Protien Shakes? Which Arr The Best?
RickM replied to kstalvey's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Whatever Protein drink that you find that you like and will drink is the best - the highest protein/lowest carb or fat drink is of little value if you can't choke it down. I've played with the Protein drinks for years (since my wife rejected them after her WLS several years ago). For chocolate shakes I have settled on the EAS powder that can be bought at Target, Walmart, etc. which I find has a fairly delicate flavor with little of the sometimes objectionable protein taste; adding some unsweetend cocoa powder can boost the chocolate flavor while cutting the sweetness while the SF chocolate syrups can boost the chocolate flavor while adding some sweetness - use whichever floats your boat. I also use the protein powders in SF instant puddings along with greek yogurt to boost their protein content. I also use the EAS to blend with other protein powders that I have tried and found to strong on their protein taste or aftertaste on their own (I wind up blending a lot of things in this post op world to hit the right taste/calorie/nutrition compromise.) Adding fruit to the shakes is a common and popular addition, though check with your doctor's plan - the rationale for most of the pre-op diets is to keep low carb to improve liver condition, so they may not want you adding fruit at this time for that reason. If they're just wanting you to lose a bit of weight pre-op and get used to protein shakes while watching calories, it may fit in. Good luck and welcome to the club. -
Anyone NOT a LB success and just living with it??
Guest replied to a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, we thought that.. I went to my band Dr (Dr Geiss for you LIers) and he did his thorough check to make sure all was as it should be and it was.. you know, the floro thing.. he even said (and this is now almost 2 years later after my last fill) "are you sure you are ok with this much fill?" because the barium stuff really hung there for a few before finally seeping through. I said YES, because I DO appreciate the not gaining weight thing and am afraid that if I had less restriction, I would get bigger than I am. Can't have that! LOL So, I guess that answered the "would you consider taking it out" because, no I would not.. I truly fear I would get bigger!! I would by lying to you if I said I was living on salads and yogurt.. I DO eat around the band.. absolutely do.. but in spite of that, I don't gain weight, so it's ALMOST (like if you squinted your eyes, looked at the sun and shook your head all at the same time LOL) like I can eat whatever I want and not gain weight. AND in some weird parallel universe, I LIKE IT! LOL NO, there's no damage being done.. I mean, not that any DR has found since I've been seen and poked and check up the wazzooo LOL Hell, all this time later and it's still sitting in exactly the right place and where it was put some 3 1/2 years ago! After reading about so many slippages, erosions, etc., I was pretty proud of that! I totally anticipate being 80 yrs old and still having my old friend in there! LOL Celine -
Hey ! I am 2 weeks post op, I kno this may sound horrible but when I see people saying they gain weight, does this mean your sleeve isn't restricting you or what? Or you eating pizza burgers and fries? I say all that because it would be nice to know things will change...meaning I am 2 weeks post op and have had 3 baby spoons of yogurt....rest Water,tea,milk....so having a pretty bad dc regrets right now, would love to know hey I can get back to normal eventually and make better food decisions. Right now there are no food decisions...

Loose stools/1 wk post op
cindymg replied to GlutenFreeSingleMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Then when you go on solid foods you will likely have the opposite problem, because of the lack of fiber. Plan now to add extra powdered fiber to your food (like yogurt, s/f pudding and the like). Also stock up on stool softeners and get Metamucil and Miralax. -
Don't stock up on too much of anything, except vitamins. I bought a lot of vitamin B (sublingual), vitamin D (I tend to be deficient), and Biotin whenever CVS had buy 1/get 1 free sales. Your tastes will change drastically following surgery and you don't know what foods you will like or tolerate. For the first week or two I had greek yogurt, cream soups, sugar free pudding, sugar free Popsicles, sugar free jello, broths, and samples of flavored and unflavored protein to mix into them. I'd get two meals out of a yogurt and three or four out of a can of soup. I bought Atkins ready to drink shakes because I had always liked them and it was a quick easy meal in the early days. After I was cleared to drive I was able to go shopping and began looking for and trying different things w/protein that I could tolerate. I found most foods didn't taste 'right' especially in the first month after my surgery. I threw out a lot of food in those early days. Eventually that effect faded away but even one year out I still don't eat enough of any one thing to make 'stocking up' worthwhile except my favorite protein. It took a lot of trial and error to finally find one I liked (I threw out a lot of protein too!). :-)

You don't mention if you're taking an acid reducer. If you're not, sometimes excess acid can "feel" like hunger pains. I know when I'm taking my Prilosec, I don't feel that "growly" sensation that I used to think was hunger--since it's not happening when I take my Prilosec, it's clearly acid related, right? I agree with the folks above that planning is going to help you achieve your goals. If you're like me, sometimes you don't know what you're going to feel like eating--so make plans to have a bit of variety and some options but still be within your goals. For instance, you might keep on hand a can of chili, maybe some Soup, some cottage cheese, and some yogurt. Then when you are ready to eat, you can choose from a few appropriate foods. The Protein will help keep you full longer. I eat fruit every day, too, but I find I can't actually eat it with a protein food--the protein needs all the room/working of my stomach to get digested, I guess, so it doesn't like to share with other foods. :-) So I typically will eat my fruit (a cup of citrus or melon total per day) divided into a couple of snack-size portions that I munch on while watching television or playing on the computer. That way, when it's time for a "meal," I eat protein first (and usually only, as I say) but I still get my fruit in, and the protein keeps me from being achingly hungry even while consuming so few calories per day. So if you're not taking an acid reducer, you might talk with your doc about maybe starting one, and also see if moving your fruit to times in between protein meals helps with the hunger issue. Tiff is right, above--fruit is a nutrient-dense food, but it does not have the staying power of protein, and the natural sugar can be problematic for people who are sensitive to even small amounts of sugar. Good luck to you!!

Advice please. Today was my first day home, after 2 nights in hospital, it's bedtime here now. Today I have managed quite a lot of water, a cup of tea, quarter cup of tomato soup and a yogurt. Am I pushing it too much? I'm on full liquids for 2-4 weeks. I feel rubbish but I think that's a combination of migraine, sore incisions and gas. What should I be doing at this stage? Thanks

Does your appetite change throughout the day?
able2cope replied to LSF's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have days like that too - some days I'm just not hungry - like yesterday - I had to force myself to have a yogurt, then Cereal - I'm diabetic and was having an off day.. so that's all I felt like. Being diabetic, just eating the Protein doesn't always work for me. -
I'm two weeks post-surgery and just transitioned over to soft food. I was actually pretty surprised how easy getting fluids and things like yogurt down was. I can drink a 20 oz bottle of Water in 15-20 minutes, 6 oz thing of yogurt in 15 minutes, a cup of blended chili, etc.. That last two nights I've had tuna fish salad and scrambled egg. I was thinking my sleeve must be huge if I can eat 6 oz of yogurt or a cup of chili without batting an eye. 1/2 cup of tuna fish salad - I'm DONE. Can't even think of another bite. 1 egg with a little cheese on it - DONE. I'm glad to see the restriction kick in big-time for more solid foods. It does make me understand more about "sliders", "eating around the sleeve", "cheating the sleeve", etc.

Wow - my stomach is small...
LSF replied to lslblues's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad to hear that. I'm only 9 days post op and was the same as you. No problems with drinks, yogurt, pudding. I was wondering how my stomach is going to handle the food down the road -
hey all!! Thanks very much for all your kind words :rolleyes2: The doctor too thought at firs tthat i was eating too much/ wrong foods/ too quickly...but i assured him that i am eating 1 cup of food three times a day as directed by my dietitian, and he said that was small meals so that wasnt it. I took it upon myself (which probably wasnt a good thing to do anyway..) to not move on to the next stage, which is solids because i honestly didnt think i was ready for them...i mean my mushies are quite firm, but im not eating whole chicken or anything like that yet...My diet primarly consists of Yogurt and maybe some grapes in the morning...Lunch is generally fish and mashed sweet potato, and then dinner is generally fish again, or chicken mince, with mashed potato or Pasta...At the moment im struggling to eat things like tomato, carrot, egg, rice (which was expected) umm chicken...but mostly carrot for some bizarre reason... I think i was just in a bad mood after that appt. I realise now that he has done it for a reason, and thanks again for all your support!!!

I use to be able to use Equal and Splenda but now it does not seem to agree with me?
taz replied to readytoloselbs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It does seem odd that it would have such a severe side effect. When we can't use artificial sweeteners it is so inconvenient. Any yogurt or Protein supplemnt drinks that are low cal have so much in it. Even the flavored protein powders have it. I use the Biochem unflavored whey protein and I can use some sugar and Equal with frozen strawberries and milk or yogurt and it tastes pretty good but is not as convenient as something canned and ready to go. Like you said though, if that is the most invenient thing that is pretty small. Take care. Tina -

Wow - sorry to hear that is has been a rocky road the past few days for you. I hope the increased heart rate, and tingling went away. That is scary especially when you are home alone. I have to say, I have not been hungry at all. I actually do not want to think of food. Dr gave me a liquid diet or Protein drinks, yogurt, creamy Soup and cottage cheese. I told him today that I could not even gag down the Protein Drink. He said stick to the other items. I just feel soooo exhausted. The most I have eaten in a day this week is 3 oz of yogurt, maybe 3 oz of cottage cheese and 4oz of soup, at the most. I don't want anymore either. I have no energy at all. Not good! I have to go back to work tomorrow and have 2 little kids. Good luck - hope you are feeling a little stronger too. -
I ordered GENEPRO from Amazon. No taste. 1 tablespoon=30 grams. I add it to Soup, pudding and. Plain yogurt with fruit in a blender. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

@@alindsey June 2nd here and I am ridiculously excited. Right now I'm in the "try it before you buy it" stage...or should I say try it before investing in a 60lb tub of it. LOL Two months ago I started "training" myself to like yogurt and that has been going very well. I started with the yummy whipped sugary and have worked my way to down to plain greek yogurt with a bit of flavored crystal light powder stirred it. It has become a "habit" now and I can now relax about greek yogurt being a part of my daily menu...without wanting to gag! I'm working through some unjury packets that I bought to try...and they are tasty and mix up beautifully. I really like the chicken flavored broth! I'm also working through some Syntax nectar flavor samples...Fuzzy Navel is yum yum yummy! I want to make sure I make it through the pre/post-op liquid stage without having to think too much. I just want to be able to go to my kitchen and know whatever I grab to pour in me tastes good. I'm not waiting to be in the middle of it to have to figure it out!

3 weeks post op and need feedback
staceylynne13 replied to InnerFitnessModel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 8 weeks out and still can only eat 2 ounces of some foods. I can do greek yogurt, the triple zero. It will get better but it takes time. -
Congratulations! I'm so excited for you. Just a note: steer clear of the SpongeBob Square Pants chocolate Lagoon Cream-of-Wheat. I really enjoyed the fruit flavored packets of oatmeal, the first batches I puréed further in my Magic Bullet. I was sad when I didn't respond well to the liquid Yogurt, but when we return to Fresno, I'm honing to give it another try. It's just so yummy. My Pregresso Tomato Basil Soup became my instant pizza-flavor replacement during the full-liquid stage. I've got 2 weeks on the soft & Puréed foods, and I'm at a very satisfied level.

Hi @@chelleshocked ... it's 4 weeks post op for me and I'm also feeling good! I can't believe how much better -- and more "normal" -- I feel from week to week. eggs are awesome, and so is Greek yogurt! A few days ago I made Eggface's ham, cheese, and triple onion bites (aka crustless mini quiches), and they're fab! You can substitute ingredients easily if you aren't allowed to have meat yet. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2014/10/its-world-egg-day-8-eggceptional-recipes.html

6 weeks post op...now what?
MIJourney replied to ummsantos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agree with others protein always first. greek yogurt, refried beans, tuna or egg salad, fish, low fat string cheese or other low fat cheeses including cottage cheese. So sorry about your hubby:( Hope he's back soon. I have a friend who also had a leak:( -
Surgery was 5/29, so far great, no sickness, no pain pills needed. My surgical glue is already starting to peel off, i go back to work tomorrow. I've lost 31 pounds since my first day of my liquid diet. So 31 pounds lost in 21 days. I feel great, I have tried small bites of yogurt, mashed potatoes, refried beans, and sugarfree vanilla pudding. Nothing upset my stomach. Im still on liquid diet other then just a small bite here and there. Getting my water, and trying to get all my protein in daily. I love how I feel, im excited to see how the months to come go. Good luck to everyone on the pre op side, and good luck to us all on post op side. Keep us posted. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

So, I was sleeved on 5/15. Today, I have had scrambled eggs and yogurt and my stomach has not been happy. Had a little puking. A bit of diarrhea. I have had both foods earlier, but not the same reaction. I may just stick to the yogurt for now. Maybe eggs are too harsh. Who knows? Anyone else feel like this is a guessing game?

Kay I'm panicked a bit. I'm 5 days post op and I don't seem to have a full button at all. I moved from liquids to mush today- yogurt, pudding etc. the problem is I don't have get full. It says work up from a tsp to Tbl yet today I sat down to eat some pudding and I had to make myself stop eating when it was almost half gone rather than my body telling me to quit. Is there a problem? Did the dr maybe not cut it small enough? Should I be concerned?
