Getting Banded Monday
lyndzileigh replied to DragonflyNY's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm fabulous. The only reason I am tho is because my doctor advances diets very fast. I'm on a full diet as of this Wednesday. I get my protein through Oikos yogurt, Stonyfield Farms makes it. There is 17g of protein in one 7 ounce cup. I eat two of those a day, and then a can of tuna and I'm good. The only thing is tho, you have to add a packet of Splenda or something...it's kinda nasty otherwise. -
I gave up on my pre op liquid diet
onikenbai replied to jessicakolman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My pre-op diet consisted of baked/broiled chicken and fish, and all the veggies I could munch with the exception of corn, potatoes and cooked carrots. I was also to stay away from sugars (including all fruit) and fats. I could have hummus, olive oil, seasonings, avocadoes, non-fat yogurt and milk. No cheese or yogurt with fruit on the bottom. I lost 21lbs in 3 weeks and, although the diet was a little boring, I didn't feel starved. Quite the contrary. You may want to give that a go because it seemed to work. Zero Protein shakes for me... I was allergic to ALL of them! The first two days are the hardest. After day 3 you really don't feel that hungry. -
I, too, had diarrhea post-op. Mine was due to the antibiotics given me during the surgery. The antibiotics can kill off the normal bacteria found in your colon. If allowed, try yogurt for a couple of your meals. I also asked if I could take a couple of acidophilus capsules that I had from a health food store (previous problems w/post-antibiotic diarrhea!). Both of these helped me. Good luck!

Eating and drinking with sleeve
BlackBerryJuice replied to Weigh8nomor's topic in Food and Nutrition
Call me naughty, but I drink before and after I eat, even though my surgeon's guidelines say not to. Just small sips, nothing major. After learning in gastroenterology class that only particles smaller than 1 mm in size can pass through the pyloric sphincter, I'm a little skeptical of this whole "fluids will push your piece of steak right through" idea. Yogurt, maybe, but not most foods. -
Optifast diet- Help!
kgranite79 replied to kgranite79's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Birchmoon, Trust me I feel your pain. I just got banded on the 20th and haven't eaten "real" food for 3-4 weeks now. Good news though, I lost 24lbs already!!! Trust me you can do it. Just stay focused and know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I avoided food at all costs. Didn't go to the grocery store, didn't make the kids dinner...didn't put myself in front of food for a while. That really helped me, because as soon as I saw it, or smelled it I REALLY wanted it- heck I still do!!! I just started my all liquids post op diet and that consists of all clear liquids, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello (which I am SICK of) soup broth, yogurt (light and fit 60 calories) carnation instant breakfast, and of course protein drinks. I was thrilled to get to this stage believe it or not. The yogurt is the closest thing to food that I have had in a while, so it really fills me. I know I felt like it was going to take forever but just know that you will have such SUCCESS with it. I am so thrilled that I have lost 24lbs already, that it has really motivated me! Hang in there, and know that we are all here to talk to when times get rough- we have all been there and know EXACTLY what your going through. I have to say I really liked the french vanilla optifast drink, I actually preferred it over the chocolate. After the 3rd or 4th day anything seems to taste good lol. Also after a few days the hunger went away and I was actually "satisfied" after a drink. It will get better, trust me! Good luck with everything and keep us all updated! :w00t: -
tried recipes today- failing miserably
AliveAgain replied to steele160's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My doctor discouraged me from pureeing anything meat, said it can lead to food aversion later in the solid stage. I have to say I haven't been able to handle tuna salad since my surgery, and it was one of the things I pureed first. Honestly, I stuck to liquid protein my first month - shakes or soups. I just started adding "soft" foods like cooked asparagus and mushrooms to my soups. TOFU! I did a lot of soft tofu, lightly pan seared with seasonings. It was delicious! Greek yogurt, cottage cheese+applesauce, and avocado as well. -
Anyone used Richmond Surgical Group?
imlindal46 replied to angieb12c's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Angie, I am having my band placed by Dr. Schroder on Oct 9. I started my pre-op diet today. It is a high protien shake for Breakfast and lunch. Protien and a vegie for dinner adn there are a couple of Snacks such as baby carrots, ff cottage cheese and light yogurt. I have heard that is is not too bad but I guess I will see. The hospital is a Center of Excellence and specializes in Bariactric surgery. Dr. Schroder and Bregman have really great reputations. You can read reviews on them on the obesityhelp website. Some of the office staff can be a disorganized at times but just keep on them. I know it is not supposed to be our job but it does seem that is how it is today. I have been researching this since 2002 and am now finally going forward withit cause I have not been successful doing it myself. Good luck on your journey. I will be happy to share my experiences with you as I go along if you like. Linda -
Anyone else counting down the days until food again?
MCE33 replied to MrsS's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think because of the pre-op no food and now the post op no food - yes - i could really use a bite of something "real". I am looking forward to the scrambled eggs or at least some yogurt! -
Sweet Spot - when the band is at optimal adjustment, which signals satiety on small amounts of food, and you do not get hungry for at least 4-5 hours. Green Zone - same as sweet spot Sliders - foods that slide through the band without sending the satiety signal. Things like milkshakes, ice cream, candy, frozen yogurt, etc. For some, popcorn is also a slider. The slider food list goes on, but keep in mind that the band does its job best with dense Protein foods.

NO Thyroid and Impact on Balloon's Efficacy on a Weight Loss
jansluv posted a topic in Gastric Balloon Forum
I am 10 days out since my balloon procedure and have lost nothing. ZERO. I am maintaining 1100 calories/day diet with protein at every meal. Eggs, shakes, fish, fruit, yogurt...is pretty much all I have eaten. I had my thyroid removed 2 years ago due to cancer and am wondering if the balloon has messed with my meds and have crashed my metabolism or something. Am having blood work done later this week to figure this out. Anyone else have no thyroid and the balloon? I would love to hear your story. -
congrats!! go sloooo !!! your body is still healing!!! my surgeon recommends full liquids for the first 2 weeks.....but that includes cottage cheese, yogurt, puddings/jello in addition to the Protein shakes.. to be honest though, I have only done the shakes...I am afraid to eat I think....I keep hearing slime stories!! but really, I have had a lot of days where I can only get down 1 or 2 shakes and Water...I get full fast!! I also made a shake too thick, and it was really uncomfortable....that turned me off a bit as well but then I was reading of folks just a week out eating tacos!! maybe I'm the wacko, LOL!!! take care, and keep us posted!!

2 weeks since surgery and not hungry
ashemademe posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, I had my surgery 11/10 and right now I am on mushy food. In the mornings I have a Protein shake, snack Greek yogurt and lunch tuna and Soup. Some nights I have a little baked fish. But honestly I don't think about food at all. My doctor wants me to have my first fill on 12/5 and I am scared of the tightness. Do you think I show postpone it until I start feeling hungry? -
2 days postop... How did you feel?
JamieLogical replied to BrightEyes42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will feel normal again! I remember that was the question I asked myself most in those early days. I'm pretty sure I even posted it on here a few times. "Will I ever feel normal again!??!?!" But I eventually did and you will too! It's hard to believe right now, I know, but you really really will. As for the pureed stage, I never once ate any actual pureed food. I had my Protein shakes, yogurt, and recipes from this page: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html The Baked Ricotta saved me! -
I'm about 6 months post-op. I don't eat waffles or pancakes (not a big sacrifice for me) and greatly limit bread, but have occasionally had 1 slice of light (40 cal) wheat toast with poached egg. However, I often add a very small amount of granola to my greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast, mostly for the crunch. I also occasionally have a 1/4 cup of steel cut oatmeal with some skim milk or kefir in it. I do try to avoid those kinds of carbs but if I give it to myself once in awhile in a small amount, I don't crave it.

I had to take a swallow test to determine if I was a candidate for sleeve. Turns out I’m not. I had acid reflux and esophagus muscles that would not push the food through. So 8 days ago I had bypass. On full liquids still, soups, yogurt, etc. but, so far, so good. Sleeve-bypass May be your best bet. Good luck!

Nutrition Goals - Unrealistic with food?
summerseeker replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are doing so well. I really struggled to get protein in too, its tough in the beginning. The advice I was given was just do my best every day. You will loose your stamina if you don't keep your calorie count but you have a few weeks grace yet. Eating high protein yogurts and drinking a shake a day should give you 50 grams of protein. This is a great boost of energy and if you choose wisely, low cal too. At the end of my day, I total my protein, using a app and if I am short I have some cheese, skimmed milk or a protein pudding. It will all get easier in the weeks to come -

Help me understand fruit and smoothies
Clementine Sky replied to cseidman's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I began having smoothies about two weeks post op using either a plain yogurt (Greek, Icelandic, or Bulgarian) that is high in Protein and low in carbs or plain kefir as the base. I most often use frozen fruit rather than fresh for the convenience, and my favorites are raspberries (high in fiber), nectarines, and the mixed berries from Trader Joe's. If I'm adding spinach or kale I also use it frozen. Del Monte has a fresh peach cup that is no sugar added, and only has 12 carbs. If I'm going to a regular grocery store vs. Trader Joe's or Ralph's I'll stock up on them for smoothies. Trader Joe's also has frozen sweet potato cubes that are delicious in smoothies, and lower in carbs than some fruit. I make those with Fairlife milk. A bariatric surgeon named Dr. Matthew Wiener has a video on YouTube about the "set point smoothies" he advocates. -
Okay ladies (and gentlemen), I need some assistance. I am dealing with the clear liquids okay. I can get through the next 5 day of that -- what I don't think I can get through even one more day of is crushing my medication and mixing it with water ... every time I do that gag and it's all I can do to keep myself from throwing up. Any suggestions on how to get through the clear and full liquid stage and still be able to take my medication? I have to take my BP medicine, my nexium and my effexor (2x a day since I had to switch from the XR to the regular)? I'm hoping once I'm on mushies I can mix them with a bit of yogurt or applesauce and get them down that way ... Also, HOW LONG do I have to take them crushed? PLEASE HELP!!! I'm gagging here!

hi!! my surgery is friday and im very excited...not nervous yet....prob will be by thur night! lol .....going shopping tomorrow for post op things....i finally found gasx strips in walmart, after looking everywhere else for weeks! so,stocked up on those....on my list: tomato soup, protein shakes of course, chicken broth, yogurt, diet v8 splash, sugar free hot chocolate...my only worry(besides the gas),is that i'll be starving...even though i've done well on my 10 days of liquids,i would kill for a burger or a slice of pizza!! lol my paperwork from the surgeon actually says to avoid tv for the first 10 days after surgery, because of the large number of food commercials!! good luck to you!!!!

Discouraged with "planning" meals
Kindle replied to SlowlybutSurely's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't plan meals. I'm single, live alone, hate cooking and I've always been a deli take out kind of gal. Postop I'm pretty much the same. I try to keep a lot of Protein staples in the house...eggs, cheese, tuna fish, deli sliced meats, canned Soups (that I add unjury protein to), Greek yogurt, milk, avacodos, refried Beans, Syntrax nectar powders, Premier Protein, etc. One of my best finds was Tyson frozen grilled chicken. Comes in a resealable bag and I can just grab a couple pieces and throw them in the microwave. The only real "prepping" I do is make mini burger patties (I get 8 out of a pound of ground beef) and freeze them individually. I also keep frozen veggies around and drink V8 and 100% no sugar added juice everyday. I usually have a big Protein shake for Breakfast and I travel all day for work, so I keep Protein Bars, string cheese, mixed nuts and Jerky handy to snack on all day. When I go home at the end of the day, if nothing at home seems appealing, I swing by the store and pick up whatever looks yummy. Whatever it is usually lasts several days before I'm over it and give the rest to the dogs. I really haven't stressed about food prep or planning....just eat what I'm in the mood for, protein first, then veggies, carbs last and rarely. -
Could use a little encouragement.
jenjenp replied to Andrea72's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good to know Andrea. I am almost 3 weeks out. Supposed to be able to eat regular Protein etc. but the only non yogurt soft food i can tolerate so far is. Tuna on crackers. I even had frothing yesterday yuck. I ate half a crab cake while out to lunch. Just the middle not the fried part. I am hoping because I drank like 20 oz of Water an hour before? It felt like something was stuck halfway down. Then I spit up foam. As long as it will get better I will go back to yogurt and cottage cheese. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
