Next baby spoon and heck, oh no. It takes about 3 minutes for my pouch to tell my brain enough. Not sure why because I am following my plan. Even yogurt this morning caused it and I only ate 1/2 of a yogurt. -
Are there any other newbies on Clear & Full Liquids
NukeChik replied to grandmom4x's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Puddings, yogurt, mashed potates and cream soups were on my full liquid week not the pureed week. I think every doctor is a little different. -
Activa yogurt, the fiber gummies, and a stool softener will help work to keep you regular

All of the sudden I can stand protein shakes and anything dairy
Meryline replied to dennisdj's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have been able to get all my protein from food since maybe 4-5 week (Started solids by day 4 as per my program) We were told that each meal has to be 1 protein portion and on portion is 10g of protein. If you eat 6 times a day, you'll get 60g. I'm 6 months out, I now eat 20g pr meal, 4-5 times a day. The key is meal prep. Figure out how to get 10g of protein into a meal. We were told that 1 egg is considered roughly 10 g. I have found a high protein yogurt that will give me 11g pr 100g. You have fish, chicken, who are fairly light to digest compared to red meat. I make creme cheese sauce with my chicken so it's not so dry, chew chew chew, and it goes down. It is possible is you put some time and effort behind it. Also, track your protein, that is my biggest suggestion. -
How do you know when you're full?
Holly5.3 replied to JAnnette's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At a little over 3 months, for me there is no fullness or emptiness, for that matter! When I over-eat, the nonstop burping starts and then the food wants to come up. Sometimes you can fight the urge, depending on what you ate and how much you over-ate, sometimes you can't! It happens when I forget about my sleeve then take a bite of something carelessly (watching tv, or just distracted) then I'm like, 'Why did I just eat that?' burp...burp! That's why I sometimes just have a safe food for dinner like a yogurt or cottage cheese. I can't take the discomfort when I eat a normal meal sometimes. -

I had the bacon potato Soup puree'd, not a big fan! What about meat? If i made tuna salad, do i have to puree it? What else can I eat that will help my puree stage go better? I dont eat sushi or tofu or any of that! Any avise would be 100% appreciated! I am getting so frustrate! Thanks guys!!! -

Low calories and protein during first post-op weeks
temkins posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow will be one week of VSG, feeling well so far. I feel no hunger at all, and simply force myself to put something into my stomach. I manage to meet my water goal of 64 oz/day, maybe even more (with a few sips of chicken broth every day). But I really fail to manage my protein goal - getting around 15g with my protein shake. I just can't force myself to drink more than 1/2 serving /day. I tried other protein supplements, but they are too sweet -- after the surgery all artificial sweeteners taste really bad. Once I'm allowed to go to the pureed phase, I think I'll be able to get some proteins through unsweetened real foods, like greek yogurts, meats or soups. But I still have to wait for about one more week. As a result, my current daily intake is about 200-250 cal. Is there any risks, like stalls or else, related to low calories? Could I keep my clear liquids diet for one more week without harming myself? -
Are there any other newbies on Clear & Full Liquids
NukeChik replied to grandmom4x's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on full liquids now. Here's what I've had today 4 oz Peach soy baby yogurt- Breakfast fat free sugar free chocolate pudding cup-snack Optima Slim Fast shake (about 1/2's all I could stomach)- lunch full fat full sugar butterscotch pudding cup-snack This part is so much better for me than the broth. If I never have to have any broth for the rest of my life, I will be okay!! I thought I was going to die. I was absolutely starving, in fact I woke up from surgery hungry. -
Hi Amanda Try not to worry.I know its easier said than done! in my first couple of weeks after being banded I didnt feel hungry at all and to be honest the desire to eat just disappeared which was just fantastic! ( it did come back unfortunately!) My doc said to have fluids for 2 wks post op and by fluids that included Soups, yogurt, and porridge so it was pretty easy to stick to. My new stomach pouch could hold 100mls so I made sure not to consume any more than that in one go. Even though I wasnt hungry I made myself have my 'meals' regularly and forced myself to drink plenty of Water. I was drinking water constantly in order to get enough down, which wasnt easy but it is important coz without enough you'll be dehydrated and feel ill. I learned the hard way! Anyway, congratulations on getting through your surgery, Ihope you recover well. All the best on your new journey julia

I could sleep on my left side about 2 days ago, my right is still a wee tender, but I'm off the meds....and seemed to slide from pain to hurt/uncomfortable today. I turned a corner! I have a class this week to talk about stage 3/4 foods next. Pureed foods, here I come! By the way, the multi-vitamins...blech/taste wise, but I coat my tongue in yogurt first to dull the taste. It's fine. They'll help keep me healthy, so I'll deal until I use these up and try a different flavor.

You don't say when you were banded. I am going to assume very recently. That be the case the first 6 weeks is NOT about losing weight, it is about healing. Yes you need to follow the liquid, mushy guidlines so as not to cause band slipage or any other complications. You have plenty of time to worry about how much you are eating after you get healed up. Cottage cheese, applesauce, yogurt, protein shakes, mashed potato, mashed sweet potato, eggs. These are just a few things you could eat. I drink crystal light to help get my liquid intake in. I can't stress enough that you need to drink a lot. If you were just banded more than likely you do not have anything in your band because it is a time for healing. After you get your first fill then you will need to watch closer what you are eating and the amount. You are starting on an incredible journey. It is worth it. Good luck and if you need any more advice this is the place to get it. There are a lot of wonderful people here who are or have been in the stage you are in. Keep posting and asking questions.

If I have the time, I cook a sausage patty, scramble an egg, stack it, and melt a slice of cheese over the top, and split it---more of a 2/3 & 1/3 split, giving my 2 yr old granddaughter the bigger half! If I don't do that I will have part of a container of yogurt with granola. Or some cereal, with milk. I have also been known to eat leftovers for breakfast. My favorite used to be spaghetti---now I must eat a small amount at dinner, and for breakfast, just can't do it!!! I will eat a left over piece of steak, or a burger or something like that though. I too find myself thinking less about food through the day, if I start it out by eating. Kat

Start pre-op diet in 2 days. Suggestions?
xovictorialynn replied to xovictorialynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some things I'm allowed in any amount are crystal light, diet soda, sugar free jello, and broth only soups. I'm more concerned about what I can have in limited amounts, like no sugar added carnation instant breakfasts, low fat milk (lactaid for me) and chobani yogurt. I need to keep my protein per day around 56 grams, which I feel like I won't know how to do without overdoing everything. -

Just checking in as I started my Pre-op diet yesterday and my surgery is scheduled for 4/29. Yesterday was rough!!! I bought the protein shakes at Costco and they do taste very good. They have 160 calories, 30 grams of protein and 1g of sugar. I drink 4 a day and then I can have soup broth, jello, Fat Free yogurt and sugar free popsicles. I also can have a cup of Fat Free Milk once a day and 4 oz of juice once a day. I ended up with a wicked headache last night and took tylenol and went right to bed. Today I've been better. It has it's up's and down's but I know that I can do this. I'm definitely very ready for this and I'm looking forward to being healthy. If anyone else is on their pre-op diet please share how you're doing!

I had my post op today too and everything looked good. I got contact dermatitis from the dermabond that is on its way to healing. Still super itchy but it’s not as red as the past couple of days. I’m beginning to think my practice is so incredibly different from the others. We don’t have a purée stage. First 10 days is liquid+ meaning liquids/shakes/yogurt/pudding etc. after 10 days it goes to soft (fork mashable foods) which includes cooked veggies, meats (ex chicken salad and tuna salad, or any moist meat). I’m now cleared to slowly add in these softer foods before cleared for regular food in 3 weeks. I ate tuna tonight with 0 issues :) Fluid avg: 100oz Protein avg: 85g How is everyone else fairing?
