    Setback

I had VGS in March 2019. I was doing good but then got severely under weight. I have since done the exact opposite and about 30 pounds over weight. I’m terrified that I have stretched my pouch and that I’m never going to get the weight back off.
  3. Had a few of these recently and it's nice to remember it's happening: Showered at the gym (open stalls) - that was a bit of a process because I look pretty buff with my gym clothes on (arms and legs muscular and no loose skin, decent chest definition that's noticeable in a t-shirt), but my torso and the place I sit on look melted without clothes. But I did it. And nobody looked. Freedom. Got hit on by two girls in IKEA. In fact, I had to ask them if I could help them with something as they were staring uncomfortably long, and I've gotten pretty aware of that, having been fat for a long time. They giggled and one said 'oh we just thought you were cute hee-hee'. Oh. Oooh. I am honestly still reminded whenever two things happen: I need to tie my shoelaces or I need to sit on some flimsy chair. What a relief it is to simply ... bend down and tie those damn shoes! And if a chair breaks (thankfully, it never really happened), it's not my fault anymore. I have a 10-hour flight coming up and I've been lucky to get a business seat. Can't wait to feel how nice the extra space is, compared to before when it was absolutely necessary to pay 6x for a seat in the front to fit me.

    Everything

Hello, I was just wondering something. Anyone with PCOS, GERD, FATTY LIVER all or some of these conditions, what is the most weight that you guys have lost with the gastric bypass? And for anyone who's had the bypass how did you guys prevent excess skin and, did you guys require surgery to fix the excess skin on your body such as: A BBL, TUMMY TUCK, BREAST AUGUMATAION? Hopefully, my surgery date will be in April/May because I have to get an endoscopy and I'm super excited but nervous at the same time about my surgery. And my main concern is I had an allergic reaction to my birth control in 2019 so I was just wondering what type of conceperative do guys use to prevent pregnancy without birth control do you guys use the depicote, IUD?

    High Ferritin

how high is it? Mine is almost always above the normal range, and the surgeon just shrugs. I guess it depends on HOW high it is. I'll check my chart and update this in a minute well, the last three years it's been 69, 111, and 205. I'm pretty sure it's been over 200 in earlier years - I'll check. OK. For some reason, only the last three years were on the graph - but I manually looked back on my chart for earlier years. It was always over 200 until I hit that 69 in 2019 - which was surprising because it'd always been in the 200s. But it started going up again in 2020 (to that 111 reading) - and now back in the 200s. High end of the range for women is 200 - so mine usually runs a little above normal. They never said anything about it, so.. if they feel yours is too high, they'll probably have you cut back on your iron supplementation

    Determining Goal Weight

the psychologist asked me what my goal weight was at my first appt with him, I think so he'd know if I was being realistic or not. I blurted out 199 lbs, which at the time seemed like a pipe dream to me after weighing over 300 for 20 years. I was shocked when he said "that sounds do-able". The surgeon never gave me a goal weight, he just said that the average patient loses about 70% of his/her excess weight. as I got closer to 199, I told the dietitian I wanted to try to get down to 170. She said if I worked really hard at it, I could probably get there. When I got to 170, I told her I wanted to shoot for 150. She told me that was kind of unrealistic, only about 10-15% of their patients get down to a normal BMI. But...I made it. so anyway, the point of this is, your goal weight can change as you go along in your journey.

    Determining Goal Weight

Ultimately, your surgery decides your goal weight. It seems pretty settled in the science that you wake up with a new set point. Your body has a weight it tries to get down to. You help it get there, and if you dare to listen, you'll know when you're there. You'll 'start falling off the wagon' (aka you'll need more than the 1200 calories you're eating) and you then have two choices: A: Listen and settle in, start maintenance. No matter if that's at BMI 32 or BMI 22. B: Look at an arbitrary number and start a new cycle of diet --> overeating --> more dieting --> more overeating. Lots of people don't know how hungry we fatties have been in our lives. I, for one, will never be hungry again. I'll probably gain the usual 5-10-15 lbs the next year, and that's totally fine. I will not start a new cycle of beating myself over the head based on what my scale happens to say. So with all the love and kindness in the world, why not explore dropping the 'perfect' in front of BMI 20? Who says you're not perfect at BMI 26? Or 30? I get that BMI 38 is probably not great for your health, but ultimately, your body already knows where it wants to be. Help it along

    A stall already?

Most everybody gets the infamous Week 3 Stall. You're lucky it waited until Week 10. It might last a month or longer, so don't lose hope and just keep doing what you're doing and this too shall pass, I promise.
  9. The Harvard Biggest Loser study pretty much confirmed this: whenever you fight your body, it becomes more efficient at using calories, lowering your caloric need to maintain your weight. AKA: ignore hunger at your own risk. I'd love to see some data on the people that maintain long-term (like 10+ years). I bet they've been diligent at keeping their weight stable - not fighting it down. If you asked me to choose between being 20 lbs heavier than I am now, but then be guaranteed to keep that forever, or stay here just below 200 lbs but with a big task of transitioning into maintenance ahead, I'd take the 20 lbs any day. I feel pretty in sync with my mental and physical side of all this, I'm just so mindful of not putting myself on the path to regain, which I think starts with the mental prison that ignoring hunger is.
  10. Great to hear! keep up the good work. I have worked with a trainer in the past but prefer to just do the workouts on my own. You will learn the exercises and how to mix it up on your own. I go to Planet Fitness- only $10/month and personal training is free if you want it. I have been consistently weightlifting at least 5 days per week since late Summer/Fall of 2021 after fully recovering from gall bladder removal and I think it has made a great difference in how my clothes fit, how my arms/legs/stomach skin looks and how I feel overall.
  11. Well it is slow and steady, so hanging there 😂 Almost end of month 2 and I think I'll end up losing about 10 to 11 pounds this month. It's slow compared to others but I think it's fine. It could be because I had lost almost 25 pounds before surgery. Post surgery it'll be another 28 to 29ish. So I think I am getting there. Only 1 major stall for about 2 to 3 weeks and it's going down little by little, so I think it's nice 😂 Have a follow up appt on Feb 1st, so will figure out if any dietary changes are needed. That makes sense. I think RYN it's lesser than that. Though I completely forgot to ask my surgeon how much was mine. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ LMFAO 🤣🤣 Weird, bizarre and all sorts of crazy. Well then, may be it's time you ought to say "Hi" to them 🤣
  12. Hi Jerald, thanks for reading all that I hope you'll get over COVID and back to good health soon. So a few things on this. First of all, there can be numerous reasons for making a shorter bypass (see below), and a 90 cm BPL is still longer than many RNY'ers bilio-pancreatic limb bypass (it turns out their afferent limb still absorbs calories). However, while the RNY ends up being almost only a restrictive surgery, the MGB remains a malabsorptive surgery. Most MGBers can eat all kinds of food at reasonable volume pretty quickly. So if we have a malabsorptive procedure, more malabsorption is better, right? Well, generally it's not the malabsorption that helps us. Sure, it's nice to not absorb 300-400 calories or whatever, but it's primarily the fact that the food gets to the lower intestine really fast that makes us lose weight. You know that feeling of 'oh man I had a big meal' you get pretty much immediately after eating anything a little heavier? At least many MGB'ers describe this as tool #1. Why a shorter bypass? Some surgeons want to make sure older patients don't get malnourished (I don't know how old you are). Some surgeons believe a shorter bypass is almost as effective (again, the difference between 150 cm and 250 cm in the studies is pretty small in terms of weight loss. It's the fact that there's a bypass that helps). What if it is too short? Well, then enjoy you had a surgery that's easily revisable. It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes in general anesthesia to move your connection further down. Your weight loss seems fine, btw! But if you need to, the inventor of MGB, Dr Rutledge, is very responsive on Facebook and even does free consultations for MGBers as far as I've seen. He really is in it for the health and for the surgery. PROTEIN! Btw: really, really, really try to get that protein in. Especially with a surgery like ours. I also completely lost my appetite during COVID but 60g isn't a lot. Get some of the hot protein cocoa on the BariatricPal Store, the protein muffins, the quest protein chips, the oatmeal ... something. At any age over 40, you want to preserve as much muscle mass as humanly possible. Even a week of atrophy (wasting away muscle tissue) will measurably lower your burn rate. You will regret that later.

I've Started Doing Workouts with a Personal Trainer

I used a personal trainer at a gym 10 years ago, the last time I got close to the weight I am now. Of course, that was before I had surgery. I don't remember for sure, but a probably did 2 or 3 dozen sessions. It definitely made me feel better. I've been thinking about doing it again. As I near the supposedly ideal BMI of 25, I notice that my legs and especially my arms are looking pretty scrawny. I also have some wrinkly skin on my arms and legs that could really benefit from adding back some muscle mass. (Of course, at 68, I'm a certified Old Guy, so maybe the wrinkles are par for the course, but they weren't there when I was bulked up with fat. ) And though I look good in clothes, I still have a couple fat places that could really look a lot better when I'm standing shirtless in front of the mirror to shave. What I've been wondering is whether I need to find somebody who has experience with bariatric surgery patients, and if so, how to find such a person whom I could afford.
  14. Thanks for putting down your progress again. I see you said your MGB was 220 cm although they are usually around 150cm. Mine is only 90 cm and I don’t understand why so short. Doesn’t seem like that is long enough to bypass all the part that absorbs the fat and calories, etc. wonder why he didn’t go further down to hook me up? Surgery was November 19, 2021. I be only lost 38 lbs, but have had Covid for last 2 weeks and my appetite is zero so haven’t been taking in the 60 grams of protein or the 64 oz. of water as I was… just had a new infusion of a newly released antibody so hopefully that will help get me well again.
  15. I was the same way with water but I found after surgery if I made sure to have ice in my water it actually made my tummy feel better. I’ll be 6 weeks out this coming Tuesday and I can easily drink all my water. It took about 5-7 days to really feel like I was ok drinking more. Another trick I did in the liquid stage is get Gatorade sugar free and do 1/2 water 1/2 Gatorade. I also keep a glass of water in my nightstand if I wake up to put the dog out or use the restroom I drink it. Two YouTubers that helped me - My level 10 life - she has food preps etc and Fairytale Family - she has a few good videos not as much as the level 10 lady. Hope these help
  16. @Esimaintaining it forever is definitely a concern - Actually one of the reasons I want to get this last 10 in. I keep hearing about the bounce back of 10 or so lbs and want to ensure I stay in a happy zone with my weight. I'm pretty neurotic about weighing quite often (at least 4-5 times per week) and if I'm up 1-2 lbs I make sure I get back to the basics (not crash dieting,) by making sure I get in the fluids first - That keeps me fully and less snacky. @ 5lbs I start freaking out and typically do go back to real basics (tracking and measuring everything I put in my mouth). This usually happens after a vacation when I just throw caution to the wind!
  17. I heard somebody say this the other day and it really resonated with me. She said, "Reward yourself for consistency." Too often we set unrealistic goals over which we have no control, like "I've got to lose 5 lbs by the end of the month and if I do, I'll buy myself a new sweater." But what if instead we rewarded our BEHAVIOR instead of relying on the results, which may or may not come by the scale. Say, for instance, we rewarded ourself for tracking our food every day for a month. Or we rewarded ourself for every 10 times we exercised. It can be small things like a mani/pedi or a new outfit or a foot massager or movie tickets or anything, but reward yourself for making the effort.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I am now 10 weeks post op and I have lost 27lbs since the day of my surgery. I had just one long stall of about 2 weeks post op but have lost about 2lbs a week since then. I'm so so pleased with that. I have quite a way to go but I feel like I'm into the swing of things. I do have a little alcohol every weekend but it's one or two drinks and all counted in my calorie allowance, which is around 800 per day now and 1000 at weekends. Good luck to everyone, hope it's going well for you all.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Responding to TonyB "Amy....my surgery was the day before yours and I have experienced the same thing in the past month or so. ... Thank you so much for your encouragement! I would be lost if I didn't write every morsel down. I think I will always be this way. You are right about the condiments and little things adding up. I do think I'm careful -- ha ha! although one thing I've never counted is the calories in those calcium chews, which would add 45 every day! I'm glad to hear from you, and hope I will be over this slump soon. I'm trying to add 10 minutes to my exercise daily, but still don't see any difference on the scales. I'll be glad when I can get out hiking again -- too much snow for me now!

    Protein Intake A Struggle

Try Unjury chicken soup protein. It is 21 grams of protein in 10 ounces of fluid. It is pretty tasty and goes down much beter for me than the sweet shakes that I liked at one time but and so far over them now. I have been using Unjury for a couple months to supplement my protein and it is working quite well.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Hi. My surgery was on 28th of September. I weight 220 pounds (100 kg) in surgery date and I am 5’7 (172cm) tall. My goal weight is 149-157 pounds So far I am down many clothing sizes and about 52 pounds ( 24 kg). So 10-15 more pounds to go to hit my goal. I have not lost any weights for 2 weeks now. Getting a bit stressed by that. I do Pilates and weightlifting 4-5 times a week and I am active. I walk a lot and use a bike more then the car. All of my blood work came out great, and I am eating enough protein and so on, but I just found out that I have inactive thyroid and possibly fatty liver. That came as a bit of shock to me. Does anyone have experience with thyroid problems ?
  22. This just hit me the past two days - sleeved 12/22/2021. I woke up 2 days ago at 3 AM and that was it I was done sleeping. I had slept 5 hours and I was energized. Then I couldn’t fall asleep last night until 3 AM which meant I was up 24 hours. My husband even asked if I drank coffee because that’s how much energy I had - for 24 hours straight! Nope just Water. So I woke up at 8 AM that put me at 5 hours sleep again. I was so full of energy I did 4 loads of laundry, dishes, mopped the floors, and I was remodeling and loaning my Master suite - bedroom, laundry room and bathroom, before surgery - I actually finished painting my bedroom today and walked over 3 miles! So here it is 10:30 PM im wide awake while everyone else sleeps. This is so weird I’ve always needed 10-12 hours of solid sleep since the day I was born not the past two nights! Crazy
  23. Today I am 5 weeks 1 day post op and I have to weigh and measure weekly as per my surgeon and nutritionist. Today is that day. I’m loosing 2-3 pounds a week and I’m 70 pounds from goal. I’m on regular food now except crackers raw veggies etc. I’m just bored and not interested in food. Here’s my stats - I’d love to hear how you Dec surgery buddies are doing! I get to start the gym on Sunday! I’m walking 3 miles a day around the house right now. So ready to go to the gym and see if I can start loosing more than 2-3 pounds a week!  SW 227 Current weight 195 Inches lost total 32 5’6” my height 52 YO Sleeved 12/22/2022 Stalled for 14 days 10- days post op

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi Everyone! I’m getting the sleeve on Feb. 1 - just 6 days away. I’ve been on the pre-op diet for just over a week, and I lost 10 pounds on it so far. I’m not having hunger pains, but I do have some extra fatigue. I just try to remind myself that this is a temporary stage on the path to greater health and wellness. Good luck to everyone on this journey!

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Sep 1 reporting in again. I have been in a major stall for 2 weeks, only 2 lbs lost. This is new. I am behaving, was trying to increase to 750 cals but have gone back to 650 cals in hopes of making those scales move. Stuck at 79 lbs lost, can't get to 80. This will be the first month I won't meet my personal goal. Was hoping to lose 12 lbs in this fifth month, not going to happen! Still hoping for 10.
