Any August 2019 people out there?
AnnieD78 replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad to see everyone is doing well! I’m a verrrrry slow loser. I try not to compare myself though because I know everyone’s body’s and journeys are different. I’m down a little over 50 lbs. I’d like to lose about 60 more. I’m struggling with animal proteins, they really don’t sit well. Soft foods are still the safest bet. I’m honestly not following my plan too closely because all I’m supposed to be eating right now is protein (from animals or beans or yogurt/dairy) and veggies. I stalled for 5 weeks 2 weeks after my operation. And then again more recently. What has helped me is upping my calories, which was my nutritionists suggestion. I need to start exercising, I tried Orange Theory and signed up but now I’m scared to go back. I almost starting crying during the class bc it is so overwhelmingly difficult. Lol. -

Still losing and working toward first goal weight. 3.Stats: Nov. 1st: 195.4 lbs - BMI 29.7 Today Is: 187.8 lbs - BMI 28.6 4. Food I am most grateful for today: Yogurt- I love that stuff!

reduce sugar - low carb eating reco
AZhiker replied to Billowyfungus's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
Did you have a question? You can still get tons of carbs/sugar through plant based foods. Oreo cookies are vegan, for example, as is cane sugar, molasses, agave syrup, and processed grains (flour), all of which will raise your sugar levels, jack up your insulin, and turn all those calories into fat, Healthy whole food plant based (WFPB) eating utilizes legumes, nuts, seeds, WHOLE grains (not processed grains), a lot of veggies, and some fruit. Most MO people can lose a lot of weight with this, and I am finding that I am maintaining my under goal weight just fine. (Lunch today was soy yogurt with protein powder, slivered almonds, 6 different kinds of seeds, and some berries mixed in.) (Supper will be lentil soup, steamed butternut squash, and a "Budda" bowl of greens, shredded brussel sprouts/carrots/red cabbage, tomato, avocado, flax/hemp seed, chick peas, cooked whole grain - any combo of amaranth, teff, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, sorghum. Dressing is made from homemade cashew butter, nutritional yeast, and vinegar.) WFPB does NOT utilize sugar or variations thereof, extra salt, processed foods, processed oils, alcohol, artificial ingredients, or animal proteins. My personal take on it is this: I have lived in and observed developing countries that are mostly plant based. These people are healthy, strong, and do not have cardiac or obesity issues. They grow their own food, for the most part, yet will still eat animal protein on special occasions (weddings, holidays, specific celebrations) or when there is a lucky find, such as a nest of cassowary eggs. However, they do NOT eat animal protein 3 times a day, like most of the west does. I am not 100% PB at this point - more like 80%. I still eat some fish/poultry (home grown) maybe once a week. I think this is in keeping with the practice of many indigenous traditions, and allows me more flexibility with family gatherings. (I don't want to be that vegan who gets invited out to eat and then won't eat anything that is offered - that's a sure fire way to never get invited out again.) I still make my choices very healthy - never anything fried or breaded, and I avoid desserts with sugar or wheat. I hope that answered your possible question. Sorry if it was too long winded. There is a lot of good information about WFPB on the web. -
This liquid diet is harder than I expected. Though, I would kill for soups. I'm on shakes only for 2 weeks. But that ends this friday. Then I get soft foods! I can't even express how excited I am for cottage cheese and plain Greek yogurt and scrambled eggs... Until friday I keep reminding myself that the liquid diet will be over soon. Soon......

protein powder in sugar free jello?
S@ssen@ch replied to loridee11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did it. It was a little "different", but not unpalatable by any means. 1 word of caution: many protein powders may curdle at high temperatures. Make sure your jello is cool enough for your protein powder before adding it. I agree with the others. Protein powders do better when mixed with dairy like milk, yogurt, puddings. BUT, if you're trying to achieve a protein supplement for your clear liquids phase, protein jello works: Here's a recipe (substitute SF jello): https://unjury.com/recipes/jell-o-high-protein-high-calorie/ -
Day1 - 2week Post-Op Diet
lvidacovich replied to Fatboyslim1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That seems very similar to what I had and was allowed in my first two weeks post-op which was what we called the liquid phase. I had no issues at all other than when I tried to make tomato soup with full fat milk. I'd skip the cream of wheat or rice - that WAS on our plan but was removed under the new nutritionist. My carbs were well under 20g a day during the liquid phase. I generally had 2 protein shakes/supplements a day and then some sort of meal for the last - soup, yogurt, pudding or jello, etc. I still think there will be hunger as all of this is liquid or slides out of the stomach quickly and easily. I can't believe you're getting a sleeve at 265! I mean to each their own and I wish you luck but I would likely be happy just to get to 265 from my starting weight (we're the same height). And I am assuming you're male. -
Howdy all - I am going under the knife on Dec-3, and just received my diet protocol. Teaching hospital in the US, and they have just changed the initial diet criteria to the following: 3 - meals per day (2oz) choice of: Greek Yogurt, SF Pudding, Strained of cream soup, Cream of Wheat or rice, Cottage Cheese. 3 - Protein supplement per day min: >20g protien, <190calories, < 5g sugar. 48-64oz H2o daily, 30 minutes before meals. I have been viewing here for a short time, and this diet actually seems realistic, because it seems that a lot of new post-op patients have talked about feeling hungry because there is no mass in their original post-op diets. Seem logical that this diet will have a sense of volume or mass that may hold in my baby stomach, and perhaps alleviate that initial "hungry" feeling ? thoughts?

protein powder in sugar free jello?
FluffyChix replied to loridee11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes. It's also good mixed with plain greek yogurt and liquid vanilla stevia. Stirred together then chill until set. Kinda like that sour cream jello creation our mom's made back in the 60-70s. I just made this. I wouldn't recommend it until totally healed from surgery and having zero food issues or swallowing issues cuz it's really dense! -

Food Before and After Photos

Ok, just in case you are saying to yourself: "Self? I feel like I need more chemicals in my life." I give you strawberry banana protein fluff. I actually had it mixed with peanut butter Greek yogurt and it was obscenely satisfying. I don't even care that my tongue is kinda numb. hehe. Or that I'm glowing--just a little. This was the yogurt concoction. I had already eaten half of it. Sorry for the gooberish pick. SUPER filling! Super filling! You can use any flavor of jello or protein powder. This was 100% whey isolate although all the recipes call for casein. But it still worked. I'm freezing the clouds to see what that texture will be like. I'm thinking I will use some cheesecake sf jello pudding mix to try it. The real recipe calls for strawberries frozen which sounds yum, but it's also 22g of carbs! Yikes! So I did this instead. Full Recipe of Strawberry Banana Protein Fluff (5 servings-about 1 1/4 cups = 230g of fluff) Single Servings of the Fluff (about 45g) Single Serving of PB Greek Yogurt Mixed with a Serving of Strawberry Banana Fluff (dunno how much it weighed) -
I know, right? 😆 But honestly, I got a huge amount of detail to prep me for surgery with every step of the post-OP diet spelled out clearly. I'm not thrilled for a week I'll be eating Greek yogurt and string cheese, but the week after I could have fish (of course I'm allergic and I won't, but I could!). A month will pass before I know it.

Can't handle protein shakes
MarvelGirl25 replied to bigdaddyff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the same problem. I would try the unflavored protein or yogurt Good luck! -
Yogurt, cottage cheese, chicken, fish, shrimp, avocado, deli meat, cheese, eggs, and soups. Beef was on the list however, unless its cooked for a long time like in a stew, I cannot get it chewed to the consistency that is required. So I stay away from beef. Chicken and tuna are my go to. Just remember chew, chew, chew.

I'm feeling pretty good. I did set a water reminder on the baritastic app, but I'm pretty good a sipping throughout the day. I have a long way to go on liquids and was not tolerating protein shakes very well, so I've switched to Carnation no added sugar added to 1 cup skim milk and I add a scoop of Genepro to it to make it a protein bomb. It isn't as sweet or thick as my protein shakes. I have also added Genepro to thinned soups and yogurt, so it helps me to meet my protein goal of 70 grams. I have a few teaspoons of this a few times a day. It's nice to feel like I'm eating real food.

I liked yogurt, mashed potatoes, mashed avocados, mashed banana, jello, whitefish salad, tuna salad, etc.

Oh, hummus sounds amazing. My doctor gave me a list of food I'm allowed to eat for each stage post- surgery for the first year. Hummus isn't on the list. The handful of foods that are on the list for my first week of food are mostly yogurt and cottage cheese. Some plain beans the week after. No meat for over a month. 😭 I'm with you, I miss chicken so bad...

I remember eating a lot of Greek yogurt and hummus. And refried beans.

When I got home after surgery, the first two nights, I dreampt of M&M's. I dont even like them that much, but they called to me. I cried the first two days, in the hospital. And then again the last few nights as I seem only able to get a couple hours of sleep at a time, when I wake up and wander the house trying to tire myself out. Last night my oh so skinny husband brought home pizza... my absolute favorite. I had to sit and smell it and my sense of smell is way better now than it was pre-OP. As I watched him devour an entire pizza there was some rage that built... Anyway, the point is, the liquid diet sucks. My doctor has me on only liquid for two weeks, then I can add yogurt and reduced fat peanut butter and a couple other things for another two weeks. I am so depressed when I think about food. But just before Christmas I get meats of all sorts. That's keeping me going. So maybe think about when you get to add more to the diet? Think about what you'll need then? That's the only thing that seems to help me when it gets really bad.

Started my 2 week “liquid” diet Wednesday. I am allowed 1 Egg per day, 4 Protein Shakes, 1 Serving of NF plain Yogurt, and unlimited broth, sf jello etc. I am not gonna gonna lie the first 3 days were horrible! I even had a small pretzel stick on the second day. Today I was quite shocked though to wake up and not be able to finish my broth. I have been having protein shakes and jello but I am nowhere near as hungry as I was and have tons more energy. Do you think I am over the hump? Is this normal? Also lost about 15lbs in same timeframe 😮

Dec 31st surgery date
catwoman7 replied to loridee11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
at Thanksgiving focus on the turkey and vegetables. Maybe just a 1/4 C of the stuffing and sweet potato casserole. Skip the bread. My first Thanksgiving post-surgery, I brought pumpkin yogurt for my dessert (while everyone else ate pumpkin pie). It was fine. A lot of brands make pumpkin yogurt this time of year. Stay active... -
Can't handle protein shakes
Dances with Carbs replied to bigdaddyff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try diluting oikos triple zero yogurt with milk and add a scoop of protein powder. Mix it and eat with a spoon like yogurt. -
I'm 3 days post op after having a sleeve done. I have horrible heartburn and burping. My doctor gave me Protonix and told me to take Gas-x chewables. It made a huge difference. It's worse when I eat or drink fluids. I'm told this will pass and I can't wait. Greek Yogurt seems to cause less discomfort than the protein shakes. The good news is that I'm down 27 lbs! 13 lbs were pre op and I'm getting a little more than 38 ozs in. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Overwhelming wins and losses
Darktowerdream replied to Darktowerdream's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Me again otherwise my lack of memory will eat it. ive never been a snacker. I do still stick to very low carb. I do some intermittent fasting. And sometimes it’s good to fast a day once in a while. though those were unintentional due to fasting for blood tests or procedures. It helps. yes I treat every so often. A little sf whip on my coffee. And I have gone out to eat. One time I had a bit of sweet potato mashed. The second time I managed a couple Shrimp it risks my allergies but is a low calorie protein easy to eat if not too chewy. Lots of protein in least calories. I had a 4 oz veggie burger for dinner w. A little Bit of mustard a drop of mayo. I ate as slow as I could and it was good (soft easy to chew not too hard to swallow) but foods still make me sick. But Doesn’t start until I’m done. I am learning to see food as nutrition vs comfort more now. And that I don’t need as much to sustain myself. hard lesson. Still learning. Not to push. And if a food causes too much backsliding either I limit it or eliminate it. now the holidays will be tough but try not to think of sweets as a treat but nice bit of roasted turkey maybe and a veggie egg casserole or “pie” and look for low carb pumpkin pie recipes that you can make with protein. And eat a tiny bit. Or try seasonal flavor protein bars like oh yeah one or no cow. BariatricPal mug cakes too. Or just seasonal sf flavor syrup like skinny girl syrups in tea or yogurt or protein shakes. I find them at stores like marshals, Burlington, sometimes tjmaxx or home goods, sometimes Wednesday morning (whatever day that store is) I like our local Burlington or Marshall’s. They are cheap. I’ve meant to write about this. My nutritionist wanted me to share in a support group but I haven’t been able to get there. Makes me nervous being judged by others. So I’m trying my best here for a while. When I can. Though my energy is limited, I end up writing more if I’m crashed. Sometimes this is as active as I’m physically able to be. But losing the weight still gives me physical freedom of not carrying the burden. Despite the cost I pay otherwise. in hospital I was like omg what did I do but I knew it was the right thing to do despite how I felt physically it was either fight or give up and know despite all my efforts otherwise I’d have kept gaining on minimal carbs and calories. And adjusting to new habits and way of eating. I hope to reach goal and finally maintain steady.
