Newbie: started off great and going downhill fast!!
DroppingOneHundred posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, this is my first post and I hope you all can shed some insight! I have read a few posts (on this site and google) about this topic and no real answer has come to be! I had my gastric bypass 4/4/17, and was doing great the first week! By my one week check up I was getting in 3 protein shakes a day, water in between, and a few spoonfuls of yogurt and apple sauce through out the day! I was proud of how good I was feeling. Happy with my decision. Got my staples out (those things are the devil) and was happy! Almost immediately the next day or so I started getting nauseous sipping my shake. Would set it down. Put back in fridge. Try to finish later. Same thing. Bubble a bite of yogurt. And vomit. I was so confused. Would sip some water... then same. Walked away from everything for hours and then try again and same results. Vomit. All day long. Those first couple of days that it started (right after my one week mark) I was very confused and still trying. Now, at 3.5 weeks out I am down to one protein shake very slowly sipped over 2-3 hours and barely 30-40 oz of water sipped through out the day. That's it. Zofran was called in for me last week and no change. I've tried food again (pudding, yogurt, apple sauce) and all come back up and if I drink my shake "fast" and by fast I mean over the course of ONE hour it also gives me the same gagging nauseous feeling. I feel so sick all day long! On the flip side, I'm perfectly fine with just water, herbal tea, even gaterade, but it's ANYTHING thicker that causes issues. i am a mom to FOUR kids. It feels exactly like the all day morning sickness I had with my two girls for nine months straight. I feel like I'm failing as a mother because I'm so energy depleted my patience wains fast. I love them dearly, and they are all younger than the age of six, so they have no clue what I'm going through. I keep telling them "mommy is sick" but they obviously don't know why. I can't live off just water and a sip or two of protein shake. Help! -
Im having the same issue, but Ive had so many unfills that now Ive gained 20lbs..some days I can eat anything..like breads etc, the next day yogurt wont even go down...and EVERYDAY the heartburn is there. I did a swallow study and it was too restrictive so again, more fluid came out...but it still continuing. Im miserable and am considering having the band removed. Ive had to little over 2 years, lost 80lbs now gained back 20. This has caused me to panic, and think I need it tightened but I am just so sick and tired of constant pbing and just being miserable and hungry all the time and mostly not being able to eat except for crap, like candy. For some reason, thats the only thing that likes to go down..go figure.

Last night I was on a support group meeting (I'm pre-op) and they were talking about "banana protein pancakes". 1 banana, 1 egg, 1 scoop of protein powder mashed in a bowl then cooked like a pancake (apparently it also works in a waffle maker, but I don't have one). It makes two pancakes, they said. I'd never made pancakes before (yeah, I am normally a pretty good cook, but I'm not a breakfast person). I tried it this morning and it was pretty good, except that I cooked it at too high a temperature and the outside got a little too brown. I would recommend cooking on medium. I just made one big pancake because my pan is too small to separate it into two different pancakes. I didn't have an egg so I used 1/4 cup egg whites. I usually would eat pancakes with maple syrup, but that defeats the "low carb" so I used a little light cool whip. I know one woman in the support group used butter; I might try that if I make them again. I tend to make normal meals but don't make the "carb" portion. So, like I'll just have piece of broiled salmon with green beans. Or I'll eat a can of tuna fish with Suzie's Rice Squares instead of bread/crackers and a side of a red bell pepper. Or if I want lasagna, I'll replace the noodles with mostly eggplant that I roast in strips first. Chili is another good one. Top it with greek yogurt instead of sour cream (I can't tell the difference!) and some cheese. I have eaten cheeseburgers/turkey burgers without the bun. I don't like the feeling of eating them in lettuce so I just eat them with a knife and fork. I like the low carb tortilla wraps by Fiber One and Mission and I'll put deli meat and cheese in them and toast them in a pan with non stick spray for a sort of "melt" or "faux quesedilla".

Other people set goals. I set traps.
vinesqueen replied to Alexandra's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Alex, you set goals for yourself every single day. You just don't recognize them as goals. Anytime you plan something, you are setting a goal, whether that goal is to go grocery shopping or to take over the world. *narf!* have yourself a lovely bit of hard Protein, that should help with the craving, or snack on something healthy (yeah, I know, I know) How are your calories looking these days? Can your calorie budget cover the yogurt? -
Nov 22 Sleeved And Now I'm Miserable Help
iegal commented on laphila76's blog entry in laphila76's Blog
Sweetie; So sorry you are having a rough time. I still can't tolerate scrambled eggs at over a year out. Really weird what our new stomachs can handle. Listen and learn that is what the first 6 months are about. Also had a lactose intolerance for 3 months. Have you tired some soup, don't recommend tomato as it is too acidic, try lipton chicken noodle strained of all particles or hot and sour soup from your local chinese restarant again strained. For over the first month, yes 5 plus weeks, I only had liquids. My new tummy was really mad at me. Started off slow with cottage cheese (one bite) and then greek yogurt. I know the desire to chew is overwhelming but get some liquid protein and try to keep hydrated. It is so important to sip each and every 15 minutes. Set your watch. You will be miserable if you are not hydrated well. Try g2 gatorade or zero powerade to keep up the electrolytes. What does your surgical diet plan provide to eat? Start off small. Slow eating. Used to take me 30 minutes to eat 1/4 cup. Poached eggs or egg salad worked but not scrambled. Tiffykins had this too. Hang in there - things will get better slowly. Hugs. -
What are you eating one month post-op
olamae replied to mewoobie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 weeks out and started soft veggies this week. But shrimp and catfish have been my go to meals when possible. Other than that yogurt, protein shakes and eggs! -
The sample I will need to follow after my surgery is as follows: breakfast - 1/4 - 1/2 cup of cottage cheese low fat or yogurt am snack - 1 cup of Protein Shake with skim milk lunch - 1/4 - 1/2 cup of cottage cheese low fat or yogurt pm snack - 1 cup of Protein Shake with skim milk dinner - 1/4 - 1/2 of strained cream soup or cottage cheese This is the post op diet with plenty of protein that my doctor gave me and make sure your broth is low sodium. As you can see protein is key, if you try this for one day you will see results.

2 cc wow, I had 1 cc and having to learn to eat slower and less. You be careful and remember to chew. I stuffed two Ritz crackers in my mouth last night and for 20 mins I paced and had that awful pain thinking I will never eat again because it hurt so much. But it went away just as fast as it came on. Now I am eating yogurt just to get my crushed pills down and it takes forever to get it down. I sound like the clogged drain with all the gurgling I am making everytime I take two baby spoon fulls. So be careful Amy, don't want you to have the pain I had last night. But I am down 42 lbs now from my heaviest weight. So this band thing does work. I had my fill last Thursday and never had a problem until last night, Monday. I was told the real restriction can come as far away as 2 weeks after the fill. Judy

Hi everyone, I just had a question that you guys may know the answer to. Or maybe someone is dealing with this too? I was sleeved 11/30. My surgery went great and I am losing weight well. However, on Monday I ate a piece of soft tofu and steamed broccoli. (I have been eating soft foods since week 3- per my Surgeons orders.) 10 minutes later, I had severe abdominal pain that radiated to my back. I vomited just a little and had to go to the ER. The pain went away after 40 minutes. Had a CT and labs done. Everything was normal. No gallstones, no leak, no elected liver enzymes. Potassium was a little low. The doctors just called it gastritis. I saw my surgeon the day after and he said it was very hard to get gastritis while taking nexium or any PPI. Got an ultrasound done which really didn't show anything. So since then, I've been eating fine (miso Soup, soft seafood, Protein shakes, yogurt, light cheese). Until today... I had 1 scrambled egg (which I usually eat). 10 minutes later, I had the same attack. Severe pain, nausea... No vomiting though. The pain went away within 15 minutes. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? My sleeve is great, no leak, healed staple line. Gallbladder is fine- no stones. And each time this happened, I did not overeat.

How do you get back on the wagon?
Jachut replied to afw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You know, I've always found the idea of that pouch test very "fad diet" and resisted it. But I've just read it and whilst I still dont think its necessary for everyone to do it unless the really want to, it highlights the one great downside of the band that most bandsters fall prey to at one time or another. Eating around the band! This does not necessarily mean eating bad, unhealthy foods, simple carbs, or high fat foods. Many extremely health foods are slider foods. When I struggle to stay on a healthy diet its AlWAYS due to eating slider foods. Yogurt for Breakfast because I've come to dislike the idea of wholegrain toast and an egg, due to the "discomfort" of a full pouch. I anticipate the slowness and care with which I will have to eat it, the multitude of little discomforts and minor stuck feelings, the "fullness" at the end. I dont know I'm doing this, all i know is my mind goes "nah, dont feel like toast, but those Rice Bubbles look good". I think about a healthy roll for lunch - wholegrain organic bread, spread with some avocado, some egg, salad vegies like tomato, cucumber, lettuce, beetroot and some salt and pepper". My mind anticipates slowness, extreme care and again a tight, satisfied pouch. So it makes my appetite think, nah, dont feel like that, perhaps some Soup instead. Now there's nothing wrong with soup, its healthy and its one of my main ways of getting down a variety of vegies. But if I eat a small bowl of soup for lunch, I do still feel satisfied and stop after much less than before I was banded. But what happens an hour later? The Cookies in the cupboard start calling - and those can and DO go down by the dozen. If my belly is still pleasantly full of a Protein, complex carb and vegie combo, which is trickling into my bloodstream at a nice even rate, I dont even think about the cookies. Everyone always stresses the importance of eating till satisfied rather than full on this board and I would never advocate eating to real, uncomfortable fullness. But I find that if I am to eat foods that I know will induce real fullness and if I eat soup for example, to accompany it with half a wholegrain roll and follow up with as much of an apple as I can, I will stick to much much fewer calories than if I allow myself to eat easy (if healthy) foods. Just food for thought so to speak. I really restarted my weight loss twice during my journey when I realised that I was living on slider foods and had let the fibrous, airy dense foods go - the wholegrains such as bread, brown rice and wholegrain Pasta. I know lots of bandsters wont eat these foods or cant eat these foods, but I'm sure you get my point. -
How often do you get fills?
dhawkins replied to zeniada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I was banded on oct 19th. I have not gotten my first fill yet. But I know my Dr. told me that whenever I get hungry and stop loosing weight to come in right away. As far as your menu I think you should cut down on your carbs and add more protein. Especially in the morning. Try a boiled egg and fat free yogurt to start you off. For the next week just try no carbs and that should jump start your loss again. I have stuck to this as well as excercise and have lost almost 30pounds in 4 weeks. Try also keeping a food journal. That really helps me stay on track. I am consious of everything that goes in my mouth. If it has no nutrional value I dont eat it. oh yeah wendys chili has lots of protein so try that for lunch. I hope this helps. Good luck on your journey. -
So I got sleeved exactly a week ago. The following was posted by me at OH for those of you who frequent both sites. I'm just trying to get some insight into a really frustrating situation. I was on IV fluids only until Monday, when I started clears. I was on clears until Tuesday afternoon when my info packet said I could move to purees (including mashed potatoes). So since Tuesday, I've been eating the following: -Refried Beans (made me a bit bloated and unhappy) -Yogurt drinkables with splendaa(very pleasant, easy on my stomach) -pudding cups (fill me up fast, but pleasantly satisfying) -Soup with the chunks strained out, though not necessarily clear broth (ie, tortilla soup and hot & sour) -Soft tofu mashed into thin paste -Runny oatmeal with milk and Splenda -Starbucks Iced Latte with no sugar Now bear in mind I just got back. Protein drinks and sugar free options were very slim down in Mexico, so I had to commit minor carbicide a few times, just to get something in me. But is there anything on this list I should definitely NOT be having one week out? Only the beans felt like a bit too much. I'm also trying to better understand the when and when not to drink in relation to meals, even if the meals are mostly liquid. My doctor's diet schedule is incredibly vague "Softs: 3 days to three weeks" and a lot of the other ones overlap. The confusion comes because Angeles Health's own literature is so damned inconsistent. I dug up one version of their post-op plan that outlines Week1: Clears, Week2: Protein shakes, Week3: Puree, etc. But my doctor's nutritionist handed me a paper packet that said to go from clears to puree on Day 4! So I did, and it even listed mashed potatoes as an option! I'm so confused! And now you all have me worried. My own nutritionist isn't seeing me because she thinks there's no point since my diet is so restrictive. I flat-out told my surgeon and his team I was having yogurt drinkables, strained soup (not necessarily clear), and mashed potatoes and they voiced no objection. *sigh* Another issue is that when you're released from the hospital, they cut you loose and want you to stick to the diet plan. We found no easy protein shakes in Tijuana, nor did we find anything low-carb that I could eat in the pureed category. We really were left to our own devices. My stomach feels okay. I was eating mashed potatoes extremely slowly, licking little bits from my spoon and could only eat an ounce or so before feeling full. I'm perfectly happy to scale it back now that I'm back in the States. Should I just go back to my pre-op protein shakes? How do I know if my sleeve is okay and didn't get stretched?? The potatoes were okay at first, but now I just feel a bit bloated. I guess I'm trying to get some peace of mind that I haven't done any permanent damage to my new sleeve. PS - The coffee dried me out, so I think I've learned my lesson on that.

When I'm craving sweets, sugar free Reese's cups or a sugar free pudding cup are the way to go. I also like to go to TCBY and get a cup of sugar free soft serve frozen yogurt.

I just started my 7-day pre-op diet today. I have been instructed to have at least 100 grams of Protein and NO MORE than 75 grams of carbs each day. I'm allowed to have creamy Soups, yogurt, broths... and as many calorie free beverages (water, crystal lite, other sugar free beverages) as I want. I started my day w/ Isopure (grape frost) 40g protein no carbs. I have V8 Garden Broccoli soup planned for lunch. I have unjury unflavored protein, that I plan to add to smoothies, and my soup at dinner. Then end each day with another 40g protein Isopure. At least this is the plan, I'm sure I'll grow tired of this. However, I'll try to remember what I tell my kids "nothing worth having is easy".

My doctor requires the following: 7-10 days before Surgery: Follow a low sugar (less than 16gm/sugar/serving) and sugar gree liquid diet which may include fruit juices, Jello, popsicles, low fat milk, yogurt, and Protein shakes (e/g/ carb solutions, atkins, muscle milk, whey protein). He doesn't require you to buy from him, which I appreciate. I would rather buy what I like from who I like. I will have a combination of Isopure clear zero carb, unjury (which I heard people like and I just ordered), pre-made muscle milk in chocolate from costco (convenient to take with me, doesn't taste too bad), and anything else I find appealing. 5-10 days isn't too bad, but then there is the weeks after too. Oh well, I can do it...

I was very happy w/the experience. My mom who is also a nurse was also pleasantly surprised at how well-organized everything was. every person involved was informative & willing to listen, the nutritionist took her time explaining everything clearly. PLEASE Take the nasty-tasing pain medecine they give you. I put it off and regretted it later. For the flight back carry your liquid antibiotic in your ziploc baggie and the script you get in the surgeon's office so as airport personel are rummaging through your carry-on luggage they don't force you to leave it behind because of these liquid restrictions we have now. The guy who checked my bag even let me carry in my yogurt drink that was 6 ounces and not in a baggie when I told him I had surgery w/strict dietary restrictions and could not consume any of the Snacks given to me in the flight. I've been told I was very lucky with that one. Enjoy, sight see but not too much, like I did, you'll pay for it later.

If you have a dollar store near you they have little packages of tuna or chicken salad and 6 crackers. It is just right and inexpensive. I eat the baby bel light cheese a lot. I eat yogurt. A lot of times I pack a few things because I never know what I will be in the mood for or how my restriction will be.

Question for those who like their band TIGHT!!
NJGirl32 replied to new me by 30's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am with B-52 -I like my band tight (most days). I also can not have pizza-that is a BIG no-no. Even when my band wasn't tight I couldn't handle it. Shrimp has been giving me problems. Most bread items are very difficult-unless they are cracker-like in consistency. I do take a teeny piece of bread at dinner (the size of a half dollar) just so I have the experience. If I am being honest I will say the tight band does have it's potential problems. I was having trouble getting foods down and was PBing more than I would like to admit. I was really hungry and it seemed like ice cream, candy, and potatoe chips could easily go down with no problem. That's what they call "eating around the band" and it's a real danger if you are filled tight. I now keep all those items out of my house. I have also learned what works and what doesn't and my PBing is now in check. Sometimes when food goes down I know I need to walk around a little, so I'll excuse myself to go to the restroom -notto PB , but simply to get things moving inside. This actually works. Mornings are rough but I can eat a granola bar but fruity yogurt doesn't go down comfortably. I usually can't finish a lean cusiene for dinner. Like I said you will need to keep healthy items in to munch on. If you have a tight band and even if you don't, eat solid Proteins they really do curb the appetite! Good luck! -
We were told to put capsule contents in applesauce, but I also sprinkle the beads in a teaspoon of yogurt.

16 Mos Out...disappointed
LindaS replied to tntransplant06's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You and your husband look great! You've done so well! Be sure to take time to realize how much you have accomplished. My only question is how are you doing on drinking your Water? Are you getting in at least 64 ounces a day? It can help you feel full, and your body needs the water/fluid to lose weight. I started off losing quickly, but I am now a slow loser (9 pounds lost since February), but I am still losing. I find that I need to constantly reevaluate my eating choices. I have recently been eating a lot of Oikos Greek yogurt, and then I read a thread on here about the yogurt and someone mentioned the sugar content. I realized I hadn't even looked at the sugar content on the label. It was a reminder to myself that I needed to make sure I wasn't eating anything with more than 6 grams of sugar in a serving. I will have to go back to a different flavor of Greek yogurt. Looking back, I realized that I made the choice to buy the Oikos brand not based on the food label but based on the price. It was on sale for $1 per container (5.3 ounces), so I grabbed it. This experience made me reevaluate what I was doing, and I ended up losing a couple of pounds. I realized I needed to stay aware of what I was eating and doing even when I think I know. -
So--today was my first fill. I was worried about nothing! I apparently have a good amount of scar tissue but it wasn't a big deal. I have 3 cc in my 10cc band. I go back in two weeks for another tweak. So far, no issues eating....I had a yogurt and blended food tonight. Phew......I am glad that is behind me. Now...to they gym I go......

RNs, What are you eating during your shift?
Introversion replied to JDRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I now have a work-from-home desk job these days. However, I worked as an RN house supervisor at a specialty hospital during my first year with the sleeve. I'm two years out and continue to drink protein shakes and eat protein bars. While your surgeon's advice is solid, he doesn't understand the time constraints of floor/unit nursing. When I worked the floor I packed protein bars, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, beef jerky, baked chicken drumsticks, deviled eggs, string cheese, chef's salads, and canned soups.
