    Hunger after 4 months

When my hunger came back I had to really focus on lower calorie foods so I ate baby carrots or broccoli for snacks if I couldn't wait for my next meal. Carrots did not work for my stomach at 1st though so be careful with them if you haven't tried them yet. I also live on low fat string cheese and grapes. I try to stick to just 3 meals a day but I have never had a strong restriction. Many people eat 5 or 6 small meals if they can't eat very much at any one time. Just make sure to hit your protein goals because that will help you feel fuller longer and drink enough water too. My office recommends staying around 1000 calories at 4 months so I would eat more often if needed but just made sure I didn't eat too many calories. It was a very frustrating time to feel hungry but unable to actually eat very much. My hunger did settle back down again after a few months though so hopefully yours will too. Good luck!
  2. I have finally hit the end of my rope with protein supplements. Every thing about them makes me want to [emoji2961] I'm not a food for breakfast eater, I like to drink my breakfast because that's when I take a bulk of my medications. I need good bariatric friendly protein shake/smoothie recipes. I'm willing to put powders or premade shakes in as long as I CANNOT taste it. If you have a good website or cookbook with recipes in it, that'd be nice too. Thanks, everyone!

Good luck on a swift approval!! I bought some sipping broths and some protein soup broths so I'd have plenty of variety. I don't want to have to rush and order things afterwards. Propel powder is probably good to have on hand for hydration. I have some of the ArmorLyte drinks too, you can order them on Amazon and they are pretty tasty. We were also told we can strain any of the Campbell's heart healthy soups, so I may get a few of those eventually. I've made a grocery shopping cart for the pureed stage on Amazon so my partner can either order it for delivery or use it as a shopping list for going to the store, since I don't expect to feel like walking around getting groceries. Luckily we don't have kids, just cats who act like kids. LOL

Ohhh, I don't have any suggestions for a water bottle, but hopefully someone else will! I've just been using insulated cups with tops that you sip out of instead of using a straw. I have a belly band but I can't recall where I got it from... I got it for my hysterectomy, it was great. My surgeon says I don't need one for this surgery but I'll probably still try it. The key is to not cinch it too tightly, you want to be able to breathe and move freely! Mine looks kind of like this: https://www.amazon.com/ORTONYX-Breathable-Abdominal-Postpartum-Postoperative/dp/B07CW2TFRQ/ But it isn't that one so I can't recommend it! Still, you want one that is long enough to cover a plus size abdomen. Be sure to wear a layer of clothing under it so nothing sticks to your incisions. I wore post partum underwear underneath mine, they come all the way up to my boobs! They are non restricting so didn't press on any of the incisions, I'll probably wear them again since I have them. As for the hospital bag, I think I'm taking comfy, non-binding clothes, slip on shoes that I can wear socks with to walk the halls since they'll have me in compression socks, chapstick is one thing EVERYONE says to have! I'm supposed to take some clear protein waters. Electrolyte powders so I don't get leg cramps. I have a binder with all my surgery stuff in it I'll take, it has sheets for logging fluid intake. A long cardigan that will serve as a bathrobe because I'm always cold. A little pill crusher in case I can't get my pills down whole. Cell phone charger, phone, maybe my ipad in case I'm in there longer than a day. A little pillow for my tummy. That's about it, I aim to pack light! Oh a toothbrush, obviously. LOL
  5. My surgeon recommended Unjury and gave me two flavors to try but said continuing Premier Protein is fine as well.
  6. That 100% sounds like a ploy. Complete nonsense. You can get the whey protein without it being theirs. Just shop around and compare ingredients and prices.
  7. The title of this post made me laugh. Go with your gut oh SpacePossumSupreme ( love that name ) Some people cannot tolerate whey protein and it is very hard to disguise the taste. A mix of whey protein and collagen protein is recommended. I love Tasteless Protein Powder. I can put that in shakes, drinks, jellies, soups and most things that you can think of. This one is collagen based and is great for our inflammatory system and bones. Live long and proper.

Comparison food numbers 4 months out

I was consuming about the same amount as you at that stage and continue doing the same 17 months out. Stalls will happen. Drink your fluids and exercising helps. Our bodies can be quite tricky in how they manage our food intake. If you are continuing to eat the same foods then try changing what you are eating. Change the proteins for other protein. Change up your snacks. It really is a huge mental game from here on out. Reward yourself for the changes that you have already made. Start a new hobby to keep your brain and hands busy.
  9. Did my shopping for my 2 week post-op diet today. Surgery is on Friday and I am so excited to get to have creamy Soups after two weeks of nothing but Protein Shakes and Jello.

Welcome!! You'll have to get really good at sipping on the road!! I'd be sure the doc gives you pain meds and nausea meds for the trip even if you don't think you'll need it. Grab a few insulated travel mugs (one for cold drinks and one for warm drinks) so you can decide what works best. A small pillow to put between your tummy and the seat belt so it doesn't press so hard on your incisions. Compression socks and frequent stops to walk around and prevent blood clots. And maybe a bag in case you throw up. Not everyone does but if you are stuck in a car it might be a reassuring precaution. And of course a few protein drinks and whatever you prefer to hydrate with so you don't have to shop for anything... When is your procedure?? Good luck!!
  11. Stalls are nearly a guarantee at some point. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage. Your body is just adjusting. I am currently 6 and a half months post op and had a few stalls last about a week or two and then a loss. I was the same weight for 2 weeks and then lost almost 5lbs, then stayed at that weight for 3 weeks and just lost 4lbs. Different things might affect it - could be as simple as sodium intake or not having a BM or your body just trying to adjust for the changes. Not too much you can really do to break a stall. Your body will move when it's ready. I do not specifically track carbs either, but I typically go by net carbs when I check stats. Honestly protein takes top priority and everything else just falls in line. I do track via Baritastic app so I have an idea about fat and carb intake, but I don't focus on those numbers. I am not of the mindset of all or nothing, so nothing is cut out completely, I just look for the healthiest alternatives and don't have them often because they aren't worth the precious space. A typical day lands around 50 or less net carbs. Let us know if the carb count change up helped for you.

    Some random post op thoughts....

Thanks for the comments, stories and words of encouragement. As far as age goes, I'm only sorry I didn't do it much sooner (younger), but better late than never. I think for myself, there has always been this "fear" or mindset that surgery is/was the last option and if I had done it 10 years earlier and things didn't go well, I'd have to live the rest of my life dealing with the regret, frustration and failure. After the fact, I feel I have total control and have learned the life skills required to maintain this "new me" until I don't exist anymore. And as far as people-pleasing, I still aim to please, but I'm starting with myself!😜
  13. Do not go by the fitbit, I used to have one and it counts your resting metabolic rate, meaning the 3k calories its showing you burned include your breathing and your bodily functions not your calories burned by exercise. It also will randomly record an exercise or activity if you move your hand too much etc. I was advised by my dietician to increase my carb and protein since I was doing HIIT or strength training 4-5 times a week, so now I try to do 80g of protein with a shake. I do for carbs sweet potato, quinoa, protein bread or wrap, oatmeal (fiber) and cream of wheat. I tend to weight more or less the same when I train hard since there is water retention for muscle repair, so make sure you are drinking above the recommended 64oz to avoid this. It also helps to look at your weight total per month, not by week or weigh in when you are training, and to start taking your measurements to help see how your body is changing.
  14. I had my DS SIPS surgery on 8/16/23. I’ve lost 38 LBS since surgery and 60 total LBS since starting the pre op diet. I agree that getting both water and protein in is a challenge. Hoping it gets easier. Good news I’m off my metformin for type 2 diabetes and have cut my blood pressure meds in half! Good luck and best wishes to all!
  15. I just want to add in my binder from my surgeon's office they gave me a huge list of protein powders and pre-mixed shakes, and they also gave me a guideline regarding calories, sugars, and carbs for any protein source I find that is not on the list. I can share it with you if you are interested.
  16. same happened to me. i had to buy my supply of protein shakes from my surgeon's office. i was green and eager and didn't even question it. but yeah, looking back i realize they probably (at best) just wanted everyone doing the same thing, and (at worst) just wanted my money. i didnt end up buying more after surgery (because thier shakes were just too sweet for me post op) and also i smartened up a bit and read the label. i bought my own preferred brand after surgery (Isopure) and turned out just fine.
  17. Yes, mine too. x amount of protein and x amount of carbs/sugar.
  18. I have used premier protein the whole time, I do have some isopure protein powder as well (unflavored). My surgeon/dietician recommended premier. I have had no reactions to either of them.
  19. This. We were recommended several brands (from cheaper to more expensive) in regards to protein and supplements but they also provided criteria the supplements should fulfill in case we decided to choose an entirely different brand.
  20. Sounds like they want you to spend your money at their office. They probably have a representative they deal with for Unjury brand. Mine suggested Premier protein and i drink their ready made protein shakes. I have had no bad reactions and my bloodwork is excellent.
  21. Hi and thank you so much for the above! I didn't know that about the watches, thank you for this insight. I think I do need to up my protein - I find it difficult to get a lot of it from food as I don't find myself that hungry that often. With regards to sleep, this may be my fault I fear. I tend to get between 4-6 hours a night every day, and I take probiotics maybe once a week in pill format? I need to book an appointment for bloodwork as I haven't had any done since the surgery. Thank you so much for all these suggestions!

    Cutting out sugar

I was an equal opportunity savoury & sweet eater. I eliminated most sugar in the weeks after surgery when anything with sugar, artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives tasted extra crazy sweet & was off putting. I haven’t really let it back into my eating. I get my sweet from blueberries every day & the occasional additional serve of fruit. It can be hard to eliminate it & the alternatives completely. It is added to just about everything in firm or another. I know I have about 5g of added sugar (multigrain crackers I eat) a day & some artificial sweetener (yogurt, protein bar & peanut paste) but that’s it. And none of these things taste sweet. I will have dessert at Christmas but that all I have of traditional sweet food. (I did have a small piece of wedding cake earlier this year.) There is some sugar in the rare G&T I have. None of these things make me crave sweet again. I remember during Covid, when the grocery shelves were bare, I could only buy a box of honey instant rolled oats - it was awful, super sweet & I couldn’t eat it. Personally, I’d rather eat something with real sugar than artificial sweetener - that stuff is so bad for you. Good luck.
  23. There are definitely other brands of 100% whey protein isolate available. I mean, it does sound like they want you to buy from them, but I would compare the price to make sure they aren't marking it up. My doctor's office just gave us a list of brands to consider, plus a few requirements for fat and sugar content. They were more concerned with us finding flavors we liked, which you can't always do with a single brand option. Then again, my doctor also doesn't require more than 48 hours of a liquid diet and doesn't do the puree stage, just soft, well-cooked foods you can chew down to mush. So they're all different. Which leads me to believe many of the "rules" are more like "preferences."
  24. First congratulations on your life changes and healthy goal achievements! I very much enjoy working out and being active too. Just don’t trust whole heartedly what sport devices say word for word. They are really tracking trends and general steps. They tend to overstate actual calories burned. They also don’t account for older-than-50 bodies that burn calories far more efficiently. Several things could be at play so you will still have to do your detective work. Try talking with your dietitian or nutritionist. You may need more protein. You might be triggering your body into starvation mode too, and need to slightly increase your food intake. Make sure you aren’t coming down with a cold that increases inflammation like Covid. Are you getting 7 hours of sleep per night regularly? Is your bloodwork good? Taking probiotics? I stalled at the same time and found my bloodwork was off. But, I also talked with my surgeon who “walks his talk.” He suggested switching up my workouts. I used to live for the weightlifting high, but only lift 2 days a week now. I do more outdoor activities like rowing, biking, and hiking. Walking with poles burns far more calories. I’ve rediscovered walking with all my daily water in a backpack ups my morning walk too. Two years out I’m still finding my balance of food to exercise and still loosing weight. You’ll find it too.
