  1. Hi Folks, A brief synopsis of my situation. I was banded in 2007 at 210 pounds (self pay) The band was always problematic for me and I lost a great deal of weight because of the huge amount of discomfort I suffered. My goal weight was 120 pounds and I reached it and actually dipped below that to 115 because my band was too tight. Fills were difficult and expensive to schedule so I suffered. In June of this year (2012) I went to the hospital for a fill because the previous fills seemed to have no effect. It was discovered that the band was cracked at the juncture point and had partially opened and slipped down over the bottom portion of my stomach. Emergency surgery was performed and it was removed June 1, 2012. I cried and cried because even though the band was extremely uncomfortable for me for most of the 4.5 years that it was in, it was still my best friend and had allowed me a quality of life never before enjoyed due to my weight loss. My doctor told me that I needed some time to recover due to extensive scarring before they could perform a revision. I told my doctor that I did not want to regain the weight again before I could have the surgery. He assured me that this would not be the case. The records say that a revsion would be considered after a 4 kilo weight gain. Needless to say since I started back on a regular diet of solid foods I have gained 6 kilos (about a pound a week.) I am daily fighting the impulse to eat everything in sight and feel that with help and hope on the horizon that I can stave off weight gain but am also terrified that they will penalize me and say that they will not perform the surgery because I have my weight "under control." Has anybody had any issues with revision because they have not gained weight rapidly since having the band removed. I know all this sounds crazy but my emotions are all over the place and I am terrified of returning to my previous level of obesity. The only reason that I am holding on and able to exercise control is because I know that it is for a limited time only (October 9th) but if I am refused based on the fact that I "appear" to have it under control, I know that the hopelessness will crush me and I will return to the comfort of overeating. I would appreciate any and all feedback on this matter.
  2. My surgery was last Wednesday, Dec. 14th. I had a situation with low blood pressure requiring the nurses to push extra IV's the entire time. I knew I would gain some weight, but wasn't prepared to gain 15 lbs. Is this number reasonable? How fast can I lose the weight? I'm getting all my Water in. lymphedema

Has anyone been diagnosed with lymphedema after starting the process, but before surgery? I have swelling in my legs that is not going away with the help of Lasix. My Dr came to the conclusion that it is lymphedema and that I should continue wearing my compression socks, and discontinue the Lasix.... one problem I can't get the socks on (my legs have swelled that much). The Lasix is also a high risk for me to take because of my QT prolongation (heart concern). As a result I am retaining alot of fluid=weight gain. what kind on treatment should i try to help lose the weight now??? I am already eating mostly fruits and veggies, and getting my Protein in. I am on my feet all day at work (I am a CNA in a nursing home on night shift) and I am in school for 7 hrs 2 days a week... and try to sleep somewhere in there. Oh and my job.... they can force me to work double shifts based on facility needs (so, if someone calls in, they could make me stay). With that being said, I don't necessarily have the extra time for workouts.
  4. I'm starting to have a BIG problem. I had my gallbladder taken out about 6 weeks ago and every since then my whole appetite has changed for the worse. Slowly my weight has started to increase, I gained 5 lbs in the past few weeks. I can eat twice the portion of food and I'm hungry 1 hour after my meals and in between my meals. I was never like that before I had my gallbladder taken out. Before I would eat 3 meals a day and not be hungry and it would be losing 2 lbs a week. Now i'm gaining like 1/2 lbs a day. Honestly, lately for the past two weeks, I've been struggle with eatting hungry and not drinking liquids as I was before. I'm just hungry all the time and not thristy. I haven't really been making the right food choice lately either. I did join a gym 2 weeks ago and I go 2-3 times a week. Does anyone know someone who has Lap Band and had their gallbladder taken out? did they go through this side effect like I am. I can't get another fill because my insurance won't pay for them anymore. I'm 11 months out from having my surgery (surgery date 10/23/07) and I've had 5 fills so far. I'm a 8.5 cc out of 10 cc. The restriction is not there anymore.
  5. My doctor changed my meds to get me off insulin, and the glyboride did wonders. My numbers are in the low 100's but it seems I have gained over 5 lbs while on it. He said it is known to do that. He is more concerned with good numbers, then the effects from the band. These are 2 different doctors.

    Starting Over :)

Thanks to all of you for the support! I'd love to be starting over buddies! The circumstances were: I had a slip 5 1/2 months out...from being too tight and getting some Ibuprofen caplets stuck. I vomited about 5 times in a 2 day period and that was enough to slip my band (although they told me it typically takes WEEKS of violent vomiting to slip a band..... that is not so!!! It can happen very easily - I'm the proof!) I then had a revision surgery and I did ok for a while, but around November of last year I started having acid reflux, coughing all night, having to sleep in the recliner, being able to eat too much, weight gain, etc. My Dr. ordered an upper GI and it was discovered that I was (again) too tight. This time, instead of feeling uncomfortable or feeling like vomiting after eating too much, the food was not passing through my band at all and was accumulating in my pouch and in my esophagus, causing my esophagus to stretch out to three times it's normal size. I could not figure out why I was able to eat normal sized portions and why I was gaining weight. I could not tell that the food was not going through. It felt normal the whole time, except for the terrible heartburn anytime I layed down. I kept going in for fills telling them I needed to be tighter (hence, making the problem worse). Also, I was drinking a lot of diet pop, which my Dr. allows (I know some Dr's say don't drink it, but mine always said he didn't think it mattered). The treatment for a distended esophagus is a complete unfill for several months to allow the esophagus to return to normal size. That meant even more weight gain. If I was able to control what I eat, I wouldn't have needed a LAP-BAND®, right?! LOL I went for my first fill yesterday and have already lost 2 pounds!! I just didn't know all these things could happen. I am a Registered Nurse who researched the LAP-BAND® for nearly a year prior to having it done! I considered myself to be the most likely person to succeed, with all the knowlege I thought I had. I see people on here with the exact same problems I have faced. I joined this site right after my initial surgery, but for some reason I never got on here. I think I was scared...I didn't want to hear about complications because I wasn't planning on having any! As I said before, I think a lot of my problems could have been avoided if I had learned from others ahead of time. Let's all keep in touch!
  7. I knew it would happen. I was totally prepared to gain weight from the IV fluids. They weighed me 2 days post surgery and I was up nearly all of the weight that I had lost on the pre-op diet. I weighed this morning, a week post surgery, and I am still up 2-3 lbs. What gives? I can see that I have lost weight. When will it show up on the scale? Grumble. I know patience ... something that I don't have. Mary

    told my parents

My mom is like that. She lost around 30 lbs a few years ago and she's like, "why can't you just eat smaller quantities and maintain a healthy lifestyle and exercise every day and make sure you you don't exceed 1500 calories" yadda yadda yadda. Easier said than done. I'm one of the few people on earth who know that she has been vomiting her meals into plastic bags, for years. I think that any diet that's success depends entirely on my willpower is doomed to fail eventually. I'm just not that strong a person. And truth is 95% of diets result in failure and weight gain (try googling a UCLA research about dieting, that's where I got the 95% number from). Sleeve gastrectomy has a 70% success rate, that's more than any diet can offer.
  9. I think I wouldn't worry about it so much. I know we watch the scale like a hawk, or I know I do, but just after the surgery you need to focus more on being healthy. My plan for the mushy food still has me drinking Protein Drinks a couple times a day and the food you can eat is plenty, but really doesn't seem like weight gaining foods to me.

    6 Month Diet

No, my insurance didn't cover the shakes. I have to fighting my primary physician once a month for 6 months. We talk about diet, exercise, what my measurements are, weight gain/loss. I have a BMI of 41 so I worry about losing any weight and then being denied.. but the new surgeons office I went to said that it wouldn't matter if I lost weight now because the insurance would go off my first weigh in with them. ?? They would like to see a 20lb weight loss prior to surgery. Anyone experience this?

    Talk about bad luck!

I'm sorry to hear about this too. If you were hooked up to an IV, then the weight gain could simply be fluids. It takes a good few days to pee them all out it seems. Best of luck to you.

    Slightly off the rails

I also was pretty irresponsible NYE and had some (ok alot) of doritos and half a shot glass of coffee patron to say goodbye to 2015. I'm still paying for it!!! Not only did I have a weight gain of 6lbs. YES!!!! 6lbs, but I haven't come out the bathroom since then! I've been back on the magic carpet ride (my term for this journey) since but my body is still not very happy

    Somebody Stop Me!

Hello all, I posted this tread in the pre-op forum but didn't get a lot of response, i.e. as far as from those who had to follow the 6-month supervised diet and if they gained and IF they still approved them. Just wondered if any of you had any experience with this... if you don't mind taking a look!! http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f84/weight-gain-6-morbid-obesity-supervised-diet-56652/ I appreciate your input!
  14. Soooo Thanksgiving was rough for me .... I honestly felt sad because I couldn't eat. I was happy that I couldn't buuut I just missed the food. I didn't measure my food I just put a little bit of this/that on my plate and couldn't eat 1/2 of it ... heck I couldn't even eat a fourth of it. I did enjoy my friends but ... couldn't help mourning my old friend ... food. I know I had too many carbs because I didn't start with Proteins. I was kind of scared to weigh myself because I felt that i'd gained. Today I weighed myself and my suspicions were confirmed. I'm not gonna trip out about the gain ... just making note of it and the cause and moving forward.
  15. So I know this is probably on the forum and for the life of me I can't find any posts to fit what I'm asking, so I'm putting this out there. I may be just spoiled from consistently losing every week (except for a short lived plateau around Christmas time) and I'm really happy with my progress, but today I stepped on for my weekly weigh in and had gained a little over a pound. I track on MFP every little morsel and have been walking 5-6 days a weeks around 2/4 miles a day and my calories ranged from 700-1200 over this week and my protein and carbs were on target (this is all I'm supposed to watch per my NUT), so not sure what is going on. I should probably just not worry about it and see what happens next week. But any thoughts? LBT is very supportive and I may just need this, as I know this is not much of a weight gain, but as I'm sure some of you can understand, weight gain (no matter how much/little it is) is hard to accept when you are doing everything right and want to get away from obesity.
  16. Each day there are more and more newly banded people here who are questioning their weight loss. You think you should have lost more or be losing more then you have. A loss is a loss whether it be pounds or inches. You are not going to lose weight every day, every week or even every month in some cases. No one that is obese ever gained 100lbs over night or some even over a year. It was a gradual weight gain that will take time to get rid of. You're questioning what am I doing wrong. If you are following the plan that your doctor put in place for you to the T then you are doing nothing wrong. As the body loses weight it has to catch up if you initially lose a lot in the beginning. People have went months with no weight loss but as long as you are not gaining you will get there. 1 to 2lbs a week is normal for a lapband patient. If it's more then you're that much more ahead of the game. Be patient, stay off the scale. Weigh yourself once a week or every other so you won't suffer disappointment and question if you made the right decision. If you can't stop weighing yourself then you have to stop being disappointed every time you don't lose. Just hang in there it will happen if you are doing exactly what you are suppose to be doing. You can't eat ice cream, cake, Cookies, potato chips and all the other junk food and wonder why the scale is not moving. Drink your Water, eat your portion size and make sure most of that is Protein, make sure you get 8 hours of sleep at night because you lose weight when you are sleeping, make sure you are moving your bowels every day and stop stressing. You will get there.
  17. It shouldn't affect your fill, but it might effect your weight loss. SSRIs are know to cause a bit of weight gain, so just be prepared. Maybe it won't affect you as much, since you're following such a low calorie plan. But it is a possibility

    Nervous

You can't have a net gain, so that would mean you can weigh more than you did in your initial weigh in after the three months are done. If you started in November, then by February you need to be the same or less weight. (I'm guessing based on what you wrote) How has your eating been? Are you keeping carbs low, not drinking calories?? I never bought into the period weight gain thing. Sure my weight fluctuates, but I've never seen that fluctuation around my period.

    Sweet Spot??

I think it's just another word for 'being able to eat small meals and feeling satisfied'. There's people out there that are constantly trying to find that magical spot where they can eat whatever consistancy of food they want, and have their hunger supressed. - It doesn't work that way. and there's always going to be foods you can't have. When you find the right amount of fill that works for you, you'll be able to comfortably eat small portions of food and be satisfied. If you're too tight, it can lead to weight gain. In the end you just need to find what's right for you. Everyone's going to be different and some people's restrictions are going to be greater than others.
  20. Hi guys and gals, just thought I would post a nice happy thread to let everyone know I finally love my band! lol I was banded on 1st March 08 and have been having a few hiccups along the way..mostly with no restriction, weight gain and feeling generally like I was a failure.But......after my 3rd fill on 11th June 08,I have been having better results and feeling much more positive. I was at a low point thinking that I want going to have any success with my band, and my weight kept going up. I am finding things much more easy now.I can eat a fair amount still,I dont feel too deprived.I am much more satisfied for longer and dont think about food 24/7 like I used to! To anyone who is feeling like the band isnt helping-hang in there! It will happen!! I was helped by all the words of encouragement on here, and it takes the right adjustment and it will work!I love my band now. Good luck to everyone on their banding journey. x x
  21. I'm only 9 wks out but ill try to help. Yes, I think these dietary restrictions 'would' help anyone lose weight. The difference is how long can you follow these restrictions with a whole stomach and plenty of gherlin to boot? Me personally, I've done it ALL. Any diet u can name, I've done it. Low fat, low carb, pills, shakes, supplements, the list goes on. And yes, I lost. But never maintained, because eventually I got HUNGRY, and there was nothing stopping me from eating whatever I wanted to fill up. It was a viscous cycle of diets, hunger, guilt, weight gain, diet again. I'm 52 pounds down now in 9 wks. Not hungry. For once in my life im Eating to live and no longer living to eat.
  22. Hi everyone I made this post in introductions that should be here.I lost almost 20lbs on 2week post-op diet but gained about 6 back after starting soft diet. My first fill is this week 9-17 maybe this will get things going. Thanks Steve
  23. No weight gain...no weight loss. I wish this wasn't my story. Posted by AngieB, Jun 11 2009, 02:34 PM Admin/Owner Options Make This Entry A Draft
  24. I had gained more than a few pounds at my last weigh-in and I was terrified that they were going to delay my surgery because of it, but the CRNP didn't say anything about the weight gain and I surely didn't bring it up lol. Afterwards, someone else told me that as long as you didn't gain over your original starting weight, it wouldn't delay the process, so hopefully it'll be the same for you. I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck!
