  1. I am currently in the postop purée phase, and my doc said WENDYS chili is ok. So tonight was a busy night and I bought a small chili and it puréed really nice and tasted great. I could only eat a little less than a quarter cup but it was a welcome change from tuna, eggs and yogurt. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. I am having the hardest time. I don't know what to eat and I do feel hunger. I eat yogurt with genpro for breakfast. Even though I could have scrambled eggs now. Then last night after broth for lunch. I had refrained beans. I wanted more but I was scared. I think I had about 1/3 of a cup. Anyway. I'm struggling and don't feel like I'm losing. I am so scared I did this for nothing. I love real food. So the sf puddings are wearing on me. I don't like sweet as much as not. Help. What are you guys eating two weeks post op. How much. How often. Thanks.

    Finding your full

The wiring between your stomach and brain is all jacked up right now. This is why measuring your food at this stage is so very, very important. It will vary between individuals, but go into with the mindset that your stomach doesn't know how to tell you it's full yet. In time that will return. Also keep in mind that liquids tend to pass through the system quickly. Unless you are drinking too fast it's not often you'll ever get a full sensation. Same thing for foods like yogurt. If it can become a liquid at room temperature then it you can basically treat it like a liquid. Just remember - measure, measure, measure!

How many fills did it take?

Actually, what's meant by proteins once you are on solid foods is SOLID proteins. For instance, Greek yogurt is a good snack between meals; however, during mealtime you should focus on solid proteins as those will keep you fuller longer (per my nutritionist). Some people think having a protein drink can replace having a meal. I know some people feel "tight" in the a.m. and prefer this as their morning "meal". I think if that works for them, it's great. You wouldn't want to do that for every meal thought. To really stay fuller longer, eggs, cheese, etc will keep you fuller and satiated longer. Since you mention being vegetarian (mostly), have you tried quinoa? It is packed with nutrients and protein. I have a recipe that my family loves made with vegetable broth, black beans, cilantro, etc. Just another thought....

    I've been hiding...now I'm back needing support

Hi MamaJava, I haven't been banded very long (2 months) so I know I can't give you more helpful advise than someone who has been banded longer. I just want to say I think you should relax. Sit down and think about what you are eating. Be honest with yourself and keep a journal of everything you eat and record your exercise. If you make sure your calories, sugar, and carbs are low I don't see how you can't lose. I know you say you are not eating breads and Pasta but carbs are in a lot of other things as well and in high numbers. I keep my food and exercise journal on my computer. Anytime I pick something up to eat I go straight to my computer and type it in along with the calories, fat, carbs, sugar, and Protein it provides. If you just have to have ice cream try low fat yogurt. I eat the low fat yogurt or no sugar added ice cream but I only eat it maybe two to three times a month. I don't eat it everyday. You could also try sugar free/fat free pudding made with 1/2% milk. I love that, I sometimes mix bananas in it. Other than that just make sure you are doing everything you possibly can to lose the weight. I know I want to lose this weight so bad and I will not sabotage my success by eating things I know I shouldn't eat.
  6. I was told to have no more than 15 g carbs daily, but I actually go higher than that. I try to stick with eggs, cheese, yogurt, chicken, fish, etc. It's actually pretty easy. Just do a little research and see what you come up with.
  7. So i've read that many keep carbs under 30gr. How do you do that? You are just eating non-diary Protein?!! I don't eat any breads (well hardly), and get a great deal of protein from yogurt, cottage cheese, Protein shakes, low fat cheese, milk. The doctor is approcing that, but in doingso I am hitting 60-80 gr of carbs a day. For example, i ate today a small non fat Chiobani Yogurt that has 20 gr of carbs, 14 gr protein. That means than in order to keep carbs low, I'll have to eat ham, tuna, fish, beef, chicken, with nothing added to hit my carb limit today... Need some guidance here...
  8. Hi everyone. Newbie to this site. This Tuesday will mark the two week mark from the date of my gastric sleeve operation. Last night I ate Soup and a yogurt drink (I was on Clear liquids for 48 hours and then on full liquids until week 4). I think I "drank" my dinner too fast and maybe "ate" too much because I was in so much pain afterwards! Today I have been slowing everything down, evaluating with each sip if I am full or not. Like most people, I am not used to taking my time while eating. This is a whole new world. I had tomato soup and then a cup of Morrocan mint tea for lunch and had no problems at all. Has anyone else made any "newbie" mistakes- eating too fast, trying a food you couldn't handle too soon even if your doctor okayed it? Last night was rough. Mostly I am annoyed because it was Saturday night and I like to watch movies with my husband and son during this time, but instead I was in the bedroom and in and out of the bathroom, having....issues. Ugh.

    Considering the Lap Band

Right now I am on day 3 of my "mushy" phase of the diet. I can eat scrambled eggs, yogurt, Beans, tuna & chicken (mushed) with some fat free mayo, I can have some mashed cauliflower fat free ricotta. That's all I can think of off my list right now lol.

    What to eat?

What does your program recommend? My regimen was: 2 weeks clears (I did 17 days) 2 weeks of full liquids (my surgeon let me just do one week) 2 weeks of mushies 2 weeks of soft solids then slowly progress to regular solid food I followed a few different variations of surgeon's post-op diet. This one is from Dr. Aceves, and it gave me some ideas to break up the monotony of the "regular" stuff on the full liquid and mushy stage. POST-OP DIET: Here are a few ideas concerning the post op diet Day 1 thru 5 ( Clear Liquids Only ) fruit juice ( apple, grape, cranberry ) Propel broth Jello-O Water Tea Protein Water by Kellogg’s Water popsicles Clear Protein drinks only ( example Isopure, unjury ) Day 6-10 ( thin liquids ) All of the above and: Natural Vegetable Juices ( example Carrot, V-8 juice ) Protein drinks mixed with water ( example Matrix ) whey nectar Protein Mix Day 11 thru 20 ( full liquids ) Cream Soups Yogurt Jello-O Boiled pureed fruit ( example apple, pear) applesauce Watermelon, papaya or melon in small pieces Low fat milk 1 or 2% Water, Propel, tea Soy beverages sugar free pudding Protein shakes and protein powders mixed with milk Day 21 thru 30 ( soft food ) Soft food should be the consistency of a thick liquid ( no chunks or solid material ) and it should be chewed very well before swallowing until it is a liquid consistency ) Tofu Low fat cottage cheese Cereal oatmeal Precooked pureed rice Low fat Yogurt Yogurt mixed with fruit very well blended Cream soups eggs Boiled pureed fruit ( example pear, apple ) Watermelon, papaya or melon in small pieces Boiled pureed vegetables Beans Day 31st and beyond ( solid food ) Fish, Chiken meat Turkey Vegetables Fruit A diet consisting of 800 calories and 70 grams of protein should be your goal. There is a book called " Weight loss Surgery for Dummies" Authors: Kurian, Thompson and Davidson You might find it helpful. I contains several recipes and ideas on what to eat after surgery Grilled Marinated Tuna with Lime Herbed Beef Patties Turkey Meatballs Seafood salad chicken Salad A diet consisting of 600-800 calories and about 70 grams of protein should be the goal Protein will not only help you heal and build muscle mass but acts as a natural appetite suppressant. Concerning protein supplements here are a few ideas: Isopure protein drinks - 40 grams of protein per bottle. Isopure you mix with water - 50 grams of protein. You can find them at GNC. "Protein Water" by Kellogg’s - 5 grams of protein per drink. You can find it at WallMart Unjuryclear protein drinks - UNJURY Medical Quality Whey Protein Isolate. Great Tasting Whey Protein Supplements for Everyday Health! High Protein and High Quality. Not so good tasting. New Whey Nectar Protein mixis very good but it is kind of expensive. Protein shakes and mixes are very good tasking. You will need to wait until they are allowed in you food stage. Advocare high protein drinks called “Meal Replacement shakes “have Vitamins added to them andare a great optiontoo FOLLOWING THE POST OP DIET IS VERY IMPORTANT REMEMBERWE ARE TRYING TO PROTECT THE STAPLE LINE THE SCAR TISSUE IS STILL FORMING AROUND IT DO NOT OVERFILL YOUR STOMACH AND DO NOT JUMP ANY FOOD STAGES

    Tips please on starting purees

Starting purees is great! After the liquid diet, it's nice to be able to eat something resembling real food. You should mix protein powder into purees to make sure you meet your protein goal. My advice for that is to use flavored protein powder for sweet foods and unflavored protein powder for savory foods. Here's what I ate in the pureed stage: Fat-free, no sugar added Greek yogurt (vanilla yogurt + birthday cake protein powder; vanilla yogurt + chocolate protein powder + powdered peanut butter; strawberry yogurt + strawberry protein powder, etc.) Fat-free, sugar-free pudding (chocolate pudding + chocolate protein powder + powdered peanut butter; vanilla pudding + strawberry protein powder, etc.) Unsweetened applesauce + cinnamon roll protein powder Protein oatmeal + cinnamon roll protein powder Pureed refried beans + unflavored protein powder, topped with enchilada sauce + Laughing Cow cheese Pureed black bean soup + unflavored protein powder Mashed cauliflower + unflavored protein powder, topped with gravy
  12. Seems like every other time i have a "meal" my stomach hurts when i take a small bite or a few seconds after the bite. Tomorrow i will be two weeks out and can start pureed foods. So I'm on yogurt blended cottage cheese, Soup, Water.. you get it. Did it take anyone else a while before they stopped hurting during meals. I'm starting to think I'm never going to be able to eat without being in discomfort.

How Do You Keep Low Carbs?!

I eat the Stoneyfield Plain Greek Yogurt and add splenda and vanilla extract for flavor. You can subtract the fiber and the sugar alcohols from the carb count. I manage to keep mine between 20-40 a day most days. I eat alot of spicy pork rinds for the crunch factor! They are my chips and they are awesome with just about everything (except yogurt - lol) I manage to get about 80-100 grams of Protein a day. I do add some unflavored Protein Powder to my coffee and sometimes to my Propel Zero Water to bump up my intake. If you aren't on My Fitness Pal think about joining it and getting friends because you can view their food diaries each day and get ideas of the different kinds of foods they eat that are low in carb and get an idea of how others are doing it.

How Do You Keep Low Carbs?!

The yogurt you ate must have been a fruit flavor. The plain Chobani yogurt has much less than 20 carbs. If you add a little bit of Crystal Light powder to it it's really good!

    Almost A Year....

I was 5'7 and 250 on my surgery date. I am now 140 today. I don't want to lose any more weight. It will be a year June 30th. And yes it is very frustrating in the beginning but trust me you will continue to lose and reach ur goal! I always focused on my water and protein! My favorite snacks are peanuts, string cheese and yogurt. I still can't eat very much at a time so I focus on eating several times a day. I have had a breast lift and implants and arm lift. I plan to have a lower body lift in September. I had a lot of excess skin! Sorry if I forgot something....lol just ask!

    Calling all recipies

Shrimp with cocktail sauce; low cal onion dip (mix 16 oz yogurt with a packet of Lipton's Onion Soup Mix) and serve with celery and carrot sticks for those wanting healthy and chips for others; cheese and crackers. All are no cook and easy appetizers. Main courses for all those people should be cassarole type. Boil a pound of macaroni and mix it with a jar of tomato sauce. Brown up a pound of chop meat. Put half the macaroni in a large pan (get the toss away aluminum ones), layer the macaroni with 16 oz ricotta cheese, sprinkle sauce over it, layer on the chop meat and top that with sauce, layer on 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese and add sauce on top of that. Put the other half of the macaroni on top and top with 8 oz mozzarella cheese. It's 2 jars of sauce, one pound of chop meat, one pound of mozzarella cheese, 16 oz ricotta cheese and one pound of macaroni... tastes like lasagna and it gets raves.

1 week post op and starving

My doctor requires 48 hours clear liquid and then a full-liquid diet until our two-week follow-up. As long as everything is OK, we are allowed to do the soft/pureed food for the next 2 weeks. I was told we could have cream Soup, smooth yogurt, puddings, applesauce w/out chunks, and whipped cottage cheese during the liquid stage. Of course, this is in addition to any low-calorie non-carbonated beverages and Protein shakes. I pureed a can of vegetarin chili 'til it was liquid today for lunch. I hope I didn't push it too far. I just couldn't stand the darn cream Soups anymore. There were no chunks in the chili so I hope I didn't damage anything by cheating a bit. Anyone have any creative ideas for the liquid stage?
  18. I am 7 days post op and I've been doing great with my diet of liquids but I'm curious what full feels like. I have yet to feel hunger so I am eating because I need to. I haven't eaten until I feel pain or discomfort so I'm starting to get concerned I'm not noticing it. What did full feel like to you this early on? I eat (drink rather) my broths and such very slowly and eat my Greek yogurt very slowly but I don't feel anything.
  19. Totally not a troll... In fact, why would someone lie about what something like that?? The day I left the hospital I was on Full Liquids (clear only in hosp.) Day 8 I went to soft foods. I just started off with the softest things like yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. Then worked my way up to ground meats. I have not once had a bad reaction to anything. I totally agree with @sillykitty, everyone's healing process is different. What works for me may not work for you. Doesn't mean our surgeons don't know what they're doing. My surgeon has a very high success rate so I doubt he'd tell me to do anything that would negatively effect me.
  20. The protein shakes do get old the first week, but they do help. Each doctor is different in their post-op instructions so I'm not sure how long you have to be on liquids. I know when I started with soft foods, cottage cheese and high-protein yogurt helped me get my protein. Check the protein shake cook book at bariatricfoodie.com, too. All the best to you!
  21. I am sure if I did the math -my food bill dropped. I was a huge fast food, sandwich, deli, and pizza shop guy pre-band. Once I moved over to regular food post band my actual grocery store bill went up but my total food bill dropped. You will be shocked at how many meals one package of ground beef becomes. However, I did spend more money on "better" things within the store also. Meaning the can keep the 3 for a $1 dollar nasty yogurt give me the $2.00 per yogurt good stuff. At the end of the day what you might end up in saving in total food is going to have to go towards the purchase of new pants. So don't plan for any savings!!!
  22. Brushing your teeth will curb the cravings also. Who wants to dirty their clean teeth. I haven't had ice cream since February and don't really miss it. A cup of fat free yogurt satisfies me just as much. I do have pudding cups and baked chips (not together) every couple of days.
  23. I didn't progress through any of my food stages early. Even though I "felt" fine, who knows what was really going on on the inside. It wasn't worth risking my healing or causing a leak just so I could chew food one day sooner, you know? I actually never once pureed anything during my pureed phase. I drank my Protein shakes, had strained cream soups a LOT, and used the recipes on Shelly's page (mostly the baked ricotta) here: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html I did a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt. And once I was allowed soft foods, a lot of scrambled eggs and soft cheeses.
  24. Hey everyone I was sleeved on the 3rd. Today is day 13....its so funny how we count the days. I'm able to drink 2 shakes a day, 24 oz of water, 4 oz of cream of wheat, yogurt with a mashed banana was yesterday attempt and it gave me life. I pureed some beef stew with carrots and had only 3 spoons and was done. I can sleep on my stomach. However last night and right now I have aches all through my legs and lower back. Feel weak to walk.

    Antibiotics and Nutrition

There are a couple of nutrition related areas to be aware of regarding antibiotics. Some antibiotics will interact with certain minerals. These minerals include magnesium and aluminum, which are found in anti-acid medications. Other minerals that can interact with some antibiotics include iron, calcium and zinc. Check your supplements to see if these are included. Some ready to drink protein shakes can be fortified with these minerals. Calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and aluminum will interact with some antibiotics and make them less effective. You will need to take these minerals several hours apart from the antibiotic. Something else to be aware of is that antibiotics kill bacteria, both the good ones and the bad ones. Therefore, do not take an antibiotic at the same time you take something with probiotics in it like yogurt, kefir or a probiotic supplement. Your antibiotic can kill some of the good bacteria and not have enough left to kill all the bad bacteria. Take the time to read the insert that comes with your antibiotic. If you need further help, consult with your medical team, including your pharmacist. Taking your antibiotic correctly will allow your body to have the best chance to get rid of a bacterial infection.
