  1. Call your insurance and ask for the wording specific to your plan. Everyone’s plan is different. Just call and get it straight from the horse’s mouth. I’ve heard some say they can gain more than 6lbs, while others say nothing about weight gain during nutrition. Best of luck!

    Treats

@@tracy amanda. Eating the occasional treats vary from person to person, so the decision to occasionally eat unhealthy choices is up to you. What has worked for me: I ate very strictly while I was in the "losing phase". I never had any treats or even the occasional cracker, rice, bread. However, once I entered my maintenance phase I incorporated some healthy carbs such as whole grain rice, sweet potatoes, beets, more fruit, etc. I also will eat the occasional treats such as cookies, chocolate, doughnuts, etc. I have always logged my food so I have been able to see patterns and identify how many calories and carbs I can safely eat before the weight gain starts. For some eating unhealthy carbs can be a trigger to go down a slippery slope. However, if you are able to eat them and immediately get back on your normal plan then the occasional treat isn't bad.
  3. The first week went great. Lost 13 pounds. Went from 311 to 299. Then the second week started and I was up a pound. I thought no big deal, probably Water retention or something. Then the next day I was up another. And the next, another. I am on day 12 and am at 303. Making it look like I've only lost 8 pounds. What in the world is going on? I have stuck to plan. 2 meals of 1-2 slimfast shakes, 1 meal of lean Protein and non starchy vegetables. I also get "free foods" of cucumber, pickle, sf Popsicles. I have been meeting goal of 64 oz of Fluid a day. I don't know what is wrong and it's making me sad and frustrated.
  4. I was just sleeved on November 19th. I weighed myself on the 20th and had GAINED 12 pounds!!! As of today I've lost 6 of that. My original thoughts were to not weigh at all until my 2 week appointment, but someone commented that I looked thinner already so I was curious. HA Anyone else weigh themselves right after surgery, to find a gain?? I'm sure it's just Water weight, but STILL!!! That's not what I was wanting to see... Also, my incisions are starting to itch... healing?? The largest of the incisions made a "dent" in my stomach. It is so weird and gross looking. Did this happen to anyone else??
  5. Yesterday while visiting my cousin we started going through our family photo album going back 40+ years. My weight gains was chronicled so well. From being a chubby baby/toddler to a skinny pre adolescent. Healthy fun active high school years. Hot young youth years. Somewhere in my mid twenties after marriage the weight just crept on rapidly. Pics from these years I see a smiling lips but there's sadness in the eyes. A pic not only speaks a thousand words but it also brings out some strong emotions. Those years have gone past now. A new healthier and sexier me is starting to emerge slowly but surely. Will use some of these to motivate me.
  6. Everyone is going to have a different experience. But looking at the "averages", it seems a decent number of people develop GERD from the sleeve. And quite a few people don't get any dumping at all. I've had exactly 1 incident of dumping, in over 6 months. And that was with tomato soup. I can eat pretty much anything I want at this point with zero dumping. I do get crampy here and there if I eat something I know I shouldn't, but I don't have any issues with any sweeteners. I went with the band back in 2011... and was revised to RNY this past March. Honestly the best thing I've done. I have a friend that was sleeved and he also had to get revised to the bypass due to complication with the sleeve. Also, the sleeve is 100% non-reversible. The Bypass is reversible under certain conditions, it's a risky reversal, but it does happen, you cannot undo the sleeve since 90% of your stomach ends up in the trash. Also, long term research keeps showing that the bypass out performs the sleeve in all metrics. Patients lose more, keep it off longer, have lower rebounding weight gain. It is 100% your decision, but my 2 cents, go with the bypass.

    Pre-op weight gain

When is your surgery? 6 pounds isn't an enormous weight gain so I don't think it'll make a big difference but you should probably ask your surgeon about it if you're worried he/she will cancel. I was stupid and went on a "last hurrah" before surgery and gained a few pounds. Got a little scolding from my surgeon and 2 weeks pre-op I cleaned up my act so I wouldn't risk liver enlargement and I was fine. That being said, every surgeon is different so you really should consult with your doctor to find out how much weight gain he/she thinks is acceptable before surgery.

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

This will sound crazy but I thought I would share. I was diagnosed with Pseudo Tumor in 2002. It was really bad and at that point I had lost 75% of my peripheral vision. (My vision was restored once I had spinal taps to reduce the pressure) Over the next 2 years I suffered with debilitating headaches. Many medications were tried and the majority of the time I was in a major fog from the medications. The doctor wanted to do a shunt but I refused. I had spinal taps to relieve the pressure. (55 in a 2 year span) I lost enough weight to put me at a normal BMI and still suffered symptoms. I also suffered from migranes on top of the pressure headaches. In 2005 I had a Hysterectomy to help with the migraines. My Neuro said it wouldn't help with the migraines but my Gyn disagreed. Now I gained major weight after the surgery. Well...... since I had the hysterectomy I haven't had another episode with the Pseudo Tumor even with the weight gain. Not sure if it was a fluke or a miracle. Today I no longer take any meds for the Pseudo Tumor and I am working on the weight gain with a Realize Band.
  9. So over the last three months I've gained ten kilos back after losing 25 kilos since my banding three years ago. My doctor thinks I had too much fluid in my band so we have been trying to find the right balance for the past month with no success so far. This has been really depressing for me and to make matters worse now I'm pregnant and so terrified of the potential weight gain that it's overtaking my excitement of the baby coming. Can anybody relate to this or have any advice?
  10. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1993. I've been on medication ever since and regardless of how much weight I've gained or lost, the need for medication hasn't changed. I still go in every 12 months for re-evaluation and testing-- and sometimes more often if I'm feeling like it needs to be adjusted. I was banded in December, and though I've only lost 50 pounds, I'm currently weighing in at my lowest in 15 years. Once the medication is properly adjusted, I feel much more like my old self. I still struggled with carrying extra weight and all that entailed until being banded. I was more tired, less likely to engage in anything physical--just getting up every day was a struggle at 300 pounds. While I'm sure my thyroid contributed to my initial weight gain, I can't claim that I got to 300 because of it.....my meds are on target and I still kept the weight. I had to change my lifestyle, and only the band helped me do that. Good luck. It does take a while to get your medication on the right track--like upwards of 6 months, but it will make a huge difference. It just requires patience. Hope it all works out for you.
  11. I had sleeve surgery in April 2015 and I was doing great. I was 235 on my surgery day and I got to my lowest post surgery weight last year, 152. I am now 173 and completely stuck. My goal has always been 135 but now I just want to get back to 152. I felt and looked healthy there. I feel gross and like a complete failure now. My question is how do you continue to lose weight? Any tips to keep motivated? I don’t know anyone who has had wls surgery that I can ask or confide in. Thanks, Tiff
  12. I'm trying to get perspective on the big picture of 2013. I started the year at 155, which has been my weight give or take 3# since about 10 mo post-op. In March I found out I was pregnant. I debated having my band adjusted early because I couldn't imagine the discomfort of doing it with a distended belly. My OB didn't think I should adjust it at all, but I wanted to ask a band surgeon. I moved 500 miles from the city I had my surgery in, so I had to find a new dr. She agreed that we should let it out and so we took 2cc. I had a couple weeks of ridiculous indiscretion when I realized I could eat more than a bite of hamburger. I wasn't junking out on bad food, but portion sizes were not modest. At any rate, I realize that started a really negative spiral. I miscarried in May and had my band retightened the second week of June. I'd put on 10 pounds between March and June. Since then I have been back to much more proper habits, but my weight is still gradually coming back. I'm hovering around 170 in spite of moderate portions and a primarily vegetarian/whole food, mostly home cooked diet. I spent all of Nov and Dec being all the more hyper vigilant. I indulged in desserts 2-3 times. Had a few extra glasses of wine than normal and still saw the scale creep up 3 pounds. I don't know if this sounds absurd or not, but I'm wondering if my indiscretions of spring have permanently reset something. The other concern is that this dr used a different technique for accessing my port and I can't help wondering if something went wrong quietly. Since my refill in June I have made a serious effort to moderate portions and such but I am hungrier than I used to be and things that used to get stuck don't anymore (like bread...but I'm still not eating it often, just experimenting because of the confusion). Any insight? Other than weight gain I can't say there are any other "symptoms" of something serious.
  13. only allows you to have a period every so often? I am on of you who goes through the hard time of trying to get anything down during my PMS time. Having fewer periods would help there...but... I don't need the pill (tied tubes) and I am worried about side effects and weight gain (I gained weight on the regular pill) at least I blame it on that!!! Anyon have updated infor?
  14. I had my surgery 8/14 and I am up a few pounds. Anyone else experience this?
  15. I'm 2 years post op. Had horrible time the past 2 years with strictures, ulcers, and revision surgery last October. Now that I can eat I'm starving all the time. My start weight was 245 Got down to 123 now I'm at 156 surgeons goal was 145. I have fallen off the wagon any advice to get back up and lose about 20 lbs. I feel fat again and its a mental struggle now! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-J120A using the BariatricPal App

    30lb weight gain

You are not alone - See same topic below https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/424799-help-weight-gain-2-years-out-is-it-the-meds/?tab=comments#comment-4769639 https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/424777-struggling-regain/?tab=comments#comment-4769516
  17. I was banded 14 months ago and have lost 88lbs. In the last month I have gained 4 back. =( I have no motivation. I was working out with a personal trainer 2-3x a week, but that was a 6 month plan that ended in September. I haven't done much for working out since then. I am also not eating great. I was still losing up til the first of November and then the 4lbs happened. I am an emotional eater so the weight gain leads me to bad places. Ugh. I need to get out of this rut. I am having oatmeal for breakfast today. We will see where the rest of the day takes me...

    Cortisol and other things

I know I had all the tests, but my cortisol was not high. From what I remember, a high cortisol level defintely promotes weight gain and I believe is usually treatable.

    Question?

He was less than professional. All he needed to say was let's get you back on track. I'm sorry your feeling hurt. I don't do any follow ups with my bariatric program. I get my check up and blood work up from my family doctor. The great thing is your not on your own. You can contact another bariatric program out of your area. The dietician can mail or email you the food plan instructions. Many people here on bariatric pal are willing to share their diet instructions for you to use. None of us are perfect. Many of us have had weight gain. Getting back on track can be done. You have our support.

    Saw the Endo today

Well, today I saw the Endo, but it didn't go quite how I would have liked. Becaue I don't have the strechmarks, and because I work out I don't have the thin arms and legs, he doesn't think I have cushings, but he ordered the 24 hour urine test and three other tests. (my husband has my PDA with that information). I do know they are testing my testosterone because of the increased body hair, the increased facial hair (6 laser hair removal treatments and it is all growing back) and the male patterned baldnes, he thinks I might have something wrong, like a masculinizing tumor, but probably not cushings. He wasn't interested in my sudden and unexplained weight gains, my fatigue, or my inability to lose weight. I think the man weighs 150 soaking wet. He's going to send me to a doctor that specializes in metabolic issues, although she mostly sees professional atheletes. He kept refering to me being obese (no kidding) and thinks that is why I'm having all the problems. He thinks I should work harder at losing weight. (hello! I had WLS for crying out loud, I work out, and I've managed to lose 15 pounds net since April. I'm not terribly optimistic, but he didn't dismiss me altogether either. He did tell me to stop taking the thyroid medication. He looked at my test results from Jan and couldn't believe the other doctor put me on thyroid medication. This doesn't mean that I don't have Cushing's, it just means that I won't know until after I get the test results back from the lab, and until I finish peeing in a bottle for 24 hours. Oh joy that one... I just sort of thought that after reading all that I've been able to read about Cushing's that some of the major symptoms that I have would have been looked at, and not brushed aside. He wasn't interested in my journals, my before and now pix to see the difference and I was disapointed at that. The Cushings's board said to bring all that stuff, and he didn't even want to see any of it.

    Epiphany

I have thought the same thing at times (why didn't I have the bypass). My sister had the bypass and what happened to her (as the statistics show) is she lost a bunch of weight and then gain a little back. With the band, it is much slower and steady but I don't think there is the weight gain at the end (because you have always been on solid foods). Anyway, my doctor says that after 3 years, the band and bypass end up being about the same weight loss.
  22. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for sharing . . . that is great to know. I am also still being very, very careful with my diet so I feel like I will be on the good side with weight gain. So far I am still losing, slowly, but losing.
  23. I was told repeatedly that I could not worry about my weight during pregnany, and it made sense, but it was hard to accept because I was afraid of excessive weight gain. I had jut gotten within reach of my goal, and was terrified of having to take any steps back. You really do not want to lose fat during pregnancy. Not gaining is one thing, but losing fat weight is something entirely different and lots of research out there indicates it may actually be dangerous (excessive ketones in the blood, overall nutriitional health, etc.) On average the baby's "support system" will weigh about 20 pounds. The average term delivery weighs about 7.6 lbs. So that's close to 30 pounds just on the actual pregnancy. It's also normal for the body to try and hold some fat. My OB's office recommends 30 - 35 lbs as an overall gain to target through pregnancy. I'm right in that range, and honestly would not feel comfortable if I was under, even though I really fought gaining in the beginning. I can still wear pre-pregnancy clothes as long as they don't have closed fabric over the baby area, or are stretchy - shoulders, back, arms, etc. still fit the same... so I have no reason to think I've gained any sizes even though I've gained quite a bit of weight. Early on I told myself I would gain 15 lbs. What I based that on was just psychological/emotional, not medical/healthy. Eating well, that quickly got pushed aside. It seemed like every month the scale was up a few more pounds, regardless of how careful I had been. And IMO that's how it should be. Unless I go past term I will deliver this month and my "goal" (I hate goals, but for lack of a better word) is to be within 5 lbs of my pre-pregnancy weight by the start of the new year. We'll see how that goes.

    Exercise and weight

Sunday I did the Insanity workout. I was so sore Monday and Tuesday and I weigh in today and I am up a little over a pound! Can t be related to how sore I was? My food I take was the same so I know it can't be my eating. It's not that time of month. I know I shouldn't be so worried about a pound but I'm just wondering if exercise causes weight gain? When I was working out I felt fine...I went at my own pace and I took breaks and drank Water. Thanks in advance!
