    Newbie, from Edmundston,NB

Not me, but welcome from the West Coast! (Vancouver, BC).
  2. I've been on two medication (PPI) for 19 years. I developed my HH while pregnant with my first child. And I get an upper and lower GI done once a year due to the damage from my HH. Each time I have polyps that need to be tested, etc. The surgery to have my HH was suggested and when I told my PCP, he's the one who suggested having WLS at the same time. But bc the stomach is reduced with the sleeve the acid is pushed back up more often... so for me I'm not really sure how it will all work out... I can't imagine the reflux pain being worse but I was really hoping to fix that all together.... since my objective is to heal my esophagus and get off the medications bc they are not good long term either. So to answer your concern, my doc says I will remain on my medication after surgery and take me off one at a time, see how I do and then take me off the other. Fingers crossed... I'll be off them for good! 😉

    Anyone from British Columbia, Canada?

I'm from BC I was told I could be waiting game 3-5 years for gastric bypass. Thinking of going to Mexico.
  4. My surgery is also October 18. Surgery wgt is 234, cw 177. I workout a lot though sometimes I run 10 miles in a day bc I just have that energy and I really enjoy running
  5. My surgery is Monday I was really worried but now after doing a lot of reading if it really was a big safety thing then I think all docs would have the same protocol but bc it Varys so much and so drastically I'm not to worried about it anymore I've had 2 other emergency abdominal surgeries I had my gallbladder removed and my appendix so I'm just not as worried anymore

    Getting Scared

The head game is really something I'm still trying to get my head around, if that makes sense. I guess it's kinda like "if you wait to have kids until you have enough money, you'll never have kids". I'm pretty miserable at 440 lbs. I always say "I came out at 10lbs 1oz and I've never looked back!". I was born a big baby Was the biggest throughout all of school Shopped in the "husky" department all of my youth Can only shop in the "Big & Tall" stores Dealt with all of the BS of being ridiculed for the size I was/am Constantly think "will that chair hold me?" Constantly reject going to events at places I can't check out first, like a theater, concert hall, sports venue...because what if I won't fit in the seat or I'll bulge over into the next guy's seat? Can't play catch with my kids anymore - my 14 y/o is a sport nut and would likely be some better if dad would do stuff with him but I can't stand that long Don't travel much because I despise having to buy a second seat on a wide-body plain for my wide-body rear end Deal daily with sciatica pain (since Aug of 2016 - it varies from day to day but it's still there to a certain degree -- biggest fear is that I'll need surgery to fix the problem but will be told I'm too fat to have the surgery! I've definitely got some food issues to work through and I'm still not sure what's behind them. I'm ready for a change, but the "devil on my shoulder" keeps yelling in my ear!
  7. Pay the $400 for an inspection. You don't want to miss something bc you wanted to skimp out on it. And, it will be leverage for your ultimate price in the end.
  8. I would be interested as long as it isn't too far and the time works. Weekends are better for me bc I have two small children.
  9. I am six months post op and am very happy to have lost 70 lbs, however, I am not able to eat most foods that I should be eating at this time. I should be eating lean meats and veggies but can't. I understand that my portions are going to be tiny but I continue to try to eat meats and it usually comes back up after two small bites. I got my gal bladder removed after getting x-rays, ultra sounds and an endoscopy which all showed everything was fine. They only found a few gal stones. Still nothing has changed. I went back to my doc today and he said I should be careful what I wished for bc I have had such great weight loss and that is why I got the surgery. He said it takes some people up to a year to start tolerating meats and veggies. I am so frustrated bc I am so hungry but the only thing I can safely eat and not puke is pop corn. Help!! Has anyone else gone through this? Does it get better?

    Montefiore metroplus insured

Hopefully I can get a surgery date in the coming week. I will finish my cpap compliance on friday. They literally told me to use it for a week to generate a report at the last minute. I have Dr. Moran. It prob took you a longer time to get an appt bc your doc is the most popular lol
  11. I'm from BC and waited and recently had surgery in province paid for my provincial healthcare after a long wait. There have been recent news reports of people returning here with complications. Life is full of risk, to each their own.

    British Columbia Sleevers

Hi Onmyway - I am from up north in BC and am wondering how you are doing? How did your surgery go?
  13. Called fep blue and they FINALLY told me my surgery was approved. They received the paperwork from my surgeons office on Feb 22, so took them 1 week and 5 days. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. I LOVE the keto diet I'm on bc the weight is melting off the fastest it has been since surgery on 12/5. This past week I lost 12lbs! I'm at 73 1/2lbs down total and I'm never hungry. It's amazing! The only annoying thing is the constant thirst and dry mouth. Plus side is my water intake has increased from an already very high intake. Down side, dry mouth and peeing all day. Does anyone else following this way of eating experience these side effects from being in Ketosis?

BCBS 6 mos diet requirement & comorbidity questions

Guess I'll be starting from scratch. :/ BC/BS of AL requires 7 months. I'm not going to be using my PCP or Endo if I have any say about it. I suppose I'll ask for a bariatric nutritionist from the get-go. Going to be a looooooooooooonnnng 7 months.
  16. I don't judge nor fault you for not wanting to wait. I started the process in December of 2015, I met the BMI requirement, but I didn't have any co-morbidities aside from possible undiagnosed sleep apnea (my bf would tell me about certain things that led me and my PCP to believe this). So they referred me to a sleep center to do the test. It took two months for the referral and appointment to get situated. It was scheduled for February. Then something came up that caused them to have to re-schedule, and it was another month out. Right before a trip I had had planned for months prior. I got fed up with it and just cancelled and started looking into Mexico. I went with Dr. Illan, and I have absolutely no regrets about doing so. His team is fantastic, he's so nice and caring. I also just loved that he was partnered with BP themselves, and Alex being a long standing person in the Bariatric community backing him as well just spoke volumes in my eyes. So I said to hell with proving the sleep apnea. Because even after that, then I had to do the 6 month weigh ins, psych eval, etc. etc. My weight gain was a culmination of my PCOS, bad eating habits, and severe depression from the PCOS. I could lose 30-40lbs, but I couldn't keep it off or get under that. I got fed up and booked with Dr. Illan the moment I got back from my trip. Now I'm 9 months post-op, 48lbs away from goal, and life is fantastic. Some don't have the means to take the self-pay option, and technically I didn't either (I took out money against my car, and my bf of 9 years took money from stocks he had and paid a portion of it too). But I'll say, it was the best $4400 I ever spent, and I wish I had done it sooner. To think that if I hadn't I would just NOW be getting my surgery? The thought makes me cringe and so happy that my impatience did me a favor for once. I did get lucky, my PCP had 2 other patients who'd gone to Mexico to get the VSG and had done great, and so that even eased my mind. She wasn't a stranger to it, and that was even better. She's been very supportive. If yours won't get on board, I'd definitely think about changing to a new one.

    Not losing much

What if you change fruits for vegetables?? I'm not allowed to eat fruits and it worked for me. I'm 3 months out and I lost 45lbs. 65lbs more to go. Ask your surgeon about cutting fruits (they have sugar) and replace them for non-starchy vegetables. Also remember, everybody is different and some people have what is called "week stall" where you don't lose anything for a week or two bc the body needs to adjust. Good lick

    Almost died

This is too weird. Nobody even remotely should think of eating broccoli and cheese soup at 3 days postop. Seems fake, like this person is just trying to get attention. I've seen this kind of thing on a Facebook group I used to follow and the moderators would need to come in and stop comments (bc everyone would comment, either trying to help or bewilderment).

    Food Aversions

I don't like any meat anymore. Reheated meat is an absolute no-no. I like fish, but pretty much all meat makes me nauseous. I love tofu and tolerate it very well. Refried Beans with melted cheese are another favorite. I am almost 3 months postop and pretty sure I'm gonna need Protein shakes forever. I sometimes have whole wheat saltines with nut butter (I like sunflower butter actually bc I'm allergic to peanuts). I make chili a lot and freeze it in small containers. One thing that actually makes my pouch happy is vinegar cole slaw. I don't know why, but it just does. If only that had protein.

    Need advice: Protein drinks

Thank you everyone! I got some isopure and plain grass fed whey to mix into my meals. So far so good. Now if I can figure out how to stop the acid reflux we'll be set. This is all so weird and new to me. My nutritionist appointments were so vague and no body really filled me in on what to buy.

    Is This Thing Working?

  22. Hello Guys, Surgery date March. 13th fed looking for a mentor. Connect with me Transformation
  23. I'm from BC, I just had my lapband surgery privately done in Ontario as False Creek in Vancouver was not able too. In Richmond, BC the wait list was so long and they didn't do the lapband there. Are you having you surgery done at Richmond Metabolic and Bariactic Surgery Centre?
  24. I have BC/BS of AL as well and am just starting this journey. My very first appt is in March with a surgeon, my very first step, but... my PCP sucks, and the last one sucks even worse (they're ratings online are spot-on). I'm a little outside of Montgomery and use Montgomery docs, but it's SO hard to find a PCP who isn't indifferent and with a crummy and often incompetent staff (I don't say that lightly either). I'm scared because I have to either stick with the doctor I have, who is one of those who speaks with you for a couple of minutes with his hand on the doorknob, office staff that won't answer the phone half the time (No menu or option to leave a message) and doesn't even let you know he's left the exam room for good until a nurse comes in to usher you out to pay. I'm trying to be pro-active and get letters that I need before my surgeon appointment next month, but it's like pulling teeth. I called to see if I could get a letter from my previous doctor, because he's who I saw at the beginning of 3 years ago... and was transferred to a nurse who interrupted me mid-sentence and left me on hold for 10 minutes before coming back and telling me someone will have to call me back from "New patients" in order to make an appointment. Thing is, I told the nurse I just wanted to see if I could get the doctor to write a letter and/or suggest the appropriate medical records to show my weight and BMI dating back when I first saw him in Jan 2013. She didn't listen and told me my account is inactive because I haven't been his patient since Sept 2016, then sent me to records. I don't want to go back there, it's horrible, but my current doctor isn't much better. I also feel that NOW isn't the best time to find a NEW doctor as they'll have to do records requests etc. I honestly don't know what to do. Already this stress and it's just the beginning of this journey. :/ Sorry my first post is nothing but a rant, but this is completely frustrating for me to already have a mess just trying to get a letter and records to show my weight and BMI. No one has called me back yet either and not sure when or if they will. Such is the nature of the beast with these two offices. Thanks for reading. Again, sorry for the rant.
