Is "banding" The Sleeve A Common Practice?
TheNewSusie replied to Estrovan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds neat, but even though it's stitched in place to prevent slips don't you have to end up taking the band out within 5-10 years? Can it still erode ? What r the complications ? It's still a band, right? -
Hi! My husband is in the Air Force and we are stationed at Lackland AFB, TX. I was seriously considering the RNY surgery, but was too scared of the possible complications and side effects. Just this past week I found out that Tricare is now covering the lap band surgery. I had said before that if they ever did I would do it in a heartbeat. However, we will be moving this summer (more than likely) and I don't want to start the process of getting approved and then have to start it over when we move. I just hope where ever we move I will be able to find a good surgeon. Does anyone know how to look for a great surgeon in the bariatric field? Or have any tips of what to look for? Also, my BMI is only 34 right now however I am borderline diabetic, I have PCOS, hypertension, high cholesterol, and had my gall bladder removed 10/07. I could still lose 100lbs and be in my normal wt. range though. Also, I'm looking for people's experiences with getting the lap band. What I can look forward to, or not? I'm very excited for this journey! I know that with the lap band I'm not going to drop 60lbs in a month or anything and this is particularly why I chose the lap band. I really wanted something that will help me keep off the wt. more effectively than just diet and exercising. I really see this as a tool to lose wt. more than just a miracle wt. loss procedure. Thanks in advance for all your advice!:wink2:

nervous about surgery now
Tanya_cotto replied to Thundarump's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The gas is starting, but its not as bad as i was thinking it would be! The pain is very little for me! It was just the straight lap band (err.. Realize Band) , no hernia or stones the DR. did a terrific job! You do need to check your Rx for complications I had been on Lexapro for a bit, but it was too expensive so i switched to Paxil. But i know you can't take Advil, ibuprofen or aspirin while on these meds take Tylenol if you need it (theu have liquid bottles at walmart or CVS) If you're in a hospital, you can request a tranquilizer if you're really needing it. But I was honestly more curious as to were i was going to be! -
Hi Everyone! My name is Kim and I'm new here. I was looking to talk to people who have had lap band surgery that are in a similar to me in their goal. I am 5'5" tall and weigh 295lbs. I live in Southern California and have a referral for the weight loss surgery process. My medical group requires 6 months of classes (2x per month) prior to the surgery. Did anyone else have to do this? If so, was it beneficial? I have one child (almost 2 yrs old) and was really hoping to have more children. When I was pregnant I ate really well and lost 50 lbs (while pregnant) and since he was born, I have gained all of it back and another 25 lbs. One of my biggest concerns is not being to have children after the proceedure. Anyone have information on having children after the proceedure? I am terrified to have gastric bypass and feel more comfortable with the lap band proceedure but I have to do something. I really just don't want to have complications and possibly die from either proceedure, I have a child to live for. I am sure I will be posting more

but, none the less I was sleeved on Monday, December 20th. They told me to show up at the hospital by 11:30 and do everything to prep for my 1:30 surgery. I decided to be there by 11 in case I could get in early, I'd be good to go. But, I ended up waiting for at least two hours before I even seen my surgeon. I kept joking with everyone. I really wasn't nervous at all. I was more annoyed with running behind schedule then ANYTHING. I didn't have to get a Foley since I went to the bathroom before the surgery. And, I am so thankful for that. I did NOT want one of those. My husband and I joke that I have a 90 year old bladder. I have NO issue peeing what so ever. However, after surgery it did make me nervous because I had to kind of force it out. And, it made my stomach hurt a little. I am still in some pain, and still taking my pain meds. But, hoping to stop them ASAP. I wasn't able to walk around like I wanted while in the hospital because I was in pain and SO nauseous. But, today I found out why my side was hurting so much. They left the stinkin' heart monitor piece on me. So it kept sticking to my binder. Now I've taken it off I feel so much better. Leak test came back great. No complications during surgery. Now, I just wait and recover.

As per my surgeon, after a recent encounter with a stomach virus, if you are ill and going to vomit, then that is what is going to happen. No, it's not the healthiest event for someone with a band, but single incidents should have no long term complications with your band. I got my virus from my grandsons when I had been banded around 9 months...I had to have a small unfill to give my stomach an opportunity to calm after the irritation. Post illness and prior to the unfill, I stayed on liquids, and could not eat any solid food after 2 days, so I realized that intervention from my surgeon would be required. I recently had the same amount of Fluid replaced and thankfully there was no significant aftereffects from vomiting. It does happen, just do your best to minimize the incidents is what I learned through my experiences.

Stuck, Slipped, Or Normal - Am I Fighting Myself?
JimR915 replied to JimR915's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
So...here's the scoop. Upper GI showed a "major league" slip (doctor's words). No Fluid passed through the band for more than 15 minutes. I was admitted on Friday for emergency surgery. Surgery was postponed, but then performed on Saturday morning. My band was removed and now I am in healing mode. I am scheduled to have a new band put in between Christmas and New Years. The doctor said that, while a slip is a rare complication (about 2 - 3% of cases), they most often happen after a person has lost a lot of weight. My issue, I think, was that I had lost a lot of weight, band was too tight. I started vomiting, which agitated the band/stoma. Doctor failed to diagnose it multiple times and kept unfilling me. I kept telling him that the unfills were doing no good, but he waited almost 6 months to schedule an upper GI. I can't blame him though. I simply wasn't forceful enough about him scheduling an upper GI. I'm on the mend, but my advice to people, after having gone through what I've gone through over the past 6 months, is to be firm with your doctor. If you are having problems swallowing/keeping liquids and solids down after a significant unfill, insist on an upper GI. My understanding is that the sooner a slip is diagnosed, the better chance that it can be corrected without surgery. -

JoleneH posted a topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I'm pretty sure I've made my mind up that I need to have this surgery. Please share your experience. How was surgery outside of US? Did you have complications? Weight loss? Scared but really excited. SO tired of being sick and tired because I'm too heavy. Thank you! -

I have felt just like you!! Im recently sleeved since 4/2014 and have had No complications, i was back to normal on day 3 of being sleeved. I have went from size 16 to 14 in a month! When I run into a stall i find this site to help me and know that its ok and there are others who face the same problems i have -
Thanks Ladies! I HATE these threads b/c they can be so dangerous for the OP if they listen to the garbage above. Come 3 years (or whenever) down the road, they'll be on here crying b/c of the complications with their band that they probably caused when they didn't follow their surgeon's advice. It's sad and potentially dangerous. I really hope they're okay later down the road.

Going to MEXICO - Ortiz?
Bob Barnett replied to Knip_toh's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
There are tons of positive reviews on this and other forums of Dr Elias Ortiz. In 5 weeks post op and he still checks up on me. I had absolutely no side effects. A lighter me will baby you in TJ. Abraham and Orlando are always available and they plan outings to local shops. Dr Ortiz and Dr Hernandes check on you every day. Multiple times in The hospital and multiple times in The hotel. I would not choose another surgeon in The US even if the cost were the same. Eventually he will have a leak bc they just happen but as of now he has never had one. Also, read up on the various forums. Most of the problems come from the US. I keep touch with many alighterme patients and we all feel great. None of us had complications and are able to eat and drink comfortably. I feel so lucky to have used them. And like I stated, Dr Ortiz still keeps in touch and answers questions. They also have a post op care c coordinator, Ronda, that calls once a week to discuss the different stages of diet. All around first class service and surgery. Bob -

For every person that has a complication posted on this forum there are 10x as many that do not. It is good to know about potential issues but you can be paralyzed by some of the commentary and the worry that goes with it. I suggest you do the reading, listen to what people say and determine what does or does not apply to you. There is terrific information here if you look for it. For me it has been a valuable resource. Being able to talk with others about similar situations has been invaluable. Understanding the risks associated with the surgery should be part of your decision making process. I knew and understood the potential concerns with the surgery and was willing to proceed, because the long term benefit was too great not to participate. I had a complication that I did not think would happen to me but it did. I dealt with it and moved on. It has been the best decision I made for myself in a long time. I feel great and my life has changed for the better. Maybe it is just me but I couldn't dwell on the what if's once I understand them and commit to move forward. -
@Proud2BMe I am going to call my doctor tomorrow on my day off. I really don't feel that I am doing this correctly. I have spoke to a dietitian from the clinic who informed at the time of my soup it can be whatever and high in sodium but that does not sound right. My main fear is my liver does not shrink and cause complications. My surgery is Dec.17 and I think this is the last day for the year. I have only lost 1lb in 6 days . They told me to stay away from the scale but I can not help it.

who has had there band longer then 5 years?
Hynita posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
im just curious who's band has lasted longer then 5 years with zero complications? mine only lasted 2 years... so just wanna see long term how long everyone else's last. I thought id have mine forever but that didnt happen no band now for 2 months sleeve soon july 1st. -
I can soooo relate. I've had several complications that required unfills. It's a lot harder to get back to the green zone after an unfill, for me anyway. I'm a tiny bit tight now, but so afraid to have another unfill... It seems like they take the tiniest amount out and it opens up the hunger flood gates!!!

Pondering Question to ask...
Tiffykins replied to Gabriella21's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you Ada. I initially lost 23-25lbs with my band, then complications started, lost restriction, husband deployed, and I started gaining back my weight. I started off at 270 with the band, the day of my revision, I weighed in at 263. So, I technically only lost 7 pounds with the band. I've lost 114-115 with just the sleeve in about 6.5 months. -
Here is a good Site to Check and Read about prolapse's I would be concerned as to WHY? it occurred so EARLY in your banding ..Good Questions to ask your Doctor. GOOD LUCK! Please keep us posted. my Gastric Plication Weight Loss Surgery journey
farmgal replied to lila921's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
lila921, I want to assure you that if you are having complications you will definitely know! I did and there was a lot of very intense pain, so much so that I knew I had to get to the emergency room ASAP. I also want say that the statistics for complications with Plication are low, something like less than 1%. I am 6 months and 1 week out from the first surgery and have lost a little over 70 lbs with about 30 to go. Hang in there, you'll do great! -
Update for Jan 2013 sleevers - how is everyone doing in March
Tinaatl replied to canuckpaisa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 1/29 and I'm down 33 pounds including pre-op diet. I'm thrilled that I've had zero complications and I love my sleeve but I'm stalled and a little frustrated. I get all my protein and fluids easily and probably too much exercise! I know it will pass and will just continue to do my best but its hard! -
I'm curious....
Northwest_Nance replied to Annie0341's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For awhile, I had a very hard time deciding between the two. Before I really did my research, I wanted bypass surgery and I wasn't even considering the lapband. I thought of the band as a step-sister of bypass. But then I started diving into the research. I went to seminars and support group meetings, read every medical column and on-line post-surgery blog I could find, watched You Tube surgery diaries, and watched the surgery being performed on You Tube. The more I learned about gastric bypass, the more I started thinking of it as drastic bypass. Taking healthy organs and cutting them an re-routing things didn't seem right. The life-long malabsorbtion issues concerned me also. All in all, the risks seemed overwhelming to me. I kept telling myself that lots of people have very successful bypass surgery, which I know is true. But I couldn't get rid of my underlying anxiety about it. Still, I spent several weeks changing my mind every 30 minutes, it seemed..... bypass vs. lapband. I was driving myself crazy. In the end, the decision was sort of made for me. I was self-pay, and bypass was really more than I could afford to spend. Also, I knew that if I had any surgical complications, treatment for those would come out of my pocket too.... so not only was lap band less expensive, but the risk of complications was lower. I was relieved to have the decision made for me that way. -
Hello I am still looking into having Lapband done, but I want to be prepared for anything so please tell me any complications you had while in surgery or after! Thanks
