Vegetarian saying no to keto diet

I went to one bariatric surgeon who said I'd have to go on the keto diet after surgery. I'm a vegetarian, and I have no desire to go on a diet that doesn't allow beans, complex carb grains, and minimally sweetened yogurt (the kind recommended by bariatric surgeons). If I tell another surgeon that I will not go on a keto diet after surgery, are they likely to deny my surgery? -
I’m 4 days out from gastric sleeve and hiatal hernia repair as of today. Woke up a little dehydrated this morning and not feeling great. Yesterday was the first day I missed my water goal. (yes I had other things that contribute to my water, but I’ve been pretty good about getting 64 oz plus those other liquids) I have had super low energy today - sleeping way more than normal. I’m working hard to get my water in but no matter how much I drink my mouth seems dry - and this stubborn headache won’t go away. Today has thrown me for quite a loop because I expected to feel better day 4 than I did day 2 and that is not the case. The day after surgery I was walking around the ward and feeling relatively good - considering the surgery. I was up and around and went for a short walk on day 2. Day 3 I didn’t do as much but I did get time in on the recumbent bike - energy level was low, so I thought I could take it easier on the bike and still hit my movement goal. I have been getting my water in ok today - despite the nausea when I got up earlier, had a frozen juice popsicle and that went down ok. Had some protein soup (broth only with protein powder) - powder was not the best with that broth, but I got it down. I’m struggling with the shakes today (which I usually have no issues with - but today they aren’t appealing). I struggle with artificial sweeteners - they upset my stomach and can trigger headaches, so I’m limited in some of the options I have during my liquid phase. The yogurts suggested are of course the ones with artificial sweetener which makes them not ideal on a day I’m already not feeling well. Which eliminates yogurt based smoothies that are suggested in place of a store bought shake. Can anyone tell me if you experienced anything like this your first week? I’m still on full liquids, transition to purées Wednesday. Maybe it’s the low calories kicking my butt energy wise? I’m struggling to even hit 800 calories, my goals are 800-1200 … I’m getting about 770-780 most days. I don’t think it’s a Keto flue because I’m allowed fruit juice and I use that for popsicles. I haven’t had caffeine in months so I don’t think it’s withdraw from that either. I’ll call my nutritionist Monday if I’m still not feeling well, but since it’s the weekend I thought I would ask if others experienced anything similar and how you got through. Any suggestions or advice appreciate. Thanks in advance.

I did keto a while back and had the keto flu for about a week. The bariatric diet and keto are actually the same except bariatric diet wants your fats 50 or less per day and keto wants HEALTHY fats higher. I did the bariatric diet for 2 1/2 months and my body hated it. I would stall over and over. I decided to switch to keto again and I haven't had a stall in the month I've been doing it and have steadily lost. No keto flu this time, tho. But it's normal and goes away. I keep my calories between 1000-1150 per day (I work out and need the extras so my body doesn't think it's starving and hold on to everything). I keep my carbs between 25-35 per day. My protein stays around 75-85 per day. My fats are usually around 70-80. And I'm completely sugarfree or very low sugar (such as certain fruits or veggies). I work out for 45 minutes per day, and I generally take in around 75-90oz of fluids (depending on the type of workout I did that day). -
Yes, likely ketosis, and basically means that you aren't eating your vegetables. It will improve as your diet improves and gains more variety. I never had any particular problem with it as I always maintained at least an homage to a varied balanced diet (no keto/Atkins stuff,) and let the calorie restriction do its job.

I'm part of a group of people who are mostly several years out of surgery. Some have tried WW. Some of them really like it and have been successful with it, but for others, it's not their "jam" and they gave up. I guess all you can do is try it and see if it works for you. others have tried things like Keto, intermittent fasting, or going back to logging and eating protein first, etc (in other words, the basics). Whatever works! BTW - 800 kcal a day being as far out as you aren't isn't really sustainable. Start logging to find out what your calorie range is (i.e., about how many calories does it take to keep your weight where it is. May take a month or so of logging to figure this out). Then, if you want to lose, cut back from there. Maybe 100 calories at a time. For example, if it takes 1600 kcal a day to maintain your weight, try cutting back to 1500. If after a couple of weeks nothing's happening, cut back to 1400. Rinse and repeat.

I did keto as my pre surgery diet (2.5 weeks) but had no keto flu symptoms or withdrawal symptoms of headaches, etc. I was a little surprised though was already low caffeine so that helped a lot. At about 5 weeks post surgery I started having the ketosis body odour issues, low energy & brain fog. I lost about 5kg pre surgery (11lbs). I didn’t continue the keto eating plan after surgery because I had read some articles saying it wasn’t best as a long term way of eating & also my dietician advised it was a good way to kick start your loss but shouldn’t be continued. I was glad because I didn’t like the high fat aspect of keto & it never sat well with me. She & I both agreed on following a balanced diet making slight adjustments as best suited me, my body & needs. I am lowish carbs (focus on low processed multi & whole grains only) but & am lowish fats. I don’t track macros so I couldn’t tell you exactly how much my lowish is. I eat two serves of carbs a day vs the recommended 4 serves for someone my age. This does not include the carbs in vegetables, etc. This is what works for me. You may need something totally different.

Dietitians need to ask enough questions to understand where you ARE, both with your ability to prepare your own food and your overall understanding of nutrition. It sounds like you and your dietitian are not on the same page and she is assuming you understand things they are not explaining well. There are a lot of ways to reach 60g of protein in a day that will be too high in fat, calories, and carbs to result in weight loss. Sometimes I feel like the heavy, heavy emphasis on protein does us a disservice, especially when there are so many high-protein "convenience foods" that are high in fat (and calories) to cater to Keto dieters (hello, Quest cookies! 230 calories! that's not a snack, that's a meal). Protein is a big component but in the absence of other, concrete advice about WHAT to actually eat, if you don't have a huge knowledge base of nutrition, it's easy to get lost.

Keto flu is temporary, it can last anywhere from 3 days to a week. -

So of course every surgeon is different. For me they did not want us to go into that keto flu. So we were told to avoid those protein shakes with no carbs. instead they recommended a certain one which i forget how many carbs they have in it but had a decent amount (not 50 of course) also to not avoid caffine as that would make the diet even harder. But yea it sucks. Gotta get use to it. After surgery your carbs will need to be a bear minimum. Currently at 4 months post op according to my guidelines max i can have is 30 and its no longer an issue. -
i do not have a surgery date yet, but have been trending down my carb count to prepare for my 3 week low carb/keto diet (50 total carbs a day). Figure it will help me loose more weight before surgery and be more psychologically comfortable and ready for the whole process. i have finally got myself mostly down under 50 carbs a day (6/7 of the last days under 51) and am starting to feel the “keto flu”. I have had a lot of dreaming at night, which is unusual.. headaches the last few days and today general body aches. no fever or cough etc. anyone else experienced this with cutting carbs?? how long did this last?? did the keto actually help loose more weight ? thank you for sharing!

I also start my pre-op diet on the 5th but my 2 weeks are split. The 1st week I can have 1 meal (high protein, low carb ) per day but the second week is only liquids. I also have to keep my calories under 800 per day - yuck. You sound very much like my twin. I have 4 different kinds of premier shakes,5 yummy sounding keto shakes, several different types of broth and canned soups that I can strain, pudding, jello and I'll buy yogurt when it gets closer. I also have a clever fox journal that has spots for pictures and measurements to keep me motivated. I'm as prepared as much as I think I can be. Thinking and preparing keeps me busy and makes the time pass faster. I get more and more nervous the closer it gets, but excited too. Can't wait to have a new me -

I have BCBS of Illinois and they covered everything but $1500, and my secondary covered $1200 of that. So I only had $300 out of pocket. They approved my surgery within 48 hours of my surgeon's office submitting everything. From my 1st appt to my surgery date was 2 1/2 months. BCBS only required 1 pre op and 1 post op nutritionist appt, 1 psych eval, approval letter from my neurologist (because I have MS), approval letter from my PCP, having tried at least 2 methods of weight loss in the past (my PCP knew about me doing keto and also low/no calorie and put that in the approval letter). So it was a fast and painless process. My surgeon's office wanted the blood work and EKG before surgery. BCBS approved every test with no issues. -
Hello everyone, I am located in the Netherlands and will be having my Gastric Sleeve surgery on October 17th in Turkey at Grand Medical. I'm choosing to go to Turkey because I am below the 40 BMI required for insurance coverage in the Netherlands. Due to this reason, I must pay out of pocket and the medical tourism world is quite high quality in Turkey- same procedures- a quarter of the cost. My costs are below 3000 euros including my 5 days stay at the hospital and my transport to and from the airport- flights are not included- but are fairly affordable if flying from Europe. Their track record is phenomenal for the sleeve and their patient experience passes with flying colors. I'm choosing to have this surgery as a lower BMI patient due to my family history of obesity over 40 and the fact that I have tried every diet, lifestyle change, even personal training and nothing has worked!!! I have gained muscle and stalled after 5 kg.. The one time i lost weight on keto, I gained it right back within 1.5 years. I'm looking forward to this new life and the new options it will afford me, not to mention having my confidence back. If anyone is located in Europe- (western/Northern and UK) is a huge plus and has had the surgery or is having it soon, tell me you experiences and lets keep in touch! I'd love to be able to share information about what shakes youre using, vitamins, foods youve found etc as many of the items mentioned by our U.S based members arent available to us. I'm also interested in hearing if anyone else has had their surgery in Turkey as I know its quite a popular destination for weight loss surgeries and plastic surgeries.

I think I'm trying to deal with my anxiety by planning as much as possible. Thanks to loli_lotus I now have several really yummy sounding keto shakes as well I now probably have way more than I need for this liquid phase, but I can't predict how I'll feel after surgery so its hard to stop collecting everything that may or may not work. If only I was one of those people who could turn to exercise to deal with anxiety, but no, I still am struggling to even get into a routine. -

Thinning it down might help make it so I can eat it post-op since they aren't as worried about the carbs after. So I will definitely try that. I love keto chow, or at least I did when I was doing the keto diet a few years back. I only tried the shakes though. I might have to look into those soups, ty! -

I just bought some soup mixes from Keto Chow, haven't tried them though. They're high protein and low carb and despite the name, the dry mix is low fat as well. -

I have MS and had to have my neurologist sign off on the surgery, which he happily did. My PCP was very supportive because she knew I tried different things, including keto. She knew my health issues and was fantastic and proactive. If your doctor is really dragging things out for you and causing all kinds of problems, I would look for another doctor. Is your neuro ok with the surgery? How long will it take for your insurance to approve your MRI? Will your neuro insist on a MRI in order to send over a note approving you for the surgery? Your PCP can't insist your neuro do testing you may not need. -

I don't think you should be at all concerned with doctor shopping - we look at different cars/dealerships, different realtors when we buy a home. A doctor should be no different. But it looks like you have made your way through and yay for getting a revision! I had the Lapband in 2011. I never really felt restriction after my pouch healed (2 weeks or so) and I lost 60 lbs. I've kept it off but every time I try to lose more weight I end up gaining it right back. I've gone vegan for 2 years, then went keto and promptly had to have my gallbladder removed last summer - doc said it was directly related to keto. I've lost 40 lbs on my own and gained it right back. So in July I decided that since my insurance now covers bariatric I'd see what could be done. Boy have things moved fast. I went to my PCP (also a NP and I love her) and she referred me to a bariatric surgeon. I had my first consult with him on July 12th and he scheduled me for all the tests. I got them done in record time, sometimes two doctor appointments a day, and got done last week. Had my 30 day follow up today and although they're just submitting to insurance now, he's confident they're going to approve so I have my surgery date for October 24th. Here's to revision and another chance! -

As of today, I am exactly 3 1/2 months post sleeve surgery and have lost 61 pounds!!!! I can't believe it!!! I still feel like I'm fighting for every pound, but I also knew PCOS would do that to me. Still, I'm so so happy that I hit that weight. I know it's going to get tougher the more time that goes by, but the fact that I'm losing and not putting the weight back on is huge!!!! I'm so excited. My next goal is to hit 320 (that will officially put me at a lower weight than I was with keto - even though I lost 100 pounds then, and it'll only be 67 pounds now, because I went into the surgery a lower weight than I was at when I started keto). After that, my next goal is to hit 299 and be under 300 for the first time since 2005. -

I start on sept 5th I have 1 week where I can have 1 small keto like meal and the rest of the day only liquids. Then the second week is only liquids. -

I saw somewhere on this site a list of soup/broth but I can't remeber where because I've looked at soo many threads. Thats so nice of your co worker and so supportive! My husband told me he for sure was not going on the liquid diet with me. I told him he couldn't or he would die because he's so skinny. He went on the keto diet with me last year to be supportive but he couldn't keep going so I think he's more afraid of diets now. He's never been over weight, so he really doesn't have any experience, but I loved the support. It really does make a difference. -

Super proud of my lunch earlier today. 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, spinach and mushrooms. 267 calories, 22g protein, 5 net carbs. Dinner on the other hand? Sigh, ended up eating only half. Sesame soy sauce tofu with kimchi, zucchini, and scallions with gochujang (the carbs in this are insane!) for 192 calories, 9g protein and 8net carbs. I did end up looking up several keto gochujang recipes so I’ll probably make and use one of those instead.
