    One week to go

Yes, we got this. I haven't cried over the food, but I've got downright angry. I went to a hockey game (crappy food galore). Funny thing is, I don't often eat at them, but that day, I wanted everything. My husband had a hot dog (I'm not even that much a fan, but I wanted one so badly....that hurt) and then an Italian ice with soft serve chocolate ice cream on top (I'm not a fan of ice cream and I've had my share of sf ice pops and Italian ice - not tempting). I notice times of the day I get most hungry (right now, around 3:30 p.m.). It's amazing how we all lost 9 lbs thus far. That's intriguing!! I drink, drink, drink. Tea, broth, shakes, crystal light w/water....all we can do. Well, mine isn't as restrictive, since I am allowed a small meal and approved snacks of SF pudding, certain yogurt, certain veggies....if I have fruit, only a 1/2 cup, which isn't a lot (4 strawberries are about a 1/2 cup). But you're limited in how much of those snacks. I have tried to have mostly liquids though. I want my surgery to be super duper safe. Let's all keep each other posted, since we're all surgery twins
  2. Does anyone else have this restriction during full liquid stage? It says I can have sugar free or plain yogurt with
  3. I had broth and protein drink for 2 weeks. The added soft foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, smoothies, tofu, refried beans that were thinned with broth. The killer for me was not having any veggies for 8 weeks.
  4. I never had a "regular" good meal when I started back onto "real" foods. It was one food at a time. Trying a little of this and a little of that. I struggled with the course texture of veggies for a long time. Liver was the best meat and eggs never have settled well since surgery. I found that I could initially eat some things just fine (like cod) but if I did get sick on something just once, I could never go back to it. That happened with the cod and I still have lots of frozen portions in my freezer. So, no, it took months before I can say I had a regular meal. Beans (especially refried, and thinned with bone broth) were a favorite - very easy to tolerate and tasted good. Cottage cheese was another one that worked well, as well as yogurt. Starchy foods like the tortilla might tend to get "stuck", but if you can eat a little with some beans, that sounds pretty yummy. I did not introduce starches until much later, however - not until I got within 10 pounds of goal weight.

    Eating as a empty nester

Not an empty nester, but I live alone. i cook a lot on weekends and freeze. One thing that has helped is getting a vaccuum sealer. I cook batches of food, freeze them in individual quantities in normal tupperware, then once it is frozen, I transfer the frozen block of food to a vac sealed bag. Lasts forever. I also tend to make 2-3 things at once, then I have about a month of food. Some stuff I make (I'm a pescatarian, so you could always add meat): Chili ricotta bake (I use eggface's recipe and add sauteed spinach) Sauces (curries, tomato sauces, etc) - freeze in ice cube trays and pull out a cube or two to put over tofu, fish, shrimp, etc. I really like the sauce for the fire roasted tilapia from bariatric foodie - I just make the sauce and add to individual fish when I make it Beans ( I don't like canned beans, so I made from dry and freeze) Lentils/dals, etc Some other easy stuff Eggs - I scramble an egg, add salsa and cheese, and eat with a single serve of guac; or make fancy baked eggs. I also like Shakshuka eggs - I make a big batch of the sauce, then freeze and can make a single egg in a small pan. yogurt with frozen fruit (yep - for dinner) Shrimp - easy to thaw just a few and really quick to cook Frozen fish from Costco - they're individually packaged, so easy to take out 1 filet.
  6. I find I keep my protein around 50 grams but up to 60 and every so often a little more. Usually by accident. ive been doing average 340 but it can range 290-440 depending on the day. What I have to eat or plan to eat. I’m struggling with foods and consistencies and textures and swallowing issues. i guess here are some examples: 1. PEScience peanut butter cookie protein powder = 120 calories, 24 grams protein TwoGood vanilla yogurt 5.3 o = 80 calories, 12 grams protein friendship whipped cottage cheese 4 oz = 90 calories, 16 grams protein Total 290 calories, 52 grams protein sometimes I also have good culture cottage cheese 5.3 oz 110 calories, 19 grams protein. I usually have the protein powder with ripple milk (4 ounces is 4 grams protein) but I’ve been mixing it in TwoGood yogurt. 2. Koia cinnamon horchata rtd (plant based) = 190 calories, 18 grams protein two soft boiled eggs = 140 calories, 12 grams protein BariatricPal grapefruit flavor protein juice = 80 calories, 15 grams protein total = 410 calories, 45 grams protein sometimes I have BariatricPal creamy chicken pasta mixed with a packet of beef broth soup for 30 grams of protein and 210 calories I might have a protein shot which is 60 calories, 15 grams protein just a few examples. And My surgery was April 29th. I know I’m not normal. I’m doing the best I can. maybe I’m not a good example. I’m not perfect, I have very little energy to plan out meals. I tend to not have lunch. My fatigue is not related to calories, it’s a chronic illness. The more exertion the more fatigue. I cope however I can. thank you @FluffyChix you Always provide excellent information. I probably should stop commenting since my way isn’t the norm.
  7. The evidence is pretty compelling for adopting a whole food plant based (WFPB) lifestyle. Basically, there are 4 food groups: vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. You can throw in some nuts and seeds as well. Nothing processed, no sugar. I already eat a very clean diet - no processed food, nothing artificial, no sugar, lots of veggies, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes. But I think I am going to try to gradually move away from animal based foods. I have inflammatory issues, and I am hoping this will help reduce those blood markers that continue to be high. I also have seen the evidence for improved athletic performance after making the switch. There is better arterial flow and muscle performance with a plant based diet. So wish me luck. This will not be a sudden change. But I have actually been feeling a bit of upset tummy lately after eating fish, meat and eggs. I used to eat a lot of eggs (from my own backyard hens), but since surgery, they just do not sit well. Cheese and yogurt will be my challenges, I'll have to try some soy yogurt and see if it works for me. I already use pea protein for about half of my protein supplements. I will definitely keep up with my protein requirements and will always be taking my vitamins. Tonight we had a stew of 3 kinds of lentils, white beans, millet, sorghum, sweet potato, and garden snow peas on a bed of spiralized zucchini. Even my carnivore husband got a second helping. Yes, it seems like there are a lot of carbs, but I am at goal now and having a struggle not to lose more weight, so this seems like a good time to try this. Any thoughts?

Am I doing this all wrong?

Are you getting enough protein? Most soups are very low in protein and high carb. The more carbs or hidden sugars, the hungrier you will feel. Getting 50-60 grams of protein a day will keep you full longer. Also the type of protein helps. A blend of whey and casein protein, the casein keeps you full. I use PEScience select protein powder. It works well mixed with yogurt too. if you like soups there is Unjury protein broth. BariatricPal store has a good variety of soups too. There is a sale until the 21st on their brand of products. They even have a broth with vitamins.

    Any September Sleevers?

I'm still just on liquids and will be for 2 weeks. Water, sugar free sports drinks, broth, sugar free jello & sugar free ice pops. Im doing great I dont feel any restrictions when taking in liquids. They told me the goal was 64oz a day but I've far passed that. Phase 2 starts week of the 21st but that is only ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt and some soups but I have to puree them in the blender. It definitely has been a better experience then I had anticipated. God willing it stays this way. To be honest I didnt even feel like I had surgery😊
  10. Wooooow I literally had to gasp after reading that. I'm so sorry to hear all that you have been going through. To be completely honest I cant believe how some on here are eating some type of solid food a week after surgery. Even when I start puree the only thing I'm adding is Cottage cheese, ricotta cheese & Greek yogurt other then that still liquid. I cant even have an egg till 2 weeks of puree. I'm doing so well with my water, tea, broth, jello & ice pops that I couldn't wait to start puree and then I saw your post and freaked out. Lol. I'm sure everything will work itself out God willing please keep me updated on your progress. Stay well🙏🏻

    October Surgery Roll Call

i just had the sleeve October 9th. I was on a liquid diet 5 days before and then clear liquid two days before. This first week home I was on clear liquids again. At post op visit yesterday I have to be on liquids (no pudding, no yogurt no applesauce, no creamed soups, no yogurtetc) for yet another three weeks. Basically its protein shakes, bouillion, water and crystal light and sugar free popsicles. Stage three after will be the first real "food" for me (pureed) November 8.. I am amazed when I read all these patient who are eating soft food after week one and seem to do fine. That will be a total of SIX weeks on liquids...not easy. My Dr. seems to be in the minority on this issue, but I am following it to the letter. Good luck as you continue your journey. You are correct, we are all different how we heal and handle this!
  12. Hi Mikey! My surgery was 8/12, so I'm 10 weeks post-op now. Can you run down exactly what you went through whilst in hospital? I checked in around 6AM, and had to wait 2-3 hours to be brought into the surgery prep. I changed into the gown and spoke with the nurse and anesthesiologist. They put in the IVs, and I was wheeled to the surgery room, where I fell asleep within seconds. I woke up feeling very woozy and in pain. Post-surgery, I spent about 36 hours in the hospital. I was in a lot of pain for the first 12 hours or so, but they give you medication for it. Getting up and walking really helps with the pain, as much as it hurts to get out of bed those first few times. I was discharged in the early afternoon of my second day. How did you feel in the first few days to weeks.. Where you able to drink much Water? I felt very groggy from the pain, pain meds, and dehydration. In the first week, I was getting around 36-48oz of fluids per day, and by week two, I could get int 48oz+. Did you feel hungry much? I felt a little bit hungry for the first week, but not starving (even though you are technically starving). Was the pain bearable? The pain got noticeably better each day, and around 2 weeks, it was almost gone. It's not constant, nagging pain. It's sharp pain at the incision sites when you sit up or twist a certain way. I couldn't sleep on my side for about 10 days, which was very annoying. However, as bad as the pain was at times, at 10-weeks post-op now, I barely remember it, and it was definitely worth it. And in the first weeks or months are you still feeling restrictions on how much you can eat or drink in one go? Definitely, but it depends on the food. It's a lot easier to eat 4-8oz of yogurt or cottage cheese in 30 minutes than it is to eat 2-3oz of meat in 10 minutes. As for drinking, I can take bigger sips now and finish a small iced coffee (12oz/350ml -- not sure if Australia uses metric or imperial) in about 45 minutes. I'm just curious how we're meant to get enough Protein if unable to drink much liquids? The surgeon and dietician understand that in the first 2-4 weeks, you'll struggle to get enough of both. That's why you prioritize liquids over protein at first.

    September 2019 🍂🍁

Hi Everyone! Seems like everyone is doing really good for the most part. I feel a little frustrated that the weight came off SO FAST in the beginning but is starting to come off a lot slower - but slow and steady wins the race I guess! I'm having a hard time with fluid intake. It's more uncomfortable drinking stuff than it is eating..I find that ground beef goes down the best so I've been doing lots of ground beef and hamburger patties and just chewing chewing chewing! Also eating lots of greek yogurt these days and cheese. I love coming in here and reading everyone's progress. Keep it up everyone, we got this!

    October Surgery Roll Call

I'm one week post op tomorrow and today is the best I have felt. I'm able to get all my protein in usually around 80-90grams. I just started trying to do a couple small snacks, yogurt and homemade sugar free pudding. I have no interest in food whatsoever so I'm basically eating because I know I have to. I'm down a couple pounds. I was hoping for more but I will take any loss I can get.

    Tooth decay

Each persons teeth are different but some tips are to make sure that your calcium is actually being utilized, chewable or liquid vitamins that are Whole Foods based are best. Also vitamin k helps the body utilize calcium in the body better. I just bought my mom a sublingual vitamin k on amazon, so it works best. I use toothpaste with enamel care (I like arm & hammer) I also buy a mouthwash with enamel care i buy the store brand of listerine with enamel care either target or bed bath & beyond Of course eating Greek yogurt is good too since you get calcium, protein and probiotics but don’t forget your probiotic fiber (like chicory root, or tapioca fiber, flax is also very good but psyllium sucks) vitamin k. They do have combinations of calcium, d3 and vitamin k now too. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VXDXXM0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  16. Good advice Deedee, I just hit 9 weeks and was disappointed with the scale yesterday (I only weigh on Wednesday) it was dead even with last week, not even an ounce down. I have been active with walking, dance, yoga and zumba so didn't expect to not lose. I started to eat real food this past weekend (until then was on stage 4) however I was away all weekend and eating out. Hence I didn't have my food scale and measuring cups at each meal. I did in fact make sure I packed my yogurt, protien shakes, cottage cheese and homemade egg salad. I guess I need to step up my steps. I thought my choices and portions were within range but I guess I thought wrong. Hoping to see a downward movement next week

    november sleeve

I start my pre op diet on 10/25. I've done my grocery shopping and I only have one more appointment with cardiology today for a stress test and then I'm finally done with all these appointments! I'm getting more nervous as I get closer. I'm looking forward to a new life and i pray for success. My diet will last 7 days with protein shakes and they actually modified that to also include one Greek yogurt. I can also supplement with a cup of broth, sugar free jello and pops. Its gonna be tough not grazing my kids leftovers but I'm doing this to be there for them and be a healthier me! Loving the support here! Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    October 2018 Sleevers

I'll be hitting the year mark on the 29th. I FINALLY started feeling a bit better about a month ago. I can finally eat more than yogurt without pain/getting sick. So, SO thankful. My first few months, I was creating such good habits - cooking every night, eating healthy stuff. When I started feeling like death in February, all that went out the window because all I could eat was soft foods like yogurt, cheese, or milk. So, here I am, nearly a year out, and I have to start over trying to create the healthy habits. And for some reason it seems harder now than right after surgery, but I'll do it. Now that I can eat, my loss has slowed. I'm up and down a lot, still about 1-2# down in a month. I'm down 135 total, 114 since surgery. Lost 90% EWL and am down to a 26.7 BMI. I'm now a 12/14 (depending on the brand), down from a 24/26. But I still look super flabby. We'll see how it all shakes out now that I can actually eat.
  20. Girl yes this is hard. I'm surprised you're able to eat meat. The majority of us are on full liquids. So in my little carnal mind, I'm trying to understand why you're hungry? I would think just one yogurt, but I can't have that so idk. I would definitely give a call to find out. Best wishes.

    Help Avoid Night Time Eating

Your surgery date is 3/6/19, Right? Check with your dietitian on calorie zone at 7 months out. I may be wrong but 600 seems low. (I was around 900/1000 at six months) Trust your professionals. A few things to try Ask your dietican for calorie and carb ratios. It may help with hunger. a small protein snack before bed. (I do cottage cheese or a dannon lite n fit yogurt) I keep my protein night snack in my calories/macros for the day. I keep a veggie tray on hand. If I have maxed out my calories and I’m still hungry, I eat as much raw veggies I want until full. If I try to bargain with myself for other options its head hunger. Update us. I’m curious to know where your calories should be, I hope you find what works for you.
  22. I'm on day 2 of my pre-op diet and, I'm hangry. I'm at work , which helps a little, but it's still rough. I restricted my calories for months before, dropped weight and so, I didn't think it would be this tough. Maybe it's in my head. Maybe it's also because there is food with all of the birthdays at work. I usually have lunch with people and I don't feel like it today (but I will go with them and sit at the work deli downstairs). I thought I was mentally prepared, and I am, but it is hard. My stomach growls. They told me 2 shakes, a sensible meal (3-4 oz of meat, 1 cup non-starchy veg and 1/2 good carbs, i.e. quinoa). They said snacks, like SF jello, pudding, oikos trip. zero yogurt, but didn't say how many you can have. I don't want to mess up. I don't have my nut's phone # with me to ask today. Sorry, just venting. This is some hard core mental prep, for sure.

    I feel discouraged.

Here are 3 days of food around that time. I picked out existing food to estimate a dish close to what I had, when the actual meal wasn't available online. We have a local BBQ joint who only uses garlic/salt/pepper on their meat. And their smoked turkey is so moist and tender, it was easy to get down in the early days. Also, they had slow cooked homemade green beans which were easy to digest, so I ate that at a lot of meals. I concentrated on super high protein lean calorie proteins: lean white fist (pangasius/basa, tuna, cod, tilapia, haddock) turkey breast and ground extra lean turkey grilled chicken breast ground chicken breast ground beef extra lean pork loin 2% cottage cheese fat free Greek yogurt fat free FairLife Milk unsweetened cashew milk carton egg whites 2% Deli Deluxe Cheese 2% grated cheese Part Skim Mozzarella Cheese Light Cheese Sticks PB2 - defatted peanut butter powder Isopure unflavored protein powder to boost protein in anything Premier Protein drinks mixed in decaff coffee and decaff tea March 8, 2018 March 12, 2018 March 14, 2018

    Food Before and After Photos

More chaffle nonsense. @Orchids&Dragons this is the closest I could get to my craving today without going to the store for lox. L/O grilled salmon on Greek Yogurt "cream cheese". So dang good. Nothing left but the plate, a lemon rind, and a seed. LOL. Here's the breakout: cals; protein; fat; carbs; fiber; sugar Can you believe this is only 163 calories for this lunch. I'm waiting to feel deprivation eating so "abstemiously". When am I gonna feel deprivation?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I worry that the long term effect of low calorie intake is malnutrition. We have to be sure every bite is as nutritionally dense as possible and that we are faithful with our vitamins. I know I have some malabsorption going on, especially with fats, and I am already osteopenic. I agree that I could happily consume under 1,000 cal/day and feel satisfied. Like you, I could actually lose 15-20 more pounds and still be the normal range, but I would look terrible, and honestly, I am building my size 10 wardrobe and don't want to get to a smaller size - too expensive!!! I am getting back to my 16/8 or 14/!0 window and adding in 1 day of 24 fasting per week. But I want to continue exercising to do some more triathlons and backpacking trips. So it will be an adventure to see how to do that with the IF. I do not want to give it up again like I did last month to train. That was not a happy place. I felt sluggish and more hungry, and just wanted to eat all the time. I think slipping in an extra protein shake, an extra yogurt power bowl, and/or a bowl of protein soup is the way to go. They go down easily without leaving me uncomfortable. It is definitely a journey and I'm glad there are others like you who are on it with me! It's so good to get ideas and feedback. I cannot imagine going this alone.
