  1. My gastric sleeve was done 1/22/22. I had a 10 day pre-op liquid diet which was a lot and lonely. My nurse was supposed to call and check on me about half way thru- she never did- nor did she return my voicemails. I also was in a weird schedule shift at work so I worked 8 of the 10 days- which I think was a blessing in disguise since I was busy and not focusing on what I was or wasn’t eating. Due to COVID it was a drop off pick up situation. So my mom dropped me off at 5:20 am. I was in communication with her until my nurse anesthetist came in and they put my phone in my bag. I don’t remember anything after the operating nurse coming in and putting my hair net on me around 7:20 am. The next thing I knew I woke up in recovery with a nurse sitting on either side of me. They were super great- my mouth was very very dry so they let me suck on a sponge. I was also very close to the desk in recovery so I could tell my mom was on the phone with them. I immediately requested my phone from my bag and called my mom. It was about 11:30am and she hadn’t heard from my surgeon- she was not happy. But had a lot of relief hearing from me. The conversation was short as I was still out of it. The nurses also put some Vaseline on my lips since they were super dry. My room wasn’t ready yet so I was able to just relax in recovery for a bit. Lots of naps in and out and some texting with friends. Once my room was ready the wheeled me away from recovery. Once I got to my room I was given goals. -Manage nausea -Manage pain - go to the bathroom -take a sips test -walk around -sit in the chair I didn’t find my self nauseous until they gave me a different pain med via my IV. Luckily I didn’t throw up and they gave me some spearmint patch on my gown which was nice. Pain was managed via IV for the first bit. I really felt like I had to go to the bathroom so the nurse helped me on my feet within about 2 hours of being in my room. No luck on the bathroom- but I found I could get up and move. After that we did my sips test at 1:15 which went really well. After that I got white grape juice watered down and water to sip on. Goal was 5 med cups (2 tablespoons) an hour. After that another nurse came in wanting my to start walking. He helped me into my really comfy pj pants- no open booty walks for me! We did 2 laps around my ward. I ended up in the locked pediatric location so they were a little more lax with me about walking on my own. During this time I also attempted to go to the bathroom a few more times. Finally before 8pm my nurse came in turned the sink on and basically told me to relax and I was in my head about not going. ALAS- it worked- a ton of relief happened from being able to go. That night I walked more- drank more- slept more and prayed I was gonna be able to go home. I swear every time I was falling asleep the nurse aid came in to take my vitals. ☹️ the nurse aid also had no knowledge base in what I had done so when I asked for broth she told me to order… there were no ordering food for sleeve patients. The broth was in the kitchen on the floor so that was a bit of a run around but it all worked out well. The next morning a different bariatric surgeon came in to talk to me- mine didn’t come in on Sundays…. But he was cool and told me I could go home! So I got my paper work and then a nurse came in unhooked my from my IV so I got dressed. My nurse came in gave me a cart and some directions and away I went. I got my meds filled there and then waited for my mom to pick me up. The first day I was home I was very slow moving. Ended up sleeping in a recliner because it hurt too much to get out of bed. Monday and Tuesday went similar- very quiet working on getting liquids in and moving around as much as possible. Today I can get up much easier and moving around a lot more. Since I’ve been home I’ve only taken Tylenol for pain killers- they gave me more but I haven’t felt like the pain was bad enough to use them. Here are my number so far… Starting process- 270.9 Surgery day- 258.6 2 days home- 256.6 So far I’ve lost 14 pounds. I can’t wait to see where I am in a month. I’ll definitely keep posting my journey here. Wish me luck!

    End goal weight

I got a DXA scan, assumed I would lose 5-10% of my muscle mass, and picked the weight based on wanting to be below 20% body fat. That end goal changes as my body comp changes, but I guessed 240 and I was exactly on target.

    Hi

Im 10 weeks post op. Started at 256, SW 244 and I am 216 today. Lol. I have been on a stall and flunctuatung by 2 pounds for weeks. Slow loser as well. I feel like I am doing something wrong but everyone seems to say I am fine so I am trying to just be ok with it and stick with my plan.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Mine was Sept 10. I am down 69 pounds. I'm feeling frustrated because I feel like it should be coming off faster than that. I guess I'm just impatient. I have been putting the work in.

We all lose at our own rate. Some are slow losers, others fast. Both are fine. Your weight loss seems great so far @rgwtwins. About 40lbs over 10 weeks is about 4 lbs a week. That’s pretty damn good. Celebrate those pounds you’ve lost. Yes, stalls can be damn frustrating but they do happen & unfortunately can occur a few times. Usually a stall will break in its own time without you doing anything different. If you’re worried, meet with your dietician just to ensure you are not missing something. Sometimes a small tweak will kick start your loss again especially if it’s persisting for more than 4 weeks. Yes @Cheryl A, the higher your starting weight the faster you tend to lose at first but it will slow. If your medical team is happy with your rate of loss, enjoy your weight loss too. It’s probably a bit of a shock but you’re doing well.
  6. I finally did it my surgery was 01/17/22 in Mexico.. Post op bypass 8 days and feeling great my blood pressure is normal 1st time in a couple of years now

    10 weeks post op

Are you listening to yourself? "I've only lost between 39-41 pounds in 10 weeks." That's FANTASTIC!!!! Have you ever lost that much before in that short amount of time? Doubt it. The process is working. Stalls happen. Exercises affect muscle mass. You've got this. Don't worry . . it's all good. Keep up the good work!!!
  8. I’ve only lost between 39-41 in total including pre op. HW 256, SW 244, CW 215-217. I had a stall at 6 weeks and also gained 2 pds. I went from 215 to 217. Since then I have been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds. I do get my protein in but struggle with water intake. I average about 50 oz a day. My dr put my calories at 800-1000 a day, protein at above 80. Nut told me not to be concerned about fat or carbs at this point. I just started to work out so no muscle gain at this point. I am very frustrated. Anyone have a similar issue or any advice to give ?????

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I had my sleeve surgery on Oct 27, 2021 and have also struggled with protein and water intake especially in the beginning. I'm continuing to lose but I notice it's defiantly easier at home where I have everything setup. I've started traveling a bit and I've noticed difficulties with keeping the regiment especially with getting enough protein. I have gotten used to taking my Purist Thermal 32oz everywhere with me which I love. my goal is to drink the thermal by noon and refill and finish the 2nd one by bedtime. For me this has worked well! I had a couple other thermals in the beginning but by the end of the day the drink didn't taste the same. This doesn't happen with the Purist thermal, and why I've bought a couple of them. Also I've been doing the Supernatural Exercise program on a VR Oculus Quest 2 headset for movement and steps. Its amazing, super fun and really gets me moving and working a sweat in the comfort of my own home. If you haven't seen it you should check it out as it been a game changer for me and is only 10 to 30 mins. I still feel that I could have lost more than I have but I focus like many of you on that I'm still going in the right direction.
  10. Looking for advice, will try to be brief. Thank you for allowing me to join your community! As the title explains, I have had two operations in the last 12 years. I have had issues with alcohol in the past which led to my revision. Anyway, I will complete a 'my story' post soon. Today I am trying to determine if what I am experiencing is normal or not. Thank you, in advance, for your candid advice. I developed GERD-like symptoms about nine months ago. I tried to moderate it with diet (less spicy / tomato), a few rounds of Prilosec. About seven months ago I gave up all alcohol in-part due to the painful symptoms. I had greatly moderated from my two bottle a day heyday, but I still drank. I am proud of my progress, but meetings may be in my future. At three months, Dr. ordered an endoscopy. I had the procedure October 30, 2021. Results showed that I was inflamed, but no ulcers. 'Just stay on Prilosec, forever if you have to' is the advice I received. After endoscopy, I decided to give up all carbonated drinks (I was hooked on about 100+ ounces a day of Diet Dr. Pepper). My go-to drink is now water. Also have added a lot of unsweetened iced tea and some coffee. A few days after New Year, my appetite started to decline. Just the thought of food was making me not feel well. I work from home and I fell into a habit of: one yogurt in the AM, protein drink at noon if hunger strikes, then just maybe 10 bites of anything around 4pm. Dinner at 7, maybe 20 bites over two hours. Hunger pains come on strong at times, but go away fast with 2-4 bites of anything.. As of today, Jan 23, my appetite is still just about 30% / 40% of what it was. I still find myself feeling like I have to 'force' myself to eat sometimes. Nothing sounds or tastes very good. I had a colonoscopy in December. Came back normal with one non-issue polyup (sp). Last week, I ran out of Prilosec. I decided to see if maybe I could get away with an as-needed solution. Big mistake. For the last three nights I have been awakened with extreme pain in my stomach. I have been taking Pepcid and Rolaids / Tums as needed. I plan to restart Prilosec tomorrow. Not sure why my stomach is still on fire??? I have a rather bland meat and potato diet. I quit alcohol and all carbonated drinks. Maybe a liquid fast and 100 Hail Mary's? This is my theory about my appetite issue: I think giving up the pop has resulted in far less bloating in my small stomach. Perhaps this has allowed it to heal back to a normal, or less inflamed, size. I cannot eat as much, but if I space out my eating, I'm sort of fine. I'm not sure about the mental aspects of this situation or how they corollate in parallel to the physical issues. However, the last time I felt this way (loss of appetite, could barely eat) was just before my emergency revision. Thankfully I have not developed the abdominal pains of that episode, just the eating issue. Just for context: I am a 47 year old male, about 260 pounds. I worry about constriction due to scar tissue, I was warned to look out for this. Thank you for any thoughts or advice! Matt
  11. Thanks! That's helpful, I guess this is what they mean. I'm doing the same, trying to lower my caffeine, and slowly weaning off the seltzer, the amount of water they suggested is mad crazy though. I'm now 3.5 lbs down out of 10. I lose weight easily initially, just seems like they could have spelled this out in simple terms! The insurance requirements are rough for me, as I have little margin for loss, but really need this for my health!

    Knee surgery

I had my sleeve in 2015. Did pretty good at keeping my knee replacement off for a few more years. Ended up getting really bad again in 2019 and had both knees replaced in summer 2020 & gained 50lbs back after. I wish I did my knees before my sleeve.. I ended up having RNY a few months ago due to GERD & regain but regret everything about the RNY. (long story) Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)

Hello! My program has been getting patients up to/over 1200 cals asap. I have been on solid foods since week 4. My program focuses more on texture, and what to have more often vs less often (ie Protein vs say candy). I have grapes usually everyday, and a small banana. My carbs per day is between 120-150 usually, with 80-107g of protein. Weight loss is slower now, as I am at 10 months post op...but I have lost 120 lbs thus far, with that amount of carbs and calories pretty much the entire time. I eat potatoes, pasta and rice, and bread....just significantly less and less often than I used to. Hope that helps!

    Topical NSAIDS?

Yes, I'm 19 years post op. RNY. I use Diclofenac gel a lot!
  15. Howdy, all, I had the gastric sleeve surgery on 1/13/22 so I am 9 days post-op. For the past two days, I have been unbelievably exhausted, fatigued, and achy. I feel like it is getting worse. Today I have been crying almost non-stop. Not because of pain just emotional fatigue I guess. (Kept crying while watching the movie "Air Force One". It is not a sad movie. I am hardly taking in fluids, doing about 8 ounces every hour. Alternating between water and Premier Protein Clear. Still, no food but can sip broth. I was walking but no longer as it is too tiring and I feel like I will fall. I have not called the Doctor as it is the weekend and the on-call will I'm sure would basically tell me if I am concerned then I should go to the ER. I am thinking maybe I should at least they will probably give me an IV for fluids for dehydration if that's the case. A year ago I had a very bad case of COVID-19, thankfully recovered (still can't smell anything) and since then I have had both VAX shots and the booster. I mention that because the exhaustion is reminiscent of that. Any suggestions? Please help. Thank you!

  17. Every single one of my doctors encouraged me to get bariatric surgery because they said that it would cure all my comorbidities. I have type 2 diabetes, idiopathic intercranial hypertension, migraine, GERD, and hypertension all of which they said would go away. I think I should have realized that was super optimistic. These are the same doctors that said if I lost 10% of my body weight, all of these would get better and they didn't. Well I've had the surgery. I've lost 93lbs so far and ... I still have every single one of those problems. I feel a bit mislead or maybe just broken. I have other medical problems besides those, they were just the ones they blamed on my weight. I like losing weight but had gotten my hopes up about being less impacted by these other diseases and it didn't pan out. Did it work out for anyone else and they actually had other medical problems resolve after surgery?
  18. Hi, I just started with a Bariatric Center with the goal of gastric sleeve, and I'm confused enough it's frustrating. Had my first visit with surgeon, he told me that for my insurance, I should lose 10 lbs (no more without endangering my insurance).. Seems like it's five months until surgery, possibly six. I then attended a (no lies, pretty bad) online group nutritional presentation, that really skimmed over things like no caffeine and no carbonated bees, and was also informed that I had responsibilities to make ALL my pre op appointments myself, but I haven't been given any list of labs/tests to do so. I have no diet assigned... ? No instructions were specific about what I should be eating right now, but am trying to go for a LOT more protein and a LOT less carbs. Am I supposed to be starting with protein shakes? They mentioned, but no real clear direction. No followup appointments with the bariatric center have been scheduled as yet, no one has returned my call of last week, basically begging for my pre op appointment list. I try to be patient but am definitely a type A person who likes to plan. I am worried about losing too much weight and very confused about what specifically my diet IS. Already down about 2.5 pounds. I don't do well with uncertainty I guess. Also, the changes over the past two weeks, eating less, the ever=present journalling of food, the appointments I have been called for (apparently, not everything was my responsibility), the trying to lessen the caffeine, and my beloved sodastream plain seltzers, is difficult. I'm definitely planning to call the center with more specific questions this week, and in hopes I receive a call back, but can anyone give me a feel for what the first couple weeks in a program are like, and should I relax about what feels like chaos?

    Gastric bypass issues

Gradycat said it. The one thing I am happy about with sleeve is that My labs are good vitamin wise with only a multivitamin and Calcium at 10 months out. I am hoping I will be able to get off the vitamins alltogether once I reach maintenance. With bypass people tend to need more vitamins.

    End goal weight

I picked a weight at the high end of a “normal weight” bmi for my height. that number was 195. I have gone 10 pounds passed that at this point. i adjusted my goal to be 165. Which means I have another 20 pounds to lose

    Gastric bypass sleeve

I had the sleeve then due to reflux I had to get a revision to a gastric bypass. I wish I knew that gastric bypass is far more effective for me in regards to weight loss, no reflux and no bowel issues. I would've gone straight to having the gastric bypass. I haven't had any problem maintaining my nutrition. Like the others, I take my MV every day and calcium supplements if I don't get enough calcium from my diet. My sleeve was on the large side so if you do decide to go this route, ask your surgeon what size your stomach will be. Mine started off at 10 ounces. I never stretched it but it was difficult to maintain a calorie deficiency. With the bypass, everything seems so natural for me. I feel great, small amounts satisfy me and literally zero side effects as far as bowel, acid reflux... Etc. Hope this helps.

  24. losing 10 lbs, when you're at or very near a normal BMI, is REALLY tough. I've said this before, but I remember back when I attended Weight Watchers meetings when I weighed 300+ lbs, listening to these slightly overweight people screaming and moaning about hard it was to lose 10 lbs. I just wanted to roll my eyes at them. Now I totally get it..
  25. I know most folks here can relate - I'm well over a year out and these last 10lbs to my "real" goal are just killing me. I jump back on the bandwagon for a week or so and lose 2-3 lbs and then gain them back for no apparent reason (other than hormones and such) which of course puts me in a mood to just give up and go back to normal maintenance... then again, lose/gain the same 2-3 lbs over the next few weeks. Particularly when everyone is commenting on how great you look and "WOW, you are killing it, you look smaller every time I see you." No dammit - I want to lose at least another 10-20 lbs... I know what I need to do, just can't seem to get in the right headspace for more than a week or two.
