    Determining Goal Weight

Goal weight, goal BMI and excess weight have never been mentioned at all. I had RNY 10 days ago and while I was weighed prior, that's all over now. I won't be weighing myself much if at all.

Lapband to VSG now to RNY

Absolutely. I'm 10 days out from RNY so haven't felt it work yet - all the foods up until solid foods are actually the foods that you need to avoid afterwards so it's not really representative.

Lapband to VSG now to RNY

I'm lap band (2006) to RNY (10 days ago). Lap Band simply never worked for me. Never lost any weight at all with it, although I lost via Keto a few years after. When it was removed last week they said it had slipped right up above my stomach. Silly things in my opinion.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

February 2nd was my day. So far, minimal pain. Nothing needed more than Tylenol. I’m surprised. I had the revision from the sleeve to the roux-en-y. Best decision I’ve made ever for myself. This is definitely different in feelings for food-not hungry even the slightest and still cooked breakfast for my Mr with no nausea or desire for a bite. I’ll be full liquid diet for 2 weeks. After the sleeve I kept saying I was hungry and they called it head hunger, I tried to convince myself that’s what it was, lol, but no-i was genuinely hungry. Now working on 64 ounces of water a day and taking my needed meds throughout the day so I can get them all in. Need 60-80 grams protein but not there yet. 10 grams is all I’ve gotten in since surgery. Have been reads it this is only temporary and I’ll be able to drink more of the protein drink eventually. I’ll be honest, the stings from the shots to prevent blood clots is worse than my belly pain. I’ll do those for two weeks twice a day. Done in Iowa and so excited. Oh and I’m in a wheelchair because of fractures in my pelvis. Got an upright walker and am able to start taking steps!! It’s all so new, I’m loving the excitement this has brought with it. Good luck everyone!!!

Just had the ESG as well

I had gastric plication, the same type fold your stomach surgery 7 yrs ago. At that time it was done laproscopically. I have maintained my weight loss till fairly recently. I have gained 8-10 pounds but I can't blame the surgery. I have been grazing due to the difficulties of life including a husband with dementia. I am taking back control and losing those pounds . Gaining weight won't solve the things that are making me want to nibble. This has been avery good choice for me.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm feeling okay. Still bloated and the line of little incisions wilm remind if twist or do anything that I shouldn't. I basically slept all day long. Being 1.5 days post op, I'm home and really focusing on getting in liquids and proteins and walking at least 10 times. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. This is very interesting and is a current issue that I have been battling for two years to have covered by my insurance company. I had lab-band done in 2013. Starting weight was 317 and got down to 222 pounds. However, I suffered from extreme acid reflux, causing me to sleep sitting up for three years. I was vomiting acid and sick every meal. When I spoke to my doctor about this, he immediately suggested conversion to VSG. While awaiting the approval for the VSG conversion, they made me do it in two parts. One surgery to remove the band, wait six months for the stomach to reshape itself, and then complete the VSG surgery. I gained 50 pounds back of my lost weight. I had the conversion done in December 2016. Everything went well. Acid was gone. However, I never felt restricted at all. I never really lost weight. Fast forward one year to 2017, and the acid returned. In 2019, after having severe complications from acid reflux and developing a nightly cough, I called my doctor only to find out that he had passed away. I decided to see an upper GI doctor who did an EGD and found me with Hernia, GERD, and Esophagus damage. He sent me to a surgeon specializing in throat cancer and bariatric issues. Submitted to have surgery was denied. We have been battling this for almost two years. I went this past week to another bariatric doctor familiar with my deceased doctor's work and also completed an EGD himself on me this past Monday. Same thing, Hernia, GERD, and now they believe I have Barretts Esophagus. They submitted to the insurance to repair and again denied. Insurance says these complications came from bariatric surgery and did not cover even if medically necessary; My new doctor is also a lawyer (go figure); he is completing a peer-to-peer next week to try to have them complete the repair one final time. If approved, I will only need to pay for the bypass conversion. So fingers crossed. I feel as if my insurance company would rather me die of esophagus cancer than keep me from dying from cancer. It is truly sad.

    Surgeon's advice after vomiting

I have random bouts of vomiting every week. Not like the last 10 weeks though. 1 meal will be fine and the day after its a no no. I vomit saliva, not froth. I dont understand it at all. I dont do liquids the day after, I need nutrients badly so I start on things I know are ok with my tummy. Yogurt is a big soother. The gummy vitamins went straight in the trash as soon as I could swallow ordinary multivitamins and iron from the supermarket. I do morning and before bed with these. Thats working fine. I was given soluble Calcium but I can not stomach it and as I am seeing my dietician tomorrow, I will ask about alternates for this. I was told to book a Vitamin B12 injection every 12 weeks for life so have this in 10 days time. Does anyone else get this ?
  9. there are a ton of great cardio walking/dance videos on youtube. I"ve been particularly hooked on "Reps to the Rhythm" videos for the last year or so. His are kind of a combo of walking and dance videos. He has videos of several different lengths (from 10 minutes up to 1.5 hours) and different levels of intensity. I do his intense ones (they're color-coded red, but a couple of his blue ones are also pretty intense)
  10. My surgery date is February 24th, Gastric Bypass in Chicago. Finally after years 10 years of lurking, missed appts(self sabotage), and insurance changes, I made it. Just waiting to find out the date to start my liquid diet and then it really gets real. I’m getting excited but almost feel like I am trying not to be so excited because anything can happen. At this point I’m trying to tell myself it’s really about to happen and think positive. I guess with all the previous issues I’m more nervous about a cancellation or something else wacky going on and some how my surgery getting postpone. A special hello to all my surgery twins!!! We’re almost to the losers bench!

    Need to lower A1c

Yes, there's a lot of science that very high A1Cs of 10 and above can drop more quickly than lower A1Cs.
  12. I had NASH (fatty liver disease), newly diagnosed high blood pressure and I've had migraines since I was 10. I'm 50. Everything went away except the migraines, but I'm also going through menopause I think and they have increased. [emoji2370] The thing is, anyone can have these conditions, so I do take issue with doctors acting like weight loss will cure everything. I knew it was the only way to improve my fatty liver, and it did, so I'm happy about that, but I wish doctors would let people know that there is no guarantee it will make all thr comorbidities go away. January 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone! I had my revision surgery on 01/19/2022. I went from lap band to sleeve. Today officially marks 2 weeks post-surgery and I have lost 20 lbs! I dealt with severe nausea, but it's much better now. I feel good overall. Just a bit tired still. Happy to have found this place! ♥
  14. Hello everyone! I just had roux en y gastric bypass done yesterday and, when researching support groups, found out about you all! I am looking forward to exploring the threads, learning about all of your journeys, and gaining some insight into what is to come. A little about me: I'm 32, a mom to an almost 10 year old girl, and I have struggled with multiple chronic health issues for the better part of a decade. Medications for these problems added a bunch of my weight, and some unhealthy choices added the rest. My goals are to lose about 90-100 pounds, lower my cholesterol and triglycerides, and heal from some really bad GERD. I'm excited and ready to make it all happen! Dr says no more protein shakes

Ya I’m just a little concerned how a shake could work against me…. And since I will probably be only able to eat about 2oz at a time if I can’t have a shake then I’ll only be getting 2oz of protein a day bathe like 6-10 grams max
  16. I had revision from VSG TO BYPASS on 01/17/22 at 3 weeks post op my dr wants me to stop all protein shakes and only eat once a day. Maybe one egg and a little cottage cheese. He says protein doesn’t matter and the shakes will work against me. What do you guys think??

  18. @melanatedqueen Macros are between 60-80 grams protein, 40-50 grams fat and less than 10 grams carbs. More fat if I can fit it in without eating too much. I don’t know if I was in a stall and it ended the same time I started introducing more fat or if it was the fat that jump started my weight loss. But I certainly didn’t go through all this to eat less than 500 calories a day and not lose weight. Much more satisfied on the keto.
  19. I’m new here. I got cleared on Jan 14 and was told it would be 3-4 before the scheduled me and to plan for late February/early March. Well they called today and have a cancellation and I’m scheduled for Feb 10! I had to started my 2-wk pre-op diet today. It suddenly got real!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So 2 months since the surgery and 9 weeks and in total have lost about 28 pounds. Last month was slow, about 10 pounds. Seems like weight will take its sweet time coming off. Slow loser here from what I can see. Though as long as it continues coming off and I can reach the goal, all well. Hoping everyone else is doing well on their ends given we are in Feb now.

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

Good luck! For the pre op diet make sure you stay super busy. I was lucky with having a weird switch in my work schedule so I worked 8 out of 10 of my days. Made me wayyy less focused on food. :)

    Need to lower A1c

Lizonaplane is exactly right. You are being asked to do something nearly impossible within that time frame. A1C lowers over a 2-3 month period. But very high A1C's (e.g., 10) will lower faster when treatment is provided. Postponing may seem very disappointing but it would give you a chance to drop to an acceptable A1C by being extremely strict with your diet, exercising, and taking any medication prescribed to you. The only other possible option (and maybe not a great one) is to consult with an endocrinologist about whether the endocrinologist believes you could safely undergo the procedure with your current A1C. But he or she would have to consult with and get the approval of your bariatric surgeon for this.
  23. I had Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and did treatment from 2016 to 2019. My dietician helped me with the food issues and my therapist dealt with the mental issues. I had to figure out what void or pain I was replacing with food and what my triggers were. I also had to replace the junk food that I craved late at night with real food like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a bowl of soup.

    Determining Goal Weight

Neither my surgeon nor my PCP ever mentioned BMI when working with me to set a goal weight. I will never be a "healthy" BMI because that, for me, would be 184 lbs. and I have almost 200 lbs. of lean body mass. So I picked a number based on body fat. For a man, below 25% is average, below 20% is good, and 15% is fit (as in flat stomach, at least for people who don't have a ton of excess skin). So I took my pre-surgery muscle mass, subtracted 10% since I knew I'd lose muscle mass as I lost fat, then added back in 20% body fat, and came up with my goal. Every three months I get a DXA scan because as I work out and lift weights, my muscle IS coming back, so I adjust my goal. Next scan is in March.
  25. Tummy tuck (included muscle repair no lipo) on 1/19/22 I am 2 weeks PO tomorrow The good: I felt the pain was less than I imagined. I felt sore (and still do slightly) of course but it was far less than I anticipated. The horrible pouch, AKA Joey, is GONE! What a relief! Good riddance to Joey! At my appointment yesterday I was told I am healing VERY fast and ahead of the curve. They said I look more like 4+ weeks. Everything looks good! I’m pleased already with my results even with the above the suture line swelling mid line. The bad: Constipation experience 2-3 days post op (I’ve blocked it out). I won’t get graphic but dear lord this was not good! The pain of this while being sore and stitched up was horrible! Yes, I took all the stuff yo prevent this. However, each time I get surgery this happens to me! I’d rather give birth! The drains…. I knew I would hate them and I did. One drain leaked from the site for 7 days. Once that was removed it helped a lot. The second drain (non leaker) was just removed yesterday so I am feeling like a human! Indigestion and gas have been an issue. It is quite unpleasant to be bloated with when you are stitched up. Advice: You need a person to help the first few days for sure. Changing dressings, emptying drains initially would have been impossible for me if I didn’t have my husband. Don’t try this alone! Get a recliner. We already had an electric one so it helped me a lot. I sleep in it and don’t think I could possibly sleep anywhere else as I am NOT normally a back sleeper. The recliner helps adjust your position so you can find the sweet spot where you don’t hurt. Drink lots of fluids and eat foods that do not create gas. Be kind to yourself. If you are like me, you have wanted this surgery for a long time. Don’t try to do too much so that you cause a complication. Have a firm pillow at hand so you can press on your tummy when trying to get up in the beginning or sneezing/coughing (ugh). I hope this helps someone. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
