    Puree Stage Challenge - Anyone Else?

    Yes I think this is a really tricky stage for some people. Personally I loved it (I still remember the taste of a proper pureed roast dinner after weeks of shakes). It only lasts a couple of weeks so I say get through it any way you can. If you can meet your fluid and protein goals then maybe you'll just get to the soft foods stage that way. I wish you the best of luck.
  2. I did a lot of yard work today and my muscles were sore, so I thought maybe I should try the protein powder I ordered the other day. I've ordered several flavors, but the one I tried was chicken soup. It is safe to say it will not be my favorite flavor. But I did manage to make it without lumps with the aid of my little travel blender!

    Kids meals!

    It's awesome to see others enjoying good kids' meals! 😄 Speaking of which, I've been checking out some UK online supermarkets lately, and they've got interesting options for kids' stuff. Tried a few sacks and found some neat choices. It's worth a peek if you're into that. Anyway, back to the munchies – Moe's Southwest Grill sounds like a hit with the burrito, chips, drink, and cookie deal. Gotta appreciate those free refills too! As for my faves, there's this local joint that serves up mini sliders and crispy tots that are just a chef's kiss.

    No Energy Brain Fog

    Milk is full of protein and low in calories if you use full skimmed milk. Buy protein yogurts if you can find ones you can eat or Greek yogurt has lots of protein in it. Soups with lentils are usually mushy and have plenty of protein. I ate all the soft cheeses too. I could not eat eggs for nearly 1 and a 1/2 years after surgery. I tried them monthly. So nasty. I still have foods that disagree with me. I am a similar age and a similar starting size to you so I understand your sleepiness. I slept all the time whilst recovering. it was like nana naps on steroids. I think the anaesthetic makes you have brain fog. All these symptoms pass when you manage to hit all your liquid and food goals. Now I have so much energy, it makes me smile every day

    September 2023 Surgery buddies

    I haven't bought the variety pack but I buy smaller packs of 4 at Walmart of a ton of different flavors when they're in stock. If I want chocolate, vanilla, or caramel I can buy the big pack at Sam's. My Sam's Club also just started carrying the Fairlife chocolate ones so I may get those next week when I start my liquid phase. I can't believe how quickly time is passing by. It's just around the corner. I lucked out because I bought BioTrust protein powder and didn't like it (plant protein has higher carbs than I'd like and I think it was kinda blah) but my co-worker just offered to buy it off of me for what I paid for it which is a huge blessing. It seems like everytime I think I have a hiccup in my plan it smooths itself out. So I'm starting to stress less. Still stressing and having some sleep issues because of it. And I keep losing my retainers and waking up grinding my teeth which is making me stress about cracking a tooth before surgery. I'm a mess. I'm an overthinking, overstressing, overexpecting mess.

    How long did some of you stay on liquids even though you were cleared to eat food? I’m having some food aversion and just wanted to see what other liquids to try. I want to try oatmeal smoothies maybe try a protein shake with spinach or another vegetable? Just to mix it up a bit. Like a banana premiere and cooked carrots? Or a banana premiere and some spinach/blueberries.

    Pain after surgery?

    I'm almost 4 months out (September 1 will be 4 months). I don't like eating breakfast, so I still do a protein supplement then. I like the Bariatric Pal protein shots which have 25g protein. You can find them in the Bariatric pal store, and i think Amazon, if you're interested. They are 3 oz shots, but i add them to 4 or more oz of water because they are tart on their own. I asked my nutritionist about them vs the other protein supplements out there and he was okay with them. I normally get 60-80g of protein per day, sometimes more dependingon the day and how hungry i am that day. I usually have high protein yogurt, a variety of lean animal protein, reduced fat cheese, hummus or vegetable proteins throughout the day. I mix this up each day for variety. If I'm going to be short my goal, I'll do another protein shot. For you, if your program allows, you can have strained soups and add unflavored protein powder to them to get a variety of flavor besides primer protein. And once you're on puree, you can add protein powder to those meals as well. I needed variety and most protein supplements tasted awful to me. Are you working to get your fluid goals in too? In the early days, and even now, I feel like I am drinking ALL day. At 5 days, don't feel pressured to hit all your goals each day because you're still pretty swollen from surgery at this point, just work on getting there. You protein drinks count towards this and it's great you're able to get two in. Hydration, protein, and your vitamins and supplements are so important. If I remember you had the sleeve, so I'm not sure what long term vitamins and supplements look like for you, but for now, make sure you're taking them each day as your doctor or nutritionist suggests. For RNY folks, those are for life. How are you feeling?
  8. I'm 9 days post op. Was cleared to eat puree food yesterday. Ate about 2 TBL of egg salad and I was so bloated the rest of the day. I'm apprehensive to eat today. Anyone know how long it takes to get your strength back? I feel like a blob. What makes this challenging is I cannot have artificial sweeteners like sucralose, aspartame, saccharin, as they are all inflammatory and I have arthritis in my hands, feet and knees. Hard to find protein drinks. My daughter was able to find some last night and it will arrive sometime Wednesday. Anyone else having these challenges? How long until I start to get energy back and brain function? Anyone else find it hard to eat? Any advise will be greatly appreciated. I should add I'm 66 yrs old. Thanks everyone Peggy

    Pain after surgery?

    I am averaging about 80g protein per day and I am as of today 19 weeks post-op. I still have a protein shake most days, but it's in the form of a Proffee. I will either use a Core Power or Nutrition Plan shake as my milk mixed with espresso or have a Chike iced protein coffee packet and mix with part water, part Fairlife skim milk. I also like to add a scoop of collagen. So it's 30g+ of protein to start the day. Midday there is usually some version of eggs and/or cheese somewhere in the 12g of protein range or an Oikos Triple Zero or Oikos Pro yogurt which is 15-20g. Lately I have been adding some blueberries and Catalina Crunch cereal in yogurt for texture which adds another few grams of protein. Dinner is almost always some form of protein and veggie. Grilled chicken, ground turkey/chicken/extra lean ground beef, tuna pouch, chicken burger. I like to make cottage cheese bowls, so maybe some turkey taco meat and mix w cottage cheese and some low fat mexican cheese blend, lettuce, tomatoes and some salsa. I even mix my tuna with cottage cheese and have it with sliced cucumber and tomatoes. The portion of meat can range depending on the way it's cooked and what else I'm mixing in, but I can manage 3.5 ozs or up to 4oz of a protein. I can't seem to manage 5 small meals so it usually lands around 3-4 small meals/snacks. Depending on the day my restriction doesn't leave me wanting to have a lot of solid food. If I'm coming up a little short and don't want to eat more, I will drink some Protein2O protein water. I do also love the Quest Protein Chips - my #1 is now the Spicy Sweet Chili flavor. I keep them around for days I either don't want to eat something heavier or when I'm with friends and they are having the regular chips. They pack 19g protein a bag.

    Any Flight Attendants?

    I am not a flight attendant, but there are a lot of protein shakes that do not need to be refrigerated before opening, and most are good for 2 hours after opening, before needing to be refrigerated. Another option is to get a shaker bottle that has a bottom that screws off (usually marketed as a pill holder) it holds powdered protein very well and then you can just fill the shaker with water. If you are only able to take a small amount of sips at a time, then only put a small portion of water and powdered protein in at one time (don't dump in all the protein and water at once).

    Pain after surgery?

    I got a few questions below: How much protein do you intake a day? What do you drink or eat to get the protein? How long since surgery? I am hitting 60g protein a day. I drink two premier 30g protein drink per day. 5 days out.
  12. From purée I was advised to eat 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food. (I was able to eat a cup at about 6 months.). So yes only a few bites. I could eat one golf ball size rissole (meat ball). It’d take me about three days to eat 2 scrambled eggs & the same for a single serve of instant rolled oats. I just portioned up the eggs or oats & reheat the portion each day. I did that with everything I ate. I still do this a lot 4 years out. It’s great I still only cook every three or so days & I cook almost every thing I eat. I freeze a lot too. My freezer is full of single serve meals for whenever I can’t be bothered to cook from scratch - just prep some veges or salad & reheat the protein & dinner is ready in 5 or so minutes. Handy to take to work for lunch too. You need to start including real food into your eating from the purée stage. It benefits your healing (getting your digestive system to work properly) & supports your learning to make better food choices in the long term & being more conscious of portion sizes. I never touched a protein shake after I got to purées. Have you a list of allowed foods you can eat at each stage? If not ask your team for one to get you started.

    Oatmeal

    Oats are a great whole grain & complex carb to add to your diet. I was allowed instant from purée - just had to be runny so I made it with extra milk which gives extra protein - yay! A single serve sachet was three meals for me at first. The instant is more processed so goes down more easily in the beginning After a while (can’t recall when now) I switched to regular rolled oats because they’re considered better being less processed. Check with your team though to be sure because plans can be different. PS: I still eat rolled oats for breakfast everyday with a tablespoon of mixed seeds & blueberries. Funny thing is I eventually was able to eat a regular serve (1/2 cup dry oats) from close to almost 2 years out I think but then last year I started not being able to eat the serve. Then this year I’m only eating a half serve (1/4 cup dry oats). Don’t know why. Funny how our tummies works sometimes.

    Weight loss before surgery

    This is what I did to lose 30 lbs in 30 days before my surgery: I would have a protein shake for breakfast, another for lunch, and a hearty (ultra low carb) dinner. I started May 11th while I was still working (teacher), and kept at it until my surgery on June 19th. Altogether, I'd lost 32 lbs by the day of the surgery. The first 3-4 days are rough as you detox from carbs. By day 4, you should start to feel really good. Your mind is clear, your joints don't hurt as much, and your energy is up. You even get better sleep! A typical dinner while pre-op dieting would be 4-6 oz ribeye steak (cut up and dipped in A1) Or I would cut up 4-6 oz of rotisserie chicken and throw it into some cream of chicken or chicken broth. (Like chicken soup, if you will) I'd even eat a cheeseburger (without the bun, or course). If you have the space, eat a double! I'd been sleeved 14 years ago, so I still had restriction. My 16-year-old daughter was inspired and dieted a bit with me. She's doesn't have any type of bariatric surgery. She was losing up to 5 lbs a week just by cutting carbs. She would have bacon and eggs with cheese for brkfst, she'd have a shake for lunch cuz school, and she'd have hearty, no carb dinners as well. Detoxing from carbs REALLY helps. Drink 5-6 bottles of water a day. Have all the sugar-free jello and sugar-free popsicles you want. They're considered clear liquids. You can even start taking bariatric vitamins before your surgery to make sure your getting everything you need. Wish you the best of luck!

    Oatmeal

    I started on reg oatmeal a month out. It was a life saver. It's an after dinner snack that fills me up and adds some fiber. I use 1 packet of the original (unflavored) instant, because it's all measured out for you. I use a 1/2 cup of unflavored almond milk. After it's cooked, I add 2-3 Stevia packets and about 3-4 tablespoons of the Premier Protein Caramel flavored shake, which adds about 6g of protein. That's about 10g of protein altogether.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

    I'm down 50lbs from right before my pre-op diet but, I've been struggling with textures still, but I found some solutions for the meantime until I can tolerate more. I can't do the protein shakes anymore but I add unflavored protein powder to anything I can. Cream of wheat/rice cooked in chicken bone broth with a bit of cheese is a great high protein base for things. To increase the protein I started adding a jar of baby food chicken or turkey. I occasionally add a jar of the veggie blends to it if I want to change things up. I also am really liking greek yogurt- ranch powder for savory cravings and sugar free jelly or fruit baby food jar mixed in. Going to make some frozen bars with that. But I can eat the ranch blend with a spoon straight out of the tub. The other thing I've been doing is using liquid egg substitute, mixing that with the ranch yogurt and cheese and cooking it up that way to make nice fluffy eggs with flavor and lots of protein. Gotta have my sugar free ketchup though! Another thing that helps me with the nausea feelings is baby animal crackers. I've found I'm having heavy cycles since surgery so I'm craving carbs around that time, and those have iron in them. Not trying to become anemic and these are lower carb and break down pretty easily without textures. For fluids, I cannot drink plain water. I gag and can't tolerate it at all. It has to have some sort of flavor and "thickness" or "body" to it. So I do 1/3 of a bottle of sugar free powerade and fill the rest of the bottle up with water. The true lemon powdered drinks with stevia are good too! But I'm trying really hard to get my fluids in.. it's a hard task every day. All of my bloodwork is fantastic thankfully... but hydration is holding me back. I've had both legs swelling up daily from dehydrated water retention. Minimal hair falling out but some.

  18. Hi Support Team- I moved to the pureed stage last Thursday after having done fine with liquids (meeting protein and water goals). In addition to having no hunger or appetite (which I understand is normal), I really don't like the texture of pureed foods. So, I have been eating only one pureed "meal" a day - scrambled egg, tuna salad and tonight ricotta bake. The rest of my protein I am getting from fluids like before. How did you all manage eating enough food to get most of your protein in during this phase AND meeting fluid goals. Anybody semi skip the pureed phase - eating only one or two "meals" per day and the rest liquid? Thank you in advance!

    Any Flight Attendants?

    I am a flight attendant and am on the go a lot. Are there any flight attendants here? How soon did you go back to work? Do you have hunger cravings even while just on your protein shakes? Is it enough to hydrate off of? Are you able to get your water intake to stay hydrated by just sipping? What are the best bottled on the go protein shakes that dont have to be refrigerated that you like?

    I start my pre-op diet on Monday of next week. So we've been trying to make all my favorite meals and go to my favorite places because they just won't be happening again for a long while. Kinda like a last hurrah. My husband is sad that I won't be "a happy fat kid" with him anymore but is looking forward to eating all my leftovers. My biggest switch has been going from drinking my calories (country time lemonade all day every day, like a gallon of the sweet stuff every day just about) and going to the packets and squirty bottles of sugar-free. I've found it really easy to keep a little variety in my purse and I carry around a big water bottle everywhere now that I didn't before. I'm still struggling with the "no straw" and 30-minute rule of spacing things out. I'm afraid that is gonna be a lesson I learn the hard way. I just don't know how else I can really prepare. I bought a binder and some high-cut undies because I know I'm going to want slight compression for the ride home from the hospital as it's 6 hours from home. I've bought proteins of several types to try as we move forward. I'm afraid of failing. I'm afraid I'm going to make myself sicker than I've been over the last year and regret it. And I know this is supposed to be the gold standard fix for a failing nissen but it still scares me. The surgery itself is no big deal, I don't need to worry about that since all I gotta do that day is "take a nap" while the doctors do all the complicated stuff, hahaha. It's how bad am I going to mess myself up afterwards and how long will it take my husband to get me to turn back into "a happy fat kid". My husband is supportive but he's also an enabler and is afraid to tell me no even when I ask him to. And I get it because I can be a real horses patoot at times. Also, there's the thing of physical attraction as well. My husband is very much enamored with "curvy girls"... like he's never dated anyone smaller than me, so I'm petrified that as I lose weight he's going to lose interest between curves getting smaller and skin getting loose, I'm paranoid. One of the things I'm working on with my therapist but still weighing heavily on my mind. I just worry because I am admittedly very co-dependent on him. But life will be what it is and I'll deal with things as they actually come to fruition because I'm a terrible overthinker otherwise...

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

    My list of soft foods from dr is mashed Potatoes eggs pureed fish (I can’t even) puréed veg yogurt/pudding after the initial soft food week 3 (4 for me) I am supposed to switch to proteins @50% then veg or carb last im planning on mashed beans, mashed potatoes and eggs and yogurt for a week or two
  23. @hills&valleys hit the nail on the proverbial head about adjusting eating techniques. Eating slowly, taking small bites, watching portion sizes, avoiding food that is too dry or coarse, etc. is very important. otherwise discomfort or the foamies may occur. And yes your tummy may not tolerate certain foods, textures or flavours for a little while longer so food choices can be a little more challenging in the beginning. Difficulty with eggs, chicken breast, steak, etc, in these early weeks aren’t unusual. Six weeks is still pretty early out really. While able to eat soft foods then too, I could only manage my recommended 1/4 - 1/3 cup portion. Often that would be the protein only & it would usually take at least 20 - 30 minutes to eat. It does get easier & eating does become enjoyable again but you do have to learn the eating strategies that work best for you & your tummy. My tummy is a bit quirky & fussy but it was before surgery too. I still eat slowly taking 30 - 45+ minutes to eat what of course is a much larger portion size now, and take smaller bites. If I don’t because I’m distracted or not focussed on my eating behaviours, yep, discomfort & the foamies will occur.
  24. 11days post-op. I will get my two week checkup in two days. Everything seems to be healing well; I have been fortunate to be off work and able to lay down a lot. However, I have been able to work up to walking 1.5 miles per day. I wish I could stretch a bit more, but I want to be very careful with my healing incisions- I've got 5 of them to look after.

    Swallowing is getting better. I have been eating some sugar free popsicles in between shots of ProT Gold and protein shakes. I'm really looking forward to getting the go ahead for soft foods like eggs and yogurt in a couple of days.

    Something that helped me today was something I saw someone else mention in a forum... I cannot recall who it was. But they mentioned that they drink "proffee" in the mornings. As a fan of the occasional black coffee with hot chocolate, I made a version this morning with decaf coffee and a warmed up chocolate protein drink. T'was divine, and gave me a feeling of normalcy for the first time in awhile.

  25. Immersion day at Mt Auburn was three days ago and I'm excited to get this ball rolling. I have my required appointments set up through mid-October and tomorrow I need to call my PCP to make sure referrals have been submitted. I've ordered some protein powders to taste test and one bottle of bariatric vitamins to get started. My preliminary lab work has been done.  Reading through all the material I was given, I've identified quite a few areas that will need work for long term success. I've chosen two for right now: planning my eating and tracking my fluids.

    Starting tomorrow, I've set reminders on my phone to have breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and evening snack at regular intervals every day. And I've ordered a large water bottle to keep next to me while I work. I find I don't drink a lot of water, but I like unsweetened hibiscus and rooibos iced tea, so I'll be trying to drink that. I've got a paper habit tracker to help me see how I do. Starting small. I usually set too many goals and then I go overboard for a week or two before falling apart completely and giving up on everything.
