    Refried beans?

You could always buy dry beans, then boil and mash them. It's more work but you can be sure they're vegetarian and they'll probably be lower sodium.
  3. I'd love some easy to throw together veg meals ( i do eat most seafood, except lobster) !

    Cheated postop...concerned

It really depends on you. I didn't have a pre-op diet. I was just told to cut back on carbs & fat and increase my Protein. I wanted this surgery to go well so I did just that. As for post-op, it's been pretty easy. My biggest challenge was finding a Protein Drink that worked with my multiple allergies and vegetarianism.

    Protein Versus Fat

Do you have any advice for veggie meat replacements for us? My daughter is a vegetarian and we often use Morningstar, Boca, and Quorn meat replacements. I haven't had any of these myself since surgery (10 wks post op) because I wasn't sure about the amount of carbohydrates in them. My nutritionist said tofu was okay but I have never tried it and although I have heard it is easy to use, I really have no idea what to do with it.

    April 11! Confirmed!

Hello fellow April Sleevers, I'm feeling a bit fustrated. I have been working on consuming more protein via shakes and supplements. My NUT told me she doesn't want me drinking my calories, I'm confused because I was under the impression I would have to be on a liquid diet pre and post op. I was doing so well, getting natural raw nutrients and protein into my diet, now she has thrown me off. I felt great, now I'm confused. I don't like eating meat (I'm not a vegetarian), nor dairy....so, the shake is the best weight for me to obtain protein. Any suggestions? I am trying to lose weight prior to the surgery, so far no luck. :-(

    SEX, SCARS & DATING!!!

Tough one. I am dating a new guy. We have done the naked time thing. He never asked about my scars but is freaked about what I do and don't eat. Jeez, I never make a big production out of eatting but other people seem to be so concerned. It reminds me very much of when I was a vegetarian. Didn't eat meat or anything animal for over 15 years. I never talked about it or made a big to do. When someone found out.....man, what a nightmare. THEIR nightmare! I'm not going to be responsible for other peoples dramas. Especially unfounded drama. I have found that it is too complicated to talk about my surgery and I am very laid back and don't like conflict. If I hear one more person say, "Oh, you had weightloss surgery. By pass?" No, not by pass. It's called the lapband. It's a band around............Oh God!!!!! I just can't!! "Yeah, by pass. I have an aunt who blah blah blah..... AAHHHHH!!
  10. I had surgery one week ago and would like to hear from others about their first week. Would you like to share? From you older banders it would also be nice to get a preview of what the next few weeks will be like. My First Week__________________ I was pretty tired on surgery day, but able to resume a half day at the office the day after surgery, and to resume a full work day on day 5. The pain was minimal. Once, I took a dose of the tylenol w/codein, and other times took half doses of children's tylenol. I had no nausea. That terrible, bloated feeling lasted only 2-3 hours after I woke up from surgery. The only sign of having done something wrong was on day 7 when I ate a scrambled egg. I have had no hunger this week, probably only eating 200-500 calories a day, and have lost 16 pounds. However, today (day 8) I ate 2X-3X what I've eaten on any other day (1/3 Protein drink for Breakfast, cup of Soup for lunch, and 2/3 cup of soup for dinner) so maybe hunger is returning. I was worried that after banding I would forever lose the enjoyment of food. But I'm finding that enjoyment of food is probably a relative thing. Vegetarian broth was delicious, and when I ate that egg (cold, left over by my daughter) it tasted like foi gras (I love foi gras). I understand that if I am restricted now it is only because of swelling and won't last, but I really like this feeling.

    Darn this nose!

I am sure that is frustrating but luckily it shouldn't last forever..... A few years ago I decided quite quickly that I was going to become a vegetarian, mid summer aka BBQ season. It was absolute torture every time my neighbor would BBQ I would sit and longingly stare out the window at his dogs as they ate the left over rib bones (exaggeration, but you get my point) It was very important to me not to eat meat so I didn't cheat, not once. The first couple months were rough, but then something amazing happened..... It didn't matter anymore, the smell didn't bother me, I didn't start drooling, and what was even more amazing, was around 6 months later I had a cheeseburger for the first time and something I used to love.... tasted like cardboard, wet, greasy, cardboard.

Im scared of gaining weight through this crisis

I don’t know what to say exactly. Whatever your fears regarding Covid-19 it shouldn’t alter your healthy way of eating post gastric bypass. There are plenty of options that do not need to be “fresh foods” to keep on hand that are bariatric friendly, low carb and low sugar for meals. I managed to get eggs, yogurt, I have protein powder, protein bars, a few protein soups, I also have frozen foods I tend to buy vegetarian frozen foods. But depending on your stage there are options. Unopened cottage cheese and yogurt stays fresh longer check dates. You can buy canned proteins like tuna, chicken, etc. frozen vegetables. No reason to just stock up on carbs. Also try to find things to distract from worries besides food. If you are safe at home just try not to worry. @AJ Tylo is right there is nothing we can do to change the course of this. I’ve immunodeficiency and lifelong chronic illness and I can’t stress over this. I’m just doing my best to stay on track with what I can. even though I’m dealing with my own personal issues despite everything going on out there. Even though it’s hard as life gets thrown into a strange situation that’s new to you just try to take it one moment at a time and be grateful you are healthy and alive. I can’t play psychic as people seem to like to and say it’s gonna get better, just take it in the moment. And find things to occupy your mind. Get on track with getting hydration, and protein and don’t fall for carbs or comfort foods just because you think it will make you feel better. There are many other things you can do to find comfort and solace and distract your mind to feel better even if it’s just binge watching a really good tv show or taking a long walk alone in nature ... you don’t need a gym for that or to be around other humans either. side note if you can’t exercise compensate in other ways. I can’t exercise due to my chronic illness and disability. I follow a low carb way of eating, and calorie counting. But honestly even now you can find ways to get in some exercise, at home, alone in nature, etc. get creative ...
  13. I am a horrible cook! I can barely cook things.. Please share vegetarian or chicken recipes so I can get my self sumthing nice to eat!
  14. I am almost 6 weeks out from my surgery. I had a birthday yesterday and had a wonderful time. I did not miss the birthday cake at all! On Friday, my mom had a dinner and she asked if there was anything special that I would like, like she always does. I sent her a recipe for a low-fat eggplant ricotta bake, and it was delicious! In fact, many family members who could have had much carbier/less healthful dishes also on the menu, opted to have my special dish as well. After dinner, we played a rousing game of Catchphrase--way better than fattening dessert! My mom also gave me an ice cream maker. I made my version of Eggface's chocolate Peanut Butter Protein "ice cream" today and it was sooo good. The ingredients were soy milk, chocolate Protein powder, white chocolate SF syrup, and powdered/defatted peanut butter (JustGreatStuff--an organic version of PB2). It was just as good, if not better, than traditional ice cream, and nutritionally, it was the same as a Protein shake (I ate 3.5 ounces as a meal and have another serving left over). I felt like I was eating a giant Reese's cup--but with 15 g of protein and about 125 calories. Today my husband got carryout Mexican food and I enjoyed some delicious refried Beans with fresh salsa, cheese and Greek yogurt (I am a vegetarian--they were lard-free). I have enough refried beans left over to get me thru several more meals. My husband usually works weekends but took yesterday and today off and we had a great time just spending time together. He bought me a huge bouquet of my favorite flowers, daffodils. Yesterday, we got a lot of shopping and a lot of walking in. Tomorrow I'm going to officially start back with my Water aerobics classes (I had to wait 6 weeks to restart any type of formal exercise class, though I have been walking). I truly did not miss anything this year--not even a fancy dinner out or birthday cake. I feel lucky to have had VSG and I really enjoyed my time with loved ones this weekend. Here's to new traditions and a new, healthier way of life! Note: here is a photo of the ice cream. It looks like a huge portion but it's 3.5 ounces in a teeny tiny dessert dish that I bought at an auction many years ago. I always wished I had a use for it and now I do!
  15. I am doing a lot of canned 98% ff chicken blended with salsa, tuna with ff ranch dressing, ff cottage cheese with natural apple sauce mixed in, vegetarian baked beans blended with ff cheese and still lots of soups.
  16. First day of solids for me. I haven't had a fill yet. Is it normal to have it feel a little weird when you first eat solids? What I mean is, I do feel more full than with mushies, thank heavens, because I was getting hungry, but it almost feels like food is stuck in there, like I ate a brick and it's laying in the tippy top of my stomach. It was my first dinner of solid food that feels stuck. I had "fake pork ribs" It's vegetarian soy BBQ pork. Or is it normal to have this reaction, some irritation, your first day? <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

First Day of Solids. What is Normal?

I may have eaten too fast. I have only had mashed potato today. Think I'll try some vegetarian sausage tonight and see how it goes. Slowly this time...

Banded on the Dec 16th anyone else?

My surgeon told me I could have anything that would go through a straw, so I'm having chocolate muscle milk Protein shakes. I'm having 3 or four a day plus pureed Soup. (vegetarian) He said that after a few days, if I'm hungry I can switch the next stage of small food. My stomach was growling while I was in the freaking recovery room! I'm glad to hear that someone else is hungry too, because I thought there was something wrong with me!

    High Protein/Low Carb

This is where it is going to get tricky for me. I am not a huge Protein eater. In fact, I was a vegetarian for about 13 years. I am also the type of person that when I try to chew protein about 20-30 times, I want to vomit. It brings back all sorts of bad memories of being a kid and crying at the dinner table because I didn't want to eat. LOL Seriously, I believe that for the most part I am going to be relying on Protein shakes to make sure I get enough protein. I know that my entire eating lifestyle is going to change drastically. I won't really be able to eat a lot of the foods I like. I would think that the Atkins diet (btdt) would work but I'm thinking you will be better off updating it a bit (like South Beach?). JMHO, of course. Very good question. I'm curious to see what others are doing.

    Zucchini recipes?

I know this is a very late addition to this thread however its Zucchini season here in Australia at the moment and since i made this today i thought i would share as it was delicious ! Zucchini Slice by Julie Goodwin Ingredients 2 zucchini, grated 1 large onion finely chopped 3 rashers bacon finely chopped 1 cup tasty cheese grated 1 cup self-raising flour (Self Rising Flour for our US friends) 1/4 cup of oil (Julies recipe has 1/2 cup of oil - can be easily halved) 5 eggs salt/pepper Method Preheat oven to 170°C (338 Fahrenheit). Grease and line a non-stick lamington tin Combine zucchini, onion, bacon, flour and cheese in a large bowl. Add oil and lightly beaten eggs, and mix. Season with a little salt and pepper. Note: the vegetables can be substituted or added to – try corn kernels, grated carrot, shallots, shredded Beans, and leave out the bacon for a vegetarian version.

    Shot down

It's fine to deviate within reason. Because of food allergies and being a vegetarian my eating plan was very different than most. However I reviewed and discussed everything with my nutritionist. I made most things from scratch. What you were doing is still on program. However there are folks who will say things like how they ate noodles ( a slider food) during their all liquid stage. That's just bad advice. There's a difference in being creative and just plain going off course.

    Any ideas?

My skinny sister who exercises regularly has a higher cholesterol than me. She is a vegetarian (so not a red meat issue).

    Any vegetarians/vegan RNYers out there?

I've been a vegetarian for 18 years, and more recently a part-time vegan. My surgery is scheduled for Aug 9. I won't be eating any meat and will rely mostly on dairy and soy for protein. Hopefully once I'm back on solid food I can get rid of most of the dairy and get in more plant protein. But I'm just going to take it day by day.
  24. Thank you both for your responses! I have checked the forum that @catdaddy suggested and I will be joining soon. I sent an email to my nutritionist today and I will call tomorrow to make an appointment so I can get some guidance. @smooshycheeks since you are a seasoned vegetarian, what are your preferred sources of protein? The ones that have the most protein?

    Are Skinny People Treated Better?

I believe so inave seen research that kids would rather have one arm then be fat, but I can't blame them. people r mean to fat people. I'm at my heaviest I have been in about 4 yrs and at 180lbs I'm treated differently. It doesn't matter how healthy I eat or how physically active I am I get the comments all the time like "I don't understand how a vegetarian keeps on weight" or I'm compared to other fat people, or. I had I guy tell me how big my calfs were the other day! People r mean to big girls! May 9 th can't come soon enough!
