    Tomorrow is surgery day!!

My surgery took 6 hours. Lots of complications with the hernias. I ended up with a collapsed lung and surgical emphysema (crackling skin chest neck face). Had a chest tube to allow space for my lung to reinflate, it worked. Had a rough first few days. Made it work. Lots of swelling and almost a week post op. One day at a time. It is improving. Tylenol is my friend.

VSG is coming up real soon!

Thank you for the response, Vsho. Thinking about the potential complications has been the main reason why I’ve stayed strict on this diet. Also because I refuse to let food control me. Thanks, again!

VSG is coming up real soon!

Think about the potential complications of not adhering to the diet. That helped me a lot. And remember that after surgery you won't be hungry! You'll wonder why it was even hard to do the pre OP diet.

    I’m so confused

I think most of us go through that back & forth stage before surgery. I also thought I should just try to lose weight again on my own, but then, I'd been doing it for over 30 years, just to gain it all back again. What made me think I was going to be successful THIS time? I finally admitted to myself that I was never going to be able to do it on my own - I needed the tool. btw - lots of people never have complications from the surgery, and for those who do, most are minor. I wouldn't let that stop me.

    I’m so confused

this seems to be a common experience. Use the search bar at the top of the page and you will see how many people have pre surgery anxiety. Here are a few on this topic. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/423607-getting-cold-feet/?tab=comments#comment-4754212 https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/423992-what-you-had-no-surgery-complications/
  8. I am so confused. I am scheduled to get sleeve surgery on May 30th and I am scared. I have knee and ankle pain that is probably due to me being overweight my entire life but other than that my health is pretty good. I am 53 years old 5’3” and my current weight is 233. My brain is racing back and forth between try one more time to do it without surgery and the risks that come with it, and I have been trying and haven’t been under 200 lbs since my early 20’s. I’m so afraid I will feel regret or have complications after surgery that I don’t have now and am equally afraid that if I don’t do the surgery, I will have diabetes, high blood pressure, constant joint pain and all the other problems that obesity cause. I’ve always been so terrible at making decisions but this one is really hard. Did any of you struggle with this ?
  9. I asked my surgeon how many times she'd performed the surgery, how many complications her patients had had, if any, and what the success rate % of patients having the surgery was.
  10. Hi hoping someone where can help. I just had my final meeting with my doctor and scheduled my revision RNY to DS. 2 years ago my insurance denied my revision so I am 100% self pay. I got all my payment information today and the woman at the doctor's office told me she would need to "run the insurance info through" for the hospital just so they have the denial info? huh? the LAST thing I want is for my insurance company to have any info on this surgery. I majorly understand the risks of any complications in the hospital and being responsible for the costs personally since I am paying for the initial surgery. I understand that risk and am willing to take it. I also understand that if I go home a few days or weeks later sometype of complication happens, that I should be able to run that through insurance and have it be covered (different medical coding). So with all this being said the LAST thing I want is for the insurance company to have any inkling of this surgery Has anyone ever had this experience? I am very concerned now that she said that this morning and I cannot think of anything else...any insight would be appreciated.

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Honestly my relationship with my mother. It’s too complicated to get into here, but my sister and I have always had to hold onto each other in the absolute chaos that our nuclear family was. When I had cancer 10 years ago she came to me in tears begging me not to die and “leave her alone to deal with our crazy family”. No matter how much I change myself, I will never be able to change my mother and that’s a tough pill to swallow.

    A Lotta Brachioplasty Questions

So, my bariatric office gave me a referral to a plastic surgeon on Monday. This surgeon is about 2.5 hours away, though. Given my history with complications (with regular surgery and previous cosmetic surgery) it makes me really nervous to go to someone so far. They said he deals with bariatric skin removal all the time, which is a plus. But I am considering just going to the guy who did my breast reduction since he is very close by and did an excellent job. In the event there was some kind of complication, I don't know how I would get to the other guy being so far away! I'm going to set up a consult with my guy in July and schedule this surgery out for November-ish.

Six Month Post-Op Then and Now

Thanks everyone. I feel a lot better, physically. I look forward to my trainer sessions each week. Had my six-month appointment and they were thrilled with the results so far and said I don't need to change a thing I am doing and they are confident I can get off this 46lbs by the end of November, which is my goal. Now that the complications have resolved, I feel a lot better and less regretful. It's nice to be able to compare these photos since you don't always notice the change yourself without really seeing the befores and afters. I can't wait to get to my goal weight because buying clothes is a hassle! I have no clue what size I wear any given day and I am still gravitating towards the plus section, even though my tops aren't plus anymore and my pants are a borderline 12.
  14. I found my way back here after all these years. Banded in 2010, lost 135lbs and gained 70lbs back in the last 5 years. Sadly, complications are leading to band removal this week, This is major uncharted territory so I knew this was the place to come---where it all began. Looking at my profile of my successful, skinny body compared to where I am now makes me sad. I'm going to look around for band removal forums and for folks who have revision surgeries for support and advise. Anyone out there, let me know!!!

I'm in the same boat as you. My revision surgery is scheduled for 6-12-2019 pending insurance approval. Lost 50 lbs only to regain it all back due to complications of my lapband. Looking forward to my revision surgery.

    African American Sleevers

Hey hey. So as far as my surgery I have not had a single complication. I was sleeved in Aug 2018 and have lost a total of 90lbs. I have had no real hair loss that isn’t typical. In fact my hair has been healthier. I take my vitamins everyday (mostly). My skin has snapped back but that can also be due to the fact that I am 26 with no children and where I held most of my weight (hips and ass). I have been fully committed to my journey even my doctors are proud of my success.
  16. I hear ya. I worried about the same thing. I wanted to make sure I lost enough weight to make it worth it. But I'm happy to say that I had sleeve surgery 5 months ago, had no complications, have lost 35 pounds, and plan on losing another 35 within a year.

Help! chest pain after eating (4 ypo)

Hi Tia, I totally empathise with you. I am 8 years post op, and I suffered complications within months of my op. I experience pain in my chest, like you after eating food. Even though you are many years post op, your stomach pouch can still change. Scar tissue and adhesions can occur, causing a restriction. It does sound like the entrance to your pouch is restricted. I totally understand that terrible feeling when you are hit with pain, your body temperature and heart rate go up... Don't think that complications can't occur even many years after the original operation. Its only with time that problems are arising in GBP RNY patients. My bariatric surgeon has no interest in helping me, the doctors don't want bariatric surgery to be seen as a failure. You need to see a bariatric or Upper GI specialist. At least an MRI is called for. But not all problems show up on scans. I suffered internal hernias and scarring- none of which showed up on MRI, ultrasound etc. I was called a liar until I was opened up and the problems were found. I underwent many corrective surgeries and now live with constant pain. I was passed on to Pain Management, who are only concerned with getting me off opioid pain relief even though no other medications help. Anyway, in my humble opinion, I believe you may have adhesions blocking entry to your food pouch. The fact that you can not tolerate soft foods, inducing a blockage and subsequent pain; you definitely need medical attention. Get yourself to the ER- induce the pain by eating so that they can see what happens. Don't take no for an answer! I wish you the best of luck, please report back as I would really like to know how you get on. Please feel free to message me if you prefer a personal chat/support. Becks
  18. Oftentimes, people don't post when things are going well, but I thought I would chime in with my good experiences for those still researching. Today I am 8 weeks post surgery and weighed in this morning at 199.5, a number I haven't seen on the scale in more than 27 years. I've lost about 31.5 pounds since day of surgery and I think 84.5 since I began the 6 month supervised diet with my surgeon. I feel GREAT! I wouldn't say I have tons of energy, but I do have more than the early weeks after surgery. I go to the gym each morning and workout for 60 minutes, which has been helpful both physically and mentally. I haven't had any complications per se, other than constipation, which my nutritionist has suggested chia seeds and spinach added to my protein smoothie and it seems to be working. I had a month off after surgery, which surprised me, but my surgeon insisted. I'm glad I did because it gave me to opportunity to focus on healing, getting better, getting to the gym, and figuring out how to drink and eat. I'm hoping to lose 10 pounds this month, prior to my next surgeon visit. And my fitness goals include getting back into weight training, in addition to the cardio I've been doing.
  19. Hey! Seeing this a little late, but Dr. Bagshahi (Bagshahi Bariatric in Fort Worth) is amazing!! He specializes in complicated revisions and also does the duodenal switch. He actually does the DS in one surgery rather than two separate surgeries like some do, if possible. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and did his surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic. He did my sleeve in March and my husband’s last week! Very thorough. Love him!
  20. According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

April 11 vsg Hw:249 Sw: 221 Cw: 207 I haven't been on the forum since surgery, but it's been going great. Surgery day was awful in terms of being uncomfortable and nauseated. Day 2 was better and I was determined to go home so I made sure to get my liquids in on schedule otherwise I would have had to stay in the hospital until I could meet their guidelines. I had incision pain, but only took gabapentin, the narcotics didn't help and made me loopy and I was worried about dependence since I'm susceptible to that. I started back swimming last week (2.5 weeks from surgery). I do a deep water aerobics class twice a week, but haven't gotten back to lap swimming yet. I'm still on pureed food but have cheated with a little bit of meat here and there, but I have no problem with meat. I had a couple instances of pushing my restrictions because I ate egg salad too fast. I need to work on slowing down eating, but pureed foods go down quick. Overall I'm very happy with the results, lack of complications and the fact that I have a whole new wardrobe available to me (lost weight once before taking Saxenda, gained it all back after I stopped the meds, but kept all the skinny clothes.) Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. It's natural to go through a range of emotions and thoughts. Use the six months to keep thinking about it, but follow through with the plan and requirements and you can always change your mind right before the surgery date. I think it's hard to be 100% sure of anything these days. I started out sure I wanted bypass, then after speaking with my doctors changed my mind to the sleeve and then I had doubts about a week before surgery, afraid of dying on the table all because I was too fat and chose the surgery. But here I am 5 months later and I had no surgery complications, no problems and I'm 49 pounds lighter.

Thx. I haven’t had any complications and yes 4 years is a long time to have some crazy side effect like this. What is a stricture?
