Everybody is different. Some people have issues with poopin' regularly -- especially soon after surgery (which stage 3 still qualifies for). So dairy (other than Greek yogurt and kefir) might present a bit of an issue by making you more constipated. So you'll just have to try it and see. I put Greek yogurt in a coffee filter lined strainer and and suspend it over a bowl in the fridge overnight. Then I flavor it as I prefer--savory or sweet. It takes the place of a soft cream cheese or boursin very well. It's good for your gut and doesn't seem to affect my poops.

I've had lowfat cream cheese, about a tablespoon, and other low fat dairy products with no problem. I had gastric bypass. You could also substitute non fat plain Greek yogurt. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi Sept peeps! I wanted to check in to see how everyone is doing? I can't believe that as of this upcoming Tuesday I will be 6 weeks out. On Tuesday I will have release to eat whatever I want (of course keeping within recommended dietary guidelines from NUT and what new insides agree with). I'm wondering how it is for others at this time? I do ok with soft foods like yogurt, but really struggle still with more solid foods like shredded chicken. Last night it took me 45 min to get in 3/4 of an ounce of chicken with some spaghetti sauce on it. I'm averaging about 500 cals a day. I still need to rely on protein shakes to get my protein up there. I've had the foamies a few times now - no fun! But I'm having trouble determining what the feeling of "full" is for me, so I think I just overdid it those couple of times with either eating too much or too fast. (I am starting to more consistently use a meal timer to help make sure I don't eat to fast.) How is it for others? It's weird too because every time I eat my new insides gurgle and they feel like they are shifting around. Very strange feeling! Energy level - I'm OK feeling for just regular sitting around and such, but going out to a store can exhaust me. Just last weekend I had to go sit in the car and let my boyfriend finish our grocery shopping without me. Ugh! I'm taking in my first batch of clothes to goodwill today - weird to see them go, but this time (unlike previous "diets") I don't feel the need to hold on to them just in case I gain it back (which ALWAYS HAPPENED and then some!). I was thinking too, its usually about this time into a diet that I would start to slide and go back to old ways. It is nice to have this tool so that I cannot do that... I just can't! This is what it is all about - making lifetime healthy habits! -
STICK BLENDER OR NUTRI NINJA?
Dee2938 replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly I didnβt bother blending stuff too much. I just este soft foods during the purΓ©ed phase. Things like yogurt, cottage cheese and soups (with added protein powder). The phase goes by quickly and you eat so little, itβs almost not worth the effort of preparing anything too complicated. For example, I made a tuna salad one day, and I took about 2-3 spoonfuls as I was making it, to taste for salt and seasoning, etc. I was full by the time the darn thing was ready and I ended up putting in the fridge. That same tuna salad fed me for like 2 days. Lol. So you may not even need a blender. -
New; pre-surgery; I can't tolerate artificial sweetener
gabybab replied to lisafrommassachusetts's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Integrated supplements is sold at Target. It doesn't contain artificial sweeteners. I bought it online in sample sizes. It comes in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. It tasted decent, however after surgery I could not tolerate whey at all. I drank fairlie milk and high protein yogurt instead. Also, I think optimum nutrition sells a lightly sweetened protein without artificial sweeteners. Good luck! -
New; pre-surgery; I can't tolerate artificial sweetener
AZhiker replied to lisafrommassachusetts's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Pea protein is not sweetened and is good with soups and broths. You can find unsweetened whey protein at Spouts. I can't remember the name, however. It does have some natural vanilla flavoring, but nothing artificial. It goes well in smoothies and yogurt. Bone broth is the highest in protein as far as broths go. I think the chicken/beef/turkey combo flavor is the best. It has 10 gm protein per serving. -
Of course you can mix protein powder in with a smoothie. It's one of the best ways to get your protein in. My smoothie recipe: 1 c skim milk, 1 scoop protein powder (vanilla flavor), 2 Tb nonfat plain Greek yogurt, 1/4 c. frozen greens (spinich or mixed greens from my garden), 1/4 prickly pear juice (home harvested - lots of antioxidants), mixed berries (strawberries, blue berries, black berries). This has about 35 gm protein and is pretty low carb. Your recipe seems to have a lot of higher carb fruit and not much protein. You can mix protein powder with anything you want. I also mix it in with my yogurt, and in soups (I use a pea protein for soups, as it blends in with the flavors really well.)

This post is common - I have no idea how you can eat a 14 oz steak after this surgery I am lucky if i can eat 4oz. You are at a crossroads, same position most of us hit. You are head hungry not really hungry, sorry seems brutal but once the shock and awe was over you are losing the battle in your head not your stomach. My view is you need a nutritionist or a deep study into nutrition. The surgery is a tool it shrunk your stomach by 85% and removed the nerves that made you feel hungry. Couple of things you did not mention you should be filling up on Protein Shakes Loaded with vitamins and supplements. This will make you feel incredible without calories. I am out about 120 days and there is not a chance in hell i would try and eat steak or any solid hard food. I suggest you set a daily routine - If you read around here there are a ton of people who have posted there Routine. here is mine set by a Paid Nutritionist 1. Breakfast - 10 oz protien shake 30g protien 20 Calories, Two heaping Yogurt spoon fulls Vitamin Powder and Supplement Powder. I also add a few pieces of fruit for taste - 8 blueberrys or 3 cut peaches or a few strawberrys- You drink this over 30 min and no way you are hungry! 2. 10:00 Am - A Protien Bar - High end good quaility Bar - If i need it usually dont 3. Lunch - This is a tough one for me due to work so usually - Handful of peanuts, granola or maybe some chuncked fish or turkey 4. 2:00 Here comes another Protien shake - Usually add Peanut butter or some other funky Yogurt etc 5. 5:30 By dinner i am whipped so really have no desire to eat, usually skip about half the time - Scallops, Shrimp, Fish or a simple protein, Side is usually some small veggie 6. 40oz water a day - I CAN SAY I HATE WATER BUT IT IS A KEY TO FLUSHING OUT AND KEEPING THE KETOSIS GOING. i have this down where i can adjust my loss from .05 pounds per day up to 3/4 a day - I am also very active so that really helps me out. Summary - You have completed step one the surgery - Step two is the diet and intake - The mind is brutal on this surgery and head games to me are harder then the dang surgery to me - You said size i have gone from a size 50 pants to 42 currently and this is the reward! We all were food addicted no doubt - THe US is freakin disgusting with how we eat, Huge portions, all processed and filled with sugar. Good luck and you will get it - I have stalled a few times due to Vodka and M and M's so its not like your alone

Struggling with Water and Protein
WinterFish posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, Iβm 11 days out from my sleeve surgery and down about 30 lbs. My post-op diet is full liquids (water, clear broths, jello, protein shakes, yogurt) for 3 weeks until I can move on to thin purΓ©es. As someone who doesnβt have a sweet tooth, I struggled with all the sweet flavors of the protein shakes and yogurt at first. I have broth at dinner time to fill my salty craving and that more or less does the trick. After the first week I felt like I mostly got over that hump. Now I feel at a point where I really have no appetite at all. I had a bad day and barely got in any water or protein. I almost forgot to eat or drink. The next day I tried to stay on schedule and forced myself through the motions. I didnβt feel full or uncomfortable getting the yogurt and protein down. I know how important it is to get in my 64 oz of liquid and 60g of protein so Iβve made that priory #1. I guess my question is, do you βeatβ/drink even when you donβt feel like it? Iβm still getting used to the new feeling of everything and tuning into my body and itβs cues. Iβm assuming since Iβm still so early out that I just have to follow schedule until my body catches up. Did anyone else experience this? Having disordered eating for so long has kind of made me forget how normal people nourish themselves. I just want to get to a place where I donβt always have to be so conscious when and what Iβm eating. I used to constantly think about my next meal. I feel like not much has changed. -
Iβm not officially vegetarian but would tend to not eat meat Very often, I do have yogurt and whey protein and occasional egg now though a lot has changed after my surgery. there are good vegetarian protein options out there. For protein powders there is PEScience has a plant based protein (I use their whey/casein blend right now ) also for a RTD there is Koia protein shakes, I highly recommend cinnamon horchata. I use Ripple milk (pea protein) to mix with my protein powder that or edensoy soy milk (both unsweetened) I also mix my protein powder with TwoGood yogurt for breakfast. BariatricPal actually has vegetarian food options on their site. Iβve seen a tuna alternative called Sophieβs kitchen vegan Toona that is extremely high in protein 9 grams protein per ounce. There are so many non meat protein sources. Itβs good for purΓ©e phase. When you start with more regular foods I recommend Gardein brand. The goal is to get protein first and you donβt add complex carbs until you have lost around 75% of excess weight. Though soft vegetables are added earlier. Its really just modifying the nutrition plan with vegetarian protein sources. Ask your nutritionist if they have more information on RNY for vegetarians.

I did not expedite my timeline afraid I would tear or hurt myself as my surgeon explained how important it was to stick to the timeline for foods. I found and still find mixing a protein shake with ice, my collagen, and peanut butter powder. It really helps. Sometimes you are thirsty and it feels as hunger. I had pains below my stomach that it felt empty all the time. So the triple zero yogurt I had all the time as well as the smoothie out of the ice and shakes really helped. It does get better. Hang in there, best of luck to you all.

Thread to keep myself accountable!
lingre replied to lingre's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I did not even think about the whey protein may be tipping the scales on lactose. I will need to watch that as I was suspicious it is the Greek yogurt that triggered my bowels to get out of control today. Finally under control again. It is my left incision that is so bruised! I did email the doctor and they responded that green/yellow is on the mending side at least. They would be worried if my stool is true lily tarry because they definitely do not want blood in the stool but they do not think that is what it is. I am cuddled up to the heating pad and hope tomorrow i do not have a repeat of today! I wonder what the extra work is to cause this bruising it wraps around my entire side from that lower left incision? Thanks! -

I'm having those tarry bms too...had to buy cottenelle flushable wipes........one thing I've discovered since my surgery on oct 1, is that I don't tolerate lactose well anymore.......makes me feel bad....so....i switched to soy as my nutritionist suggested and that has helped. I'm still doing greek yoghurt in small amounts.....It could be the surgery made you a bit lactose intolerant. I'm not a big vegan but there is a lot of info out there why we shouldn't eat cows milk.... I notice the diet the doctor gave me is so dairy focused so I asked for alternatives... I get enough dairy though my whey protein need to avoid yogurt... is your lower left incision bruised? Mine is...I think that's where they do the most "work" Congrats on your weight loss! I don't trust my scale so not sure where I am..plus I still think I have so many fluids. going to order a new scale. -

Hi guys! I had been feeling pretty good the last few days and all of a sudden today I went to Trader Joeβs with my husband and have been beat down since. My bowels hate me and have been cramping, tarry poops, gassy, it makes me fe like I am going to pass out when the cramping starts. I only had a half a Protein shake and a couple tablespoons of yogurt today so I do not know what could have triggered this. Afraid to try and eat anything else now today but hungry... I stoped taking Narco pain meds yesterday - could this be withdrawal symptoms or did I just overdo it today? One of my incisions is super bruised and has an ugly green hue too. On a positive note: I weighed in at 336.6 this morning. 10 lbs down since surgery last Tuesday (6days ago). -
I have finally gotten the weight loss to slow down. I think eating purposefully around the clock helped. I also purposely eat higher calorie carbs that get calories in and don't make me feel as full for as long. The crazy thing is it's the exact opposite of what we should do during the weight loss phase. The carbs I have are 1/3 cup of granola cereal over yogurt or mixed with 1/3 cup milk. It gives me around 150 calories and then I can eat yogurt, an egg or 1-2 oz. of meat 45 minutes later. If i only eat meat and veggies I am too full to get in other foods and only get 1000 calories max. I was loosing on that and wanted to slow it down. Granted I am not eating ice cream and cookies but still high calories and carbs and it does worry me that this could cause issues but mentally i still feel like eating is a chore and if I could I wouldn't eat a fraction of what i am now . I am hoping as I can tolerate more volume i can make healthier choices. I also can eat a 230 calorie packet of Bevita breakfast bars in under 10 minutes and eat again 45 minutes later. I have managed to get in 1400 calories the past 2 weeks. I also drink 2% milk and cook my spinach and egg in olive oil, and eat a Tbs of peanut butter, and have a RX bar during the day just to get extra calories.

Food Before and After Photos

Iβm not sure how they would reheat. I make little βegg bakesβ that I make in the oven on the weekend and heat in the microwave for a minute during the week for breakfast. If youβre interested in doing that I just cook meat and sautΓ© in some veggies then add that mixture to a muffin tin, top with some kinda shredded cheese and then pour in a mixture of egg and plain Greek yogurt with spices. Bake at 350 for 25-30 min. -
CHEWABLE MULTIVITAMINS???
ahillig replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just take 1 capsule 3 times a day of the Celebrate Multi-Complete 45 with Iron, it has everything you need, minus calcium. Because my diet is still largely based on dairy like cheese, yogurt, milk, etc I'm not on a calcium supplement yet but I'll probably start that soon as I'm starting to branch out from that now that I'm on soft foods. -
Iβm having a bit of a sense of humour failure!! Iβm on skimmed milk, yogurt and one (chicken or fish) plus leafy veg or salad meal a day. How are you doing?! Iβm getting nervous- still have a week at work - my brain is doing βthis time next week.....β stuff! Iβm travelling to Turkey with my mum for this from UK as am paying for the surgery. Are you nervous?

Liquids isn't that the first phase of mostly protein drinks? Sugar free liquids? Maybe some liquid yogurt I thought

I had the shakes for the most part the first 2 weeks, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, and plain greek yogurt. The second stage I hate part-skim ricotta cheese. I tried cottage cheese but my stomach rejected it with one small bite. Greek yogurt (lite&fit by Dannon) 80cal., pudding, outshine fruit bars, applesauce, blended vegetable soup/minestrone (took out the pasta), pureed pinto beans. I still had to have 2 shakes a day in week 3 and 4. I just started on soft foods on Thursday. Tried plain scrambled eggs. I felt like I ate cement. I talked to 2 people who work at the clinic and had the sleeve and they suggested scrambling the eggs with ricotta cheese and using mashed up avocado and salsa. So I'm going to try that tomorrow. They said the stomach wants the texture of smooth foods. She thinks adding the avocado with trick my stomach with the texture and the cheese will add moisture. I get filled up really quickly. But I'm not having many problems. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

There are plain greek yogurts with WAY less carbs and calories out there. Fage Total 0% fat for 1 whole cup has - 23g Protein, 7 carbs 0 Fat. Try switching up your yogurt. Chiobani is not the best for what you are trying to do and has too much sugar too. Skyr icelandic yogurt is great too.
