@@smallbmi Keto is not like Atkins but more like Atkins induction. I doubt UK Cathy is doing any shakes on Keto as she is almost 4 years out. I only make a shake as a snack- maybe once a week if I didn't hit my protein numbers for the day- as I too am 4 years out. -

Hello, so I know that this is bad but I'm wondering if post-op after a few months if I wanted to try the keto diet, can we have meats such as sausage, pastrami, steak? Obvioulsy that won't be my entire diet it'll be mixed in with lots of non starchy vegetables but wanted to know if those meats were allowed. -

Why on earth would you do the Keto diet after surgery? It’s terribly restrictive and you’ll struggle with dehydration and risk dumping because of the high fat. -

I’ve been drinking lots of water. Also I’m hypothyroid so the nutritionist has me on lower carb but not keto. Do you think resistance would be better than cardio? I am two weeks post op and spoke to my Dr the other day. She told me protein was vital in the early stages to help prevent hair loss. Additionally I had started taking Biotin in January when I started Keto (prior to WLS) - it took about 6 months for the Biotin to kick in and give me much thicker / healthier hair than I had starting the year. Biotin works, but in my opinion, it takes months to get results and if we're not taking in enough protein early on, we will suffer hair loss.

Not sure about what your post op diet looks like. My surgeon was very clear and laid out a very simple eating plan. Specific meal sizes that were initially all chicken, steak, fish.....then at 6 months begin adding crunchy vegetables. So....by definition....it's a keto diet to begin with so there is no other strategy for me but to follow the normal post op diet. Stalls are what occur when I don't. -

How bad is Gerd after Sleeve?

Well let me chime in here- I am 4 years post op!!!! I had pretty significant GERD way BEFORE my surgery, and in fact it was a huge mitigating factor in my surgery. my surgeon told me that the reduction we both expected in weight would easily eliminate my GERD, so either surgery was an option. I chose VSG in 2014. I lost about 70 lbs total and felt great. I took the occasional PPI for the first 4-6 months during that huge weight loss. Then...well about 2 years post op I regained a lot of my weight and GERD returned. I went back on a PPI. last fall I made an appointment with my surgeon who said that I REALLY had to lose all of the regain, and that if the GERD didn't resolve, I would probably face a revision. Around the same time I had an EGD and got some ugly news from my GI doc. That sparked a huge drive in me, I went full on Keto and have re-lost all of my regain!!! BUT...my GERD is still present and not getting any better. I know that I DO have a sliding hiatal hernia that may be reacting to the fat in Keto, so I just keep pushing and hope that by the time I see my GI doc in fall, it will be gone.. So yes, reflux after surgery can be and IS a real issue. for me, I honestly wish I would have just had the bypass 4 years ago, because I STILL face that option, even 4 years out!! EDITED TO ADD: I was formally diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus in 2012 but thankfully, no other positive screens since that year. -

I did switch from synthroid to naturthroid so maybe that needs to titrate. I have done the Paleo and Keto thing and even when I fell off carb wagon, I haven't felt hunger like this. It is if I never had the surgery because I can eat a lot more too (I know about slider foods etc. etc.) I saying I could eat half a plate of food, now I can eat a whole plate almost over night. It is a bit scary. -

You can definitely do keto, but it might not be especially high fat for a while--most bariatric nutritionists seem to favor a low-fat, low-carb diet for new patients. And very few people get through the first few weeks without something artificial. (I relied on sugar-free jello, sugar-free popsicles, and SO MANY PROTEIN SHAKES.) If you're really dedicated, though, you could probably minimize most of that. For instance, Eggface suggests "double milk" (1 cup Milk mixed with 1/3 cup Nonfat Dry Milk Powder = 16 grams of protein per 8 oz. serving) as one option. Most plans won't force you to eat beans or fruit or high-carb veggies, though; the focus is very much on protein sources, mostly animal-based ones. If you're worried about dumping from high-fat keto, you might consider discussing the option of the sleeve instead of the bypass with your surgical team. (There are people with sleeves who experience dumping, but it's pretty rare.) But like Matt said, not everyone who goes bypass has a dumping problem from fat, either. -

I get 60+ grams of protein a day, but try to get at least half from plant based healthy carbs (beans, nuts, whole grain breads, peas, lentils, seeds, protein pasta, potatoes, oatmeal) Am definately NOT a keto person and I don't count carbs. I DO, however avoid high glycemic carbs that cause rebound hunger. I eat every little sugar or processed carbs. (if I eat them...they're part of my 75 calories of "sweets"...and I don't always eat them. Nice to know they're there, though!) I keep my meats incredibly low fat. Use olive oil or avocado for almost all fat. I eat mostly fish, chicken breast and extremely lean steak if I eat meat. I LOVE a veggie burger, mycoprotein meat substitutes, etc. I'm a fruit bat. Love fruit and eat a LOT of fruit. Am particularly fond of dried figs for sweeteners in stuff lately. Natural sugar+high quality fiber is a win for me. I eat watermelon and strawberries a lot. I do fermented foods and foods with fiber like split peas...cause my microbiologist kid keeps telling me I need to build good gut microbiota. I love culinary zing. Ginger, garlic, five spice, red and green curry paste, garlic, balsamic, seseame seed oil, fresh herbs, miso, flavor! I do drink coffee, I use Splenda a lot, and sometimes I bank my 75 naughty calories for a few days and splurge on something really naughty like my mom's poppy seed bread, or something decadent when I'm out to eat with hubby. I eat my junk food out of the house, with a witness...which I know is weird, but helps me stay accountable. An almost daily staple in my diet is homemade veggie soup: -

Two years out & yep I do. Probably more I want to lie down versus nausea now often coupled with my restriction kicking in. It can happen when I go out to eat & eat a little too quickly or if I’m not fully hydrated. Sometimes it’s when what I’m eating isn’t sitting well. Had lunch with a fellow sleever this week & after lunch we both groaned & said I need to lie down. Quite funny actually. We both had an all day keto breakfast. I had some bacon for the first time in ages & I think it set me off. She said the last bite did her in. -
amf1025, Well, he had the lap band for 13 years. He did lose 100#. But his starting weight at the time was 515#s. The Surgeon said he wasn't strong enough for the RNY. Which wasn't true because at the time he was still driving log truck and long haul trucking. He was 50yo. So after the surgery, they kept having problems putting in the fill and finally ruptured the port. Back into a day surgery got that fixed. So in 2013 it malfunctioned and he couldn't hold anything down. The VA suggested that he see a Bariatric Surgeon which we did. they said he needed to have the band removed. And they would do the revision at that time to an RNY. When they got in there the band had eroded into his liver. They couldn't do the revision but removed his band and gallbladder (due to him having stones) they told him that in 3 months when he was healed they would do the RNY. He ended up getting abscesses and was deathly sick for 9 months and 3 months he doesn't even remember. So now he is healed up so we go back to the Surgeon, he tell us he won't do the WLS because he said, he was a "PROBLEM CHILD". But he did refer him to another surgeon in Portland Oregon. Now they would do his surgery when he lost 25#'s and got his A1C (he is diabetic) down to a 7 or 8. Which if he lost weight his blood sugars would go high and if his blood sugars were down he gained weight. He just couldn't get it done. So then we get the news that he has Cancer on his kidney. Which the VA didn't tell us for 3 years. Now he has to lose 150#'s before they can do anything about the kidney cancer. So then we get the money up and off to Mexico we went. On June 3, 2013 he has surgery and is supposed to get the RNY. When they got in there they found that his whole right side is solid scar tissue. They can't do the RNY so he gets the Sleeve. So here we are now he has lost 60#'s but just can't seem to get any more off. This could have all been avoided if the first surgeon would have done the RNY. When he was strong enough to go thru it. They gave him 4 years if they can't do anything about the Cancer. Maybe 2 good years but the last 2 would be HELL!!! It has been a year already. Now I just found the KETO diet so I'm going to try it. We are both going to do it. You can do it to lose or to maintain. I feel like if I can do it wth him it might make it a little easier on him. I feel almost desperate like time is running out for us. So this is how the Lap-Band has been for him. Plus we have heard that most Dr.'s don't do them hardly, but the do many revisions. Please think hard before making your mind up on which way to go. I had the same green light from my Doctor, and it worked out very well for me. I had to travel for a week and was very intimidated to attempt to have a liquid diet on the road with a busy schedule. Not that it is impossible, but taking clients out to dinner etc, wasn't practical either. I did make good food choices with lot's of Soups, protein bars, scrambled eggs, etc... I have not had much restriction from day one, so it is relatively easy for me to have normal foods. More important for me than what I CAN eat, is knowing and choosing the foods I should eat. That is where the battle is won and lost long term. Post op we are all excited to lose the weight and experience our new body. But if you fast forward 6 months, what changes? Fast forward again 2, 5, 10 years, what changes? I am still a food addict no matter how in the future I go, so I need to make good food choices right now and work with my surgery to re-learn how to eat appropriately. As far as a NUT, I think many are great, but I was not impressed with the one at my DR office. Any NUT who tells me to fill up on fake sugars and Jello, I think is off base. I personally don't believe overloading your system on fake sugars is wise, as it is usually just a matter of time before they go back to the real sugars, not to mention the toxins most of them cause in your body. (I do use stevia and Xylitol) Being a sugar addict, I know it works to lose weight in the short term, but likely not ideal to contribute to long-term success.) Currently, I am doing a keto diet which I like for a lot of reasons. My only advise is to keep up the great work in searching for answers, and continue to do more soul searching with your diet choices, as you get help from others including NUTs. Hope this helps. -

@Erin414: by tomorrow or the next day you'll be fine. Your body is basically in withdrawal from carbs. After about 72 hours of this, your body starts burning fat for fuel. Once that happens, you will lose the feeling of physical hunger, the headaches, and the crankiness. Low carb dieters refer to those first few days as the "keto-flu" this is because once your body has fully switched over to fat burning, you will be producing ketones. You might notice a faint fruity odor to your breath, (and/or urine). Once you get there, you'll feel fine. It's just the first few days that are awful. -

Since you are still healing you shouldn't "give up" on Protein. Adding a scoop on unflavored protein powder to 8 oz of 1% milk will give you 28 grams of protein. You can favor it with an almost endless choice sugar free syrups. I like to add a handful of ice and blend it. On the keto diet you can even add some heavy cream. You need just drink this just three times a day to get 90 grams of protein in around 600 calories. -

Have you been doing Keto or anything like that? Apparently that can temporarily push up your cholesterol too, but like your doctor said, I bet it's just from the rapid weight loss.

i just went to the mr. olympia convention and tried Quest for the first time. they have a new waffle flavored one that legit tastes like a waffle with maple syrup. altho sweet for me the taste is amaze. they also have a new snickerdoodle Protein cookie that's killer. they also now have protein chips, goldfish crackers and pasta! the chips and goldfish are amaze. have tried the Pasta yet but i'm excited. their ingredients are far superior to others so i'll keep trying their stuff. it really fits my keto lifestyle.

Gluten's a hard one to give up - I have a niece that's celiac and hang with the special needs mom crowd - loads of special diets. Consider digestive enzymes? Post-op I had massive problems with dairy and fat my sister/accupuncturist said it was gall bladder. More like yelled, "Gall bladder!" into the phone. You can also just eliminate wheat - there's really no reason to be eating it as a new post-op. I did recently add some low carb tortillas in occasionally which do have wheat. But most keto recipes don't use grains; neither does paleo. And I've recently started looking at Thin Healthy Mama baking blend as a no wheat way to work a little fiber in. And seriously consider the actual test for celiac. Avoiding gluten contaminated food is a whole other level. Maybe two. We have yet to explain to my MIL that "gravy" does in fact contain flour (and therefore gluten) and doesn't spring fully formed from the tail end of a turkey.. [emoji16] As for me, I'm preparing for a hysterectomy next week - apparently I have a few giant troublemaker fibroids jacking up my uterus. The surgeon referred to it as "ornery". [emoji848][emoji19]After needed a blood transfusion last month, I decided I agreed. So after I heal up from that, I'm hopefully just down to the PTTD and a few other things. The story of failing and getting back on track

I feel like I need to share my experience with others, as I wish someone would have shared the same with me years ago. My weight loss started over 20 years ago, never stopped since, culminating with a gastric sleeve in 2017 (SW 360, CW 250, GW<200). After the WLS I've lost about 70 lbs and hit the plateau which lasted a few months. I tried breaking it with intensive gym, calories counting, but no real impact. As a result, I've lost motivation, and over the next 2 years gained about 30 lb back (late night snacks, sugary treats), which was a huge frustration. Having a sleeve - the best WL tool one may ever have - I felt like being a "regain" statistics, not an individual with life and willpower. I still had my "pouch" restriction, but after 30-40 minutes after having a meal I was ready to eat again. It lasted till last November, when I hit 290 lbs. The frustration turned into anger. I spent days to research diets and practices. As a result, I'm back on track, losing rapidly about 3-4 lbs a week, full of energy. Here are my 3 key pillars, which brought me back: 1. Low carb diet. After researching multiple trendy diets, KETO seemed to be the most promising one. But I didn't like the idea to consume lots of fats, and avoid vegetables. I'm an old-fashioned guy. So I adjusted the KETO idea by adding a decent daily portion of green veggies (zucchinis, asparagus, green pepper, kale - those which have nearly no sugars, but lots of fibers), and limited my fats to avocados, brazil nuts, eggs and fatty fish (salmon) - no huge amounts of bacon, butter, cheese and oils. For protein those above also provided enough, plus I have some lean pork, beef or chicken. That type of diet keeps my in permanent ketosis, while I still have a decent amount of fibers and healthy protein. My nutrients are around 50-60% of fats, 25-30% of proteins and 10-15% of carbs. 2. Intermittent fasting (IF), 18:6. It means my eating "window" is 1pm - 7pm, during which I have 3 meals. Personally I believe that low carbs diet and IF are made for each other. Being in ketosis I feel no hunger at all, as my insulin is very low. That makes IF a simple task. Also once a week I do a 42 hours fast by skipping meals on Sundays - right before my weight check on Monday morning! ). IF is also a solution to plateaus. I adjust the fasting time to 12:12 for a few days and do a long fast after (48+ hours) to reset. 3. CICO (calories in, calories out) is the 3rd pillar. Keeping everything written down is not just a good habit, but also makes me feel I control the process better. My daily intake is around 1,100-1,300 calories, which creates a huge weekly calories deficit for weight loss. One may consider it's a bit too low, and I would rather agree. I'll certainly increase my calories after hitting my goal. A few more tips from my experience: - After 40+ gym can't be the only solution. Keeping yourself active (especially with this pandemic) is important for general health, but unless I'm a professional athlete, 1-1.5 hour walk every day (outside or a treadmill) is good enough. - Staying hydrated is a must, healthy weight loss won't work without it. Tracking water was always a pain for me, I was forgetting to do that. Now I have 6 magnets next to my water cooler. Each time I refill my bottle, I move one magnet to the other side, which helps me to see how many refills left. No fuss with writing down, takes a fraction of a second to move the magnet - while keeps me fully informed. Helps a lot! - Supplements!!! Lots of them! Since I'm restricted and have rather a distorted diet, I need to fill the gap of minerals and nutrients. Multivitamins, husk fiber, omega-3, collagen, cumin, ox bile, Vitamin D, electrolytes etc. It's 18 pills per day, in 2 batches! My latest blood work returned perfect results - no deficiencies, and the lowest sugar level I ever had in my life. As a conclusion - no hunger, no frustration, no cravings, energetic, clear mind, active, positive - and still losing weight! I even think that it would be very doable without my WLS, but in fact a restricted stomach makes everything much easier. So much easier, then it feels sometimes I'm actually cheating in this weight-loss game! I do hope someone will find it helpful. I wish I knew that years ago, but better late than never. -

My family and 3 coworkers know. I don’t plan on telling everyone my business, but if asked, I will say I was doing keto LOL since they knew I did that before. My 6 & 9 year old don’t know, I just told them mommy was sick from her tummy but that’s it. They haven’t even noticed anything different since I still cook for them. My hubby is my #1 supporter , he has been so helpful in this process. -

That chicken info sounds good. When you leave the skin off it cuts the fat down at least by half. Ok, so nutritional goals are tough, since everyone does things a bit differently. A lot of it ends up being oersonal opinion. Your protein goal is the same as mine. Carbs.. it depends on whether you want to be in ketosis. If you don't know what that means, google ketogenic diet. Personally I don't want to go keto, so I keep my carbs above 50 (usually 60-70). Anything over 100 isn't as good for weight loss. Fat.. mine is moderately high. I eat 2 servings of full fat dairy and a serving of nuts, and whatever fat that comes in the meat. A teaspoon of olive oil on spinach, and a bit of butter to cook my egg. Altogether I'm getting 1200-1300 calories a day.
