2weeks post op and wanting non liquid food
pssk replied to BillW82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my surgery the same day (vsg) and what is keeping this phase interesting for me is mixing flavors. For example, today I had a half of a cup of butternut squash soup and I added some plain/nonfat/sugar free green yogurt sort of mimicking sour cream. I am also added things like cinnamon and nutmeg to my vanilla shakes or to plain yogurt. Tuesday I can start purées and I’m almost nervous as I’m losing so fast/quickly that I worry it will slow down! Lol I honestly have no appetite and have to force myself to eat. Yes, my brain misses normal food but we can do this! We can fight the demons that made us overweight!! -
Today Breakfast Jimmy Dean Honey butter biscuit roll up with sausage, egg , and cheese. Lunch Greens salad (1 cup) with 2 slices of bacon crumbled on top ( ranch dressing 1 tablespoon ) Dinner Shrimp and scallops sautéed in butter and garlic with 1/3 cup of egg noodles Snack 1 Greek yogurt (Hyvee brand only 90 calories and 9 carbs) Snack 2 Boom chicka pop 1 cup and a snack size almond joy Well after adding this all up it isn't very good, so now I have to go drink a shake and do better tomorrow. totals without shake were 841 calories 62 carbs 50 fat 37 protein, ugh shake will make it 67 protein Just goes to show I need to be doing this. I wont always do these tallies but I will check them and post from time to time. I also need to be drinking more water.

I know I am not eating the best foods nutritionally but feel like I have to get in some easy to eat carbs to get the calories i need in. I was bouncing around with a 1-2 pound loss the past month but according to the scale this am dropped another pound. 8am-- premier shake with .5 c milk (1%) 9am- Bevita breakfast crackers (carbs and has vitamins, fiber etc) 11am - egg with olive oil, 1c spinach, and slice of cheese of 1/4c shredded cheese 1pm- yogurt sometimes with a sprinkle of granola or a few berries or 1/3 c granola cereal with 1/4 c milk now I start pushing fluids since I often feel no desire to eat because it felt like work to get all of the above in 3pm --12-16 oz milk 4:30- RX bar or some triscuits or another yogurt if I feel too full to eat/chew 5:30- 2oz meat and 1/3 c veggies and literally a tablespoon of the carb side my family eats so 1-2 french fries or a tablespoon of noodles etc- again I feel like this is work to sit down and get all of this in 7:30-- 12 oz milk 9:30-- this is not good but I am usually low on calories and carbs so 2 sheets of graham crackers sometimes 6 triscuits with 2T of hummus, maybe a tablespoon of peanut butter 10-11pm- pumpkin seeds (150 calories), maybe a 1/3 c of berries Total ends up around 1400 calories, aiming for and usually getting close to my goal 40% carb, 30% protein (around 90-100g) 30%fat Things i am not happy with- feeling the need to graze all day, eating triscuits and graham crackers vs a healthier carb, having to feel like I am forcing myself to eat a tablespoon of peanut butter or other foods at night when i see I need extra calories, fat or carbs etc. My focus has been on trying to slow down weight loss. I feel way too bony and went to see a PS re an arm lift this week (for spring surgery) and he mentioned I don't have a lot of fat left on me. I think I need to find some healthier foods that are pre-made and easy to grab and have a small serving. I am not going to cook something just to get a few bites of it.

Hey Kia! Doing good. I have a 7 day pre op diet so I started today! I wish I could do the veggies in my plan. Mine is liquids, jello, broth and yogurt. Thank God work kept my mind off the hunger! I did my pre admission testing today and had my ekg, urine, and blood work done. Even met with anesthesiologist. They gave me 3 shakes to carb load the day before surgery and the hibeclens soap to use the night before and day of surgery. Can you believe how quickly things are moving along now??? LOOKING FOR PPL WHO JUST HAD SURGERY to ask questions
MinnieSD replied to New&Improved's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi I had my Gastric Bypass surgery on 08.08.19, I wasn't nervous about it but excited to finally be getting it done. Hospital was fine, walked into my operating theatre and met the army of doctors and nurses, it was all very relaxed, music playing in the background, my surgeon came over and spoke to me and then the Anaesthetist came and told me what was happening and that was it, I was probably only in there for a few minutes before going to sleep. The surgery went well, I actually felt very well after surgery and went home after only spending 2 days and 1 night, I didn't feel much pain at all, it was a little uncomfortable and had to watch how I stood up or got on and off the bed etc but nothing out of the ordinary and what you would expect after surgery. Sleep as much as you can when you come home and walk when you're awake. The pain after surgery was totally bearable, while in hospital they gave me Oramorph which was fabulous and then told me to take pain meds for the next week, I actually stopped them after 2 days, didn't feel like I needed them, but everyone is different. With regards to your food intake what I would say is follow the plan with food, don't rush any of the stages, I didn't push how much I ate as I was scared that I may stretch my pouch (even though have been told this would be very hard to do) or something worse. You will know when you have had enough, it's a different kind of full, it's not in your stomach, you feel full in your chest/throat (hard to explain) but literally you will feel like you cannot get anything else down. You will learn to stop before you get to this stage as its uncomfortable. If it does happen lay down until it passes. I found it difficult eating if I was bent over, you need to be upright for the food to pass. The eating phases that you will go through become very tedious and you really want to rush through them but don't, these are what help you heal better and quicker, I know for myself after being on the milk diet for 2 weeks pre op all I wanted was some' normality' but you actually don't feel like eating much. Im now 10 weeks post op and can eat 'normal' food but in very small quantities. I had a follow up last week with the hospital and had been feeling very nauseous, this is apparently very common, I was prescribed anti sickness meds which have stopped it now. My nurse told me that it's better to eat 5-6 small portions every 3-4 hours when feeling like this, which I have started doing and the sickness has gone. I have tried different foods and some have not agreed with me so I know not to eat them again just yet. You have to adjust to your boundaries and what you can and can't eat anymore. If you're having the Gastric Bypass, which is what I had you have no cravings and you don't get any hunger pains, this was the first thing that I noticed after the surgery. I was told that I wouldn't feel hungry but as someone that has had a weight problem most of my life it was hard to believe this but it's 100% true, I love the fact that I don't get hungry but this you also have to pay attention to and make sure that you eat enough protein otherwise the day goes by and you realise that you haven't eaten, especially if you have a busy or demanding job. I get mine from High protein Greek yogurts, eggs, chicken, high protein peanut butter. I eat very low carbs and fats. On the 2nd phase i started drinking protein shakes, I hated them but they were so high in protein that at least i knew i was getting enough, try mixing with milk if too thick. The hardest part for me is not being able to drink much and not drink while eating, this is what I find the biggest challenge is getting the fluids in but I think most people will tell you this, it's important to keep your water bottle near and constantly sip all day, try adding some 'no sugar' lemon or blackcurrant, this helped me. I still don't think that hospitals give you enough information regarding eating after surgery and most of what I have done has been through my own research, have bought a few Bariatric cookbooks to help too You will be fine, just follow the doctors orders, good luck for Monday -
CrossFit, VSG, Calories In vs Calories Out
AZhiker replied to May Hem 143's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I started training for a triathlon when I was 7 months out (and finished it!!!). My challenge was to get enough calories in to sustain the exercise without losing weight. It's very hard when your tummy can only hold a little bit. I was already doing weights, a leg routine and lots of walking. My muscle mass was fine before and became more defined with the added swimming and biking. I had to drop the Intermittant Fasting because I simply could not get enough calories in an 8-10 hour window. So I started doing a protein shake for breakfast. During the event, I ate RX bars (210 cal, 24 carbs, 12 protein) - good amount of protein to balance the carbs, as I knew I couldn't eat a high carb load by itself - dumping would not be good in a pool or on a bike! I felt great afterward and am planning on a distance bike race next month and another tri in a few months. I am transitioning to a whole food plant based diet, which has more carbs from grains and legumes. But I still struggle to maintain weight. I am stuffed full and never hungry, but still losing each week. As I increase my training, I will have to use more RX bars, I guess, to get some concentrated calories in. I think it is important to keep your protein up. You don't want to skimp while you are training and increasing your workouts. I add protein powder to my smoothies, yogurt bowls, and soups. I have no problem getting enough protein - just enough calories. -
Anyone with PCOS not lose weight after surgery
Darktowerdream replied to Ruth9454's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
what I know about exercise Is that exercise is not for weight loss, you don’t lose weight with exercise what happens is you build muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat. I can’t recall the exact numbers but I think 1 lb of fat only burns 2-3 calories but 1 lb of muscle burns 7-10 calories. so I would think weight resistance, muscle toning and stretching would be most beneficial. for me it’s frustrating not being able to exercise. I have one of few if only medical conditions (that I know of) that exercise causes damage. I get very sick and it literally ages my muscles instead of being beneficial. my metabolism prior to surgery didn’t seem to exist. I was eating approximately 800 calories a day, at best I managed a long walk at first once a week or every two weeks but it’s slowly taken it’s toll. I would go on birding walks to take photographs but each time paid a hefty price physically. My weight started to go up and got out of control. This had happened the first time to this extent in my late teens. All doctors could say is it was metabolic disorders but not what I could do. My first battle with my weight doing strict low carb and low calorie helped. But it was impossible to maintain. I reached A decent goal and it would slowly slide upwards. if I said that already I’m sorry. I find it interesting how some people can eat a lot of calories and even carbs and still lose. I finally hit around 66lb loss from April 29th so around close to six months? My calories range sometimes a little less than 300 Calories if I can’t help it to a little over 400 a good balance is 370. Protein tends to be sometimes a little below 50 grams, to a little above 60 but a good average is 50. I haven’t counted carbs but probably never more than 20-30 net carbs. the problem is that each person is very different in what works for them. My loss has slowed to a crawl but I’ll take anything I can get. What I hope is that this is the tool that helps me maintain long term. My worry is not reaching goal and maintaining it there while eating normal amount of calories. I think I’d hoped I could eat a little more calories or at least worry about them a little less than I do now. For some reason my body didn’t tolerate eating more veggies in the past. Which makes no sense to me, I dip my toe into slightly more normal foods but still rely on the basics like protein powder mixed in TwoGood yogurt, cottage cheese (usually good culture since it comes in individual containers) occasionally poached or soft boiled eggs, sometimes BariatricPal soups like mixing creamy chicken pasta with a packet of beef broth) I might be repeating myself (I’m sorry) I tried things like tuna and got sick. I was told I’ve a stricture I’m not sure the status of that. My nutritionist wants me trying soft vegetables and different proteins. having a colonoscopy and endoscopy threw me off track but thankfully my recent surgery didn’t. At some points my calories ranged a little higher ie. 480 but I tend to vary the calories and protein daily. I tend to see things move by ounces. Sometimes crawl or stall. May my loss was about 24.4 lbs, June 9.7 lbs, July my weight loss averaged 9 lbs, August 7.9 lbs, September 7.9 lbs, and October 5.1 lbs. Total 64lbs from weight at day of surgery of 203lbs. I was 205lbs at last nutritionist weigh in. 208 lbs at my doctors office. BMI 40. Since I have a smaller frame and short height I wish to reach a goal of under 110lbs the last time I got to about 124lbs for now I’d take that over where I was headed prior to surgery. Of course then there is the extra and saggy skin. -
i eat an oikos triple zero yogurt every morning. there’s 15 grams of protein in 5pz so it’s a good deal if you’re that far into your post surgery diet!

I was eating reduced/low sugar greek yogurt 2 days post-op from my sleeve.

Good for you! I actually preferred the liquid stage. Shakes for breakfast, broth for lunch then maybe a yogurt (thinned out with soy milk) for dinner. Just easier! @Mikeyy -
Although I can't eat chocolate because of allergy, I just bet the Cookies and Cream protein shake and Greek yogurt would be a good pretend lierr- calorie cheesecake with a chocolate crumb crust, maybe not so pretty to gaze on. but would be pleasant to taste.

I was allowed Greek yogurt during liquid phase and had no issues.

I had greek yogurt with no problem. I heard it was recently added to the OK list, just make sure it isn't flavored. It shoudl be fine.

I am doing the sugar free jello, yogurt, and protein bars as a "sweet treat" for now. Eventually I will have a little treat, but it is far too soon for me right now. -

Desert substitutes
JMA2019 replied to jasmineinmymind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is real life.. I believe in everything in moderation. I love having a chobani flip yogurt almost daily for dessert if I have the calories to spare. I’m 6 weeks post op. I didn’t do this to deprive myself and not live my life. It’s ok to have something sweet, just not a huge amount like I would have done pre surgery. -

Due to the limited stomach capacity I am trying to eat the best nutritional foods with vitamins and minerals I can. Besides protein requirements what are some foods you eat to get the best nutritional bang for your buck? I still have a premier protein shake daily. I eat yogurt and spinach daily. I eat pumpkin seeds and or walnuts often too. I know a varied diet with different fruit and veggies is good but sometimes i want to just stick with something I know I will get a lot of nutrients from. I don't eat beans often and think maybe I should try to add some to my diet. -
I'd like to know how you guys feel about having desert like foods. There are really 2 schools of thought: either "everything is OK in moderation" or you abstain 100% because sugar is an addiction. I am 9 months out and I'm still craving sweets despite having stopped all deserts. I dont eat protein bars, no cookies, pie, ice cream, frozen yogurt etc. I am wondering if there is any way I can put out the fire so to speak by allowing myself very small amounts of healthier sweets. I mean, this is for life right? I see a lot of keto deserts online and I wonder who has been able to eat these in moderation and still keep losing. I saw this recipe this morning and it looks amazing but I'm wondering if this is a slippery slope, or a gateway drug to eating real ice cream. I'd like to think I could handle it but who knows. Just FYI I do not dump at all. https://listotic.com/easy-keto-chocolate-frosty/ Any thoughts?

Thin it out with protein drink. Tastes yummy! Love the Premier Pro with Greek yogurt. Make it like a yogurt soup consistency. Bananas and Cream, Peaches and Cream, and Strawberries and Cream with it is the bomb dot com!

I was told greek yogurt is fine, but ever doctor is different.
