How many times a week or month do you weigh yourself?
Kindle replied to gamecockfan864's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only weighed myself a couple times/month in the beginning. I can actually remember each one.... day 1 of preop diet, day 11 of preop (to make sure I was losing what my surgeon required) surgery day postop day 5 (when I returned from Mexico) postop Day 11 (New Years Day) 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 10 weeks, and 3 months. Don't even know if I had the infamous 3 week stall! But I do know I gained 3 pounds between weeks 6 and 7 and still weighed the same at 10 weeks. Then randomly lost 13 pounds by the 3 month mark. Not weighing myself drove one of my friends crazy. She had bypass 8 years ago and she weighs daily. She couldn't believe I never knew my weight when she'd ask. It was fun torturing her ???? Ever since then I've weighed once/week so I have something to post on the challenges on here. I don't own a scale, so I weigh at work on the dog scale (after Breakfast and coffee), fully clothed with shoes or boots. No clue what my actual naked weight is. For me, NSV's mean so much more than numbers -

Absolutely, Positively a NSV!!! I give myself a pat on the back every time I skip the bread basket or the chip bowl when I meet friends and family for dinner! Its definitely a victory for someone who had no self control over those before! Feels fantastic! Why wouldn't it be a NSV?! -

NSV- Size Extra Small!
Healthy_life2 replied to AvaFern's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
what an amazing thing to go in and find out you are in fact a size XS. I had just posted the same NSV right after you:). Congrats on all the work you put in. -
So, for the longest time I didn't actually know what an NSV was, so one day I finally asked and I was like, ohhhhhh, it would have been helpful to know that earlier in the process! I have based my successes largely on the scale numbers. Getting under 200 was exciting, getting under 137 when I was no longer classified as “overweight” was great, and currently I am floating right above 129, which was my original goal weight. I go from 130-132 and then back to 130 and then back to 131 or 132. It is frustrating, however I am now complaining about weighing, on a bad day, 132 pounds, and that is something I should really be happy about. Past the fact that I have largely focused on scale-victories, in the last week I have realized that I now fit into all of the extra small shirts, even in the juniors section, which has resulted in buying all kinds of stuff I don’t really need, exclusively because I am totally stoked to be an XS (on the top at least). I bought a new pair of those Nike leggings in a size small, which made me ecstatic, but then I found a matching jacket, in an extra small, and it fits perfectly- not like I’m busting out of it like I imagined. I also picked up a sweatshirt that I held up and thought “there is no way this is an adult xs, this wouldn’t fit a child” and yet when I tried it on, not only did it fit, but it was kind of baggy! Given that I am currently annoyed with my lack of scale victory, particularly given I am so close (and yet seemingly so far) from goal, I thought I would share for the first time an NSV and potentially remind myself that feeling good about my size is not something that needs to be purely dictated by the scale.

Okay, I am not sure if this is what you would classify as an "NSV" but I went out for the first time with my family tonight to dinner. I totally did fine having Soup ( still on liquid diet ) and I even brought home a TO GO BOX!! Nobody's food bothered me like I thought maybe it would, it was our favorite little taqueria in town. I dont recall ever EVER bringing home to go boxes!!! Handled the soup broth like a champ and brought home enough for the next day!! Very Happy Gal! Cheers! -

I was sleeved on 10/27/14 No complications to speak of. I was amazed at how well everything went. If I had to pick something it would be 5 days after surgery I tried a shake that did NOT agree with me. Not really a complication but it knocked me down the whole day and I remember how bad I felt. I will be 3 months post op on Monday and the NSV's I have had so far are great!! - I was in a very tight size 28 jean, I am now wearing size 20 skinny jeans and loving it - bought my first pair of tall black boots and have been wearing them with my skinnies and leggings - I still squeal out loud everytime I slide into a booth and there is between 3-5 inches of space - I now have choices in what footwear I will wear each day, instead of just my flip flops - the energy I have is amazing, no more sleeping in till the afternoon time, when I wake up I get up - I rode my bike for the first time since we moved it out here 12 years ago - I can get my wedding rings on normally now, no more having to put lotion on my hands to get them on - my 15 yr old daughter can get her arms all the way around me to hug me - I am looking forward to our vacation in March able to fit in the plane seat with no extender, and decide what rides I want to go on, not just what ones will I fit on These are just a few that I can think of right now. I cannot imagine what my list will look like as I lose more weight. I know that I am at a weight right now that a lot of people start their journey at, but my starting weight was 314.8 with my highest ever being 324. Good luck with your journey marbelvsg, follow your docs orders, get your Protein in and drink your liquids and you will do o great!!

There are SO many answers to both of those questions. May I suggest you visit the complications subforum and/or do a search for "leaks" "infection" "complications" "stricture" "GERD" "ER", etc. As for the second question, do a search for "NSV" and you will find several long threads with dozens of examples. As for me, 1) no complications 2) starting a couple weeks out to the present, here are a few of my NSV's....My rings fit (then got too big). Had to buy a new saddle to fit my tiny butt. My horse is happy. Can wear tall boots. Went from size 22 relaxed fit stretch jeans to 5/6 skinny jeans and I can shop in regular stores for clothes. I feel GREAT and haven't taken any pain Meds or NSAIDS since surgery. My BP is normal. I have no nutritional deficiencies. My feet don't hurt, my knees don't hurt, I can can wear skinny leggings (and they look good). First normal PAP in 7 years (healthy diet boosted immune system and cleared my HPV infection), Everything I do is so easy now.....climbing stairs, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, riding bike. I can fit in an airplane seat with room to spare. I can cross my legs and sit Indian style. My true weight is 50 pounds less than what my drivers license says. Shaving my legs (and other parts) takes a lot less time. My grocery bill and restaurant tabs are a fraction of what they used to be.

Hello! I should be getting sleeved by mid-March. I am excited and nervous. Can some of you please share two things with me: 1. What (if any) complications did you have and were they remedied? 2. Any NSV's you have had and about how long into the process you had them?

Frustrated in Kansas!
BLERDgirl replied to applegal79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really depends on the person. If you can stand daily or weekly weighing without freaking out, then go for it. If you can't then stay off the scale and look at other NSV. Taking your measurements (neck, boobs, waist & hips) is a good alternative. I didn't get my first weight check until my 2 week checkup and was pleasantly surprised. However I know from previous weight loss attempts that the scale makes me crazy. Instead of focusing on eating properly and getting exercise I am worried about what the scale says. I therefore limit it to once a month, preferably at the doctor's office. -
Getting the motivation to start working out
lisacaron replied to igotthis98's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
@@igotthis98 Way to go!!! Just keep that enthusiasm high, I love that your best friend is going with you just don't make it a competition or comparison contest OK? It can happen too easily and then it goes from motivating to defeating. Keep each other honest, and on task but each do what you can for YOU and don't worry that she can lift more your can run faster etc. For many many years when I was young I used to work out all the time. I was a dancer and practiced ballet nearly 4 hours a day every day with dance teachers and competition coaches. When I stopped I really stopped and there are days now when my motivation to get my butt to the gym and push myself into that familiar soreness that I remember all too well is not only lacking but it's just down right resistance!!! I feel 100 times better when I get there and I get it done, but I fight it every step of the way. I have a trainer and I have been working with him since July and I told him DON"T let me cancel on you!! Some days I have to pull the plug because I am ill or hurt, but I can all too easily get into a pattern and just stop. He's pretty good at keeping me accountable to myself and getting my there and getting it moving once I get there without shaming me or making me feel guilty when I need to take a break. This is most definitely a wonderful NSV got get 'em girl!!! -
Getting the motivation to start working out
igotthis98 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I'm posting this as a NSV, because for me (and I'm sure I'm not alone on this), motivation to start working out has always been my biggest struggle with weight loss... Today, I signed up with a personal trainer! I am going to be doing the sessions with my best friend, which is great because we are really good at supporting and motivating each other. I have always been scared about starting to work out because I've always told myself that I can't, that I'll do it wrong, I'll end up hurting myself, blah, blah, blah! I am putting my foot down now though, no more fear! I'm putting my big girl panties on (sidenote: must buy smaller big girl panties as the current ones are falling off), sucking it up and refusing to feed into the excuses I've always created for myself. I start next week, wish me luck! -
Managing my expectations
joatsaint replied to kimmeesue's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I wasn't a fast loser, so I was only losing 13 or so pounds a month on average. But I was on target for the weight loss speed my doctor wanted me at. The #1 piece of advice is, expect to hit a stall. Especially the infamous 3rd week stall post-op. Most of us hit it, just stick with your eating and exercise programs and the weight will start dropping again. I wasn't able to do a lot of exercise the 1st 3 or 4 months. I had lots of problems with my feet hurting if I walked too far. I started off small and just worked my way up. By the 4th month, I was walking a few miles a day. This is my blog post about my plan to go from 0 to 5 miles per day. http://www.bariatricpal.com/blogs/entry/31216-nsv-2-you-best-step-off-b-hatch/ -
The Best Thing About Being Sleeved!
Dr-Patient replied to sukik's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just sharing: Yesterday, the UPS delivery man brought boxes to my front door. I opened the garage door for him to stack them there, and he got to see me full-length. He said (hesitantly, but with big eyes), " Are you...the same lady who's been living here?" (I've lived in this house for 19 years) "Yes, it's me." "Oh my God. You look fantastic! I would not have recognized you!" [eyes and mouth open wide in awe.] I was actually wearing my old, oversized baggy (and raggedy) sweat pants and an old blouse (with a hole in it)--my 'cleaning the house' outfit. I held them out to show how baggy everything was, and said "I know I look a mess with this stuff on, but yea, 70 pounds gone," I said. He said, "I can only imagine how you look with other stuff on because you look fabulous." It was nice to hear that; and he obviously remembered me because he reminded me of some past deliveries he'd made to my home; he rememberd my line of work, etc. 'Twas a nice NSV on a rainy, foggy day. -
Everyone has them. Stalls can last from a few weeks to months. Make sure you're getting in all your protein, drink your water and exercise. All you can do is follow your program until your body decides it's not starving. In the meantime look for NSV and take your measurements to compare the differences.

I need some encouragement
BLERDgirl replied to gmacy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are being too hard on yourself. There is no avg loss. As long as the scale is moving in the right direction you are doing well. Do not juice. Juicing only gives you the sugars from the veg and fruit since the Fiber is in the pulp that gets discarded. An easy veg to start with is chopped spinach. Easy on the tummy, a good source of Iron and Protein. Good to eat whether frozen or fresh. Try adding just a quarter cup with lunch or dinner. If you eat eggs, you can mix it into your eggs as well. Then branch out one veg at a time. Step away from the scale for a bit. Do not let it rule your life and make you crazy. Look for other Non-Scale Victories(NSV) take your measurements, look at how much farther you can walk, run, etc.... -
What a terrific NSV for you!
