  1. So in the last several weeks I've really increased the intensity of my workouts. I've moved from plain walks to interval training, and I'm doing strength training with pretty heavy weights (8 rep range) 2-3 times a week. So far it's been going well and I feel well-- I like to motivate myself by pretending to be, like, the Black Widow or Emma Peel and tell myself that I need those squats to kick bad guys in the face. These workouts are quite intense for me - HR above 140 in the cardio, working muscles to near-fatigue in the strength training. However, a few times I have noticed that after a workout I get low blood sugar symptoms - like I've burned through all my fuel. I get very shaky and muddle-headed. After the first time it happened I now try to work out within an hour or so of having a protein-rich snack and then I bring a Quest bar or something with me to eat afterward. What has your experience been with pre-and post-workout eating? Do you time your workouts around mealtimes, and if so, how? what mix of Proteins and carbs works best to fuel a workout and not get a sugar low afterward? I am five months out from the sleeve surgery if it makes a difference in your answer. On the NSV side today, I had a therapy appointment and my therapist remarked that he noticed a difference in me since the last appointment - that I seemed more energetic and spry. Gotta love it!

Thinking of you, Julie. We have a joke in our house, Ice is our friend." Have no idea what plastics protocol involves but boy do I love ice packs for joint pain. You should see our freezer, lol. Did a little retail therapy today, at the local job lots. Coldwater Creek and JJill for ten bucks per. I now have three pair of pants as next NSVs -- two nice linen pants in a purple and a red. Fancy! And another pair of red dress pants. All size ten a and all too. I can zip 'em but that's it. Need to lose some more gut. But then my my, the pants I will have. So much fun to buy off the rack. It's been twenty years for me to be able to enjoy shopping again. Said goodbye to a loved one today -- I am so glad he got to see me lose weight, choose myself and get healthy. He was a doctor. My godfather. Never said a word but I watched his delight this last year as I slimmed down. He had some dementia but was always so delighted to see me. I will miss him but 90 years is a long time. Dying is hard. Glad to have extended my life by choosing to work on my physical body.

Lisa, Lisa, love your post and that you are taking care of yourself. And the race to the theater seats -- being able to do it and laugh about it -- big NSV! Such a New Yorky one from my point of view here in the sticks, lol. I've been dealing with addiction of a loved one as well. My best friend -- had no idea (depression and alcohol but I think the prescribed medication is playing a huge role). I am doing what I can (her husband has ALS...Who wouldn't want escape through whatever means but it DOESNT WORK). Anyway, two beautiful children and I am in a position where I have to draw the line and take care of myself and my own family -- feels like a lot of prioritizing going on 24 x 7 and I imagine that's what your life is. Choose Lisa first. Choose Lisa first. Come on, Let me hear it -- choose Lisa first. Every one else will benefit. Sing it, chant it behind the steering wheel, say it in the shower......at least that's worked for me.

    Typical weight loss

@@Tanya Gif - It varies greatly. Some people lose nothing initially. Others lose massive amounts. Do not compare yourself to others. Follow your program. Focus on getting in your protein, drinking fluids/water and walking and/or exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Better yet, step away from the scale. Instead take your measurements. Then retake them once a month. There will be times the scale doesn't move. NSV (non -scale victories) will be your saving grace

    NSV!

So, showering had been increasingly difficult in the months before surgery. I would have to sit down for most of it, and I felt sweaty and out of breath at the end. I am 12 days post surgery and was able to shower comfortably and not be either sweaty or out of breath this morning!!! First day back at work, I am anticipating other NSVs like that in the course of my work day as well!
  6. You are doing everything you are supposed to AND you are losing weight. I don't see the problem? As for being in a different part of the journey, you are right, I am 15 months out, but I have been where you are and I'm just saying you are making yourselves miserable for no reason. You've actually lost more than I had at 4 weeks out but I celebrated every pound I lost as a success. You see your loss as a failure. The only difference is perspective. My biggest advice has always been "stay off the scale, get in all your Protein, Water and Vitamins and don't overeat. Enjoy the NSV's". This can be the best time of your life or you can stress and be miserable. The choice is yours.
  7. I just wanted to let you guys know that I got on the plane and fit just fine (had a little room on each side even.) As happy as I was with that I had another NSV that I wasn't expecting. When they came around with drinks I ordered my Water with no ice and then reached out to put my tray table down. And low and behold it came down and laid flat!! I was amazed. I usually always had to use my daughters or husband's tray on previous trips. I can tell you it felt great!!

    How about some NSVs!?!?

My first NSV, well I'm sure there have been more, this is the first one I've shared. I can easily! reach the plug in the tub to let the bathwater out, scrub the bottoms of my feet like it wasn't a chore! Before it cut me in half to try and reach the plug let alone the soles of my feet!

    Joy to the World!

@@CanyonBaby love those clothes NSV's continued years of "joy" to the world who deserves it more?? keep up the good job 48 lbs down!!!! woo hoo party dance party dance kathy congrats
  11. After a few weeks of little scale joy, in fact a downer last Monday (I gained a pound) - which is the day of the week I weigh - I went shopping and bought a top that was actually a size large...AND IT FITS!!! And it is loose and flowy...LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!!! NSV TO THE WORLD!!! So why the joy? I haven't fit in this size since my teens, some 35 YEARS ago! That is DECADES! Joy, indeed ahhh...
  12. HAHA......okay not really but maybe that I am being silly??? We are leaving on this Friday for vacation. We are flying out and this will be the first time on a plane since my WLS. Now in the past when we fly I would always ask for a seatbelt extender as I was getting on. That way I was all prepared and ready to go. If it was just me and my daughter flying I would always put her in the middle so I wasn't oozing (for lack of a better word) onto someone I didn't know. Well it is me, my husband, my daughter and my mom going this time. My daughter and my mom will sit together and me and my husband will sit together. I have asked my husband to let me sit down and see how I fit and feel in the seat and if I am comfortable I will sit in the middle, if not he will let me sit on the aisle. Isn't he sweet?? (because of my husbands job when we fly, we preboard and he should sit in aisle seat.) Now both my husband and my daughter say I will be just fine and I shouldn't be worrying about fitting, but I just can't seem to not. This is the only part of the vacation that bothers me. I am so excited otherwise, we are headed to Diseyland and being 80lbs lighter I cannot wait to go and enjoy myself and not have to watch everyone else having fun. So I know once I board the plane sit my butt down I will be fine, it's just doing it. Everytime I fit some where that was tight before I get so excited and amazed. So this will just be one more of my NSV's I am hoping!! Thanks for letting me get this out!!
  13. I started my journey at 268 lbs and today I am 170 lbs. my survey was 9/11/14. It has been awesome. My energy level. My ability to just move. Yesterday I went to Old navy and tried on a size 12 pair of jeans and they were to big. I am happy to say. I walked out with the size 10. I have never been able to fit a size 10. My next NSV will be running the Susan Koman 5k here in Philadelphia this Mother's Day. I thank God everyday for giving me the courage to decide to have this surgery.

Nothing small about that NSV! Congratulations !!!!

    1st NSV!

Thanks ladies! Yes every little NSV helps when the scale won't budge that's for sure! I know everyone says its just a number but I can't help but feel so defeated for a bit after weighing in and it not saying what I think it should.

Awesome NSV!! Love to hear it!!

    1st NSV!

That is great, ladies! And I totally get it. These NSV's are so important as you go along, and it was really nice for me to see this today since my scale is *not* budging at all. I posted this somewhere else a while back, but being able to shave the back of my thighs with ease was pretty cool Keep up the good work!
  18. Even though I am short, pre-surgery I've always worn a women's xl shirt and dresses. I am going on vacation and ordered some cute dresses and skirts from Athleta in XS and I had to send 2 dresses and a skirt back because they were too big. I guess that would be a NSV I am now washing so many of my clothes in hot Water just to get them smaller. Even jeans that I bought a month ago size 26. Enjoy the rest of your weekend- ~LA
  19. I had my surgery end of December and was riding normally in April. Including saddling, loading, etc. I felt perfectly OK to ride a month earlier, but most of our trails were still under several feet of snow and I find arena riding too boring. In fact, I scheduled my surgery specifically so it wouldn't interfere with riding. My work partner did the same thing with her hysterectomy....she had hers as soon as my weight lifting restrictions were over so at least ONE of us could do our jobs! Her doctor's official orders were 6-8 weeks out of the saddle and hers was a much harder recovery than my VSG. Oh yeah, and start looking for saddles...one of my favorite NSVs was going from an 18" seat to a 15" seat! Love my new saddle and love being able to hop up there without having to find a log or rock to stand on.

    1st NSV!

Isn't that an awesome feeling!! Congratulations My first NSV is being able to trim my toenails without having discomfort and feeling like a contortionist!! I can actually get to them easily now!

    1st NSV!

Aside from getting into smaller sizes, I had my 1st NSV last night. We went out to dinner for the 1st time since surgery and went to a restaurant that we would normally wait for a table as the booths are so small and it'd be a very tight fit. Well I didn't even think about it until I went to sit and there was plenty of room to spare! I was so shocked I didn't have to try to wiggle my way in and pretend I was fine. It's definitely the small things! ????

You know you lost weight when

While out on my walk during break time i caught sight of my reflection next to my friend (who is probably about 120ish) and i didn't want to crawl in a hole and die. In fact i felt quite proud. Also... i now weigh LESS than my husband!!! First time in my life I weigh less than the guy I'm with. Still very very far to go, and am a chronic slow loser, but I'm enjoying every little NSV!!
  23. So this morning I'm getting dressed and pull on my sports bra and undies. Something didn't quite look right in the mirror and I realized I had put my bra on backwards....and it fit fine! Thats how pitifully tiny my boobies are now. I literally laughed out loud and flipped it around the right way. But I don't think that's what they meant by "reversible".

@@2babutterfly - I had enough of the emotional, and literal, roller coaster ride with the scale. My husband put it somewhere out of my sight & reach. I now weigh only monthly at the doc. For me it works, allows me to celebrate little NSVs. You do what works for you, just don't let it get you down. Let's celebrate eating clean and hitting the gym! YEAH YOU!!!!
  25. NSV today!!! They used a "normal" adult blood pressure cuff today at the doctor's office! First time since I was 20!

I know! To most it probably seems like nothing but to me, I was so happy! I even asked the nurse, "Is that a regular BP cuff?" She looked at me like I had two heads or something. It made my day though! Ahhhhh, the little things indeed. :)
