I had wine after three months on a cruise - no issue. Keep in mind alcohol consumption will stop weight loss in its tracks. It also didnt take a whole lot to get loopy. A reasonable doctor will tell you that you will need to live your life. Its not reasonable to assume you will never drink alchohol, eat something fried, eat cake, eat something bad for the rest of your life. If you are reasonable about it you can do those things once in a while.

2nd Day Post-Op
kajameetsworld22 replied to ladycharizar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel much better but I am struggling with this liquid diet. I went around looking for sugar free candies to Break it up... they were not lying when they said sugar alcohols will give you so much gas and diarrhea. I'm not hungry but I'm so tired of drinking fake sugar. I'd much rather just stick to natural sugars in food. At one point in my life I did work out and lost a lot of weight and I was hooked on sugar free stuff. Now it just makes me nauseous . [emoji24] I can't wait until Monday's . How are you feeling now? How's your weight loss going? -
Protein Based Dessert and Snack Options
Berry78 replied to MochaKelly's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, no.. I just thought it was clever, actually. Do be careful eating a bunch at once in case the sugar alcohols don't agree with you (but, I see you already did go easy, so all will be well, I'm sure ). -
I had my RNY with a gall bladder removal on Aug 4th. FWIW, here are some of the things I found most helpful. And yes, everyone is different, but I found it useful when others on this list shared their experiences, so here are some things that made the process a little easier for me: 1. In packing my overnight bag I only brought a change of underwear for the next day. I wore a caftan thingy both to and from the hospital so it felt like moving in and out of a nightgown. Ladies, I just skipped the bra at that point. 2. Also in the bag, I brought a pack of pre-moistened wipes. I am allergic to alcohol so I didn't want to rely on regular hospitals wipes and I was so happy to have my familiar, cooling, cucumber scented wipes to freshen up afterwards and to use on my forehead to soothe. 3. I was glad I thought to ask the nurse for an extra pillow to hold on my stomach. Getting up and down, it helped to put pressure on my incisions and muscles and have them strain less. 4. Music and headphones were essential and over-the-head ones, as opposed to earbuds, were much easier for me to keep track of with all the getting up and down nurses moving me around. 5. Best move I made all day was in the pre-op, after I was all set up, and had been given some pills that were making me dopey. My SIL who had been with me up to that point was still there and trying to keep me calm and distracted, and I just asked her to leave so I could have time alone for prayer (and silence!) All in all, things went smoothly for me, though the anesthesia really kicked my butt and it took me a long time to be able to get up and around. My first walk was at 4am when the took me to get weighed. It seemed kind of cruel at that point. Finally, my spiritual practice includes "mindfulness" and I'm using this opportunity of relearning what it feels like to eat to really focus on the whole experience. It doesn't make my protein drinks taste better, but it changes my intention toward them when I say I blessing of thanks for the opportunity to nourish and heal my body.

I'm 9 months postop and recently had 2 episodes of what I think may be gas pain ... the discomfort is in the suprapubic area and is absolutely f&@#% bananas. I was literally rolling on the floor. It went away after 30-40 min ... I even pooped and passed gas during the episode without relief of the cramping feeling. What did I eat? Both times I had drank a gose beer (fancy type of sour beer with low alcohol content) and eaten a KIND bar. I won't be consuming that combination again. Anyone else almost go to the ER with his maddening type of pain? It is so odd, because the pain is unlike anything prior to surgery -- given that things were moved around in there. Any body with a quick fix to share is appreciated.

I'm preop but my dietician told me no carbonated drinks ever (so sad about that) and that if I did drink that 1 would be my max because it would hit my blood alcohol so fast
-
6 weeks post op. My glass a wine very Friday night goes down just fine. Cheap buzz off 1/2 glass of wine. Seriously, have a driver if your out in public. Your blood alcohol level will increase quickly.

Temptations..
RedOrangeSunrise replied to Rina5191's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am only a week and a half out (from surgery), but I've been on a liquid diet for three and a half weeks. Before then, I cut out desserts, alcohol, carbonated drinks, and cut down on carbohydrates in general. I also stocked up on protein shakes and soups. My kids are 2 and 5, so I also got some chocolate syrup for them. Here's why: momma's protein shakes look like chocolate milk and they want it too! In the morning, I put my shake in a mug and they assume it's coffee (another thing I had to cut out). I make a lot of kid food that they love, but doesn't appeal too much to me. Burrito with only meat and cheese, spaghetti O's, chicken nuggets, the occasional lunchable. I do make real food, too. Recently, a lasagna. I get a lot of joy out of watching my kids eat, but the liquid diet does suck. Sometimes, my husband will supervise dinner so I don't have to be around it if I'm having a hard day. Cross addiction or addiction transfer??
summerset replied to Yettid's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hummmmm, it's hard to tell... My experience is that I stopped smoking after being banded and haven't started again since. As far as compulsive behavior goes: I spend more money on stuff but nothing I couldn't afford so I don't see this as a big deal. Alcohol I drink once in a while. I feel that I'm more anxious about things. More nervous and restless in general. I guess that is my ADHD kicking in harder. -
Thank you all so much! I'm not looking to start drinking as soon as I have my surgery or anything at all like that. I just wanted to be sure that there would be options later if I so wanted to. This whole surgery is so scary and seems like a finality and there's certain things that I definitely want out of my life but I've never had a problem with over drinking so alcohol is not one of them. I'm glad to hear that if I want it I can have it still in small doses.

I'm considering WLS and doing my research. One of my concerns is addiction transfer. I do know a few wls that have moved their compulsive eating to other addictions. i.e. Gambling, shopping, sex, bulimia, etc. I do have OCD behaviors and am afraid to transfer compulsions. I'm lucky alcohol and drugs don't appeal (or agree) with me. I haven't had a cigarette in 7 years. But looking back, when I've lost a lot of weight in the past, I do see some compulsive patterns. Any experiences or insight ?

Social Drinking?
TooneyNinosMom replied to belluhfit's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Dr. told me not to have any alcohol till at least the 8 weeks are up. I am no longer allowed to have carbonation. He said red wine was my best option. -
I've been eating quest bars since surgery and I actually enjoy them. However, the sugar alcohol in them has me farting so frequently I can't stand to be in the same room as myself. Does anyone have a recommendation for a bar with no sugar alcohol? Thanks.

How soon were you able to drive?
bschmidt25 replied to Naturelover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drove 5 days post op after I had stopped taking the pain meds for over 24 hours. I was overly cautious about it. First time, I drove a very short distance with my wife to make sure I felt OK and that I wasn't driving badly. It's important to note that in many places, DUI laws don't make any differentiation on alcohol or drugs. If something happens and they determine that you were impaired by drugs or alcohol, you can be charged. Not something I wanted to risk. -
Might want to google drinking after bariatric surgery to get some more info on it. My understanding is that it can become an issue for some folks, and can sometimes end up being a substitute addiction. If your weight issues are related to sugar, then alcohol will exacerbate those cravings because that's what it is made of. It's common for alcoholics to end up eating a lot of sugar after getting sober, and vice versa. Also, with our little tiny stomachs, we should prioritize getting nutritional value out of whatever we put in it. Alcohol has none. I quit drinking a few years ago and thought all of my friends would notice, but hardly anyone did, and if they asked, I just said I wasn't drinking due to meds I was taking or because I had some other dietary restriction. The choice is yours of course, but at some point, we all need to face the fact that we can't eat or drink like normal people. If we could, we wouldn't be here. I know sleevers who do imbibe now and then with no issue. That's great for them. Personally, I just don't want the empty calories and I always eat more when I drink, so there's that. I'm sure you will make the choice that is right for you, just make sure you are fully aware of the risks. [emoji4]

After reading posts on here, there are huge differences in what the docs say. Mine said no carbonation ever. No alcohol for a year, better if never again. Full of empty calories, and said that many people become dependent bc of depression from having the surgery.

My doctor told me no more alcohol period. It's going to be hard but you've already gotten this far. I'm not drinking anymore for myself, I've invested so much in this weight loss journey. I'll support and not judge any decision you make. Good luck. Sent from my LG-H901 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi, I'm new to this app, and have a question that I'm kind of nervous about asking. I am currently on the pre-op liquid diet and am going to be sleeved in 11 days! I'm very excited and motivated to start my wls journey. I just recently moved to Southern California because I'm starting school here in the fall. All of my friends are in Northern California and have no idea that I'm having this surgery. I was wondering at what point, post-op, were you able to have a drink? I am by no means an alcoholic, I'm just a 21 year old girl who loves to have nights-out with her friends. Fortunately for me, all of my friends live 6+ hours away so I won't be seeing them as often. But when I do go to visit, it will be expected that we go out and a have a few drinks. It will be obvious if I go out and don't part-take. I am of course able to say no, but I'd rather not go out with them at all if I can't act how I normally would, if that makes sense. Please no judgements [emoji18]

I am in need of recommendations for proper sugar free popsicle brands. You know the ones without the sugar or sugar alcohols? I have a friend shopping for me and it's hard to find the "right" sugar free as directed by my surgeon and nutritionist. Sent from my SM-N910P using BariatricPal mobile app

Interesting. When someone in Germany speaks about the abuse of "C2" they usually mean alcohol. -
Lost enough weight pre-op to cancel?
Callisto replied to Cober1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You and I are almost in the same boat except I have not been approved yet - it was just submitted last week to insurance. I am 4'11" and I am 184 pounds. My weight history is varied and I am 43 years old and really struggled since 27 when i had my last baby (17 years ago lol). I have been on weight watchers too many times to count. I have tried so many diets. During these 17 years I got down to about 137 twice, once right after I had the baby and went on WW and another time when I was going through the divorce diet. Most of the time I have been about 170 but up and down up and down, total yo-yo diet and up to 189. When I was 189 last time they denied me two years ago because the previous year I dropped below my BMI while on prescription weight loss pills. So I thought here I would try it again two years later as I am at 184. My cut off is like 174. The other day I was 179 because of the new blood pressure med I am on is making me pee tons. I am back up, though. I am so close to my BMI that the pre - op diet could screw me up. So number one: I have never been able to keep the weight off myself. Number two: I have never been low enough to make my medical issues decline. Number three: I would like to lose weight and decrease my medications eventually. I can lose 60 pounds and be close to my goal weight of 120. I have type 2 diabetes, no insulin. I am headed that way. I hope to be off metformin with wls. I have osteoarthritis in my back and neuropathy in my feet and hoping that by losing that I can be off the Lyrica I take or at least decrease it! High blood pressure: It was 200/120 the other day - tell me now that I am too close to the cut off even if it is 60 pounds? Right? So with the new BP meds I am on I am closer to a normal BP range, but still I hope with WLS I can decrease my BP enough to be off meds. Sleep apnea: again WLS should help Fatty Liver (non-alcoholic): I am sure it is all the cheese I eat. lol! But he told me five years ago if I don't lose weight that in 10 years I was looking at the beginning of cirrhosis, hows that for scary. I am probably forgetting something but that should be enough. My point is, even if you don't have much to lose, check out your past history and take into account your health and how WLS will be a tool to help you manage your weight loss. My daughter said if I get denied: "Can't you just send a picture of yourself to the insurance company and they can see your body?" HAHA! It is true though, if they saw how I carry my weight in my waist and arms, upper back, they could tell I look like diabetic headed for a stroke. That is my 60 pound story. If I was 100 pounds over weight I would probably be dead. Technically I could weight 100 pounds and still be in my weight range but 120ish is the goal. -
This is mostly out of curiosity. But i know you're much more likely to get drunk quicker with alcohol after bariatric surgery but what about vomiting from alcohol? Do you puke your brains out like a person normally would from excess alcohol consumption? Or does that not happen since you're consuming a much smaller quantity of alcohol. Like I have no idea if you could end up puking excessively from 6 oz of alcohol even with impaired digestion
-
You won't need your vitamins until 2 weeks after surgery. I would suggest not overdoing it anyway - I got a case of protein shakes for my after my surgery and still have 4 in the fridge 6 week later. I'm sure your surgeon has resources- did they give you a packet or info or have you seen a dietician? They are always great help. I'd be sure to get some sugar free popsicles to have on hand. They were my lifesavers. There are all kinds of protein shakes out there even at Walgreens and the gas stations. Just get ones with less than 5 g of sugar and lots of protein. Also avoid sugar alcohol (shows on the label below sugar). They can make you feel yucky! Good luck all! Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 194 GW 135
