    Dipping my toe in!

Hello Shelley, I am in the UK too, there are a few of us on here. Congrats on getting your date so quickly. It took me 8 months from my first consult which was about 5 months too long. It is normal to be nervous but you will find that its unnecessary. The only thing that I was unprepared for was the tiny portions that I can eat. The time I waited for surgery left me time to read lots of the posts on this forum, I went back 10 years. It has really helped me. I had a 3 week preop diet that I found tough but I knew from here that if I managed 4 days then it would get easier, it did but I could not wait for the surgery to come and end it. Good luck and post away
  2. Sounds like you are happy where you are (and not interested in doing anything more to change it)....soooooo congratulations on getting to goal! P.S. I tried to stop losing on purpose at 7 months (upped my calories considerably), and stopped losing consistently around 9-10 months (lowest weight 109 lbs). I'm 3+ years post op, 5'2" 118 lbs this morning. I eat around 1800-2000 cals/day these days.
  3. Would you be willing to share your stats Esi? What was your starting weight and how much have you lost? I have no idea whether there's any definite line between the weight loss phase and maintenance phase OTHER than one ends and the other starts when you stop losing weight. Sounds like you see it looking backwards after a couple of months and sounds like you might be there. I am sure that if you change things about a bit you COULD lose more weight, but as you say, if this is your new set weight then you'd just have picked a battle you could never win - one most of us have been fighting all our lives. On the other hand this could be a final very gradual loss where you really do only lose like a pound a month or less, and again you may only recognise that looking backwards in another six months! Anyway, you have done brilliantly to get within 10-15lbs of a BMI of 25. Lots of folks would be super pleased with that. I think you sound as if you have a totally sensible approach to it.
  4. Still in the pre-op phase here. Just wondering what everyone else is doing for diet? I had lost 10% of my weight at the 6 month preop time. Now I’ve gained back 5-7 pounds and can’t get past it. Up and down and back and forth. Wondering what you all are following as far as calories, macros, etc that seems to be working. Not sure if my body just freaked out at the 10% mark but I’m really struggling and I’d like to lose as much as possible before surgery if I can. I’m exercising doing CrossFit or walking/yoga 5-6 days a week. Any advice?
  5. At what point did you stop losing? I’m almost at a year, and have gone up/down the same 2 pounds for 2 months. I am happy at this weight (would love to lose another 10-15 pounds to be at a “normal” BMI), but am wondering if this is typically the end of weight loss. I’m feeling pretty good about continuing the daily maintenance it would take to stay this way long term. I’m not willing to do much else to lose weight because mentally, I feel I’d start obsessing, which would backfire eventually. I want to be at peace and not gain. 😊

    Progress pictures

Thank you! Yeah, I don't know if I had screwed up my metabolism or what...but I was workin my tail off and getting nowhere! Then I would give up, eat whatever I wanted for a week, gain another 10 pounds, and start the cycle all over again. Good luck with your surgery! You will be amazed at how quick it comes off! Progress pictures

Amazing progress! Good job! So funny you said that about the CrossFit workouts! I’m now 7 1/2 months in pre-op. Stepped it up to CrossFit 4-5 days a week from 3 and since I hit the 10% loss I’ve gone nowhere and even gained about 5 pounds back! I can’t figure it out. Eat more, eat less, who knows! Gives me hope that surgery really will help!

    Successful post op gastric bypass

The moment I came out of the anesthesia, I was insanely groggy and my abdomen was SORE. Best way I can describe is that it felt like I had someone trying to blow up a balloon underneath my stitches. That pain went down 50% over the next 24 hours, but it was probably about 10 days before that pain completely went away. There will be days when it is just plain sore, especially as your abs heal from the incision (the main incision on the left side, where they cut the abdominal muscle to get in, took the longest to heal and longest to no longer have pain). I tolerated liquids well from the start; I was sipping Crystal Light lemonade in the hospital and handled the jello just fine. As far as being super active...well, define "super active." This was my first surgery ever and what I didn't realize was how much surgery saps your energy. I would slowly walk around the hospital floor once or twice a day, mostly just to have a change of scenery. I walked like an old man in a nursing home, but all the nurses commented on how much more I walked than most people who have bariatric surgery. It was a week before I had something approaching a normal schedule, but it was a few weeks before I had normal energy levels. If you are in your 20s, are going to be diligent about your vitamins/nutrition/protein and have no major complicating factors (autoimmune diseases, etc.), then chronic illness is not super likely.

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

First issue! I am about 10 days post op and I drank my protein shake too fast today. I am absolutely miserable!! Stomach ache and cramps are sooo bad. I called my doctors office and they told me I am ok and that it’s my new stomach not liking how fast I consumed the protein shake. This is awful! LESSON LEARNED!! Lol

    Initial weight vs current weight

Starting weight: 339 Current weight: 165 Surgery date: 11/10/20 I’m a 5’10 female, age 40. Yeah, I was told I’d end up still in the 200s. Forget that noise, if you use the surgery as a tool and do your own work you can end up at your goal weight.

    Weight Loss Journey

I am going to try and upload pictures weekly if not monthly to see the progress. I had a RYGB Limb Lenghtening- January 19 2022
  12. They inflate you with air during surgery, and the 'gas pain' should probably be divided into two: - The immediate pain (immediately after until 12h) - The lingering pain (12h to 7 days) I was probably not well-deflated and under-medicated coming out of surgery; I was in a ton of pain, but once I got up and moved around (and trust me, that was hard on a 9.8 on a 10 pain scale), it helped a lot. It was two-three rough hours. The lingering gas was annoying, but not really painful, for me. I'm not saying this to deter you, I'm saying if you're one of the people who experience pain immediately after, ask for more pain meds right away and get up as soon as you can. It helps! Reported for surgery at noon on Thursday, surgery at 1.30pm, out by 8am Friday morning.

    Some questions

My insurance wont cover anything either so i am self pay. I am going for the sleeve. Just waiting on preop crap. as long as you stick to it and do your part, You will be successful with a sleeve. What made me go with the sleeve was all the videos i watched on youtube on all the different weight loss surgeries. as someone already mentioned, Mexico is a option if you want it done cheap... If i was gonna go that route i would want to get it done at Endobariatrics. They only do sleeves. But there are others. last i saw they were around the 10 grand mark. My Sleeve i am paying for here in Florida is costing around $18-19K
  14. I had revision surgery 10 days ago to resolve my problems with GERD. My surgeon said that, without converting from the sleeve to by-pass, my hiatal hernia would return within 6 months. Despite the adjustments required for the by-pass, it’s been wonderful waking up each day without feeling that I have a bonfire burning inside me!

    Pre op foods

Actually it was fine. Post op, first 10 days was the same except it was two optifast shakes and I began to gag on them so ended it early and began the next stage of home made creamed soups. I can't look at those shakes now, it's like a phobia.

    Gas Pain post op

Well I hate to be a downer on this but, for some, you may want to just get used to it. My surgery was done almost 10 years ago and I still have gas. Good luck and I hope overcome it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

That’s so exciting! I had my surgery 1/10. 4weeks out and I feel great. I’m happy to see you have a goal I had a goal but my surgeon reminded me that even if the scale doesn’t show it we lose inches. I’ve noticed my stomach is getting smaller, I’m about 20lbs down from surgery and starting this journey when I got interested in surgery I’m down 60lbs! I hope you make your goal!!

Dont focus on the stalls. Being almost 7 weeks out I can tell you ill go 3-10 days no weight loss then bam 3-4 days of loss then stall again. My Dr and Nutritionist bot have me weigh and measure once a week. It helps to not weigh daily - advice I also got from many seasoned people here. Focus on eating what you should, drinking fluids, and exercise. It does come off. Mine is slow but ive lost 33 pounds so far and im a month to the day put monger than you.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I am not sure of monthly totals, but as of Friday I am down 58 lbs. My surgery was November 9th so feeling pretty good about this amount of loss in less than 3 months. I have had a couple of short stalls but mostly I am consistently losing 1/2 pound a day. I stick to mostly protein and then vegies as tolerated before I am full. I exercise 4x a week for about 30 mins, but also go up and down the stairs in my house about 10 times a day. 😁

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

2/3 sleeve here. Experiencing a lot of the same. Discomfort more than pain. Trying to walk for 10 minutes at least 6 times a day. Just around the house since it's snowy and icy out. Using the tread on a super low walk speed. Can't sleep in the bed yet. Abdominal binder is a god-send. Fortunately no nausea. Constantly sipping water and shakes. Have had 2 popsicks and 2 half cups of jello. Miralx started yesterday, too. Sent from my SM-G970U using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I had a hard time until i was out of the liquid stage. It was so hard for me because i was in liquid a month before surgery so i missed thanksgiving and had my surgery 12/22/21 I had to stay too because i was also throwing up. I got out Christmas Eve but they didnt want to release me even then until i told the Dr my 2 teenagers where home alone and I didnt want to have them alone on Christmas. But now, 6 + weeks out I am actually really in great spirits and have been since about day 10. I think everyone here are correct that its normal.
  24. I had my surgery 2/3 and was released from hospital 2/4. My incisions don't really hurt, just sore. When I had my lap band removed in 10/2021, they must have really yanked on the liver to retract it during surgery because that hurt REALLY BADLY for 3 weeks. Compared to that, this is a non-carb cake walk. I am electing to stay on clear liquids until tomorrow or Monday as I'm not hungry and I don't want to screw the pouch up with too much too soon. I feel really good and Praise Jesus, no complications from the surgery. Now it's time to begin my new relationship with food. No longer will it be my confidant and comforter, but simply my nutrition to keep my body healthy and free of junk. Drinking Smooth Moves hot tea to get my bowels moving after surgery. I've always struggled with constipation and I'm hopeful this will keep me regular.

    Pre-Op Tests

My surgeon didn't require a sleep study, though I told him I suffer from sleep apnea and I can't tolerate the CPAP machine. I think my sleep apnea is better after my surgery. Getting another sleep study is on my to-do list. I understand the CPAP machines are better than they were 10 years ago, so maybe I could tolerate one now if I still need it.
