Band to sleeve failure and revision questions
Nowheregirl posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band converted to a sleeve 6 mos ago. The only weight I've lost was during the "prep" leading up to surgery. I do not feel restricted in any way and am able to eat more than I ever did with my band. I'm hungry even after having finished a meal 15 minutes prior. I'm nauseated from trying not to eat more "than I should be able to". My question is related to revisions after having a lap band to sleeve conversion; have any of you had a band out over your sleeve? If so, do you feel restricted? -
Anyone coming from VSG revising to a RNY?
fullhandsfullheart posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the the band in 2007, had tons of complications and had it removed and got Sleeved in Dec of 2010. I did great, lost all my excess weight (110 pounds) then got pregnant, did great in the pregnancy but since having the baby 18 months ago I have gained back 50 pounds. Can't seem to get it off no matter what. Can't seem to stick to my diet. It's like before I was sleeved..no restriction whatsoever, plus bad acid reflux. So I saw my surgeon today to ask about getting resleeved and he let me know that resleeving is high risk for leakage and he recommends gastric bypass I am freaked out by that. I have to have a swallow upper GI xray coming up to look at my sleeve. Am I reading these posts right? Am I seeing that you DON"T lose weight as well with RNY after sleeve as with the original sleeve? I had always thought RNY was the most drastic WLS and the one you lost the fastest with. I am scared to do RNY, scared to have my intestines jumbled around...lol....and scared of the after effects. I lost hair terribly with the sleeve and with all my pregnancies and I am just now getting a normal amount of hair back. I am worried I will go bald with RNY, for real! Scared of the malabsorbtion, which is why I wanted Sleeve to begin with.... Any advice? Not sure I want to do this again...but I am feeling its the only way. -
Hi there, I had a port that was too big for my body I guess is the best way to describe it, it was bonking against my rib area and causing considerable pain, then of course it was getting bonked back causing the port to be pulled around in side (although stitched in it was yanking a bit) So, my Surgeon did a port revision on November 19th, he ordered a low profile port (smaller and thinner is how he described it) and replaced the old one with the new one. I feel really good now, no pain whatsoever from my port  Other people have port revisions for different reasons, so I guess the term could be used for many different situations.

New here! Lap band to mini bypass revision on July 5th.

Hello everyone, so glad to have found this forum. Am 2 weeks post Op and in general, my recovery is excellent. However, am having problems drinking liquids!! I manage about 1 glass of water in 2-3 hours.. Really trying hard but it dies nit work too well. I am introducing natural coconut water, no sugar, and this goes a bit better. But still, 250 ml of it takes a whole day.. So far I lost 16 pounds, quite happy with it. My bowels work every two days, which I find quite OK. I am basically here to get some support for the long road ahead. Specially with the drinking, as I understand (and also according to my surgeon) that this is the most crucial part. Thanks a lot in advance and much success to us all!! Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I have BCBS federal. I am trying to get a revision of gastric bypass originally done in 2004. They denied me because with the original surgery, I lost at least 50% of excess weight. My doctor did a peer to peer but still denied. Has anyone ever had this happen to them

As @catwoman7 said some of those changes you mentioned are just temporary. Like hair loss usually persists for about 3 months & your hormones settle once youβve lost most of your weight (oestrogen is stored in fat so as you lose all the excess oestrogen is released into blood stream). Large weight regain can occur because of complacency & people slipping back into old eating habits. It can occur because how they were eating wasnβt sustainable &/or was too restrictive. It didnβt allow them to live their life as they wanted & hindered them doing what they enjoyed. Or they didnβt do the head work to understand & learn to manage their old eating behaviours & what drove them to eat. All things the surgery doesnβt do anything about. But it does give you the time to explore these factors. Also remember the average weight loss at about the three year mark is 60% of the weight that had to be lost. This can include the bounce back βresettlingβ weight gain, complacency & adjusting to a more flexible eating plan. Or it could just be the weight your body is happier at. Sure there is always a chance to develop an issue that has to be monitored but itβs rare. Comparatively, there are very few complications from weight loss surgery. Some of the issues may not have anything to do with the surgery. I have a protein malabsorption issue. Not from my 3 yr old sleeve but from my gall being removed last year. (Malabsorption issues are very rare with sleeve.) I have low BP. I had a genetic predisposition before surgery now itβs all the time because of my lower weight not the surgery. Gerd is probably the highest risk after sleeve - about 15-20% I believe. But it can be managed or treated by a revision to bypass. Some issues may be revealed because you likely are being monitored medically more closely now then before or your weight & associated comorbidities may have been masking what were pre existing conditions. Youβll likely read & hear about people with problems because they they post to seek help & support. They donβt often post about what the cause was or the remedy. In comparison, people tend not to post or talk about their successes. I know many people whoβve had the surgery. No one has experienced long term or developed new issues because of the surgery. A couple regained most of their weight because they went back to their old eating habits. Certainly the benefits far outweigh any temporary side effects or the very rare problem.

3 weeks post op sleeve gastrectomy
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Bluz2316's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It may seem judgmental but we donβt want you repeating some of our mistakes. I can answer this from both a VSG and an RNY standpoint. High sugar so soon out from surgery is a BAD idea. For example, a couple weeks ago I was 2 months post RNY revision (for GERD) and had 4 bites of a chocolate frosted donut for my daughterβs birthday. To say I felt like I was dying is an understatement. If you donβt want to be spewing from both ends while it feels like youβre running a marathon, I would suggest a different choice. However, if you are craving chocolate Iβd suggest sugar free chocolate pudding made with skim milk and extra unflavored protein powder. Itβs better for you than an actual piece of sugar filled chocolate and you may find you donβt enjoy the taste of chocolate anymore anyway. -

Thanks. It has been very rough. Looking forward to hopefully keeping down food after the revision. But, honestly, nervous about another surgery with more potential risks/complications. I am praying everything goes well for us both! -

HELP!!!! I am going to get a REVISION
Kandi5911 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello, I was banded on April 4, 2007. I was at 285lbs and it is now 2009 and I am only at 263lbs:mad:. I have discussed this with my physician because she do not have a clue of what is going on:huh2:. I go get a fill and in less than a week my restriction is gone. Then I go right back to her and the same thing happens again:frown:. Then she restricted me so much that I could not even get a bottle of Water down. So I went back to get it unfilled. She talked to a DR in KY who told her to have me under fluro, drink barium and look at the band which she did. According to her she do not see any leakage:smile2:, she filled the band again and the same thing happen. I am tired because I have gotten 12 fills in 2 months and this is ridiculous. I have started to see another surgeon, i transfered my medical records to them, and they want me to go through the whole seeing a psychiatrist, and weight loss seminar etc and then he tells me we are going to take a look at the band and see if we can work with it!! I have been working with it for 2yrs. Can anyone give me some feedback of a Dr in Indianapolis who is not going to go through all this and understand what I have been through to help instead of trying to milk my insurance company and my pockets? I know "sorry to hear about my band" lol. Any feedback will be helpful. O and by the way, I work out six times a week for 1 1/2 hrs and my diet is nothing but fresh fruits and vegtables, steamed and baked fish or chicken NO SWEETS AT ALL, NO SODA, NO ICE CREAM none of that, and it is still not working. Can anyone give some advice on a DR. Thanks:lol::smile2: -
Newbie hereπ Thinking about getting the sleeve
Tink22-sleeve replied to Christina1985's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'd love to be honest about it. The weight loss is nice...but I still have to be VERY DISCICPLINED in what I eat or I REGAIN weight. Also, I woke up from surgery with horrid GERD that has not gone away and HUNGRY. I still get hungry (famished) just like before the surgery. Long term GERD and PPI use have significant health issues associated with them. I have moderate anemia now (10 years post op), and can't seem to absorb enough through food. I may have to have Iron infusions. I have to have an endoscopy to check on things next month. I may have to have a revision to bypass. I hope it's not more serious than needing a revision (Please God, no Barrett's esophagus, or {gulp} cancer). Most times, I am OK and have come to acceptance for the most part...but other times I seriously regret having 85% of my stomach removed (I really didn't have any co-morbidities) and I get a little freaked out about what I have done to myself and what might happen as a result of this serious surgery (no going back). I was so desperate I was to lose weight. I gotta tell you... the biggest problem was a selfish, unloving, critical, abusive husband and my own lack of self-esteem. I was glad to get rid of all 180 pounds of HIM! Now that was the best and healthiest weight loss of all. I wish I had gotten rid of him first, because after he was gone, I started working out, lifting weights and got in shape. That was a game changer. I would encourage everyone to do their own research. Look up the rate of weight regain after the sleeve. Look up the risk of GERD associated with the sleeve. Look up the rate of hunger after surgery. Weigh the pros and cons. This is not a benign surgery. At least that is how I feel about it today -
Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?

Help familia? Im lilly married and have 4 children & 36yrs young from houston. I'm stalled for a month. So grateful to Finally I found my community... After 3 months and one month of a plateau I've lost 20lbs. My revision was July 9, 2015 and I started at 230 before my lap and lost 60lbs then gained got coroded port then was sleeved. I'm 209.6 for a full month after sleeve. What are some suggestions family?? I went 5 days ago to have my hormones checked. Hypothyroidism so I take levithyroxine & Xanax. They both have something to do w neurotransmitters and hypothalamus. And I'm thinking with the sluggishness of thyroids if I get my hormones in check I'll have that energy and my metabolism motor will start to work correctly... Any thoughts facts experiences? -
Hi everyone, Iβm having gastric bypass revision surgery on October 15th and have been doing my liquid diet. Aside from being constantly hangry which is its own version of suck I also feel like Iβm in a brain fog. I feel like my brain is simply not processing things as it should. Iβm also super irratible which I at least understand. The brain fog tho is really getting to me. Also for some reason I have slept through my alarm twice which I have never done before. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Itβs making things difficult.

HELP...I didn't know you could do reversal....that's what I want!! I revised from VBG to Bypass 2012. 67 yrs old. Now losing too much weight, feel horrible. bad labs, live by myself. No appetite, no one to keep me on track, horrible memory from deficiencies. I'm not concerned about regain. I've learned how to control my eating habits. Was not morbidly obese until severe trauma and grief, resolved those. I know how to maintain my weight now. But, I'm not willing to commit to maintaining all that is does as older bypass patient. Do you know how I would find out if you can revise from Vbg/Bypass/Reversal. Is this possible? When VBG was revised, said only option was to revise to Bypass. Any advice you could give would be most helpful.

When did you decide it was time for a revision?
JohnnyMadison replied to ryan_86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It's true that GBP (revision) patients maintain at least a 10% or more weight loss than sleeve, so theoretically revision is just giving yourself a better chance. I revised for acid reflux and "only" had regained ~ 25# of 130# lost and was still < 30 BMI at revision. But I will say that losing the 17# I have lost since 12/16, which is a higher rate as a % and # as compared to sleeve, has made me much happier. With that said, I'm only 3 weeks out so I'm actually scared I will lose more than I want and look like an old man again with that drawn face. And then I'm scared that I'm going to regain as well. I guess I'll never be happy. Listen, our stomachs/bodies often betray us and make us hungrier than we need to be. And the food supply is stacked against healthy eating. So if you can get a revision to keep more weight off then I would do it whenever you are ready. It's a tough, tough, battle out there. If you have acid reflux, however, I wouldn't hesitate to revise sooner than later. I developed Barrett's Esophagus which is miserable to get at 44 and I'm hoping will go away with some healing. -
I was banded almost 5 years ago. I lost 55lbs over a very long period of time and from what I honestly think was just hard work and not much help from the band. I hate my band. It hurts. I feel like it's violent when I get stuck (often) and I can feel my port all the time for FIVE years. Sigh. Eating is stressful and to top it off I've gained every ounce back. I sometimes eat 2 bites can't eat another bite longingly look at my healthy or even healthy-ish food and an hour later eat Cookies because I am starving. I feel like my eating habits have become worse because of the band and at this point I'm totally out of control. I'm excited about revising and petrified too. I would like the sleeve but I'm so afraid I will eat thru it like I did with the band. I hear "it's so different" but I wonder if that applies to people like me that ate around the band. Waited for food to pass then slid junk down. I suppose I could fail at the bypass as well. I'm wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience with the band and been successful with the sleeve or failed to lose with the sleeve as well. Any and all advise would be so appreciated!!!

How much weight did you lose 2 weeks out?
sk101 replied to acm22_'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first two weeks has seen a 36lb loss. Amazing myself with it all. Had to buy braces to hold my trousers up for now as I refuse to buy new for the first few months....... I may have to revise that though :-) -
I had no complications with my band surgery (Rumbaut in Monterrey, Mexico...Hospital San Jose), and no complications with my DS surgery (Keshishian in Delano, CA...Delano Regional Medical Center), and no complications with my breast reduction surgery/abdominoplasty revision (Andrew Cohen, Beverly Hills, CA...St. John's Hospital)...but with my original abdominoplasty (at a VA hospital), I ended up with a resistant infection, was readmitted and had to spend an extra week or so inpatient getting IV Zosyn q6h. See how we treat our veterans? The supervising physician said that the complication rate for abdominoplasties on an MO population--I was MO at the time--was 100%. After the surgery. I mean he SAID it after, not before, the surgery. HTH

It is really overwhelming. I've had the band and now the sleeve. Just from my experience, the sleeve is fabulous. I would say to research the good, bad and ugly of the band. I thought I would be one of the lucky ones and beat the statistics with the band. Unfortunately, I only had my band 8 months, and then revised to the sleeve. I do not regret my band decision because it taught me a lot about myself, and my eating habits. But, it damaged my stomach tissue, it was a horrific experience. My quality of life was in the toilet. Here is some interesting information from the band manufacturers. 1 in 4 band patients will have to have another surgery to repair a band issue, or remove it entirely. It now has the lowest and slowest weight loss results. Also, I have never found one band patient that has had their band for at least 10 years without a slip, or other major complication at some point. I did find one patient on OH that has had her band for 9 years, but she is now seeking a revision because of the chronic issues she's struggled with over those years. She had her band replaced once around the 5 or 6 year mark because the band leaked and she lost restriction.

New food intolerances after revision?
Shells_Almost_There replied to GingerSlim's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I find that I can't have the protein bars or shakes that I relied on before and after VSG. Now, they are too sweet and (sorry, TMI) I almost immediately get the shakes (dumping) and will probably have to run to the bathroom. And really, that's what's changed the most after my revision to RNY - I haven't had more than maybe 5 normal BMs in 19 months. -

HELP!!! Revision - Sleeve to MGB
cocoduan posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all, Im 37 and injust got my MGB revision 20 days ago. I was sleeved 10 years ago and never reached my goal weight. After babies and hormonal BC i gained a lot back. I feel surprised now tho. I feel i havent loose much these days. I just started Phase 3 and where i live (Middle east) is very hard to find sugar free, fat free products and im wondering if is the greek yogurt (flavored) and the protein drink the ones that arent helping. Both say they dont have added sugar but have sugars at the end. Also i dont feel there is really a restriction in my stomach. Im still hungry, i can eat half cup of food, i can drink a whole glass of water with no issues... such a different experience than the sleeve. Im scared of failure. Im passing very light yellow stools i dont know why and is so painful. Sometimes i wonder if there was a surgery after all. Any ideas of why this weight loss is so slow? -
