    First 5k Post Surgery

Good for you! I have recently been having thoughts of participating in some kind of organized event. For me it would be walking but I'm a pretty fast walker. I can hardly believe this is me thinking up exercise opportunities -- such a new way of thinking! Good luck and have fun with the training. You have so much to celebrate -- here's to a new year filled with health and happiness.

@TX Stella Good Luck with your surgery!! Believe me you will be so surprised at how fast time will fly by!!
  4. I have found that we eat out 2-3 times a week . We both work, so as much as we try not to eat out it just happens. Now with no fast food type food, wow, the food bills are high. So I decided to tackle how to eat out for less today. Today I ordered a bunch of gift certs online for gifts only at restaurants who give you back 20% in a bonus gift card. They seem to only offer this special at Christmas time, and last year I did the same thing but didn't get enough and ran out by March and really missed that 20% discount card. I did it in an organized fashion figuring how many times during the next 12 mos we could eat at that restaurant. I did it for Pappas (usually seafood), Outback Steakhouse, and Carrabbas Italian. I couldn't order some restaurants bc they didn't have a special, shame on them (no Red Lobster, TX Land & Cattle, etc). But then sort of by accident I found a website called restaurant.com that had discounted gift certs for so many restaurants. A lot of them were independent ones that we go to anyway, and others were new. But I bought like $300 of gift certs that will give me like $750 of free food at these restaurants. I don't know if this works in every area, but the norm was to pay $10 for a $25 gift cert and agree to spend $35 on food. Or like at a steak rest get a $50 gift cert for like $20 and agree to spend $100, which we could do at a nice steak restaurant if we had the whole family. I actually spent $120 at my favorite Chinese Restaurant and got $300 of food credit. It says you can't use more than once a month, so heh, I bought one for each month. Felt like a safe bet considering we've been eating there since my oldest son was born. I could use suggestions too on how to order at restaurants so that the family food bill is not as much, and wonder if anyone has suggestions. Between the cost of groceries and restaurants I feel like we spend too much of our take home pay on food, and I want to cut it down. I've never been a coupon shopper in grocery stores, but if anyone knows a good and easy way to do this I'd like that too. Please share your ideas.

    Sudden tightness- but why???

Thanks guys. I will hold off on the fasting for now. I still feel quite gassy and tight. I'm also wondering if mb it had to do with the gum I chewed the other day. Anyway, I just hope the feeling goes away soon it's not fun.

    Hello!

Catherine is right. Catherine, Ive read your blog and it has really helped me understand what to expect. When im having doubts about this(especially since its coming so fast,March 3rd) I like to come here to read about how successful people have been. This reassures me that Im making the right decision. Thanks to Catherine and everyone else on here for giving your perspectives on this procedure every step of the way.

    Discouraged 8mo

Excellent advice. Read about ADF (Alternate Day Fasting) and Intermittent Fasting. There is tremendous research about EXTENDING LIFE EXPECTANCY as well as losing weight. It has nothing to do with fad diets. It's about living longer and healthier. A great start is a documentary called Eat Fast Live Longer

    Bumpy, ropey incisions?

Hey Girlie- What you are feeling are the stitches your surgeon used to close the superficial fascia layer of your abdomen. No worries. They will eventually absorb and dissolve. They're likely combined with adhesions (scar tissue). If you no longer have scabs on the incision sites, you can massage the sites with some Vitamin E (just prick some capsules) in a circular motion, then side to side, and finally, in a kind of deep back and forth motion to loosen up the tissue. (Just don't go fast. The idea is to loosen the underlying scar tissue, not to create friction.) Eventually, it should go back to normal. It might feel a little sore in the beginning to massage them, but you will find yourself doing it more and more often, which is actually beneficial. HTH -m
  9. Karen Scott, regret will do us no good now. I am sure your sleeve is not failing me. I see people with 75 pounds of weight loss in 5 months and I have felt that I am not losing fast enough to be where they are in 5 months, but I have to realize that roughly 1 pound a day ain't bad. After all, I wasn't losing it that fast preop. Don't put the cart before the horse. It may be a blessing in disguise that you are losing at a slow pace. Less dramatic excess skin!!! If I am at or near my goal weight this time next year, I will be good. We have to think long term or this whole experience will get to us. Trust me, I totally understand how you feel. I am almost 2 weeks out and I was wondering why I am only 11 pounds lighter than on my surgery day. Then I realized that hey, I am only 11 days post op, that's a pound a day. So I should be down 30 pounds in a month. Not bad! Hang in there Karen. You will do fine and you will look back in a year and wonder where the weight went. LOL

    Why chew?

I am the same way.... Eat to fast and don't chew enough. Even your bad habits are an inspiration because you are still successful. I work on mindful eating every day and it my biggest challenge of this whole process. I actually think I get less calories because of this. The slower I eat the more I can eat which at 7 months would be a good thing. Your body needs fuel. I am going to keep working at it.

    Post sleever today

four days tops. Then you will be wondering how am I going to drink and eat enough. I am 2 weeks post-op and still can only get in 3-400 cal a day. Unbeliveable isn't it. That was the amount that I ate at a fast food sandwich and then added the fries. I have lost 27 lbs already so it will get better keep your eye on the weight falling off.
  12. Over the last two or so days, I notice my throat gurgling when I consume full liquids. My guess it's gas, because I can hear my intestines firing off as well. There's no nausea, and only slight stomach pressure, nothing too bad. Is this something that's normal? I just want to make sure it's not a sign that I'm eating too fast/about to regurgitate.

    new poster sick

@chris1985 hey dude/aka newbie!!! I agree @Diana_in_Philly - eating too fast is very bad. you must slllllow it down. chew into small bites, THEN swallow. No gulping allowed!! (people have been shot for less!!) use small (baby) utensils, that will help FORCE you to eat slowly. put utensil down between bites. then start again with eating. DON'T drink any water while you are eating anything! don't drink 30 minutes before you eat, then wait 30 minutes after you eat til you drink. find a support group in your area. (doc should help you/or office) maybe you could make a friend, then you can help each other. this board is very helpful, informative. continue to ask your questions, you'll there are bariatric books with recipes too. one example is Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies lots of information on various web sites!! KNOWLEDGE is POWER!! Good luck - kathy

I don't want to embrace this stall!

I'm not sure what the basis of that the book's hypothesis on weight loss stalls is, because most doctors agree that weight loss is not linear. There are many documented instances of stalls occurring during long term fasts (15-30 days), so it's certainly not that they are always caused by too many calories, too many carbs, too much Protein causing gluconeogenesis (your liver will convert any excess dietary protein to glucose). Often a stall in the absence of cheating is accompanied by movement on the measuring tape as your body re-proportions your body fat. Eating more sodium, for instance, can increase Water retention. Eating inflammatory foods can do the same. Not resting properly can devoid your body of the chance to heal inflammation and cause the scale to pause. Stalls are more like a month or 6 weeks with no off plan eating and no weight loss, not a couple of days.
  15. I am thrilled to report that the first 50 pounds are gone. I could not have imagined I could get here so quickly! Three months and six days from surgery is twice as fast as I expected. Sure, I have walked my feet off, but I have never lost weight with so little effort! I have this amazing sense of peace that I will get to my goal and maintain a stable weight for the first time in my adult life. I love this band.
  16. Hate to say it, but the VST site is dominating by threads about slow losers. You hardly ever see a thread about a fast loser. So it is hard to say or answer your question. I would say a new VST reader would form the wrong opinion if all they read are all the slow loser threads. A lot of these people are losing 10, 15 or 30 lbs in 30 days! Come on, how does that even qualify as slow losing? Anything more than 2-3 lbs a week should be considered perfectly acceptable. Later on, 2 lbs a week is very good as you get closer to goal. Sometimes a whole month may go by where the scale does nothing. People need not be so hard on themselves. Take one day at a time and celebrate on the small successes along the way!! And when weight loss does slow down, change is required. More water, more protein or more intense exercise for example.

    SO MANY DIFFERENT STORIES

I was afraid about hunger and not being able to eat certain things too. But my hunger is very well controlled both by the band and the amount of protein I feed my body. As far as eating things like before I was a french fry and pizza junkie, I simply can't remember the last time I ate or even wanted a fry. And as far as pizza I eat thin crust now and as much protein and veggies on it I can. I also only eat a couple small pieces not 1/2 or all of a pizza. Food getting stuck hurts, avoid it at all costs. U can breathe but it feels like something is poking u in your heart and sometimes can last a long time. Just chew good and don't eat fast.

    Let's Walk....

I walk around our city park. One time around is 1.25 miles. I started out going half way around. Then I moved up to one time around. Now I am going around 2 times. It took me 3 months to work up to 2 times around. Yesterday I started incorporating jogging (fast walking) into my routine. I would job a while and walk a while. I still made it around 2 times. Unfortunately i am not able to do this everyday. Between my work and school schedule I also have to take my daughter to dance class 3 times a week. She is too young to just drop her off so I have to sit and wait on her. So, I can only walk about 3-4 times a week. I hope to increase my laps to 3 starting next week. Right now I am at a stand still with my weight loss so I'm hoping that if I increase my walking it will jump start my loosing again. I haven't lost any weight in about 2 weeks. I'm getting frustrated!!! I'm making sure I'm getting all my protein in. My water is another story. I get almost all of it in everyday but it's hard!!! I wish I weighed what myfitnesspal says I would weigh 5 weeks ago!!!
  19. A lot of people say they are tired. I felt ok once I was consistently hitting protein and fluid goals. Nausea has definitely increased a lot, though mostly around eating or drinking too fast. Vitamins on an empty stomach also cause nausea so be aware of that.

    Success So Far

As far as I am concerned there is no slow or fast, all weight loss is to be celebrated, that said, there is too much focus on scale weight, we neglect too many times the non scale successes..one being improved health and frame of mind, sounds like you have achieved both, well done, keep up the great work.
  21. Hi. I'm scheduled for surgery next Tues. However, I received a phone call informing me that my PTT levels were increased. ( For those who may not know; this test allows drs. to see how fast a person clots if they are to become injured) I re-did my bloodwork today. Has anyone else encountered the same problem?? I just don't want my surgery date pushed back.
  22. My surgeon also insisted it be removed at the time of surgery for all WLS patients. He did not have to worry about me because 17 years ago I went on a low fast diet, lost 75lbs in 3 months and my gallbladder went crazy. By the time they figured out what the hell was so wrong with me (I could only eat boiled potatoes and dry Cheerios, everything else made me sick) My gall bladder was so full of stones and infected that they had to do an open gall bladder surgery. Back then it was 3 nights in the hospital and 12 weeks off of work for me. I of course had them bring my work home which was great. I still remember my general surgeon telling me to be careful after having it removed that likely I would begin to gain weight again. He wasn't wrong.....within a 2 years I gained back all that weight and added another 25lbs to it before I decided to go on the Atkins diet. LOL I lost all that weight and then gained it all back and then some.....can you say yo yo diets.....don't work. I finally stopped trying to lose weight because it was literally going to kill me. That is how I ended up at 310lbs.

    McD's breakfast.. am I stuck?

Always a good idea to do your own eggs unless its a restraunt instead of fast food. I have trouble with fast food eggs so never do it! That feeling your having is probably a full feeling. its different after your banded. you dont feel overly stuffed but you just have it sitting in your esophgus and its annoying to me more than anything else. I did that for a while and thought i was stuck so i would make myself vomit. turns out i was losing poorly and went to dr he said ""your full! leave it be. lol""
  24. I noticed my buttons are back too but fast reply still isn't working boo!

    Why Do I Keep Spitting

When did you come home from the hospital? And what are you drinking? Is it teeny tiny sips? 3 days out is still very new. You may be drinking too much, too fast?
