Need quick tips to lose 5lbs before last appt!
GreenTealael replied to rebeccalynn319's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Disclaimers: I am not a physician & It's not really suggested to lose weight through precarious methods because of (fill in the blanks)* .... Reality: 3 day colon cleanse regime available at pharmacies & health food stores; extended fasting with adequate fluids; zero carb week leading up to weigh in; follow the liquids only pre-op diet... (I would honestly only do things that you would conceivably need to do right before surgery because those methods are usually physician approved) * Also consider calling your team to ask for suggestions -
How exciting!!! I'm happy the ball is rolling fast for you. I wish you all the luck in the world with your surgery! You'll do great. I hope you have an easy recovery.

Are my expectations too high?
NovaLuna replied to jackie1533's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The amount of weight you end up losing with VSG depends on a number of things: diet, exercise, lifestyle, your overall commitment to changing bad habits, and the size of the pouch your surgeon makes can make all the difference in your overall weight loss. Statistically I was told VSG has an average of 50-70% excess weight loss. But that statistic includes the people who work their tails off to improve their result, the people who follow the guidelines but don't go over the top, the people who mostly follow the guidelines, and those who don't follow their guidelines at all. I'm sure that if you do everything you're supposed to do you could get above the 50-70% excess weight loss because there are several people on this site who were able to do it. If you go by statisics you'd lose about 75-105 pounds. But I'm sure with hard work you could lose a lot more than that! Everyone's body works differently. Some people lose fast while others lose slow. I'm one of the slow ones... but I've still lost 151 pounds and am still losing even if it's only 1-3 pounds a week (I lost two pounds this week). Congrats on your upcoming surgery and I wish you the best! -
February 2020 Post-Op Thread
Lesmud replied to ResaRoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone I had surgery on 2/28/2020. I’m down 56 pounds and have 28 more to go. I am doing well other than having some gurd issues. Haven’t really been too consistent about counting carbs or protein but doing my best to eat well. I still get a sweet tooth but will eat a popsicle or a Hershey kiss and I’m good. I do sometimes feel as if I’m swallowing air when I eat and get full extra fast. Overall I’m very happy with my progress, glad to hear from everyone. -
You're right! Today my rings were looser on my fingers, and I know I haven't lost that fast! I wish! Thanks.

Don't go out buying a whole new wardrobe yet because you'll blow through the sizes fast. I even SKIPPED sizes! I somehow went from a 32 in pants to a 26 in pants to a 22 in pants to an 18 in pants. In shirts I was a 6xl then a 4xl then a 1xl and now I wear an xl or 0xl. Buy clothes off the clearance rack until your weight loss slows or it'll just be a waste of money. I'm lucky in that most of my clothes are from family members.

Drive to Eat vs. Actual Hunger
ChubRub replied to WhatATool:-)'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your thoughts and feelings are completely normal, especially while you are still on liquids. Once you graduate to solids you will be amazed at the "full" feeling you have after just a few bites. You may also find that your taste buds change too. Food was my hobby too! While I was eating breakfast, I would be thinking about what I wanted for lunch, etc. I craved fast food, chocolate, etc. Now I'm completely satisfied eating a greek yogurt (and it takes me a while to eat it). Covid has gotten in the way of my social life, but I look forward to the next party I go to, where I can focus solely on the company, and not obsess about when they are putting out dessert! LOL!! -
I hate to ask this question but I am month 4/6 in pre-approval process. My whole life I have tried anything you can think of and I have been so very sure each one was the answer. I usually lose between 8-12 pounds each attempt and then stall. It's been the same thing pre-op. I did intermittent fasting with being gluten free since 7/31/19, no problem fasting 20-22 hours but when I would try to do alternate day fasting or 24 hour fasting I would gain with the lower calories. I have researched starvation mode and most experts agree it does not exist. I ended up averaging 19 hours and plateaued at 12 pounds after 3 months and then started gaining again even with the fasting. When I did my pre-op I was at one of my lower weights (my weight plot looks like shark teeth) and was told I was not allowed to gain at all during the process or my surgery would be denied. As part of my pre-op I have continued intermittent fasting for an average of 16 hours but I also gave up all grains, dairy, sugar, and soy. I have lost another 12 pounds for a total of 24 but cannot get any lower. I've played with calories, food types, anything I can think of. I track all my calories and activities and range 1200-1500 being mostly on the lower end of the range and get at least 30 mins of walking 5 days a week. I have no emotional issues with food and am very disciplined. I do have Hashimoto's thyroiditis but my hormone ranges are good according to my bloodwork. My thyroid is almost not existent except for a large nodule so my endocrinologist wants me to have me thyroid removed in addition to the sleeve. My big fear is that there is something weird with my metabolism and that I'll have the surgery and not be successful. It sounds crazy to even say that but this is a support group and that is my truth.

Day 6 after surgery. Tenderness is nearly gone. Standing up straight without difficulty. Finally went to the bathroom yesterday after taking mirilax. I’m walking well by myself and building up to thirty minutes. Problems- Gas build up. I’m drinking too fast which is part of my old habits. I took a shower last night after wrapping myself in Saran Wrap but it didn’t stick and one of the five small dressings got wet. I cleansed the area and covered with a large dry bandage. I’m drinking clears and premier protein shakes. My doctor also allowed me to have a medicine cup full of sugar free pudding made with Lactaid milk to take my medication. Tolerating well without vomiting or nausea. No dumping syndrome. Calories are still under 500 at this point but fluids are tolerated well. One warning, I took a sip of some cold water and it gave me a spasm in my belly. Cold Zico coconut water was tolerated better. Still using the 30 ml medicine cups to avoid overfilling my new stomach. Some mood issues and being snappy. Because I can’t eat junk I am “expressing myself” much more. Hubby is a bit taken aback but he needs to understand I can’t be passive anymore. It made me 125 pounds overweight.

OMG, I was a notoriously slow eater..I took well about an hour to an hour and a half to eat a meal for the better part of the first year post-op. I learned I had to eat slowly because my “full” limit sneaks up pretty fast and if didn’t eat slowly I’d be past over-full and need to barf. Now, I guess I’m still a pretty slow eater compared to others around me, but its not so ridiculous now. I take maybe 40-45 mins to finish a meal now. P.S. The bulk of my mealtimes is made up more of “waiting”’ than actual eating/chewing. I tend to wait long between bites. And again, this to make sure that the next bite (should I choose to accept it, lol) will not put me over the over-fill line.

GERD before surgery advice
S@ssen@ch replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
In my experience, worsening GERD with VSG is a bit of a hit or miss. A friend of mine who encouraged me to have the sleeve had silent reflux with the lap band that turned into early-stage Barrett's esophagus. Her surgeon actually recommended the sleeve for her and she hasn't had issues since. Her Barrett's resolved and she's very happy. I also had reflux with the lap band. Not so bad as to develop Barrett's, but annoying just the same. My lap band surgeon recommended conversion to the sleeve. I didn't do it when I had my lap band out, mostly because I was afraid. Fast forward about 6 years and I had gained most of my lap band weight. I suffered from occasional nighttime indigestion, but otherwise had little signs of reflux. My doctor and I decided that the sleeve was the best option for me. About a month after the sleeve I started getting heartburn. This was easily remedied with a PPI (Nexium). It was pretty bad in the 1st year and I had some issues with esophagitis. So, I saw a GI doc. Today I will still have occasional nighttime reflux, but I practice a lot of habits to reduce my risk of nighttime reflux. For the most part, my reflux is well-controlled. I have it, but it's not unmanageable. My GI doc and I are considering Stretta in the future, but it's been pushed asked until the COVID-19 risk is gone because it's not urgent or anything. -
I'm seven months out, and find that I can eat faster, but my body definitely lets me know when I'm going too fast. Listen to your gut (literally!), and just follow what it says. I find making that extra effort to keep it slow means eating less and getting to full more quickly.

Stop vitamin before annual lab test?
NovaLuna replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told it was fine to take them like normal, but since the labs are fasting obviously don't eat or take them the day of until after you've done the labs. -
Hey everyone, Newbie here. On Friday, I got a call saying that my surgery is scheduled for 8/19 - if I wanted it to be - so I booked it. Of course, that was actually perfect timing (workwise it fits great with my schedule), but I feel like I had NO notice. No time to prepare, no time to get a few things out of my system (like a trip to my favorite seafood restaurant, etc.). I'm not big on pigging out, so that wasn't my intention, but I had to start the pre-op diet immediately and did so on Saturday. Now, it's a GORGEOUS day here in Chicago and I'd love nothing more than to sit outside and enjoy a raspberry lemonade with a splash of vodka (I'm not a big drinker either, but that's something I enjoy on a nice day). In some ways, I feel like I'm depriving myself. The diet I'm on is pretty strict in my opinion (tho I know others have it worse) - only certain plain, raw veggies, 5 Ensure High Protein shakes, and 64oz. water a day. That's it - I can't even so much as use salt or pepper on the veggies. I know I want to go thru with this surgery, but now I feel like I'm kind of rushing it. On the other hand, I feel like I should just push thru and get it over with. I'm also worried because I see all these posts about people not losing as much as they expect to. I'm currently 5'5", 227, BMI is 36. I'm already down 4lbs. since Saturday just eating the way I am. Please tell me this gets easier!

Am I drinking too much
catwoman7 replied to ebbii0927's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never had issues with it either. Fluids go right through you, so there's not much chance of messing anything up. Your stomach should let you know if you're guzzling too fast. I didn't chug, but on the other hand, I didn't sip really slowly, either. -
MAY-JUNE-JULY 2020 BYPASSERS UNITE!! Veterans Welcome too!
WishMeSmaller replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Bypassers! Pretty quiet on this thread. How is everyone doing? Anyone have anything to brag about? Or gripe about, for that matter? I am doing well. Exercising pretty much everyday. Getting around 9k steps per day. Went back to work in the clinic after 4+ months of working at home. And I puked up half of my morning meds this morning 🤢😂 I guess I took them too fast and I am still on one blood pressure med that tends to disintegrate before I can swallow it. Yuck! Hope all of you are out there kicking butt! 💕 -
I worked with this girl... Cindy (yes her real name). She was always saying stuff about fat people... I at the time was 5'2" and 232lbs... She was very thin and would never wear the same outfit twice. She always dressed and looked very nice. Very much a "keep up with the jones". I never said anything to her. I moved departments... I couldn't stand to even look at her. Anyway, fast forward to 2009 i had the lapband done. My WL was slow and she even made the remark... didn't you have "fat surgery"... i never answered her..... TILL ONE DAY.... I had left the company so i had not seen her in about a year... I had lost 60lbs. She came up to me and said... Hey, how much have you lost.....???? I should say that in that year she had put on a lot of weight..... And i know it wasn't right.... but.... after she asked me that i just looked at her and said... 60lbs, but it looks like you found them... and walked away.

August 2020 Surgery
perfektlynrml replied to Bjc1227's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my procedure on August 7th. I felt good a first but then couldn’t pee. They put a catheter in me and drained over a liter of pee. I stayed two days totally and I’m doing the stage 1 diet. Got only 20 grams of protein yesterday but I am striving for double that today. I walked a lot in the hospital and walking at home too. Lots of gas bubbles! Not much pain at all. I’m not really hungry by my hubby just walked in with fast food and I can smell it. I swear they put something in the food to make it tempt you by smell alone. Regarding the procedure, It wasn’t as bad as I thought and it wasn’t as easy either if that makes sense. -
Started preop diet today - any advice?

I agree with Kermit - Just drink lots of broth and the week will pass fast You are lucky you can eat one meal -
Only that this tool is the game changer. However, it doesn't matter anyway if patients choose to tell or not. With WLS being nothing exotic anymore people will draw their own conclusions when a colleague, friend or family member starts to lose truckloads of weight fast after a short period of absence without showing obvious signs of being very sick. A colleague of mine (other department of the hospital, but one we work very close with) started losing large amounts of weight after a short period of absence, she works usual hours and doesn't appear sick. People congratulate her on her weight loss, however, one of my colleagues who works in the same department as I do recently asked: "Do you think she had some kind of weight loss surgery?" I shrugged and said: "Yeah, maybe" because I don't know (and I won't ask) but I'd guess that she had indeed some kind of WLS. You can't really keep it a secret, at least not nowadays. And there is no reason to keep it one anyway. WLS is nothing to be ashamed of.

I currently take 300mg of Fluvoxamine (Luvox) at night. For those who are unfamiliar, it's an SSRI usually used for individuals with OCD. Any who, since my roux en y, I have been having just a heck of a time taking these. Initially, the general bariatric doctor cut me down to 200mg, which was way too fast of a "wean" and I had severe withdrawal symptoms, so back to 300mg for now.* Despite cutting them up, taking them hours apart, etc., I am always sick when I take these now. I have pain, immediate gas, sweats, and then it settles down after 30 minutes or so. I'm currently looking into getting them compounded because I vomit when they are smashed to a raw powder. I also try to take them with food, which only helps a tad. Anyone have similar experiences with medications or tips on how to settle the roaring gut? *If you are trying to get off an SSRI, Benzo, etc., do NOT ever stop taking them or make drastic cuts. You need to wean off these!

Anyone gone to Blossom Bariatric (self-pay) in Las Vegas?
LillsDaisy replied to kmn1109's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
What I am curious to know is: To those of you who have already had/paid for the surgery, what kind of insurance did you have? I have switched insurance 3 times this year due to COVID and switching jobs, and with each of the insurances I have checked with Blossom - they still tell me I have to pay $15,500 out of pocket for fast track. Is there some kind of magical insurance out there that I’m missing that will cover some of the cost? Looking in to more local options for less money (I am in FL) but I like that with Blossom there doesn’t appear to be many hoops to cross - it appears if you have the money you can have the surgery. -
I'm almost 2 weeks post-bypass, and despite an initially hellish first few days-have evened out quite well. Something I've been experiencing: I can sit and drink an entire 11.5 oz Premier Protein drink in one sitting. I'm not chugging it-simply sitting and sipping it like I would water while watching tv, etc. I feel sort of full after but not uncomfortable, nauseous or pukey. I did in fact run this past the medical team who said it was fine, and they initially start people on the 4 oz to sort of get them moving in the right direction, but I can sit and drink double that with little to no discomfort. (I'd say it can take me anywhere from 45-90 minutes.) Anecdotally, has anyone else experienced this and still have weight loss/positive results? I want to make sure I'm not slowly stretching or moving too fast-I just want to make sure I get my protein and feel full. Thank you all for your stories in advance.

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
kellym1220 replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dumping syndrome is real...I got cocky and made some egg drop soup with 2 eggs and ate/drank it all... probably way too fast! Fifteen minutes later, it started and three hours later I feel like everything I have ever eaten is gone. And the whole time I'm thinking "at least I'm losing weight" - ugh! Now, I am re-committed to not pushing the guidelines and staying on the liquid diet until Thursday!!
