    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had mine 8/1/23 and last food I had was 7/31 so 3 weeks today of clears, I asked about protein shakes and they said I could get the Ensure clear protein drink but no shakes! I can’t drink it because it’s so sweet it gags me so I’ve lived on broth and a lot of water and snowcones w/ sf syrup and popsicles. Three days ago I had cooked/frozen several large batches of Lima, Red beans, cream peas and bean soup. I had some of the bean broth bc it had a bit of substance and it seemed to be all that kept me going. I ran out and went back to broth with seasoning but finally started using 1 small can cream of chicken soup to a quart of chicken broth plus 2 cups water and cooked down with a bunch of Cajun spice. I go back to surgeon tomorrow and am supposed to be put on soft puréed food, eggs, mashed potatoes and yogurts per their instructions and I am certain that if I don’t gnaw my arm off by then I will come home and eat the best eggs and potatoes of my life 🤣 I have been starving for the last 10 days and I’m pretty sure my stomach has healed bc it growls and gives hunger pains about 90-120 post broth meals.

You can also get unflavored protein powder and add it to drinks that you do like, such as broth, diet juice, tea (iced or hot), etc.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

My diet was high protein (at least 80g), low carb (60-100g), and low fat with no more than 1000 calories/day the 2 weeks before surgery. The day before was the same, except nothing but water after midnight the night before. I think it has a lot to do with your surgeon and surgery. My surgery was successful and my meals before my surgery were anything but boring. Good luck with your surgery!

    Pain after surgery?

This may help answer questions. I also suggest a dietitian who is knowledgeable with WLS https://www.pennmedicine.org/updates/blogs/metabolic-and-bariatric-surgery-blog/2018/march/make-protein-a-priority-after-weight-loss-surgery

    Pain after surgery?

I have asked the question earlier about protein intake and was given the answer to ask my nutritionist but I don’t have one. Not being difficult but why does it seem like the protein intake recommended seems excessive? I understand that with bypass surgery you may not absorb the full amount of nutrients but CDC recommends something like 35 grams per day for a woman, and I understand that under normal circumstances the body can only absorb no more than around 25-30g at one meal yet I’m seeing some women say they’re aiming for 100-130 grams per day! That seems like a lot of protein and calories…what’s the deal? What am I missing?

    Pain after surgery?

Protein supplement are pretty important until you can begin eating your protein requirements. You should be shooting for a minimum of 70g of protein per day.

    Pain after surgery?

I LOVE to cook, I'm not a chef or don't do "fancy" cooking, I'm from New Orleans and lived in FL & AL so I do Cajun and Country foods mostly. My husband and I spent a lot of years on the road for work and really got burned out on restaurant foods plus we live in a small town (we literally do not have any fast food restaurants here, only 2 cafe's open for breakfast and lunch and close at 2 pm)so cooking is an essential unless we want to drive 20+ minutes to go get something. I see the amount people spend on social media for restaurant food and I'm usually shocked, I am pretty frugal and just can't see wasting that much on junk food that I am usually disappointed in. So most of our meals are eaten at home unless we're out for dr or other kinds of appointments and have to grab while out (then I look for deals/coupons, lol) That said...one of only "date nights" is when we go out to dinner once or sometimes twice a month or grab Domino's and hit the drive-in movie theater so I'm thinking to myself, this is really going to put a damper on what social activities we do manage... Yes, we will save some money on restaurants I suppose but I'm also seeing that much of the expenses people think they will have they may not actually be required??? I'm drinking a clear protein about every other day until I can start pureed foods Monday after my 2nd post-op appt. I've never been a big fan of drinking my calories, don't much care for sweet drinks and drink water with lemon or iced tea most of the time. What other expenses am I missing?

    How is everyone feeling?

I actually had the sleeve done on March 20th this year and for the most part I’m doing great! Believe it or not I’ve had seizures since brain surgery in 2009 & have only had 2 since surgery! My heart is doing great, I’ve lost 72 lbs so far. Still not very hungry and some days having trouble getting in enough protein. No worries tho because I know it’s a process and a daily achievement and I’m feeling great! Lots of new energy, new clothes I had bought long before surgery and can finally wear plus I’ve been to the free boutique in Gainesville and donated a bunch of clothes! Even got a couple of items but they didn’t have much out at the time I went. I’m going to go back there and check it out again because I’m down a few sizes now 😊 loving life 💗

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

It’s going to be difficult to get the recommended amounts of fluids at first, and having a reduced appetite doesn’t help. It will get better. The surgical area needs to heal. Did your surgeon tell you that it will be difficult to get the recommended amounts in at first? Also, drinking protein will help the healing process.
  11. A little more than one week post-op update:

Pain - My incision pain decreased enough for me to feel comfortable most of the day on Tuesday, Day 6. As of today, Friday, Day 9, I can get in and out of chairs without feeling my incision pulling and needing to put pressure on it. I was able to drive my teen to work in the next town, with the support of a seatbelt pillow. I stopped by the local rail trail and had a short walk in the greenery yesterday. I'm planning to up my walking now that I don't have so much pain, but I want to take it slow so I don't overexert myself. My legs are starting to cramp from inactivity.

I've been building up to my hydration and protein goals daily, and worked up to 4 oz of liquid intake every 30 minutes. I didn't really have a schedule until I woke up on Wednesday, Day 7, feeling absolutely ravenous. The day before I had concentrated on hydration and come up a little shorter on my protein goals. So I made a spreadsheet, to plan out my protein and hydration intake according to what my stomach was capable of now, and discovered I could get a bit more in if I paid more attention to things. Yesterday, I made 72 g protein and 64 oz hydration/36 of which was clear liquids.

I have medications/vitamins to take 4 times a day, and I had been following the 30 min before/after for them, just in case, because I wanted to make sure they were absorbed. However, my dietician told me this morning that I didn't need to do that. So that clears up significantly more time for clear liquid hydration!

I weighed myself yesterday, and discovered that in the first week since surgery, I've lost 23 lbs. Part of me thinks that is a worryingly large number, but also probably a great deal of it is water weight. I did some measurements, and it appears that most of the weight has come from my arms and bust (of course). My clothes don't appear to fit differently yet, but I haven't worn most of them yet. I did notice while putting my face serums and creams on that my cheekbones and jawline seem more prominent.

One of my first NSVs is that my left ankle used to swell after sitting all day. Recently, despite sitting most of the day during recovery, my ankles have matched in size and slenderness. It's very exciting!

The best news of all is that I met with my dietician this morning and been cleared for advancing to more foods. Our program has weeks 1-3 set aside for full liquid diet, so that is what I was prepared for. My dietician said that starting today, I can start making protein shakes with fruit, and I can also have fully blended soups of any type. So that expands my diet significantly! Also, I am permitted to move to stage 3, purees, next wednesday.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Hi All! I had sleeve surgery on Wed, 8/16, and am doing well. There is some pain from the incision were they pulled the stomach out, but the smaller incisions are not really bothersome. I took 2 slow walks around the block yesterday (helps avoid blood clot problems), which went well. I am definitely not up to big things, though and taking it slowly. My main bothersome thing is all the gas! Burping and bloating. I'm hoping the movement will help push this out, too. Last night I had my first non-clear protein drink (had been drinking Prem. Pro. Clear, in peach). I am taking all chewable and rapid dissolving vitamins, and am tolerating them all. I am taking Tylenol, ibuprofen and gabapentin for the pain, and that seems to be keeping it under control. Still, there are certain positions and activities that give me more discomfort - bending over is not good yet. Anyway, at 2 days post surgery, I think I am doing well. I am still having to remind myself to SIP fluids, as larger mouthfuls cause gas retribution. However, this is what I wanted - organic control over how much I ingest. I am sure this will work out, and all be worth it in the end. Good Luck to all! 🙂

    Reaching 64oz of fluids tips

I use this 32oz cup. I drink 2 of these per day and then usually a Propel water after working out. Depending on what I'm doing, I'll use Arbonne hydration sticks, muscle recovery, pre-workout, etc... I also like the sugar free flavorings that have no calories and carbs that you can find at any store. I can't stand plain water. At night I also drink caffeine free tea to relax me and get extra fluids in. If I need an energy boost, I drink Arbonne energy fizz (no jitters, no crash, natural caffeine, coQ10, b vitamins, etc...). There's lots of drink options that can make it easier to get your fluids in. You'll get there eventually
  14. Congratulations and welcome to the losers bench. This is quite normal as I had surgery on August 3 and couldn’t get much of any fluids in me including protein. It’s get better each day just remember to take small sips. Best of luck to you

  16. Hey everyone! I'm 4 weeks out as of yesterday, and I've mostly been feeling great. However, I got my period 4 days ago. At first, my weight loss stopped. Then, it even went up 2 pounds. Is this...normal? I've been on track with my water and protein, been following dietary guidelines to a T, and I haven't been exceeding 500-600 calories a day. How on earth did I gain 2 pounds? Is it because of my period? Trying really hard not to panic. 😞

    Feeling defeated

Thank you. I have made an appointment to speak with the dietician. I’ve also tracked everything I eat so I can print it out and have it on hand. My surgeon wasn’t upset but he was obviously not pleased that I had only lost 7 lbs at my two week follow up. It’s all very new and confusing to me to say the least. Currently I am just making sure I hit my protein, but I am very conscious about carbs out of habit. I’m thinking maybe I need to increase those a bit. Again thank you

I did keto as the 2week pre surgical diet but my dietician said keto is a short term diet, best for kickstarting weight loss. It shouldn’t be followed long term. (Check research on effects on diabetes & insulin levels, cholesterol, etc.). Most post surgery diets are high protein, low fat, low carbs so probably closer to Aitken’s if you’re looking for a more formal recognised diet. One of the most important learnings I’ve had is that there is no one diet/way of eating that works for everyone. If there was the dieting wouldn’t be a billion dollar industry. Speak with your dietician, do your own research, & listen to your body & needs & the work out a way of eating that works & is best for you. As to your weight loss so far, you’re doing fine. The only people who lose very large amounts pre & immediately post surgery are those who began at a very high weight. There is really no right or wrong rate of loss. There are averages which only give you an idea of what you might lose. We all lose at our own rate. How many stalls you experience, how often & how long they last are individual too. And everyone’s’ rate of loss slows as they get closer to their final weight. I decided I would only worry about how much I was losing if my surgeon was upset but he wasn’t ever. All the best.

    10 YEARS LATER!!!!

When my doctor told me to change my eating habits within that first year or 2 of major restriction, I took it seriously. I learned how to make better choices 80% of the time. Don’t get me wrong, I eat chips, dips, pizza, cake & all the other bad stuff. I even drink beer. However, I eat and drink in moderation and I do it occasionally. I stay away from sugary drinks and those extra calories that add up quickly—most of the time. I  do indulge occasionally. I also learned easy swaps when cooking to help reduce calories. For example, I cook with cooking spay, not oil. I use lean ground turkey meat, chicken breast, and other lean meats. I still wake and go with a Greek yogurt for Breakfast, and I will add Protein Powder in the mix & top with fresh fruit. I love eggs in so many combinations, and if I want eggs with bacon or cheese (or other high calorie toppings/sides, I’ll use egg whites instead of the whole egg. I do zucchini noodles instead of pasta…all these little things that have become habitual are what make a BIG difference in the long run. I literally changed my eating lifestyle. The 2nd component was body composition. I started lifting weights. Heavy weights…for me. The heavy lifting helped me add muscle and lean out at the same time. I don’t do cardio…or, I hardly EVER do cardio. I hate it. My fitness is purely from heavy weightlifting. It became another aspect of my lifestyle. I have lifted 4-6 days a week…Consistently…Year round…Since I was sleeved & released for physical activity. If I’m on vacation, I’m on vacation. If there’s an emergency, there’s an emergency. However! Tired. Not tired. I go to the gym. I think of it as my job. Whether I want up go or not, I have to work. And yes, I still have restriction 10 years out! But sliders are definitely still a thing, and if I stick to my Protein, veggies, and complex carbs, I don’t really crave or care to indulge in those sliders too often! Bottom line. It’s a lifestyle change. Change your habits. Be consistent.
  20. I’ll make this quick. I am 17 days post op. I see the dietician on 8/22. 4 days away. Zero complications after the surgery. I’m still on liquids. I’ve read other ppl are on puréed phase after like 10 days…etc. I’d like to start before Tuesday. I’m not hungry, just tired of only water and protein drinks. Thoughts. I have a feeling what most posters will say but wanted to put the question out there…lol Thanks!

    Feeling defeated

couple things to remember: 1. you are only 33 days out. 2. The "keto diet" is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb diet. It usually consists of 75% fats, 20% protein and only 5% carb. Even though you are eating smaller portions the fat is too high. 3. A baratric diet focuses on smaller portions, high protein, low fat, and low carbs! The fat you are consuming in a Keto diet 33 days out is likely the culprit. I would stick to the meal plan that should have been outlined for you after your surgery. I am over a year out and lost 100+ pounds after my surgery w/in the first year. I did think (after talking to my dietician) that I could also try to go back on the Keto diet. I gained weight 10 lbs before I stopped that cold in its tracks and focused on my portions and eating right foods. I am almost lost the weight I gained thinking the keto diet would work for me now. I had done it before making my decision to have gastric sleeve and lost 75 lbs in a short period of time. But it came back on and then some once I stopped eating Keto.

    Feeling defeated

Hi everyone. I am 33 days post op and lost 16 pounds. I’m so frustrated bc I’m doing everything they told me to do and the scale is barely moving. I’m walking 1.5- 2 miles a day. I am literally weighing and tracking every single thing I eat. I am getting my protein 95% of the time. I am getting my water in. I know it’s about more than the scale, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t depressing to see it move so little. This week I lost 1.6 lbs. last week it was 1.2. When I went back for my 2 week check even my surgeon looked surprised that I had only lost 7 pounds in the first two week. This has me feeling so defeated. 😭😭😭😭😭

    August Surgery

Hi All! Well, I did it! Yesterday morning (8/16/23) I had the surgery. The MD said the surgery went well, and on the outside, I only have 5 small incision spots, and they are all small. My being up at 2:30am is not because of the surgery, but for the potty, and decided to take my pain meds, as well. My brain got working, so I decided to share. I know that everyone's case is different, but mine has been pretty darn smooth. What surprised me most is that I have more pain from the gas (subsiding) than the incisions. I figured that cutting me up and taking out a major chunk would be seriously painful afterward, and had a pre-op discussion with my doc about only getting gabapentin for pain. I totally understand the current ban on giving codeine, but post-op limited quantities should not be a ridiculous request. 'Nuff said. Anyway, 15 (or so) hours after surgery, I am doing well! There still is some gas pain, but not much. My incision sites are sore to the touch, but no major aches/pains. I guess my doc has done this before! My throat was very sore from the the things passed down it, so had my hubby get some chloraseptic mouth spray. It numbs your throat and was a great help for swallowing. I don't need it now. However, SIPPING is the rule! I got major gas feedback from anything I ingested, still do to a lesser extent. I am posting a pic of the post-op drinks I have for the first 2 days. Doc told me hydration was most important, followed by protein for first 2-3 days. I got both from Amazon, and they come in a variety of flavors. Diabetics beware: they also add fake sugars (erythritol, scralose), though not much. So far, I have had 1.5 of the Protein2O since surgery. Later today I will do better, as swallowing is getting easier. Anyway, I am moving slowly, and a bit unsteady on my feet, but walking around the house does help to get rid of some of the gas. Sitting here typing gets me scrunched up, and that is not good for the gas, so I will close for now. I hope this all helps all that are still awaiting surgery. 🙂 Have a great day!
  24. I love Isopure Protein Powder, I never been fan of the Vanilla flavor but this one it is so good that I already got me another huge tube from Costco. I am planning to add some flavor to it (using flavoring packets) I only had my 1st consult with diet recommendation (increase the protein to 30 per meal, 3 meals, 2 snacks, only carbs w the snack)
  25. I cried today, and had regrets about getting the surgery.

I went for a short outdoor walk after the sun went down this evening. The blaring heat was giving my neighborhood a break, so I thought, why not?

I walked one direction for a quarter of a mile, and then turned around to come home. There was a slight downward slope at the beginning of the walk, which meant that there was a slight upward slope back. Well, I started sweating before I knew it. Not a whole lot, but enough to have some beads roll south. At that moment, all ll I could think about was all of those precious fluids that I have worked so hard to consume today were going right out of me! I thought, how in the hell am I going to be able to replace all of those before I go to bed tonight?? I was sweating, thirsty, and still had a bit of a stroll ahead of me. I had not thought to bring water with me on such a short walk.

Get home, sip, sob for a bit, sip, shower, sip. Then I remember that I had premixed a protein-enhanced electrolyte drink earlier in the day, and it was sitting cold in the refrigerator. That seemed to take care of me, along with sipping some more water. I had to stay up late to get it down, but I did it, and was able to come back to a better emotional baseline.

I'm only one week out, still fresh and healing, so I'm definitely giving myself some grace tonight.
